Three Young Boxers Win Silver Gloves Boxing Event, Move On To Regionals

by James Coulter

The only thing that makes boxing coach Zee Zamora prouder than seeing his students win big is when his students are his own sons.

Three young boxers from the Winter Haven Boxing Club recently returned as winners from the Silver Gloves boxing event earlier this month in Tampa. These three will be eligible to compete in regionals early next year in Washington D.C.

Two of these young boxers are the sons of coach Zamora: Zee, 11, and Dax, 8. The other is another one of his students, Devine Erazo, 12.

During his training sessions at the club, Zamora pushes his students to strive to do better than their best, especially when those students are his own sons.

“I want to actually see them push forward even when they are pushing backwards, or they feel that the world is pushing them backwards,” Zamora said. “It makes me proud as a father than they can go out there and handle what they need to come across to make sure that they come on top.”

His eldest son, Zee, has been boxing for the past four years as a way to gain confidence after being picked on by bullies at his old school of Garden Grove Elementary.

Ever since he started boxing, he no longer has a problem with bullies, especially now that he attends Brigham Academy.

His training under his dad and his other coach, Marco Fazzini, has allowed him to gain both strength and confidence.

Though the training sessions have been difficult, especially when it involves abstaining from sugary sweets, the progress he has made has been more than worth it for him.

This year will be the second time that he has competed in regionals, and he’s more than looking forward to winning again this time around.

“Training is hard, but once you get into fighting, it’s fun,” he said.

His younger brother, Dax, 8, has also gained a lot of progress since starting boxing two years ago.

Seeing his brother and father train together inspired him to take up boxing, and he begged and pleaded with his parents to allow him to start training as well.

Though he has won no belts, he did manage to win a trophy after winning a state championship in Fort Pierce earlier this year.

Being able to move onto regionals this year is yet another proud accomplishment of his, and it has all be due to the support he has received from both his father and older brother.

“I have learned a lot,” he said. “My coach and my dad are so good, and my brother who helps me spare [is also] good.”

The other young boxer that Zamora has been coaching is Devine Erazo, who not only won Silver Gloves, but also won the Florida State POW! (Police Athletic League) tournament earlier in October.

Erazo started boxing at the gym two years ago, and has been interested in boxing ever since his father introduced him to the sport at the young age of eight.

The training he gained during that time has taught him to never give up and to always push himself to do better than his best, and in the process, gain respect, confidence, and discipline.

Though a nice kid outside of the ring, his friends quickly become rivals once he steps into the ring, he said.

“When I am in there [at the gym], I am your friend; but when I am in the ring, you are not my friend no more,” he said.

When it comes to training his students, Zamora teaches them to always do more than what is expected and to always go above and beyond their own capabilities.

“Nothing is given to you, you want it, you have to go and get it,” he said. “If we can go ahead and make that path for them in the road, they know what to expect, they are not being let down by the world.”

Training both of his sons to box has allowed him to pass down a family tradition that began with him and his dad, and which he now shares with his own two sons.

As for Devine, while not his son, as he treats most of his students no different than his own children, he has placed enough faith and determination in him and has not been the least bit disappointed in his own training.

“He is a little kid,” Zamora said. “He works harder than most adults that I know of. He doesn’t complain. He does what he has to do. He will go back to his house and do a little more.”

Polk County Sheriff’s Press Release

On 12/23/17, around 3:50 p.m. PCSO Deputies responded to a motorcycle vs. vehicle crash located at SR 60 and Bonnie Mine Rd in Mulberry. Upon arrival of emergency personnel, life saving measures (CPR) were attempted on the injured motorcyclist and he was transported to Bartow Memorial Hospital by ground.

Preliminary investigation suggests traffic had come to a complete stop at the railroad crossing on Hwy 60 east just east of Bonnie Mine Rd in Mulberry. During this time, 50-year-old Douglas Kates of Blown Feather Lane in Mulberry was operating a 2012 black Yamaha R1 at a high rate of speed while he was traveling east on SR 60. Kates was unable to stop his motorcycle in time due to his speed and he struck the rear of a stopped 2015 Jeep Patriot, being driven by 52-year-old James Nimmo of North Nashua Ave in Mulberry. Kates was ejected from the motorcycle and his head struck the rear tailgate of the Jeep. Emergency personnel attempted life saving measures but Kates was pronounced deceased after being transported to the hospital.

At the time of the crash, Kates was wearing a helmet and the occupants of the Jeep were both wearing their seatbelts.

Witnesses were located and confirmed Kates was driving at a high rate of speed through traffic prior to the crash.

Polk County Sheriffs Office Press Release

Around 5:30 p.m. on December 22, 2017, the PCSO Emergency Communications Center (ECC) received a 911 call regarding a two-vehicle crash on Cypress Gardens Road at Lameraux Road, Winter Haven. The Winter Haven Fire Department, Polk County Fire Rescue, and PCSO deputies responded to the scene. Upon arrival they found 81-year-old Dorothy Jean Stricklen of Audubon Rd in Winter Haven deceased in her vehicle, a 2013 silver Toyota SUV. The other driver, 25-year-old Shelby Lynn Lee of South Lake Star Blvd in Lake Wales, who was driving a 2013 green Ford F-150, was not injured.

Cypress Gardens Road in the area of the crash is a two-lane road that connects numerous residential neighborhoods. It has grass shoulders and a 40 mph speed limit. Lameraux Road is a two lane road that runs north off Cypress Gardens Road, also connecting numerous neighborhoods. There is a stop sign on southbound Lameraux Road at the intersection with Cypress Gardens Road.

Evidence at the scene and witness statements indicate that Stricklen was southbound on Lameraux Road at the intersection with Cypress Gardens Road. It is unclear at this time if she stopped at the stop sign. She attempted to turn from southbound Lameraux Road onto eastbound Cypress Gardens Road, but pulled into the path of Lee’s pick-up truck, which was westbound on Cypress Gardens Road and unable to stop.

Both drivers were seat belted and the airbags in both vehicles deployed. Both were the only occupants of their vehicles.

There were no signs of impairment on the part of either driver. Excessive speed is not believed to be a factor for either vehicle. Distracted driving does not appear to be a factor. No civil or criminal charges are expected. Cypress Gardens Road was closed in both directions for approximately 4 hours during the investigation

Four Arrested in Retal Theft Ring Targeting Home Depot in 6 Counties

PCSO Release:

On December 20, 2017, the PCSO Organized Retail Crime (ORC) Unit charged four out of five suspects (one died in November) who were working together to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of merchandise from Home Depot stores in six counties during an 11-month time frame: Polk, Hillsborough, Lake, Orange, Osceola, and Seminole. In all, the suspects were charged with 26 felonies by the Office of the Statewide Prosecutor. The suspects committed 275 confirmed thefts during the time frame July 2016 – June 2017, depriving Home Depot of over $222,000.

The investigation began in April 2017 when PCSO was contacted by Home Depot loss prevention personnel. The suspects worked together, under the direction of Alberto Vera-Caraballo, to take merchandise (including flooring, vanities, countertops, doors, tools, and accessories) to the self-checkout lanes, and while one suspect distracted the clerk, the other suspect walked out of the store with the items in a cart, bypassing all points of sale. The suspects would then return the stolen merchandise back inside the store in exchange for a Home Depot gift card. They then sold the gift cards at a jewelry store in Altamonte Springs.

Transactions involving the return of merchandise without a receipt in exchange for a Home Depot gift card require a person to use personal identification – in some incidents, the suspects used their own ID cards; in several other incidents, the suspects used the stolen identification cards from 15 victims, 13 of whom live in Florida, and 2 of whom live in Texas.

From November 2016 to February 2017, the suspects committed 19 of the 275 thefts at the Home Depot store located at 6335 South Florida Avenue in Lakeland, stealing over $16,000 worth of merchandise to make fraudulent returns.

In all, the suspects obtained 271 Home Depot gift cards, totaling $220,000 – Alberto then sold them to a jewelry store for a total value of $149,000 ($71,000 less than the face value of the cards). Recently, Home Depot changed their return policy, no longer allowing the private sale of Home Depot gift cards.

The suspects’ criminal histories have a combined total of 27 prior felonies, and 26 prior misdemeanors

Upon completion of the investigation, PCSO detectives obtained warrants for all five suspects’ arrests, then learned one of the suspects died on November 5, 2017. She was Michdalie Palerm-Martinez, DOB 11/5/77, the girlfriend of the ringleader, Alberto Vera-Caraballo. She completed one fraudulent return using her own ID card, and several returns using stolen ID cards. She also used a stolen ID to bond Alberto out of jail in April 2017. The charges on her warrant were: 1 count organized scheme to defraud over $50,000 (F-1); 1 count conspiracy to commit fraud over $50,000 (F-2); 1 count grand theft over $100,000 (F-1); 1 count conspiracy to commit grand theft over $100,000 (F-2); 1 count organized dealing in stolen property (F-1); and 1 count criminal use of personal ID (F-3). Her criminal history includes one prior felony and 2 prior misdemeanors.

The following suspects were arrested and/or charged:

Alberto Vera-Caraballo, DOB 7/23/69, of Cypress Bay Court, Orlando – he is currently being held in the Osceola Jail on no bond – PCSO detectives served the warrant on him there for:

  • 1 count organized scheme to defraud over $50,000 (F-1)
  • 1 count conspiracy to commit fraud over $50,000 (F-2)
  • 1 count grand theft over $100,000 (F-1)
  • 1 count conspiracy to commit grand theft over $100,000 (F-2)
  • 1 count organized dealing in stolen property (F-1)
  • 1 count criminal use of personal ID (F-3)

Alberto was the leader of this group of suspects, and recruited others to make fraudulent returns. He is responsible for organizing the execution of 275 confirmed thefts, 19 of which occurred in Polk County. From July 2016 to March 2017, Alberto alone made 164  transactions at a jewelry store in Altamonte Springs, selling 271 Home Depot gift cards valued at over $220,000 for $149,000 ($71,000 less than the actual value). He has been in the Osceola County Jail since October 1, 2017, for 2 counts failure to appear, and 1 count possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. His criminal history includes 20 prior felonies, 17 prior misdemeanors, and 13 failures to appear.

Victor Diaz-Martinez, DOB 8/9/67, of Tikimber Lane, Orlando – he is Michdalie’s cousin (see above) – he was arrested on December 20th in Orange County and is being housed in the Orange County Jail for:

  • 1 count organized scheme to defraud over $50,000 (F-1)
  • 1 count conspiracy to commit fraud over $50,000 (F-2)
  • 1 count grand theft over $100,000 (F-1)
  • 1 count conspiracy to commit grand theft over $100,000 (F-2)
  • 1 count organized dealing in stolen property (F-1)
  • 1 count criminal use of personal ID (F-3)

Victor was involved in the 275 confirmed thefts, 19 of which were in Polk County. He completed three fraudulent returns using his own ID card, and several returns using stolen ID cards. He recently bonded out of the Osceola County Jail. His criminal history includes 5 prior felonies, and 7 prior misdemeanors.

Alexander Febles-Mirelis, DOB 12/4/81, of Desoto Drive, Kissimmee – he is Giselle’s husband (see below) – he has a Polk County warrant for his arrest, and is believed to be in the Miami area. He has a Polk County warrant for:

  • 1 count conspiracy to commit fraud over $50,000 (F-2)
  • 1 count conspiracy to commit grand theft over $100,000 (F-2)
  • 3 counts organized dealing in stolen property (F-1)

Alexander was involved in 4 confirmed thefts, none of which were in Polk County. He completed three fraudulent returns using his own ID card. His criminal history includes a prior felony.

Giselle Sanchez Juala, DOB 11/15/76, of Desoto Drive, Kissimmee – she is Alexander’s wife (see above) – she has a Polk County warrant for his arrest, and is believed to be in the Miami area. She has a Polk County warrant for:

  • 1 count conspiracy to commit fraud over $50,000 (F-2)
  • 1 count conspiracy to commit grand theft over $100,000 (F-2)
  • 1 count organized dealing in stolen property (F-1)

Giselle was involved in one confirmed theft, not in Polk County. She admitted to fraudulently returning property with her husband, and giving the gift cards to Alberto. She attempted to complete a fraudulent return but was declined.
