Gaskins Barbecue & Lobster Brings The Taste Of Maine To Florida

Gaskins Barbecue & Lobster Brings The Taste Of Maine To Florida

by James Coulter

Do you like barbecue? Do you like seafood? Can’t decide which one you’d prefer? Why not both? A new Winter Haven eatery allows you to enjoy both.

Gaskins Barbecue & Lobster at Winter Haven does something that most people consider unimaginable, if not impossible: uniting the North and South. This new eatery serves the best of Maine seafood and lobster as well as good, old-fashioned Southern barbecue.

Whether you’d prefer a smoked lobster roll prepared from seafood freshly-delivered from the waters of Maine, or fall-off-the-bone ribs and brisket smoked over oak wood for up to 16 hours, Gaskins has the food your taste buds desire for lunch and dinner.

Their smoked lobster roll is highly recommended for anyone who has ever desired lobster from Maine without having to travel thousands of miles up north. Barbecue lovers will love the Krazy Karolina sandwich with pulled pork topped with sweet sauce and coleslaw on a bun. Either way, their seafood and barbecue offer the best of both worlds.

“We are featuring New York-style seafood, along with barbecue, and it seems like a good combo,” said Jeane Gaskins, who co-owns the eatery with her husband, John. “There’s a lot of people who really like barbecue but who do not like seafood and vice versa. So we are getting a mix then.”

This is the second location for their restaurant. Their first one is located in York Beach, Maine. They had been running the original location for the past three years, and have since sought a second location in Florida.

Gaskins herself is originally from Haines City. She considered it a no-brainer to open their new location in Winter Haven, as it’s one of the busier cities within the county. It’s the same city where her children go to school and where they shop, she said.

Previously, they lived in Brevard County while her husband was in the military. Afterward, they opened up several eateries before moving up north and opening the original Gaskins.

Originally, their eatery was going to serve barbecue. Upon learning of the high demand for lobster, they decided to offer lobster meals such as smoked lobster rolls. Both the lobster and barbecue proved popular, and their restaurant has been thriving three years since, she said.

Since opening their Winter Haven location nearly a month ago, business has done exceptionally well. What has allowed their business to remain as successful, either in Maine or Florida, has been their fresh seafood. Their new location receives shipments three to four shipments per week.

Whether you want lobster or barbecue, Gaskins will gladly serve you either or both. Either way, new customers can expect something quite unique that they can’t find anywhere else, and thus will have them coming back for more.

“There [are] not really any lobster rolls anywhere around here. They are either in Orlando or Melbourne, so it is bringing a little bit of New England down to Winter Haven,” Gaskins said. “There are a lot of barbecue places, but we do a twist on different barbecue items, if you always wanted to go to New England and have a lobster roll, you can have that exactly down here. We do ours exactly as they do it up in New England.”

Gaskins Barbecue & Lobster is located at 600 Cypress Gardens Blvd, Winter Haven, FL 33880. For more information, visit https://gaskinsbarbecue.com, or call 863-656-1605.

Lakeland Man Arrested After Lengthy Standoff

Update: Lakeland man arrested after lengthy standoff

30-year-old Nickolus P. Johnson was taken into custody last night at approximately 8:20 p.m. at his and his mother’s residence located at 4206 Deeson Rd., Lakeland after a standoff lasting about 23 hours. Johnson has been charged with Attempted 2nd degree homicide, Shooting into an Occupied Vehicle, Armed Kidnapping [2 counts], Child Abuse [2 counts], Resisting without Violence, Discharging Firearm On Residential Property, Improper Exhibition of a Firearm, Culpable Negligence, Shooting at a Dwelling, and Criminal Mischief. He was also served with an Ex Parte Order for an involuntary mental illness evaluation and a Risk Protection Order.

The incident started when Johnson shot at his ex-girlfriend at 9:30 p.m. Monday, January 1, 2020, when she arrived at the location to pick up their two children (4 YOA and 9 YOA). The victim told deputies she went to the residence after she received a phone call from Nickolus Johnson. She said he was making irrational statements on the phone. She said shortly after she arrived, Johnson displayed a firearm and began firing at her vehicle while she was inside of it. One projectile struck the front center windshield of her vehicle. She fled the scene and called the Sheriff’s Office.

Nickolus barricaded himself inside the residence, armed and still accompanied by the two children. Deputies responded and a perimeter was established around the home. Johnson refused to exit the home with the children and refused to let the children leave. However, deputies were able to establish a dialogue with him. The PCSO SWAT and Crisis Negotiations Teams were then called out.

Prior to their arrival, Nickolus Johnson’s mother, 49-year-old Nikki Whigham, arrived on scene. She was asked multiple times to stay back from the scene but continued to try to walk past deputies.  She began yelling to her son not to come out of the house and not to co-operate with law enforcement further endangering the safety of the children and deputies on scene.  She was given the opportunity to willingly leave the secured area to which she became verbally combative with deputies and continued to impede the efforts of officers to bring about a peaceful resolution.  She was subsequently arrested and transported to the Polk County Jail for Resisting a Law Enforcement Officer without Violence.

Further investigation of Johnson revealed that he had a history of mental health issues including four Baker Acts in Polk and Hillsborough Counties. Over a period of 23 hours, the Polk County SWAT Team, Lakeland PD SWAT team, and the Crisis Negotiations Team responded to the scene to safely take Johnson into custody and safely recover the children. Negotiators maintained communication with Johnson, off and on, throughout the standoff. Johnson told deputies several times that he had no intention of hurting the children, but he continued to refuse to come out of the house or allow the children to leave.

Thursday night at approximately 8:20 p.m. deputies were able to position themselves near an exterior door to the home and were able to take Johnson into custody when he opened the door. Both children were recoveredthey did not appear to be physically harmed. The children were turned over to DCF, who is working to reunite the children with family members. A .380 semi-automatic handgun was found unsecured in the same room where Johnson was taken into custody.

Johnson was booked into the Polk County Jail, where he was also served an Ex Parte Order and served with a Risk Protection Order. He is being held on no bond.

Original Release:

A standoff lasting about 23 hours ended last night at approximately 8:20 p.m. after deputies were able to safely take into custody 30-year-old Nickolus P. Johnson of Lakeland. Johnson refused to come out of his mother’s home with two children, ages 9 and 4, after deputies responded to his mother’s home (where he was staying, his mother was not home at the time) on Deeson Road at 9:30 p.m., Monday, January 1, 2020, after gun shots were reported. Deputies made contact with the mother of the children (from Tampa) she told deputies Johnson shot at her (possibly 4 times) with a handgun when she arrived to pick up the children. She fled and called 9-1-1. She was uninjured.

Responding Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputies set up a perimeter around the house and established communications with Johnson. He advised the children were ok and he was not coming out of the residence. For 23 hours, Johnson assured deputies he did not want to hurt the children. Johnson fluctuated from being irate to calm without warning or provocation. The PCSO SWAT team responded hours after the initial call and maintained a perimeter while deputies continued to communicate and negotiate with the suspect. The Lakeland Police Department SWAT team relieved the PCSO team early in the morning and the PCSO SWAT team relieved LPD earlier yesterday.

Negotiators continued to communicate with Johnson, off and on, throughout the day. This evening deputies were able to make contact with Johnson near the front door of the home and were able to safely take him into custody. Both children are in good condition and are being reunited with family members.

Johnson is in the process of being arrested and booked into the Polk County Jail. He will be charged with attempted murder (because he shot at his ex-girlfriend on January 1st) and other charges.

We will bring you more information as it becomes available.

This Laundromat Was Robbed Twice, Yet It Still Offered One Month Of Free Laundry To Two Families

This Laundromat Was Robbed Twice, Yet It Still Offered One Month Of Free Laundry To Two Families

by James Coulter

Doing laundry can be a real chore for Winter Haven resident Siara Bosworth. For the past month, she’s been forced to use her bathtub to do her laundry. She can’t even afford laundry detergent, so she often uses whatever soap she can find including dish soap.

Not making matters easy for her has been her arm, which she broke several months ago. Her husband likewise hurt his foot in an accident and has been unable to return to work since. As such, both of them have been experiencing hard times this past holiday season.

Fortunately, the next month appears to be much brighter, as they have been gifted with a free month of laundry at Busy Bubbles Laundromat in Winter Haven. Siara was entered into a contest, and was one of two individuals to receive the prize. The other lucky contestant was Dianne Montanez of Lakeland.

“I am super excited about that,” Siara said. “It is hard for me to wash out laundry in the tub…I really want to thank you all so much. It is all amazing.”

Stephanie Griggs Durden, owner of Busy Bubbles Laundromat, has always sought ways to give back to her community. This Christmas, she decided to give the gift of free laundry for one month to two lucky individuals at both her Winter Haven and Lakeland locations.

Recently, the laundromat fell into hard times after being robbed multiple times at both locations. The laundromat was first robbed in November at their Lakeland location, and then several weeks later in December at their Winter Haven location.

While the culprits did not steal a lot of money, they did create a lot of damage at the Winter Haven location, breaking the change machine and tearing up the back wall, Stephanie said. One person involved has already been arrested, but the other culprits are still being sought after, Stephanie said.

Since then, Stephanie has tried to fix the damage to her store. Her insurance has since helped cover the cost to most of the damages, but the whole ordeal has left her low on funds, she said.

Nevertheless, even in spite of being the target of crime and financial difficulty, the laundromat was still able to give back to its local community by offering one month of free laundry to two local in need.

“We always try to help some family in need each Christmas,” Stephanie said. “This is a way we can give back without it hurting us more financially. It can be a blessing to somebody.”

Busy Bubble Laundromat first opened in Winter Haven eight years ago. Their Lakeland location opened two years ago. During that time, Stephanie has always sought ways to give back to her local community. At least one week every year, they offer a week of free laundry to the local homeless.

Currently, the laundromat is seeking donations of laundry detergent and fabric softener that can be used by the winners of the one month of free laundry, as well as by other people who need it most.

“We are trying to help anyone that we can help out,” Stephanie said.

Busy Bubble Laundromat is located at 3397 Cypress Gardens Rd, Winter Haven, FL 33884, and at 1617 E Edgewood Dr, Lakeland, FL 33803. For more information, call 863-206-8572.

Individual Steals Bikini Bottoms and Binoculars From West Marine

Release by Winter Haven Police Department

Bikini Bottoms and Binoculars. There’s a song in there somewhere!
The guy in the video and photo entered West Marine on 12/30/19 and decided he really loved those bikini bottoms. Must not have had the money for them. He also decided the binoculars couldn’t be passed up either.
Walked right out without even giving consideration of paying! (Okay, we really can’t say he didn’t give consideration, but he didn’t go to the counter nor did he look in his wallet for money, nor did he… you get the point.)
If you know who he is, call Heartland Crime Stoppers at 1-800-226-TIPS (8477). Callers are guaranteed anonymity and could be eligible for a CASH reward

Driver Succumed to His Injuries Day After Single Vehicle Crash in Lakeland

0

On December 25, 2019, around 7:50 a.m., PCSO units responded to a single-vehicle crash on Gibsonia Galloway Road at Chiles Lane in Lakeland. The driver of the silver 2014 Mazda four-door car, 61-year-old Benjamin Norman of Lakeland, was extracted from his car and transported to LRHMC with serious injuries. It appears he was westbound on Gibsonia Galloway Road when, for unknown reasons, he lost control of the Mazda and crashed into a metal utility pole on the south side of the roadway. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Deputies made contact with hospital staff that afternoon and were told he was in stable condition following surgery and was expected to survive.

On December 26, 2019, PCSO received notification from the Medical Examiner that Norman succumbed to his injuries at LRHMC and an autopsy was being conducted. While his cause and manner of death are pending toxicology, he did have injuries consistent with blunt force trauma from a vehicle crash.

The investigation is ongoing, and no charges are pending.

Grove Roots Celebrates Third Annual Christmas Party

Grove Roots Celebrates Third Annual Christmas Party

by James Coulter

There’s no place like home for the holidays. For many Winter Haven residents, Grove Roots is almost like a second home to them. Last Saturday, they celebrated being home at their second home for the holidays during its annual Christmas party.

Craft beer, food trucks, and live music could be enjoyed at the Third Annual Grove Roots Christmas Party on Saturday evening. From 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., patrons could enjoy the musical stylings of the “Smith Family Special” featuring Winter Haven’s own Hunter, Sarah-Claire & Squire Smith!

As always, they could also enjoy a good meal with good drinks by partaking of the food trucks outside and the craft beer being served inside. The packing house was especially packed that evening, as there was a slight drizzle followed by rain that evening.

For the past three years, Grove Roots has served as the unofficial backyard of Downtown Winter Haven, drawing in locals of all ages to play upon the open lawn, enjoy fresh food from the food trucks, and drink their fill of specialty craft beer brewed fresh at the brewery.

The local community especially comes together during major holidays for their annual holiday celebrations, from their Spooktacular Halloween Party to their Beer Thankful Thanksgiving Eve Party. Grove Roots will also be open on Christmas Eve until 8 p.m. Until then, their holiday festivities have concluded for the year with New Year’s around the corner.

Morgan Wilson, Director of Marketing, enjoys how the event not only draws people into their facility, but also draws people together from across the community for good times and good drinks, regardless of their age—though only those of drinking age can enjoy the good drinks, of course!

“So we are very happy for the turnout thus far,” she said. “It brings everyone together, everyone comes home for the holiday, and we get to see people we have not seen all year.”

Fire Truck Dedicated At Lake Wales Museum Christmas Party

Fire Truck Dedicated At Lake Wales Museum Christmas Party

by James Coulter

When most people think of Christmas and the color red, they think of Santa Claus pulling his red sleigh. Something equally red appeared at the Lake Wales History Museum last week, but it wasn’t Santa Claus’ sleigh: it was an old fire truck.

The museum dedicated an old fire truck donated to them by the Lake Wales Fire Department during their Christmas Party last Thursday evening. The truck was used by the department since 1984, and had since been given to the museum after a new state-of-the-art fire truck replaced it.

Museum Director Jennifer D’hollander presented the staff of the fire department with a certificate congratulating them for the donation. The certificate contained words from a plaque that was being created and which would be displayed upon the truck.

The Lake Wales Fire Department started in the early 1900s. Having been around for nearly 100 years, the department has a rich history behind it, and the old fire truck helps to tell that history at the museum, Jennifer D’hollander said.

“We are delighted and honored, and we couldn’t be happier that we were able to work with the fire department and have them donate this to us so we can have this for years to come,” she said.

For Assistant Fire Chief Perry Daughtry, the truck especially has significance for him, since it was one of the very first that he ever drove since he first started his career in 1990.

He has driven it many times and used it to fight countless fires. Now he’s slightly sad to no longer see it at the station. At least now he knows that it is in good hands, and that its story will be shared through the museum, he said.

“I think it is a great idea,” Daughtry said. “They will take care of it and maintain it. And then I can show my grandkids what I used to drive. I fought a lot of fires in it, and I can almost remember one of them.”

Aside from dedicating the old fire truck, the party that evening also honored the late Mimi Hardman, the former museum director who recently passed away, and whose contributions helped shape the museum to what it is today.

Ever since she helped open the museum on July 4, 1976, Hardman has overseen the museum for nearly 40 years, and served as president of the Lake Wales Historical Society from 1986 to 2015. Her service drew in millions in historic grants to the city for historic preservation, especially of buildings such as the high school complex, according to the Lake Wales News.

“Hardman’s community service led to her selection as Lake Wales Citizen of the Year in 1977,” the Lake Wales News reported. “She also won numerous other accolades over the years, including a Historic Preservation Award for Individual Achievement in 1999 from the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation. In 2000 she was named by the Lakeland Ledger as one of the most influential persons in Polk County for the 20th Century.”

The Lake Wales History Museum hopes to preserve the legacy of this most influential woman who helped preserve it and the rich history of the city by kicking off a fundraising campaign to fund a new collections and resource center to be named in her honor, Jennifer D’hollander said.

“Because of all her hard work that she did to save the buildings and all of the Lake Wales historical items…it seemed poignant that we raise funds that we take care of all of the things that she wanted to preserve for Lake Wales, and that is her legacy that we can continue on,” she said.

Santa Visits Haines City Fire Department For Fourth Year

Santa Visits Haines City Fire Department For Fourth Year

by James Coulter

The children of Haines City were sure to better not shout, better not cry, and better not pout, because for the fourth consecutive year, they were visited by Santa Claus coming to their town.

On Saturday evening, the Haines City Fire Department hosted its fourth annual Santa at the Station. True to its name, both Santa and Mrs. Claus dropped by the station to visit all of the good children that lived within the city.

All of the good little boys and girls lined up outside of the station to meet Jolly Old Saint Nicholas himself for an opportunity to tell them their wishes and take a photograph with him.

Before and after, they could enjoy several fun activities within the station, including filling in coloring book pages, eating cookies, and drinking hot chocolate. They could also meet the local firefighters and take a look at one of the fire engines.

“The kids love to see trucks and fire fighters,” Holly Gorsline, Executive Assistant for the Haines City Fire Department. “Santa being here is always the best part for them.”

The fire department has hosted several local community events. In October, they hosted an open house, allowing local residents an opportunity to visit the station.

Their new fire chief, Jeffery Davidson, since obtaining his position last year, has been more than eager to engage the local community through events and outreaches such as this.

“So he is really big for doing things in the community,” Gorsline said. “We have been doing this for four years. The community, every year, appears to grow and grow. More and more people come out every year. We love to see more people at the station. The kids get to see Santa. I enjoy just seeing the community come out and see all of the kids and have everybody here.”

Haines City Mayor Morris West commented how events such as this and the parade hosted the following evening help bring the community together to celebrate the holidays. He hopes that such events will continue to grow.

“I hope we can continue to do this every year just to give back to the community, and that is what we are all about: giving back to our community,” he said. “Because they are community involved, that is what I appreciate. I think that we at the city we are very elated to have something like this that brings Santa…and bring back the annual Christmas parade.”
