Man Allegedly Stabbed Over Beer Money In Winter Haven

Winter Haven, Florida – On 07/18/2016 at approximately 8:19 pm, PCSO deputies responded to the intersection of Rifle Range Road and Carter Road in the vicinity of Winter Haven, FL in reference to a reported stabbing. Upon arrival, deputies observed the victim, Charles Jordan, was bleeding on the left side of his face, as well as the left side of his abdomen. Jordan advised that he and the suspect, Micheal Newman, were in a verbal argument on Rifle Range Road and Carter Road over money. Jordan was working for the money and Newman taking the money and buying beer. Jordan told him he was not going to give him any more money. A witness advised he saw both Newman and Jordan arguing. Jordan walked away from Newman. The witness then allegedly heard Newman state he is going to get him (Jordan). The witness said the argument escalated and Newman  stabbed Jordan multiple times with an unknown object on the left side of his face and the left side of stomach and then fled the scene on foot. Jordan was transported via ambulance to Lakeland Regional Medical Health Center. While at LRHMC, it was learned Jordan sustained stab wounds to the left side of his face and the left side of his stomach under his ribs. These injuries were determined to be non-life threatening by LRHMC. Deputy Kendrick and his K-9 partner, “Hammer” responded to the scene to search for Newman. During the search, deputy Shaw located a witness who advised Newman had entered a yard on 5th Street West. While searching that area, deputy Kendrick shouted multiple warnings to Newman, advising him to come out or a Sheriff’s Office K-9 would be released to bite him.

Newman was found concealing himself underneath this residence (mobile home), and refused to surrender to the deputy even with the K-9 approximately one foot away from him. Since Newman refused to comply with the deputies lawful commands to surrender, the deputy released K-9 Hammer, who apprehended Newman on the right leg and pulled him out from underneath the mobile home. During a post-Miranda interview of Newman at Bartow Regional Medical Center, Newman allegedly advised he was drinking with Jordan and having a good time when Jordan hit him and then he hit Jordan back. He took off running because he did not want to go to jail.

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, vinegar, and lime juice. Season with chili powder, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Place the chicken in a shallow baking dish with the sauce, and stir to coat. Cover, and marinate in the refrigerator at least 1 hour.
  2. Preheat the grill for medium-high heat. Thread chicken onto skewers, and discard marinade.
  3. Lightly oil the grill grate. Grill skewers for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the chicken juices run clear.

Pokémon Go is a phone app that is downloaded to smart phones. Much like geocaching, it’s a “seek & find” game encouraging the user to get out and locate the various characters. The app uses augmented reality by tapping your phone’s camera to superimpose Pokémon characters in the real world.

 

The app has been downloaded more than a million times since it was released last week. The intent of the game is for fun and a lot of people are enjoying the adventure. But as with most things, with fun can come with dangers. (Remember, there are people behind the placement of certain characters and sometimes this can lead to a dangerous situation.)
 

Although there have been no reported incidents in Winter Haven, across the United States, the game has led to people being lured into situations that have been dangerous, such as being robbed. In fact, a teen found a dead body in Wyoming while playing the game.
 

With that in mind, the Winter Haven Police Department is giving a few tips while playing the game:

  1. It is advisable to stay in areas that you know and not wander into a location that is unfamiliar to you.
    2. Never venture out with the game alone. Besides, participating in this with a group is much more fun!
    3. The game should NOT be used while driving. This is a new form of distracted driving, which could potentially be a dangerous problem.
    4. If you are walking around Winter Haven, please stop before crossing the street or entering crosswalks. Drivers do not know you are playing Pokémon Go. Use caution.
    5. While in our parks or walking along the trails, remember to be considerate of those around you and please don’t trample the bushes!
    6. We want everyone to be safe and have fun. However, if you see something suspicious, please be sure to call us. You can help us with Crime Prevention throughout our wonderful city!

Lake Wales, Florida – The Polk County Fire Rescue was called out to a late night fire Saturday in Lake Wales. The fire took place at a home on Fairmont Road in Lake Wales. The 1,208 square foot home was fully involved when crews arrived. Two people were taken to the hospital.

No further information is available at this time. The home appears to be a total loss.

Lakeland, Florida – At approximately 2:40pm Saturday afternoon Polk County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to a crash on S.R. 33 near Faith Baptist Church in Lakeland. According to Donna Wood, Public Information Officer, with the PCSO the crash involved a fatality. Wood advised the DailyRidge.Com that one person was killed and two others were transported for medical care. The accident was still under investigation at this time and only limited information was available.

Update: 40-year-old Osiel Montoya-Aguilar who was killed in the accident leaves behind a wife and 4 children 10,5,3,and 7 months old.

Lakeland, Florida – At approximately 1:15 pm, on Saturday, July 16, 2016, a black, 1999 Ford F150, driven by 34-year-old Jacob W. Herrington, of  Grove Place, Lakeland, and a green 1997, Oldsmobile, driven by J. Guadalope Gonzalez-Lopez,  of Pine Village Circle, Lakeland, were both traveling east on Rockridge Road in Lakeland.

 

Gonzalez-Lopez began to stop to make a left turn onto Gator Creek Ranch Road when the F150 rear-ended the Oldsmobile.

 

The Oldsmobile was pushed approximately 35 feet past the intersection and came to final rest in the westbound lane of Rockridge Road.  There was significant damage to the rear-end of the Oldsmobile.

 

Gonzalez-Lopez and two passengers sitting in the back seat had to extricated from the Oldsmobile.  The driver side rear passenger in the Oldsmobile died at the scene.

 

Those passengers were:

 

  • 40-year-old Osiel Montoya-Aguilar, of  Speer Creek Park, Plant City (driver side rear passenger – deceased)

 

  • 34-year-old Nicholas Ramirez, Fancy Farms Road, Plant City, stable condition at Lakeland Regional Health (Front passenger)

 

  • 42-year-old Zacharias Balthazar, of  Nichols Road, Lithia, critical condition at LRH (middle rear passenger)

 

  • 25-year-old Elmer Garcia, of Barron Drive, Plant City, critical condition at LRH (passenger side rear)

 

At this time in the investigation, impairment on Herrington does not appear to be a factor.  However, speed and distraction may have played a role.

 

The airbag in the F150 deployed and Herrington was wearing a seatbelt.

 

Gonzalez-Lopez and Ramirez appear to have been wearing seatbelts, however the rear passengers were not wearing seatbelt.

 

Herrington was arrested for carrying a concealed firearm which was located on his person during the investigation.

 

The crash investigation is ongoing.

Lake Wales, FL – Cesar Leon from the Cardiac Cath Lab was named Employee of the Month for June at Lake Wales Medical Center. Leon, who has worked at the hospital since 2014, was recognized for his solid work ethic and for the excellent patient care he provides.

 

“He will do any part of a procedure that he is asked, without hesitation,” his supervisor wrote in nominating him. “He treats patients like they are his own family. He explains the procedure to the patients, which makes them feel comfortable.  He goes the extra mile, not looking for recognition but because it’s the right thing to do.”

 

Cesar also is the department’s Safety Coach, and takes the role seriously.

 

“As our safety coach, Cesar is instrumental in providing a daily safe environment,” Cath Lab Manager Sal Lopez said. “He has a passion and is proud to be the safety coach. He always puts the team ahead of himself.”

Lakeland Florida – The Lakeland Police Department is morning the sudden loss of Betty Aikens who has been with the department for nearly 30 years. Aikens was a supervisor in the 911 dispatch department. Aikens service to the community wasn’t only at the Lakeland Police Department. She started her service for the community way back in 1976 with the Polk County Clerk of Courts. She then took a position as a duty officer, dispatcher, with the Florida Highway Patrol before moving on to LPD.  Described by many as being beautiful and bubbly. Co-workers are extremely saddened by the loss.

Services have not yet been announced.

World’s Largest Golf Outing Coming To Country Club Of Winter Haven To Benefit Wounded Warriors

The World’s Largest Golf Outing (WLGO) is about having a great day of golf with friends, family and colleagues, while benefiting Fisher House Foundation (FHF).

Fisher House Foundation is a non-profit which is best known for a network of comfort homes where military and veterans’ families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment.

 

This WLGO event is an 18 hole four person team scramble format. The registration fee includes a $10 per player donation, green fee, shared cart, warm up bucket, lunch, a WLGO gift bag, local prizes and awards ceremony following play.

 

If you plan on being a foursome we recommend selecting one individual to purchase your team to avoid accidental duplicate purchases.  Please know that if you register as a single or twosome you will not be able to combine fundraising efforts with another team.  However, you can request to be paired together for playing purposes.
