According to reports Christopher Jackson Smith, DOB: 11/04/1982, allegedly battered, strangled and threatened to murder his ex-girlfriend Lakeysah Herrera.

According to reports Smith and Herrara had been in a long term relationship (5 Years) which ended in January of 2016. This entire event was witnessed by a young child that the couple have together. When Herrera came to the suspect choked her again and when she yelled for help, and yelled for the child to run, Smith allegedly grabbed super glue and tried to glue Herrera’s mouth shut. During this initial battery Smith allegedly knocked out one of Herrera’s front teeth.

According to an arrest affidavit furnished by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office the incident didn’t end with this initial battery. Smith allegedly grabbed Herrera by the hair and using a kitchen knife, poked in her back, forced Herrera into his truck. Smith allegedly threatened to run her through, with the knife, if she tried to yell or run. Smith would place the couples young child also in the truck, without a car seat, and allegedly made Herrera sit in the middle of the front seat so he could maintain control over her.

Smith allegedly continued to punch and elbow Herrera. He would allegedly explain to Herrera that he was taking her to an orange grove to kill her. He also allegedly advised he was going to do it in front of the couples young child. During this time Herrera was able to send a FB post “Help”. She was also somehow able to pick up a small pocket knife in the pickup. Herrera took the knife and stabbed Smith in the neck. This caused an injury to Smith, but it was determined later to not be life threatening. Around this time the truck and occupants were on Old Forty Rd. A resident of the area saw the truck and went to investigate. He asked if everything was okay and Smith replied they were lost. At this time Herrera yelled for help. Smith then drove off with both Herrara and the child still in the truck. Polk County Sheriff’s Office Press Release

During the evening hours of Tuesday, October 18, 2016, leading into Wednesday morning, October 19th, a crime spree occurred in the Shepherd Oaks subdivision, Imperial Lakes subdivision, and Casa Loma subdivision, all in the south Lakeland/Mulberry area.

PCSO deputies arrested four suspects, three males and a female, ranging in age from 16 years old to 19 years old and charged them with several crimes after interrupting their crime spree, during which they stole five vehicles and two firearms, and burglarized several unlocked cars.

“The most important message about this crime spree is this: if you LOCK YOUR CARS and secure your belongings, you are almost guaranteeing that you will not be a victim of theft. Every vehicle stolen during this crime spree was unlocked, with the keys inside of it – the only exception are the two cars whose keys were taken from inside a home where the garage door was up. When you get home, the first thing you need to do is lock your car – and the second thing you need to do is shut your garage door and lock all your other doors. We’re glad we caught these suspects before they victimized anyone else.” – Grady Judd, Sheriff

The first car theft was reported on Peninsular Drive in Christina on Wednesday morning, October 19th. The victims left their garage door up, and while they were home but unknown to them, suspects went into the house and removed car keys, a wallet, and a camera from a counter inside the home near where the garage leads into the house. The suspects stole the victims’ 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche (1) and 2004 Buick LeSabre (2).

During a neighborhood canvass, deputies discovered two burglaries of unlocked cars on Hayter Drive and two attempted car burglaries of locked cars on Sunset Ridge.

Shortly thereafter, a Chrysler 200 (3) was reported stolen from Shepherd Oaks Road, along with a trailer theft and another car burglary.

Two more stolen vehicles, a 2013 Chevrolet Cruze (4) and a 2011 Dodge Caliber (5), were reported in Imperial Lakes.

A car burglary was reported on Loma Verde, during which a .38 special Ruger revolver was stolen from an unlocked car. Another burglary was reported on Casa Loma Way, during which a Bond 410 “Snake Slayer” handgun was stolen from an unlocked car.

Deputies utilized surveillance video from homeowners and nearby businesses, along with OnStar-style vehicle tracking software during the investigation. During the investigation, deputies went to the area of Market Square off of Pipkin Road, where they located four of the stolen vehicles – the Chevy Avalanche, the Buick LeSabre, the Chrysler 200, and the Dodge Caliber, but not the stolen trailer or the Chevy Cruze – parked alongside the road.

Two of the suspects, Donte Scott and Jacob Cleveland, were found nearby inside the stolen Chevy Cruze. Cleveland had active Polk County warrants for grand theft auto, fraud, theft, and criminal mischief. The suspects were interviewed, and two other suspects were identified: Jarred Clark and Angel Wheaton. Deputies responded to Hayes Road in Lakeland, and although they both hid inside the house (Clark hid in the attic but surrendered after gas was introduced), deputies were able to take them both into custody without incident.

The suspects and their charges are:

19-year-old Donte Scott, DOB 9/12/1997, of Zella Lane in Lakeland; 17 counts Armed Burglary; 5 counts Grand Theft of Motor Vehicle; 2 counts Grand Theft of Firearm; 4 counts Grand Theft; 3 counts Petit Theft; one count Conspiracy to Commit Burglary; one count Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor; he’s been in the Polk County Jail on five prior occasions.

17-year-old Jacob Cleveland, DOB 3/3/1999, of Melissa Lane in Lakeland; 17 counts Armed Burglary; 5 counts Grand Theft of Motor Vehicle; 2 counts Grand Theft of Firearm; 4 counts Grand Theft; 3 counts Petit Theft; one count Conspiracy to Commit Burglary;

17-year-old Jarred Clark, DOB 10/21/1999, of Hayes Rd in Lakeland; 17 counts Armed Burglary; 5 counts Grand Theft of Motor Vehicle; 2 counts Grand Theft of Firearm; 4 counts Grand Theft; 3 counts Petit Theft; one count Conspiracy to Commit Burglary;

17-year-old Angel Wheaton (female), DOB 6/24/1999, of Hayes Rd in Lakeland; 17 counts Armed Burglary; 5 counts Grand Theft of Motor Vehicle; 2 counts Grand Theft of Firearm; 4 counts Grand Theft; 3 counts Petit Theft; one count Conspiracy to Commit Burglary;

Each of the stolen vehicles, with the exception of the two on Peninsular Drive (their keys were taken from inside an unsecured residence) were unlocked; each of the vehicles that were broken into and had items stolen from within, were unlocked; the suspects attempted to break into other vehicles that were locked, but were unable. Ten cases were cleared by these four arrests. The investigation is ongoing.

Bartow, Florida – On 10/20/2016 members of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office responded to 4775 80 Foot Road, Bartow in reference to a 911 hang-up. Upon arrival, deputies began walking up to the residence to make contact with the homeowners and observed several subjects congregating in a bedroom on the South side of the residence through a window with the blinds pulled open. Deputies observed several subjects had blood on them and attempted to make contact with the homeowner at the front door. While approaching the front door, deputies made contact with Judy McKay, homeowner, who advised everything was okay. While at the front door, deputies Howard observed what appeared to be blood on the steps leading to the front door and apparent blood smeared on the outside of the residence. Deputies explained they were at the residence and requested permission to enter the residence to ensure the safety of everyone inside. Judy denied consent for the deputy to enter the residence. Based on the fact there were obvious injuries to subjects inside the residence, and there appeared to be a large amount of blood at several locations throughout the residence, the deputy entered the residence based on exigent circumstances.

Immediately upon entering the residence, the deputy advised he could smell the odor of raw cannabis permeating throughout the residence. The deputy made contact with a white male identified as Mark McKay, also homeowner, who was covered in blood. Mark sustained a stab wound to his neck and forehead as a result of the altercation. The deputy observed blood on the floor throughout the residence, blood on the walls, blood in the kitchen sink, and blood in the bathroom sink. Once ensuring the well-being of Mark, the deputy conducted a protective sweep of the residence to ensure there were no other victims inside the residence.

Upon entering a bedroom located on the North side of the residence, deputies allegedly observed several cannabis stalks hanging upside down from a make shift drying line. The cannabis stalks appeared to have come directly from a cannabis plant. The weight of the cannabis allegedly was well over 20 grams which is indicative of the sale of cannabis. Also observed in plain view in the bedroom was a light commonly used for cultivation of cannabis. Additionally, a ballast was observed on the floor in plain view of the bedroom. Also allegedly located within the bedroom was a digital scale, which based on my training and experience I know is indicative of the sale of illegal narcotics. Finally, a piece of paper with names and numbers was located on a dresser in plain view. This paper appeared to be a drug ledger which is common with drug sales.

The residence had a detached shed located in the back yard. The shed was illuminating a large amount of light although it was after 2:00pm. This combined with the fact there was a light, a ballast, and several stalks of a cannabis plant hanging to dry inside the residence was indicative of further cultivation.

Post Miranda, Judy allegedly advised the cannabis inside the residence was being kept because she makes oil with it and gives it to Mark McKay. Judy allegedly advised Mark was injured several months ago and cannabis helps with his pain; therefore, she keeps it around the house and gives it to him when he is in pain. Based on the results of the investigation up to this point, a search warrant was authorized on the residence.

Once the search warrant was signed, it was executed on the residence at 4:29am. After reading the search warrant, a search of the residence was conducted. In the bedroom on the north side of the residence, deputies removed the cannabis which was originally observed drying. Next, they allegedly opened the dresser drawers inside the bedroom and observed two large, glass jars containing a large amount of cannabis. This amount was well over 20 grams. Also located in the room were several lights, ballast, and a light hood.

Next, a search of the shed located in the back yard was conducted. The shed was divided into three different parts, and upon entering the shed, it allegedly became obvious it was being used to cultivate cannabis. Upon entering the first room, room one, deputies allegedly observed 101 cannabis plants in pots being cultivated. Upon entering room two, deputies allegedly observed 168 smaller cannabis plants in pots being cultivated. Upon entering room three, allegedly 225 larger cannabis plants were being cultivated in individual pots. Also located within the shed were 29 light bulbs, eight hoods, and 6 ballasts which are all required for the cultivation of cannabis. The total number of cannabis plants was 494 plants.

Mark McKay & Judy McKay were both arrested and transported to Polk County Jail.
