Unfiltered Coffee: Come For The Coffee, Stay For The Creativity

by James Coulter

A fern growing out of a saxophone. A deer head wearing a feathered crown. A rhino pulling a cart. These are only a few of the curious sites you can find on both floors of Bartow’s new coffee shop and art venue.

“Eclectic” is the most apropos word to describe Unfiltered Coffee.Connect.Create, the newest “hipster” coffee shop/art studio and gallery that opened in Downtown Bartow. Every nook and cranny contains something new to discover. A trinket here. An antique there. An art piece hanging from the wall. It’s a place where you can visit endlessly and still uncover something new.

Most casual visitors will come for coffee. As typical with most “hipster” coffee shops, their cups of Joe are brewed from beans organically grown and ethically sourced from a local craft roastery, Ethos Roasters in Lakeland. As their website states, their coffee is “committed to product excellence and ethical sourcing and their definition of coffee ‘greatness’ goes well beyond taste and freshness – and extends to the story and impact behind each bean, to their scientific approach to roasting.”

And as with any good coffee shop, there’s always a fresh-baked pastry or well-crafted quiche or breakfast sandwich to wash down with their cup of Joe. Most of their menu items are prepared by local chefs and bakers, so you know that both your drink and your food are prepared by local hands.

However, their coffee shop is only a small part of their two-floor location, consisting of equal parts artisan retail boutique, bookstore, pottery barn, photo and art gallery, artist studio, and event venue. Unfiltered Coffee truly is a place where you come for the coffee, stay for the atmosphere, and come again for the company.

“From our house to yours we intend on providing you a unique experience from the moment you walk through our door,” their website states. “Our mission is to offer a space where you can come as you are, be who you are and create from within.”

Geanie Folder is the proud owner of the coffee shop/art studio hybrid. Originally working at a nursing home, she served as a clothing designer on the side. As with many artists, she was searching for a place to sell her craft and to connect with other local artists.

She decided to kill two birds with one stone by starting the Beatnik Exchange from her family’s farm. The vintage market worked well for some time, but Folder wanted to expand her outreach further with a bigger, better venue. That’s when she was inspired to start Unfiltered with her artist friends.

“I typically surrounded myself with artists and we have a hard time selling our merchandise and getting our names out here,” she said. “When my last child left home, I knew we would start down this road [to opening out new place]…[so] we walked through the universe and went through the doors as they opened.”

She and her friends found a quaint two-floor location in Downtown Bartow along Broadway Avenue and near Main Street. After 22 months of hard work and elbow grease, they transformed it into a unique and chic business that proved to be an amalgamation of every creative art from under the sun, from furniture painting and sewing, to yoga and belly dancing.

Even in the middle of a pandemic, the sheer fact that they not only succeeded in creating their space, but drawing in people to visit it proves how much support they received from their local community.

“Bartow has always met our expectations and beyond,” Folder said. “I could have never ever opened in the middle of a pandemic and been more supportive of our community in Bartow.”

Linda Cassels-Hoffmann, who runs her art boutique Castles In The Air, is one of the many in-house artists who use Unfiltered Coffee to create and sell their art, as well as to host art classes. As a painter for 40 years, she uses her expertise to not only assist the new shop, but she also used it to help decorate the venue.

“We look at a lot of pics and put things together,” she said. “We have a mind that never stops. We don’t sleep. We wake up tired because we dream all night.”

She joined Folder when they first encountered the space that would become Unfiltered. Even as they stepped inside, they knew what they wanted to transform it into, and through their hard work, made it what it is today. Even amidst a pandemic, they were surprised by the progress they made during that time.

“It is a happy place,” she said, explaining how they want people “to see something they haven’t seen every day. This is a wonderful place that is ever-changing, something different here every day.”

Cassie Bock, the proprietor of Silver StoneWorks, is another artist in-house. True to her business’ name, she creates jewelry, mostly from sterling silver. She has been beading jewelry ever since she could remember, and silver-smithing for the past eight years.

As with most of the artists who create in the venue, they receive inspiration for the smallest of places, from flowers to leaves. Every little trinket, every small detail, hidden in the shop is another point of inspiration waiting to manifest itself into the latest creation.

“This is a very inspirational place,” she said. “It is where I get my inspiration myself…I love being with all my friends and being able to be creative. I sell jewelry and people doing classes….[I love] the serenity you feel when you come in here. It is a place to stay and hang out.”

Unfiltered Coffee.Connect.Create is located at 160 S Broadway Ave, Bartow, FL 33830. For more information, call 813-481-1234, or visit their website at: https://www.unfilteredbartow.com

0

Press Release by George Long, City Manager of Bartow, FL.

Regarding Citywide residential distribution of cloth masks:

These are unprecedented times. Since early March of this year, I have held weekly emergency policy meetings with Bartow senior staff to develop and execute the approach that we’ve taken in response to COVID-19. Protecting the health of all those who live and work in our community and ensuring the continued delivery of essential city services has been the focus of these efforts.

Many of us have experienced interruptions to our normal way of life in 2020, including park closures, the cancellation of our July 4th holiday events, and the expected cancellations of our fall and winter holiday parades. Even with these interruptions, I am proud to say that our City and its people have been remarkably resilient in coping with the pandemic’s everyday challenges. Thanks to your ingenuity and sense of individual responsibility, our community businesses and restaurants have been able to safely reopen and many of us are back at work helping to restore our economy to pre-pandemic levels. With your help and continued responsible efforts, we will meet these challenges and see them through to their end!

In a further effort to help prevent the spread of COVID in our community, the City of Bartow is providing four (4) cloth masks to every residence in the City of Bartow via mail. These cloth masks are for use indoors and outdoors when social distancing cannot be maintained. Recommendations for proper mask use and cleaning will be included with the package.

Together we can limit and potentially stop the spread of this virus in our community. Please note the #WEAREBARTOW hashtag (We Are Bartow) on the masks. Wear them proudly or pass them along to someone in need. Keep an eye out for you package as your masks will arrive shortly.

Thank you for doing your part. WE ARE BARTOW!

Woman Arrested and Charged With Failing to Redeliver a Hired Vehicle

Release by Polk County Sheriff’s Office

On Monday, August 31st, a stolen Jeep Cherokee was spotted by deputies on Avenue G NW in the Haven of Winter, and it pulled into the parking lot of Green’s Market.

For those not aware, Green’s Market is located catty-corner from the PCSO Central District Substation. Now, we’re not ones to give people tips on how to get away with a crime, but we would think that if one was committing a crime (such as driving around in a stolen vehicle), one would do it in an area where deputies don’t drive up-and-down the road all throughout the day.

Allison though is a rebel. Common sense be darned.

When deputies got to the Jeep, it was unoccupied but still running.

Deputies went into the store and were directed to the women’s restroom.

All of the deputies on scene were dudes, and none of them wanted to enter the women’s room with their eyes closed, so they convinced the women to come out.

Eventually, it was determined that Allison’s friend was not involved, so she was turned loose.

The Jeep had been rented by Allison and another woman (who wasn’t present) last week and it was never returned.
Allison told the deputies that she decided to keep the Jeep for a few days more. She didn’t bother telling the rental company though, so they reported it stolen.

The reason Allison held on to the Jeep longer? Because she had a court appearance Monday morning….yet she didn’t make an attempt to return the Jeep after court either (she was caught after 5pm).

Allison was arrested despite her strategic argument against going to jail by saying that she didn’t know that the Jeep was stolen.

Allison was transported to the Polk Pokey and charged with Failing to Redeliver a Hired Vehicle.

Nearly 90 Boats Arrive For Frostproof We Care Open Bass Tournament

Nearly 90 Boats Arrive For Frostproof We Care Open Bass Tournament

by James Coulter

Mike Akers and his fishing partner Mike Wiley travel all around to fish and attend fishing tournaments. They traveled from Vero Beach to participate in the Frostproof We Care Open Bass Tournament last Saturday.

Not only did they have the opportunity to participate, but they also won first place, reeling in a catch that weighed a whopping 25.82 pounds. The two of them owe their success with “good frog bait”, explained Akers.

The two of them are avid fishermen who travel everywhere for bass fishing. As for this tournament, they loved it not only for the great opportunity but also for the chance to help support a good cause.

“It is a good tournament with a good cause,” Akers said. “That is the main reason why we came out, just to help out the family…It was a good turnout for a very good cause, and we are happy to see this many people.”

The Frostproof We Care Open Bass Tournament was hosted on Saturday at Camp Mack in Lake Wales. The fundraising event was held to support the families of Damion Tillman, Brandon Rollins, and Keven Springfield, three young men whose lives were tragically cut short a few months ago following a grisly murder.

More than 89 boats participated that day, with participants traveling from as far as Sarasota, Tamps, and Fort Myers. Each of their catches was weighed, with the top five heaviest loads winning cash prizes and ribbons. Other attendees that day could also participate in 50/50 raffle drawings for prizes.

“It is a great turnout,” said Katrina Jackson, who organized the event with her husband, Scott. “We had over 100 people call me. I am surprised we would have so many people come out that did.”

Jackson knew many of the victims and their families. She knew Brandon ever since he was a baby. She knew Damion’s mother, who worked with her son at the family dollar store. While she did know Kevin personally, she and her family gathered school supplies for his children.

Both Katrina and her husband wanted to honor the memory of the victims and support their families. For that reason, they organized the fishing tournament. They could not be any prouder of their community for the turnout.

“We should come together as a community when people suffer loss,” she said. “We should support them in whatever means that we can. We appreciate everyone coming out here, all our volunteers, and the people who donated, the people who came out to participate.”

Balmoral Lights Up The Night With Back to School Glow Party

Balmoral Lights Up The Night With Back to School Glow Party

by James Coulter

As the sun set upon Balmoral Resort in Haines City, the pool area outside the bar and grill illuminated with glowing sticks and the flashing lights from the DJ booth.

Children big and small, wearing glowing jewelry around their necks and wrists, gather around the pool. On the count of three, several dozen glow sticks are tossed into the water, followed by the splashing of little feet and hands swimming to grab them.

These wet and wild festivities were some of the fun glow-in-the-dark activities hosted last Friday during the Back to School Glow Party at Balmoral Resort.

For the low cost of $15, children and their families had access to the pool area, where they could splash about and have fun with glow-in-the-dark games and activities.

DJ Melvin offered some sweet tunes to liven the gathering that evening, with participants getting their groove on both in and out of the pool.

Best of all, anyone who brought along $5 worth of school supplies received a free order of chips and salsa. Of course, anyone could order anything they wanted off the menu, from flatbread wraps to tacos.

With Polk County schools having recently re-opened for the new school year, especially amid the COVID-19 crisis, this back-to-school event was hosted to allow children to enjoy the last few moments of summer before returning to yet another stressful school year.

“We did this event because we knew the kids had a rough week going back to school with COVID and make sure that they get to enjoy the week,” said Amber Pearce, Senior Event Manager of Feltrim Sports. “We wanted them to be able to come out tonight and enjoy their evening while being COVID safe.”

More than two dozen children and their families arrived that evening for the event. Even a few hours of late Friday night fun was more than enough to allow children to enjoy their last moments of summer and help prepare them for the upcoming school year.

“I am really happy with the number of kids we have out here,” Amber said. “It seems like they are having a great time and that is the goal ultimately. I am enjoying being able to hang out with the kids and see them enjoy themselves. That is the most important thing.”

Balmoral Bar And Grill hosts various family-friendly events every day of the week. They host Munchkin Monday will children and crafts, trivia nights on Tuesday, karaoke on Wednesday, The Lineup on Thursday, live music on Friday and Saturday, and a family dance party on Sunday.

On Fri., Sept. 25, Balmoral will host the Northeast Polk County Chamber of Commerce 38th Annual Pig Roast and Political Rally, where local political candidates will mingle with guests over barbecue to discuss the political issues of the day. Pearce and her venue are most excited about being able to host such a momentous community event.

“I think I never worked for a more quality company in my life, and I am grateful to work here and work with Balmoral Resort,” she said. “What they are doing in our community with our families and without children, providing a fun, healthy place for them to come and hang out.”

Lynn Zembra, a local from Haines City, regularly visits Balmoral for their events big and small. She enjoys frequenting the bar and grill for the food and drinks, and especially for live music.

While the music offered at the Back To School Bash was not her cup of tea, she appreciated being exposed to music outside of her comfort zone, and she likewise appreciated being able to see something hosted for the local children.

“It is family-oriented with a lot of families and interaction with other people,” she said. “I think they are doing great trying to remote everything we can do as a local business in the area.”
