JC Reviews: Wicked is a Wickedly Good Musical of a Movie

#image_title

by James Coulter

Nearly 20 years ago, someone asked the bold question, “What if the Wizard of Oz was told from the Wicked Witch’s side of the story?” That answer was Wicked, one of the most successful Broadway musicals in the 21st Century.

The influence of this musical has proven immensely immeasurable. To date, it is the longest-running show on Broadway. It served as a springboard for Idina Menzel’s career, leading her to other big roles in other big musicals like Frozen. And, undoubtedly, it served as inspiration for retelling other stories from the villain’s perspective.

Now, nearly 20 years later, the musical has been brought from the big stages of Broadway to the big screens of movie theaters. But does this film adaptation do the musical justice? With this first part of a two-part film series defy gravity? Or will no one mourn Wicked’s melting away into obscurity?

Wicked, true to its name, tells the back story of the Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz. She started life as Elphaba, a young girl who was bullied and ostracized for her unnatural green skin. She attends Shiz University with the hopes of harnessing her magic and the dream of one day meeting the Wizard of Oz, hoping he can rid her of her green skin so others can like her.

However, during her stay, Elphaba has to contend with Glinda, a perfectly perfect in every way sorceress-in-training. The two start off with unadulterated loathing, but eventually friendship buds between them and they decide to achieve their dreams together. But will they succeed, or are they destined to drift apart and go their separate ways? (Well, you know if you’ve seen the Wizard of Oz.)

For the record, I never watched the original Broadway musical. I had heard some of the songs, and I was somewhat familiar with the crux of the story. But as for this review, I can only judge the movie on its own merits rather than judge how faithfully it adapts the musical.

And, honestly, what can I say about this movie? What can I say to endorse it that its mere existence won’t very well do on its own? This is a film adaptation of one of the most popular musicals of all time. Even if it were bad, the fact this movie exists is enough to attract butts to seats and make the box office money machine go “brrr.”

And as someone who’s never seen the original musical, this movie certainly piqued my interest. The sets are practically practical. The costumes are elaborately elaborate. The musical numbers are catchy and larger than life. And the lead actresses Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande slay as Elpha and Glinda.

Again, as someone who’s never seen the original musical, I cannot tell how faithful the movie adaptation is. And film adaptations of musicals are notorious for being less-than-promising. However, from what I can tell from online discourse, this movie manages to do the musical justice.

If I have one major nitpick, it’s the pacing. This movie is nearly three hours long, and it certainly feels like it. Outside of the music numbers, the pacing seems to drag on to the point where you’re tempted to check the time on your watch.

Also, this movie is the first part of two parts, and it certainly feels that way. Many plot points are dropped into the story without any real build-up or payoff: Elphaba’s relationship with her sister, her budding relationship with Prince Friyero, and the political tension concerning the talking animals. All of these get briefly mentioned and then immediately forgotten about, with the intent that more will be revealed in the next part and hopes they will eventually pay off.

Otherwise, this movie certainly lives up to the reputation of the musical it’s based upon. If you’re a fan of Wicked, chances are you’ve already seen this movie twice. If you’ve never watched the musical, give this movie a chance. Either way, you’re sure to be waiting on edge for part two coming next year.

Eagle Lake Crash Yesterday Left A Mother Dead & A 2 Year Old Daughter Critically Injured

0

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a crash that resulted in the death of a 33-year old Winter Haven woman, and left her 2-year old daughter in critical condition with life threatening injuries.

Deputies were dispatched at about 1:45 pm Monday afternoon, December 2, 2024, to the crash at State Road 540 (Winter Lake Road) and Cooley Road north of Eagle Lake.

Upon arrival of first responders, the driver of a silver 2013 Hyundai Elantra was found deceased in her vehicle. Her daughter, who was properly restrained in a child safety seat, was seated in the rear of the vehicle.

The other driver, a 39-year old man from Winter Haven, was not injured. He was driving a white 2021 International utility truck.

The preliminary investigation, based on evidence and witness statements, determined that the victim’s Hyundai had been traveling south on Cooley, and the truck was going east on SR 540.

At the intersection, there is a stop sign for Cooley Road.

The Hyundai entered onto SR 540 by crossing over the westbound lanes of SR 540, then proceeded on the eastbound lanes of travel, into the path of the oncoming utility truck.

Both drivers were wearing their seat belts.

The eastbound lanes of SR 540 were closed for about three hours.

The investigation is ongoing.

Map of 2024 Parade Route

At the same time, the parade will leave the RP Funding Center, making its way down Lemon Street, twisting and turning through Downtown Lakeland.

Be sure to keep an eye out for our very special guests…Santa & Mrs. Claus!

The Christmas Parade is enjoyed by the whole community.  Please remember to keep sidewalks clear for individuals with wheelchairs, walkers and scooter

No Chairs Until the Day of the Event

The City asks that no chairs be placed on the parade route until the day of the parade.  Each year, many of those attending the parade start staking their claim earlier and earlier.  Fire Chief Doug Riley says, “We understand people want a good vantage point to watch the parade.  Unfortunately, we have chairs blocking sidewalks and crosswalks days before the parade.”  Police Chief Sammy Taylor adds, “This causes a major hazard, especially for those in our community that use wheelchairs and walkers to get around.”

The City will remove/relocate chairs that are totally blocking sidewalks, in the way of crosswalks and hindering the use of disabled parking spaces.  We understand the excitement of this yearly event, but we also want to keep in mind the safety of all our citizens.  Riley and Taylor say, “Please, no chairs on the parade route before Thursday, December 5.”  Chairs, tape, blankets and other materials used to save viewing spaces will be removed if placed in public right-of-way before the day of the parade.

Street Closures

Incremental road closures will begin as early as 3:30 pm due to enhanced safety measures. You should plan on all parade route affiliated roads being closed by 6 pm (see parade route). Officers will be staged at locations along the route to assist with traffic. Closures will be clearly marked and directional signage will be in place.

Take alternate routes such as Bartow Highway (US 98) and Harden Boulevard if you are simply trying to get from one side of town to the other.

Public Parking

Public Parking is available in Downtown Lakeland on open, non-parade-route streets, in public lots and parking garages.

Pipeline work and pavement restoration will occur in the roadway travel lanes along Lakeland Electric’s power plant frontage on East Lake Parker Drive. Minor travel delays are expected, especially during peak hour traffic. Commuters are advised to drive carefully, observe detour signs, and add extra drivetime to trips through the area.

Cooking on the Ridge: Slow Cooker Chickpea Curry

#image_title

by James Coulter

Autumn is passing. Winter is drawing near. The nights are getting longer. And the weather is getting colder. It’s the best time of year to dust off the old slow cooker.

Because nothing warms the soul after a long cold day than a warm meal prepared with a slow cooker. And nothing kicks up the heat another notch than a spicy bowl of curry.

Yes, I do love curry. Recently, I’ve been experimenting with curry recipes with the slow cooker. If you recall, I’ve prepared several recipes before, from Japanese style curry to butter chicken.

This time around, I’ve decided to try my hand at a personal favorite: chickpea curry. Because sometimes the most filling curry are surprisingly vegan.

This recipe calls for the curry to be cooked with water, though you can use broth. I decided to use heavy cream for a creamier batch, though coconut works just as well.

I also decided to kick up the spice levels a few notches with some alterations. For example, I used fire-roasted tomatoes with chilis. I sautéed the onions and garlic with jalapeno infused olive oil. And, of course, I dumped in a small can of diced jalapeños.

The result was a nice and spicy batch of curry that proved quite warming on a cold evening. My batch was slightly soupy, but if anything, it made it easier to sop with garlic naan bread.

Slow Cooker Chickpea Curry

(Recipe from Vegan in the Freezer)

Ingredients

16 ounces chickpeas, dried

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 ½ cup onion, diced

5 cloves garlic, finely chopped or minced

¼ cup tomato paste

2 cups tomatoes, diced

1 tablespoon curry powder

1 tablespoon cumin

1 tablespoon garam masala

2 teaspoons cayenne pepper

1 ½ teaspoon turmeric

½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

¼ teaspoon baking soda – this helps chickpeas to soften when cooking, just ¼ tsp.

3 cups water

Directions

1) The night before place the chickpeas in a 6-to-8-quart slow cooker and cover with water to soak. Do NOT turn it on. In the morning drain and replace the chickpeas in the slow cooker.

2) In a large skillet heat oil over medium high heat

3) Add onion and sauté for 10 minutes. Add the garlic and cook 5 more minutes.

4) Add the garlic and cook 5 more minutes

5) Scrape into the slow cooker

6) Add all of the remaining ingredients and stir well.

7) Cook on low 8 to 9 hours. Serve with Basmati rice.

Stay Safe While Scoring Big Deals: Protect Yourself from Holiday Season Cyber Threats

By Kip Kirchberg:

The two busiest shopping days of the year are fast approaching: Black Friday and Cyber Monday. While these days are thrilling for shoppers eager to snag deals, they are equally exciting for cybercriminals.

Black Friday Shopping Frenzy

According to Chain Store Age, the highest percentage of credit card fraud occurs in November. Criminals exploit these busy shopping days to make purchases using stolen credit cards.

Black Friday holds the record for the most in-person fraudulent credit card purchases. Store associates are often overwhelmed with the influx of shoppers and may not verify credit card information thoroughly, allowing criminals to slip through undetected.

Online Credit Card Fraud

Protect Yourself:

  • Avoid using debit cards for store or online purchases. Debit cards expose your bank account to risk, as cybercriminals can instantly access your cash. If your debit card is compromised, recovering lost funds can be a lengthy and difficult process.
  • Use credit cards instead. Federal law limits your liability for unauthorized use, and credit card companies typically cancel compromised cards, issue credits for fraudulent charges, and send replacement cards within days—much easier to manage compared to debit card fraud.

Cyber Monday is another prime time for cybercriminals. They often send phishing emails that appear to be from legitimate retailers. These emails may contain logos, links, and ads that look authentic.

Cyber Monday

Avoid Phishing Scams:

  • Do not click on links in emails. Instead, open a new web browser and manually type in the retailer’s website to make purchases. This ensures you’re dealing with the actual retailer and not a cybercriminal.

This information aims to help you prepare for a safe holiday shopping season. Stay vigilant and enjoy the festivities. Happy shopping!
