Lake Silver in Winter Haven will Host Special Olympics Area 8 Stand Up Paddle Boarding Competition

Lake Silver in Winter Haven will host the Special Olympics Area 8 Stand Up Paddle Boarding Competition on July 9th. The competition will feature 15-20 Polk and Hillsborough County Special Olympic Florida athletes in a series of races on Lake Silver at MLK Park.

The popularity of the modern sport of Stand Up Paddle Surfing or Paddle Boarding as it is commonly referred to; is said to have originated in the Hawaiian Islands.

Back in the 1920s to the 1950s ; the Beach Boys of Waikiki, a renowned group of Hawaiian watermen who worked on the beaches of Waikiki, would stand on their long boards and paddle out with outrigger paddles when the waves died down so they could take pictures of the tourists that were learning to surf.

Stand Up Paddle boarding is believed to be one of the most popular outdoor activities among first-time participants. So come out and cheer for the athletes as they have fun and compete.

MLK Park is located at 199 Lake Silver Dr. in Winter Haven

Legendary Giant Squid “Kracken” Spotted Off Coast Of Antarctica

Nordic folklore speaks of a massive creature that haunted the icy seas of the North Sea, where it attacked passing vessels with gigantic tentacles.

And conspiracy theorists claims to have spotted this mythical Kraken swimming off the coast of Deception Island near Antarctica.

Using Google Earth, this sea monster appears to be 120m from head to end, with ‘the mid area of a giant squid’.

While some on the internet think it is proof of the existence of the legendary “Kraken” – a giant squid or octopus that attacks whales and ships – others have suggested it might be a boat or a rock formation.

Check out the video for yourself.

THE LEGEND OF THE KRAKEN

The Kraken would snag ships with it long, very strong tentacles

The Kraken would snag ships with it long, very strong tentacles

According to Nordic folklore, the Kraken haunted the seas from Norway through Iceland and all the way to Greenland.

This massive creature would snag ships with its long, very strong tentacles and drag them deep into the ocean – never to be heard from again.

Some sources say it would have been at least 100 feet long and could be mistaken for an island.

The history of this mythical monster dates back to 1180 to Kind Sverre of Norway and sightings have been reported since.

And like most legends the legend of the Kraken started with sightings of a real giant squid, but over time it blew up into a gigantic man eating beast.

The giant squid can reach 18 meters in length and has been rarely seen by humans as it lives in very deep waters.

More than 150 students, employees and community leaders gathered at Polk State’s Lakeland and Winter Haven campuses on Monday to honor the victims of last week’s Orlando nightclub shooting.

“Those of us in education believe more than anything that when you can educate people and explain things to them, tolerance of many types of diversity becomes a way of life … Judging and hatred and violence are never the ways to anything. Acceptance, tolerance, patience and understanding of different lifestyles will make this world a better place.”

Congresswoman Wants To Drug Test The Rich – Introduces The “Top 1% Accountability Act of 2016.”

From NPR NEWS

The richest Americans take heavy advantage of the tax code’s many deductions. So Rep. Gwen Moore has an idea: She wants rich Americans to get drug-tested before they can get those tax benefits.

The Wisconsin Democrat is introducing the “Top 1% Accountability Act of 2016.” Its goal: require “drug testing for all tax filers claiming itemized deductions in any year over $150,000,” her office said in a press release.

Moore made it clear the bill is intended not so much as a statement about the rich but about the poor (the bill has little chance of actually going anywhere in a Republican-controlled House).

“It is my sincere hope that my bill will help eradicate the stigma associated with poverty and engage the American public in a substantive dialogue regarding the struggles of working- and middle-class families,” she said in the release.
