“It is a local event geared towards more local people,” he said. “It is more geared toward people who want a more intimate experience than waiting in a line all day.”

His favorite part is being able to meet many artists with the row of vendors known as “artist’s alley.” To be able to see so many people with a love and passion that he shares makes hosting the event worthwhile.

Winter Haven Police are Asking for Help Identifying Two Suspects Who Distracted Clerk In Order to Change Amount on Pre-Paid Card

0

Winter Haven Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying two males who distracted a clerk in order to access the register to change an amount on a pre-paid card.

On Jan. 4, 2020 at approximately 6 p.m., two males entered Family Dollar, located at 206 Martin Luther King Blvd. in Winter Haven. The pair walked around the store selecting miscellaneous items to include a Vanilla Visa pre-paid gift card. During the check-out procedure, the clerk needed to have an approval from a manager for the card. While attempting to locate the manager, one of the suspects leans over the counter and looks at the register screen, however does not make any changes. The manager comes over and enters information allowing the gift card to be purchased.

As soon as the manager walks away, the second subject distracts the clerk by asking for something that is behind the counter. As the clerk is distracted, the other suspect leans over and makes a change to the gift card to the amount of $500 and then proceeds to “cash out” the sale, which causes the drawer to pop open.

The clerk returns and appears to be perplexed at the drawer being opened. The pair pay for a small item with cash and then leave with the items from the original sale and the gift card.

It is believed this is not the first time this pair has done this.

Anyone who recognizes either of these suspects is asked to call Heartland Crime Stoppers at 1-800-226-TIPS (8477). Callers are guaranteed anonymity and could be eligible for a CASH reward.

Hacienda Celebrates 10 Years Of Serving Authentic Mexican Food In Bartow

Hacienda Celebrates 10 Years Of Serving Authentic Mexican Food In Bartow

by James Coulter

Maria Ochoa and her sister, Carolina Arredondo, opened Hacienda Mexico Restaurante in Bartow 10 years ago. Since then, their resturant has continued to serve locals with Mexican food as authentic as actual food served in Mexico.

The two sisters received plenty of experience working for other Mexican resturaunts, and the food they serve on a regular basis, from the tacos and burritos, to the enchiladas and quesadillas, proves that. Since opening their eatery a decade ago, their food has gained a reputation of bringing the flavor of Mexico to Downtown Bartow.

Everything is made fresh, including the complimentary chip and salsa served to every customer upon entering. No corners are cut. Everything is made to order with only the freshest ingredients, ensuing flavor authentic to Mexican cooking.

“Hacienda is noteworthy for its delicate flavors and sauces that are light and fresh, as in a dish of plump, grilled shrimp and tidbits of tender beef, presented with a sauté of mushrooms and onions floating in a thin sauce brightened with a kiss of tomato,” a review from The Ledger explained.

Last Saturday, Maria and her sister celebrated a decade of being in business with Hacienda Mexico Restaurante during their anniversary celebration on Saturday. During the special occasion, both sisters and a few of their other relatives staff members dressed in decorative Mexican attire.

When asked how their business has thrived within the past decade, Maria had only one obvious answer: her customers. By providing only the best customer service to both regulars and newcomers, she has ensured that anyone who comes to her eatery wants to come again, she said.

“That is one of our big things,” she said. “We try to make our customers happy. And we try to please them and make sure that when they come in, they enjoy their food. If there is something wrong, we try to fix it. And try our very best to let them leave happy.”

Maria herself loves interacting with the customers. She loves nothing more than being able to meet them and strike up a chat with them, seeing how they are enjoying their meal and asking how their meal can be improved. Such personable customer service has kept them going for the past decade, and she expects it to allow her continue going for another.

Her sister, Carolina, likewise agreed. She started with her sister as a server and has since become a co-owner with her. She also loves being able to interact with the customers and see how well their meal is going.

“I would say that we try to help people the best that we can,” she said. “We do our best. All our cooking is homemade, made here, and to order. We try to make everybody happy.”

Maria and her sister opened the eatery on Jan. 4, 2010. They were inspired to open it after Maria’s husband opened a similar eatery in Winter Haven.

Since then, Hacienda has thrived to the point where a potential expansion is upon the horizon, perhaps even in the form of a second location in a different city. Until then, Maria expects to continue serving authentic homemade Mexican food for another ten years and counting.

“If they want really good Mexican authentic food, we cook for their pleasing,” she said. “I would like to thank everybody. Thank you for keeping us here these ten years. We are very happy to be here.”

Hacienda Mexico Restaurante is located at 195 E. Main St., Bartow. For more information, call 863-533-7600.

The witnesses administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation to Ms. Hillman until Polk County Fire/Medics arrived on scene. Polk County Fire/Medics took over lifesaving measures on Ms. Hillman and transported her to Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center where she succumbed to her injuries.  Polk County Fire/Medics rendered aid to Ms. Keeli Gonzalez—she was transported to Lakeland Regional Health and is listed in stable condition.

Highway 17 92 is a primarily east/west four lane roadway with two lanes that travel east and two lanes that travel west with a 60 mph speed limit. The crash occurred in the inside (left) lane of eastbound Highway 17 92. The area of Highway 17 92 where the crash occurred is straight. It was dark at the time of the crash and the area of the crash is not illuminated with any artificial lighting.

Preliminary investigation suggests, that Ms. Hillman driving the Buick Regal was traveling the wrong direction on Highway 17 92. The Buick Regal was traveling westbound in the inside lane of eastbound Highway 17 92 with no headlights on. Ms. Gonzalez, driving the Ford Focus was traveling eastbound in the inside lane of Highway 17 92. The front of the Ford Focus struck the front of the Buick Regal. After primary impact both vehicles rotated approximately 45 degrees counter clockwise. The Buick Regal and the Ford Focus came to final rest in the inside (left) lane of the roadway. There were no signs of any pre-impact braking from either vehicle

Witnesses on scene were interviewed and advised they observed the Buick Regal traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of Highway 17 92 prior to the crash. Witnesses advised the Buick Regal was traveling the wrong direction on Highway 17 92 without any headlights activated. A witness traveling behind the Ford Focus advised she didn’t observe the Buick Regal, due to the area being dark but suddenly observed the Ford Focus and Buick Regal impact each other.

Preliminary investigation further revealed that Tammi Hillman was not wearing a seatbelt; Keeli Gonzalez was wearing her seatbelt.  Front airbags in both of the involved vehicles were deployed during this crash. According to investigators, Keeli Gonzalez was evaluated and did not exhibit any signs of impairment. The causation, other than the obvious wrong-way driving aspect, for this crash is under investigation.

Enterprise Insight of the top Ten Cyber Security Initiatives for 2020

Enterprise Insight of the top Ten Cyber Security Initiatives for 2020

10. Anti Virus or Application Whitelist Technologies. While Anti-Virus tools are affective against known signature threats the industry is struggling to keep up with ever evolving virus and malware threats. Application whitelisting or micro using various layers of security is the best way to protect your environment. For application white listing you can use tools like Carbon Black, Cylance, or Sentinal One. For micro segmentation of networks you can utilize tools such as Cisco ACI, Tempered Networks, or Dark Trace. While none of these solutions are perfect all the vendors listed have great solutions that can add layers into your Cyber Security Stack. The key is to avoid paralysis by analysis and pick a solution and move forward with implementation. Doing something is better than doing nothing.
9. Cyber Range – Just like the military, local law enforcement, or personal protection services the people providing these levels of service vary drastically. The personal protection services are typically basic security people. Really just tasked with checking name badges. The police have some more skilled training but have to juggle many other duties while protecting and serving. This leaves us to military level security people who are highly trained individuals who are ready at a moment’s notice to fulfill a mission with very high precision and effectiveness.
What level should your security team be up to? Well that’s a decision the business must make and support. For some it is simply the act of checking off the box. For others its wanting to maintain basic knowledge in house to provide best effort solutions. Then you have the high twitch Cyber Security Professionals who are using Cyber Security Technologies to not just protect but actively defend the business from real world Cyber Threats. Typically, this group is aware of what is happening in the Cyber World and has intimate knowledge of steps that should be taken to defend, remediate, and recover should a Cyber Security event occur at their organization. I can tell you even the largest of Fortune 500 organizations struggle with what level of support they want in-house. More often than not they demand Porter-House Steak level Cyber Security support when in reality they are only checking off the boxes and supporting their staff on Super Sized Value Meal Cheese Burger budgets.
8. According to Microsoft over 44 million weak passwords or already compromised accounts are actively in use on the Microsoft Cloud or Azure Active Directory Environment. Many users use the same email address and passwords for multiple sites. I have seen cases where a high valued asset at a large corporation used their corporate email address and password for an online forum. This is not an uncommon practice among many users. Surfing the dark web you can find gigs of user credentials. Whether or not they’re still valid is up to the user disseminating and using the data.
7. Multi-Factor Authentication. According to Microsoft over 99 of automated Cyber Attacks are thwarted by the use of multi-factor requirements. The right type of Multi-Factor authentication can make it almost impossible for a Cyber Attacker to gain access into your system. There are many solutions that will allow you to enable multi-factor in your environment. The first couple that come to mind for securing Active Directory is Azure Multi Factor Authentication and Duo Multi Factor. A great personal multi-factor tool and one that I use daily is Authy. Start with your Active Directory God accounts and then move to IT, Executive Staff, then to the general users. This will have the largest impact and help support the case as you move through the business units.
6. TitanFox and C2. This is malware that may perform many malicious tasks, such as downloading and executing additional malware, receive commands from a central command and control server, update or delete itself, steal login and password information, logg keystrokes, participating in a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, or locking and encrypting the contents of your computer and demanding payment for its safe return. The malware dropper even has some anti-AV logic built in that allows it to go undetected by Anti-Virus Products. The dropper is typically delivered in a Microsoft Word macro script but has been seen in other documents as well.
5. Artificial Intelligence (AI). Not only is AI useful for Cyber Security Experts but it also is very useful to Cyber Crime Organizations. Cyber Criminals are utilizing AI data collection to learn user habits to maximize the potential effectiveness of a launching a phishing email or malware to setup camp on a victim’s pc. Once the malware is planted the Cyber Attacker will again use AI to determine the best options to self-propagate malware and determine the maximum impact and timing to launch an attack.
4. DNS over HTTPS. It has been known for some time that most Malware depends on DNS to successfully execute its code. Many organizations have recognized this and setup DNS systems or subscribed to services that are designed to prevent a malicious DNC call out. However, Cyber Attackers have caught on to these tricks and are now using DNS over SSL. Essentially connecting to a secure web connection and transferring DNS requests over a secure connection.
This type of SSL connection is very similar to the type of connection you make when you login in to your bank account from a web browser. The data between your pc and the bank is shared over a private secure tunnel that only you and the Bank can decipher.
Is it really that secure? I can share with you there are tools used by organizations to decipher SSL encryption. The purpose of SSL decryption is to do a deeper inspection of the traffic passing through the environment to ensure any malicious code is not making it through the front gate. Top malware communicators are DNS, TCP, SSL, HTTP, and SMB
3. Insights. Phishing is the source of more than 95% of all Cyber Security Breaches in 2019. Phishing attacks are expected to more than double in 2020 and include email spoofing. These type of attacks will be the reason for an increase in ransomware attacks and business operation disruptions going into 2020.
2. The use of cloud technologies has further complicated matters from a Cyber Security perspective. While there are operational efficiencies to be gained from moving to the cloud there are also new Cyber Security risks associated with the cloud that business cannot overlook. A business’ cloud environment should be treated the same as a new physical data center would be treated.
1. The key to combating any type of cyber-attack is to build a system that gives you visibility into your environment. The utilization of a SIEM system is the best tool to collect these type of logs. Implementation of a SIEM will build insight into your environment to help identify what cyber threats are actively hitting your business. More often than not just collecting this data and reporting the facts have allowed businesses to ensure they are spending their Cyber Security budget in the right areas and make better security driven decisions. A primary example, I have seen business dump millions of dollars into new firewall technologies thinking this was going to have the biggest impact on their Cyber Threat Surface, however, after analyzing data it was discovered that integrating Multi-Factor Authentication was the immediate need as their systems were being access daily from legitimate accounts that were compromised from the web.
This does not mean firewalls are not important. It just meant that in their current environment the primary Cyber Attack vector was something they did not even consider. They did not consider account compromise because the business was not even aware the attacks were taking place. The old adage is you cannot protect what you do not know and knowing what needs to be protected is only half the battle….
As I report more on Cyber Security moving into 2020 I will dig into each one of these items and provide some insight into each area.
If you or your business has Cyber Security related questions or need help implementing any of these technologies, please feel free to reach out. I’ll be glad to schedule some time with you to talk about your business needs and help you develop a strategic plan to reduce your overall Cyber Security attack surface. One Driver Transport with Non-Life Threatening Injures in This Morning Crahs on SR60 and 9th St in Lake Wales

On January 6, 2020 at 5:30am officers from the Lake Wales Police Department were dispatched to a traffic crash at the intersection of SR60 and 9th St. Once on scene officers learned Reginald Mungin, a 49 year old Tampa resident, was traveling westbound on SR60 in a 2000 Freightliner. Miguel Rodriguez, a 77 year old Lake Wales resident, was attempting to make a left turn off 9th St to travel eastbound on SR60 in a 2013 Mitsubishi sedan. When Rodriguez entered SR60 he did so in the path of Mungin. Mungin attempted to make evasive moves to avoid a collision but Rodriguez had pulled too far into his path. As a result of the impact Rodriguez sustained non-life threatening injuries and was airlifted for medical treatment. Mungin did not sustain any injuries.

The collision created a large debris field as well as disabling both vehicles. Traffic on SR60 was rerouted for approximately 4 hours. Non-criminal charges are pending in this investigation. Anyone who witnessed this crash is asked to contact Traffic Officer Sean Robertson at (863) 678-4223 extension 548.

AdventHealth Field House Celebrates Grand Opening

AdventHealth Field House Celebrates Grand Opening

by James Coulter

Winter Haven became even more magical now that the AdventHealth Field House, the practice facility for the Lakeland Magic basketball team, celebrated its grand opening on Saturday.

The $25 million indoor athletic facility includes a 58,400-square-foot gymnasium with six basketball courts and 12 volleyball courts, a second-floor observation area with a track, and a fitness center.

Also included is an indoor bridge connecting the new facility to the previously existing facility containing Theatre Winter Haven and the Ridge Art Association, which has also received renovations.

The new facility will serve as the training grounds for the Lakeland Magic, which has been hosting games at the Lakeland RP Funding Center for the past three years.

The grand opening celebration was hosted within the new gymnasium. Rather than dedicating it with a traditional ribbon-cutting, the facility was instead dedicated with a basketball tip-off between Winter Haven Mayor Brad Dantzler and Lakeland Magic CEO Alex Martins.

Martins boasted about how the new facility will be able to better help accommodate the Lakeland Magic, the local affiliate of the Orlando Magic basketball team. Serving as the home basketball team for the past three years, having reached the playoffs in their first two seasons.

The new facility will serve as their practice facility, as well as a venue for several team events. Helping them create the facility was their partnership with AdventHealth as part of its overall mission for personal care.

“Thank you for the city of Winter Haven and to Polk County for your vision to bring this facility here, to benefit all the citizens of these communities,” he said. “We are happy to be a small part of the memories that will take place here in the Advent Fieldhouse.”

Mayor Dantzler and Pro Tem Mayor Nathanial Birdsong both offered their thoughts on the new facility. Birdsong himself saw it as an extension of Winter Haven’s growth since its establishment in the early 20th Century.

Located at the intersection of Cypress Gardens Boulevard and US Highway 17, the field house will offer visitors entering the city a good first impression of what they can come to expect from the community.

“This space represents the Winter Haven lifestyle which includes leisure activity, recreation, athletics…and entertainment,” he said. “Today we open our doors and invite you to explore this new and improved location meant to accommodate the needs of our community for an enriched lifestyle. This project represents an important investment in the residents of Winter Haven and the future of our city. It is my pleasure to participate in this celebration to open another iconic Winter Haven attribute that will impact our community for many years to come.”

The AdventHealth Fieldhouse, aside from serving as the practice facility for Lakeland Magic, will also host other athletic events in the near future, with more than 40 events already scheduled this year by Polk County Sports Marketing, explained Martha Santiago, Polk County Commissioner of District 4.

Santiago expects the new facility to open new doors for both the city and the county, as the many events that will be hosted there will draw in tourists and potential residents, which will likewise draw in money to local businesses. The facility is already expected to create a projected economic impact of more than $22 million into the local economy, she said.

“Sports tourism imports funds that could be dispersed into other cities and county here into this city and county,” she said. “This new money will turn to more jobs and continue to grow our economy. Tourism remains one of Polk County most powerful economic engines, and if this field house proves, a dynamic driver of development.”

The new facility also contains a fitness area, which local residents can visit with annual memberships. The costs are $100 per year for individual residents, $200 for resident families, and $400 for non-resident families.

The AdventHealth Fieldhouse is located within the Chain of Lakes Complex, located at 210 Cypress Gardens Blvd, Winter Haven, FL 33880. For more information, visit the Winter Haven Parks and Recreation website at: https://www.mywinterhaven.com/parks-and-recreation/

Gaskins Barbecue & Lobster Brings The Taste Of Maine To Florida

Gaskins Barbecue & Lobster Brings The Taste Of Maine To Florida

by James Coulter

Do you like barbecue? Do you like seafood? Can’t decide which one you’d prefer? Why not both? A new Winter Haven eatery allows you to enjoy both.

Gaskins Barbecue & Lobster at Winter Haven does something that most people consider unimaginable, if not impossible: uniting the North and South. This new eatery serves the best of Maine seafood and lobster as well as good, old-fashioned Southern barbecue.

Whether you’d prefer a smoked lobster roll prepared from seafood freshly-delivered from the waters of Maine, or fall-off-the-bone ribs and brisket smoked over oak wood for up to 16 hours, Gaskins has the food your taste buds desire for lunch and dinner.

Their smoked lobster roll is highly recommended for anyone who has ever desired lobster from Maine without having to travel thousands of miles up north. Barbecue lovers will love the Krazy Karolina sandwich with pulled pork topped with sweet sauce and coleslaw on a bun. Either way, their seafood and barbecue offer the best of both worlds.

“We are featuring New York-style seafood, along with barbecue, and it seems like a good combo,” said Jeane Gaskins, who co-owns the eatery with her husband, John. “There’s a lot of people who really like barbecue but who do not like seafood and vice versa. So we are getting a mix then.”

This is the second location for their restaurant. Their first one is located in York Beach, Maine. They had been running the original location for the past three years, and have since sought a second location in Florida.

Gaskins herself is originally from Haines City. She considered it a no-brainer to open their new location in Winter Haven, as it’s one of the busier cities within the county. It’s the same city where her children go to school and where they shop, she said.

Previously, they lived in Brevard County while her husband was in the military. Afterward, they opened up several eateries before moving up north and opening the original Gaskins.

Originally, their eatery was going to serve barbecue. Upon learning of the high demand for lobster, they decided to offer lobster meals such as smoked lobster rolls. Both the lobster and barbecue proved popular, and their restaurant has been thriving three years since, she said.

Since opening their Winter Haven location nearly a month ago, business has done exceptionally well. What has allowed their business to remain as successful, either in Maine or Florida, has been their fresh seafood. Their new location receives shipments three to four shipments per week.

Whether you want lobster or barbecue, Gaskins will gladly serve you either or both. Either way, new customers can expect something quite unique that they can’t find anywhere else, and thus will have them coming back for more.

“There [are] not really any lobster rolls anywhere around here. They are either in Orlando or Melbourne, so it is bringing a little bit of New England down to Winter Haven,” Gaskins said. “There are a lot of barbecue places, but we do a twist on different barbecue items, if you always wanted to go to New England and have a lobster roll, you can have that exactly down here. We do ours exactly as they do it up in New England.”

Gaskins Barbecue & Lobster is located at 600 Cypress Gardens Blvd, Winter Haven, FL 33880. For more information, visit https://gaskinsbarbecue.com, or call 863-656-1605.
