Around 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 6, 2016, PCSO deputies arrested 51-year-old Anthony Stanciu of Lake Daisy Drive in unincorporated Winter Haven for one count DUI after he crashed into a mailbox heading home from the Lake Wales Mardi Gras parade. Stanciu told deputies he is a mathematics teacher at Bartow High School.

According to a PCSO affidavit, Stanciu’s vehicle hit a concrete mailbox at 62 Lake Daisy Blvd. Stanciu was observed by responding deputies with slurred speech, and deputies could smell the impurities of an alcoholic beverage coming from the vehicle. Stanciu told deputies he drank three beers at the Lake Wales Mardi Gras parade, and was heading home when he crashed into the mailbox.

Stanciu performed three field sobriety tests and exhibited several signs of impairment. Upon being booked into the jail, Stanciu gave two breath samples for a breath analysis test, which showed two separate readings of .195 and .205 alcohol content.

Stanciu was booked into the Polk County Jail, and later released after posting $500 bond

Polk County, FL – (Feb. 8, 2016) – At Polk County Fire Rescue’s recent promotional and oath of office ceremonies held on Jan. 13 and 14, more than 20 men and women were recognized.
The ceremony,  held at the Polk State College Center for Public Safety in Winter Haven,  took the time to recognize select individuals for their years of service, several newly promoted individuals and a few new hires as well.
During the ceremony, EMT Billie Williams was recognized for 10 years of service, new Training Captain Todd Tanner was recognized for 25 years of service, and Battalion Chief Jeff Calcutt, Battalion Chief Steve Lajoie and Battalion Medical Chief Steve Powell were recognized for 30 years of service to the division.
Polk County Fire Rescue also awarded several Unit Citations for ‘outstanding performance, dedication and service to the residents and visitors of Polk County, Fla.’ Scott Huff, Phillip Riddle, Brian Steger, Shawn Stewart and Rob Williams were all awarded for their performance extinguishing a fire and preserving as much evidence as possible at an active crime scene where SWAT Paramedic John Mikula had recently been shot and injured in a standoff.
Jennifer Huff, Scott Huff and Phillip Riddle were promoted to Lieutenant.
Jason Brock and Ryan Moore were promoted to Engineer.
Ashley Meyer was promoted to Paramedic.
Larry Bennett, Murphy Hanley, Bruce Lee and Michael Zarle were appointed to serve as Chaplains.
Newly hired firefighters Nathan Duncan, Devon Heathfield and Chad Kuschel took their oaths of office.
“I am continually reminding our folks that every moment of every day, whether on- or off-duty, they are representing PCFR and the Board of County Commissioners,” said Polk County Fire Rescue Chief David Cash. “We exist for one reason, to serve the residents and visitors of Polk County, and the men and women recognized at this ceremony have done exactly that. We are proud of their work.”

Polk County, FL – (Feb. 5, 2016) –Polk County Fire Rescue has recently increased its level of customer care by upgrading their fire engines in the communities of Loughman and West Frostproof, equipping them with advanced lifesaving equipment and staffing them with a paramedic 24/7. These new upgrades bring the total number Advanced Life Support (ALS) engines in the county to 13.

ALS engines are required to staff at least one paramedic on-board, as they are able to provide more advanced medical services than an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).  The now 13 fire stations in Polk County with ALS apparatus ensures that Polk’s residents and visitors will be able to receive more advanced medical care faster.

“Our goal in any medical emergency is always to get a paramedic on-scene as quickly as possible”, said Polk County Fire Rescue Chief David Cash. “Their advanced treatments and ability to administer medications could be the difference between life and death.”

He added that while EMTs may arrive on-scene first, they are able to begin life saving measures and can inform the en route paramedic of the severity of the situation so that when the paramedic arrives they are better prepared for what measures need to be taken.

During emergencies, Polk County Fire Rescue will always send out the closest engine available. Thanks to a series of interlocal agreements between many municipalities, the closest available responder, regardless of what department they work for, will be dispatched to the scene.

“When someone calls 9-1-1, they don’t care about what logo is on the side of the vehicle that shows up,” Cash said. “They just want an emergency responder there as soon as possible.”

By upgrading these engines, PCFR has better dispersed paramedics throughout the county, providing these two areas with critical support closer than previously available.

In addition to the upgraded engines in Loughman and West Frostproof, ALS apparatus currently exist in the following areas: Bradley, Caloosa Lake, Four Corners, Highland City, Indian Lake Estates, Lake Hamilton, Polk City, Providence, Sleepy Hill, Sun Air and Willow Oak.

Polk County Fire rescue is pleased to increase its customer care quality and will continue making improvements to ensure they are providing the highest level of support possible.

The Annual Budweiser Smoke on the Water BBQ Competition is hosted each February and is Florida BBQ Association’s State Championship. Funds raised benefit the Citrus Center Boys & Girls Clubs of Winter Haven, Lake Wales and Haines City. More than 80 teams from across the country will compete for the Florida State Grand Champion title. Unique entertainment includes a Cypress Water Sports Ski Show on beautiful Lake Cannon.

Come for BBQ on Saturday, February 6th. The festivities kick off at 10:00 a.m.with the national anthem and an aerial flyover. Awards for the best chicken, ribs, pork, brisket and sauce will be announced at 5:30 p.m. Can’t wait? Start the party on Friday, February 5th during the event’s sponsor Beach Party. It’s open to the public at 8:00 p.m. for a $10 donation. Cash bar, live music, fireworks and more!

INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS
  1. Combine chopped broccoli and cauliflower in large bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl combine the mayonnaise, sour cream, sugar and salt to make a dressing.
  3. Add the dressing to the broccoli/cauliflower mix, stirring to evenly coat the veggies.
  4. Stir in the bacon and cheese, reserving a small amount to sprinkle on top of salad just before serving.
  5. Refridgerate until serving.

At approximately 4:25 am, on Monday, February 1, 2016, a black, 2001 GMC Yukon, operated by 69-year-old Perry Cope Worth, Booker Street Lake Hamilton, was traveling southbound on US 27, approximately 1/4 mile south of Crump Road in Lake Hamilton.  US 27 is a six lane divided highway in the city limits of Lake Hamilton in this location. 

As Worth was traveling southbound, she drifted off the right (west) shoulder of the roadway striking numerous lane markers. Perry appears to have overcorrected, turning sharply to the left and entering back onto the roadway. 

The Yukon began to rotate counter-clockwise in a southeast direction upon entering back onto the roadway. As the Yukon rotated it began to flip several times as it travelled across the three southbound lanes of travel. 

The Yukon rolled and Perry was ejected from the vehicle and came to rest in the grass median at the edge of the northbound lanes. The Yukon came to final rest in the median approximately 400 feet from where it originally left the roadway. 

Polk County Fire and Medic units responded to the crash and declared Perry deceased. The crash occurred in the city limits of Lake Hamilton, who requested that the Sheriff’s Office assume the crash investigation.

Speed may have been a factor in this crash. Impairment is not suspected and distracted driving will be further investigated. The driver’s seat belt was found buckled and tight against the seat indicating Perry had been sitting on the belt and not utilizing it.

There is no indication of other vehicles being involved.  The investigation is ongoing.
