The Lake Wales Police & Polk County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the search for a suspect vehicle from Lakeland. The vehicle was followed or pursued by multiple law enforcement units from the multiple jurisdictions. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office helicopter had the suspect vehicle visually for many miles along Hwy 27.

Per Carrie Horstman, PIO, with the PCSO the suspect vehicle crashed in Lake Wales and the suspect(s) are in custody. The crash occurred at the intersection of Hwy 27 & Washington Ave. The Lake Wales crash occurred around 5:20pm.

Details regarding suspects will be released at a later time, but we don’t know if that is PCSO, Lake Wales PD or Lakeland PD that will release those details.

Following the shooting, Harrison was seen leaving the residence and entering a nearby residence on the same property. Gray was transported to Lakeland Regional Health via police vehicle for treatment by medical professionals but sadly succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

The Victim’s wife, who is also the Suspect’s sister told officers that Harrison had been exhibiting erratic behavior in the last week and believed he was under the influence of illegal narcotics. She conveyed Harrison came into the residence around 4:00 p.m. and asked for mail which he was anticipating. While she was searching for the mailbox key, Harrison pointed a gun in her direction then shot a laundry hamper next to her. Harrison then pointed the firearm at Gray and shot him several times in the upper torso.

The adjacent residence into which Harrison fled was occupied by an adult female. Harrison pushed the female inside the residence and threatened her with a handgun if she reported him. She advised that Harrison was in possession of two firearms. Upon the approach of law enforcement, Harrison became distracted and the Victim was able to escape to safety.

Responding officers immediately secured the scene and surrounded the residence where Harrison was hiding. He was taken into custody without further incident at 1:27 a.m.

Harrison was charged with First Degree Murder, Attempted First Degree Murder, Armed Burglary to an Occupied Dwelling, Armed Kidnapping and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

Lakeland Woman Charged With Assaulting Polk County Deputy After Domestic Dispute

0

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home in Lakeland on January 27 to investigate a domestic disturbance call.

According to reports, the victim was living with the suspect, Amy Burgess (DOB:

01/04/1975), and arrived home to find Burgess allegedly drunk and agitated. The victim feared Amy, as she had previously assaulted them on January 21, 2025. The suspect allegedly struck the victim multiple times in the face and head with a closed fist. The victim did not initially report the incident, as they did not want Amy to be arrested.

During the investigation, while the suspect was being directed by a deputy, she became combative. According to the arrest affidavit:

“I observed and heard Amy disobey multiple lawful commands to walk and stand up. I saw Amy throw her bodyweight to the floor multiple times as Deputy Goodman attempted to guide her to my vehicle. Once Amy arrived at my patrol vehicle, I witnessed her kick toward Deputy Goodman multiple times. After Deputy Goodman was able to place Amy in my patrol vehicle, she repeatedly stated, ‘Don’t fucking touch me, and began kicking at Deputy Goodman once again.”

The suspect was taken into custody and transported to jail.

Amy Burgess previously pleaded guilty to DUI in July.

SIP HAINES CITY GETS OK FOR FULL-SERVICE

BY Anita Todd, Special Articles

HAINES CITY – Sip Haines City has some new beverages on the menu.

Sip Haines City is a lounge and wine bar that, until recently, only served wine and beer in addition to a variety of menu options. However, on Jan. 9, the Haines City Commission gave approval for the establishment to become a full-service bar.

In December, Jonathan Anglin, the owner of the establishment, applied to the City of Haines City for a conditional use permit “in order to change a wine bar, Sip Haines City, to a full-service bar.

According to the request submitted to the Haines City Planning and Zoning Department, “This conditional use request is not only a necessary pivot to ensure our viability but also an opportunity to align more closely with the preferences and expectation of Haines City residents and visitors.”

At the time, there were two other full-service venues located in downtown Haines City – Rudy’s Liquorup Lounge and The Cigar Quarters. According to the request, Sip Haines City has partnered with another business with a state liquor license.

The request also reads, “Sip was originally established with a business model focused on being a high-end wine bar with a limited menu. Despite our best efforts and significant investments in the initial concept, we have faced challenges that have rendered the original business model unsustainable. Factors contributing to this include changing consumer preferences, evolving market dynamics, and unanticipated operation constraints.”

Anglin continued the request writing that by the venue becoming a full-service bar this “adjustment aligns with our commitment to adapt our offerings to better meet the desires of our customers while remaining a valued contributor to the local economy.”

The owner of the building, Christopher Diaz, spoke during the meeting in support of the request.

“The Sip bar owners have been model tenants and as the property owner, I fully support the move,” Diaz said. “It is wonderfully run and managed.” The Commission voted unanimously for approval of the request.

The business opened its doors in 2022 and can be found at siphainescity.com.

Sip Haines City is located at 21 6th Street North.

Celebrate the Dream at the Haines City MLK Parade and Unity Day on Saturday

by James Coulter

More than 60 years ago, a man dared to dream of a world where people, regardless of race and ethnicity, could live together in peace and harmony. One year later, the Civil Rights Act was passed, bringing the whole world one step closer to his dream.

Haines City will be celebrating the life and legacy of that man, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with their annual celebration, which includes a parade and unity day festival, on Saturday.

The celebration will begin with a parade through downtown at noon, starting at East Main Street and ending near Cook Field, where the Unity Day Program will be hosted following the end of the parade.

Sameka Atkins, Committee Chairwoman for the Haines City Northeast Revitalization Group, has been overseeing the annual celebration for many years.

According to their website, the Haines City Northeast Revitalization Group is a local non-profit organization dedicated to working toward “continued improvements for the beautification, education, safety and welfare of their community” and to “restore sense of community pride.”

“The progress we have made over the last few years has significantly increased,” she said. “We have done that by participating in local events and initiatives, and we support the city officials…to help bridge the gap on local issues and volunteer work.”

VISTEBall Celebrating 20 Years “Fore” a Good Cause

0

by James Coulter

Do you love golf? Want to help raise funds “fore” a good cause? Then come on down to the 20th Annual VISTEBall on Sat. Feb 1.

Hosted at the SUN ‘n FUN Expo Campus in Lakeland, VISTEBall allows attendees to enjoy golf-related games and activities including golf simulators, mini golf, and 50/50 raffles for golfing accessories.

And, of course, what fundraiser would be complete without food and drink? Nearly a dozen local resturaunts will be providing great food, including pasta, barbecue, and wings, at serving centers for the event’s main dinner.

Proceeds will go toward Volunteers in Service of the Elderly (VISTE), a local non-profit organization serving at-risk seniors in the greater Lakeland area, allowing them to live safely and independently in their own homes.

Steve Bissonnette, VISTE President, mentioned how their fundraiser was inspired by a trade show one of their members had attended. At the event was something called BirdieBall, an item that allows golfers to practice golfing in their own backyards.

“What he saw was the opportunity to turn that into games much like those at the Family Fun Center or Chuck E. Cheese, with the ability to play golf-themed games, get tickets, and trade those tickets in for prizes,” Bissonnette explained.

Over the past 20 years, VISTEBall has proven to be quite the popular fundraiser among its participants, to the point where they count down the days on the calendar until they can attend again, Bissonnette said.

“We find that there are a lot of new volunteers who come to us through their experience at this event,” he said. “What I hear the most from folks is that they keep coming back and that this is their signature event of the year, and we love to hear that.”

VISTEBall will be hosted on Sat. Feb. 1 at 6 PM at the Sun n Fun Expo Campus, located at 4075 James C. Ray Dr in Lakeland. For more info, visit VISTE.org.

Steve Bissonnette recently appeared on the Chattin on the Ridge podcast to discuss the upcoming fundraiser. Listen to the full episode on Acast: https://shows.acast.com/chattin-on-the-ridge/episodes/ep-52-honoring-mlk-at-visteball-wsameka-atkins-steve-bissonn
