One Person Killed In Lake Wales Crash That Blocked Hwy 27 For Hours
Lake Wales, Florida – The PCSO Traffic Unit investigated a serious crash in Lake Wales earlier today that resulted in a fatality.
Around 2:00 p.m. on Tues, Nov 29th, a 2009 Chevy Malibu being driven by 78-year-old Joan Swift of Leyland Cypress Way in Winter Haven, with her 81-year-old husband, Harry Swift as her passenger, was heading southbound on US Hwy 27 and entered the turn lane in the median at the intersection of 1st Avenue North to turn east onto 1st Avenue, when it then entered into the northbound lane of US Hwy 27 and into the path of a Peterbuilt semi tractor-trailer that was traveling northbound. The semi struck the passenger side of the Chevy Malibu, critically injuring Harry Swift, who was airlifted to LRHMC, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Joan Swift was also airlifted, and remains in critical but stable condition.
The driver of the semi was not injured. The semi struck a 2004 Ford van after colliding with the Chevy Malibu, which was occupied by 64-year-old Jose Navarro of Babson Park (driver), and his passenger, 47-year-old Denise Gonzalez of Babson Park. The van was also heading northbound. Neither of the van’s occupants were injured.
All of the drivers and occupants of all three vehicles were wearing their seatbelts. The investigation is ongoing.
One Person Killed In Polk County Crash
Mulberry, Florida – PCSO Traffic Unit is investigating a two-vehicle crash in Mulberry, involving one fatality.
Around 2:50 p.m. this afternoon (Tues, Nov 29th) a white passenger vehicle traveling westbound on CR 630 impacted with a semi tractor-trailer that was traveling northbound on SR 37, in the intersection. The lone occupant of the passenger vehicle – an adult – is deceased. We have not yet positively identified the victim.
The semi driver is not injured.
The intersection is still shut down in that area, and deputies are re-routing traffic.
Polk County Couple Arrested & Charged With Lewd Battery & Lewd Molestation
Lakeland, Florida – On 11/18/2016 deputies with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office arrested Olan Terry Simone Jr. 43 & April Niemiec 31, both of Lakeland, on charges of Lewd Battery, Lewd Molestation & contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The incident allegedly occurred in August of 2016.
According to reports a 15 year old girl was plied with alcohol and subjected to fondling and sex by both Simone and Niemiec (threesome). The teen was temporarily in the custody of Simone at the time. According to an arrest affidavit the victims mother contacted Polk County Deputies after learning of the incident from Niemiec. During a two recorded conversation on 11/17/2016 both Simone & Niemiec allegedly admitted to fondling the teen and having sex with the teen. The incident allegedly took place at the couples home on Citrus Drive in Lakeland.
On 11/18/2016 allegedly post Miranda Simone admitted to having penile – vaginal intercourse with the teen and Niemiec admitted to having oral sex & digital vaginal penetration with the teen. Both suspects were arrested and transported to Polk County Jail.

- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
- In a large bowl, mix beef, pork, veal, salt, pepper, eggs, onion and heavy cream. With moistened hands, shape the mixture into 1 inch balls. Roll the balls in the bread crumbs until all balls are well coated. Arrange in a single layer on a large, shallow baking sheet.
- Melt 1/2 cup butter in a large saucepan over low heat. Stir in the flour. Gradually stir in the chicken broth. Continue stirring until thickened and bubbly, then blend in the sour cream and fresh dill.
- Melt remaining butter in a small saucepan, and drizzle over the meatballs. Bake meatballs in the preheated oven 35 minutes, turning occasionally, until evenly browned.
- Place meatballs in a chafing dish and cover with the sauce to serve.
Shooting Death Of Winter Haven 14 Year Old Being Investigated
Winter Haven, Florida – Polk County Sheriff’s Detectives are investigating the death of a 14-year-old Winter Haven boy that occurred as a result of a gunshot wound.
Around 4:00 p.m. on Monday, November 28, 2016, PCSO Deputies and Auburndale Police responded to 2520 US Hwy 92 West, room number 9, in Winter Haven, AKA LakMar Resort Motel, in reference to a teenager who had been shot.
When first responders arrived on-scene, they found 14-year-old Kyler Daughtery (who lives in room number 8) deceased from a single gunshot wound. Also on-scene were 19-year-old Donovan Hoover (who lives in room number 9), and 16-year-old Dylan Prosser (who lives in room number 7).
According to the investigation so far, the young men went into a bedroom, where Donovan showed a 12-gauge shotgun to the them and then left the room. Shortly thereafter, Donovan heard Dylan say, “This is how you load a shotgun,” and then heard a gunshot. He ran back into the room to find Kyler had been shot. Nobody else was home at the time.
The shooting does not appear to be intentional at this point in time.
This is an ongoing death investigation. The PCSO Bureau of Criminal Investigations is conducting the death investigation. The Polk County Medical Examiner will conduct the autopsy to determine the manner and cause of death.
Lake Wales Female Store Associate Struck & Shoved But Still Helps Apprehend Thief
Lake Wales, Florida – On 11/23/2016 the Lake Wales Police were called to the FYE store in the Eagle Ridge Mall. A suspect had been apprehended by a store associate and some citizens after he robbed the safe in the store.
According to reports Zachery Dority (DOB: 12/17/1993 of Lake Wales) and Amber Carter (DOB: 7/9/1998 of Lake Wales) allegedly conspired together to rob Carters former employer. Carter allegedly would call the store associate with a ruse to give Dority a chance to get behind the counter. Around 12pm Carter began contacting store associate Tabatha Luna regarding some personal property that she had left at the store. Carter was sitting outside in her vehicle while contacting Luna. After several calls Luna finally agreed to look in the back of the store for the former assistant mangers personal property. When Luna went to the back room Dority allegedly went behind the counter and accessed the safe with a code, allegedly furnished by Carter. Luna however quickly came back to the counter and discovered Dority and confronted him. He then allegedly struck Luna and shoved her into a wall to make good with his escape. Luna however remained vigilant and with the assistance of citizen’s was able to tackle Dority until Mall security apprehended him.
Carter allegedly went into the mall and demanded that Dority be released as he did nothing wrong. An independent witness relayed information to police about Carter allegedly being involved and she was also taken into custody. Both suspects had vehicles on the private property and after they were officially trespassed from the property they were towed from the scene. Prior to being towed officers completed a custodial inventory of each vehicle as part of the towing process. Both vehicles allegedly had illegal narcotics and stolen property in them.
Both suspects were transported to Polk County Jail.
Man Steals Truck & Then Steals Bike Before Being Apprehended By Lake Wale Police K9
Lake Wales, Florida – According to the Lake Wales Police Department a man claiming to be homeless stole a pickup truck at a gas station, bailed out after police spotted him and then stole a bicycle before being apprehended by Lake Wales Police K9.
On 11/27/2016 at around 10:56pm a man had left his pickup running at the Citgo Gas station on Hwy27 while he ran inside for just a moment. At this time another man jumped into the truck and took off. A description of the man who stole the truck and a description of the truck were provided to LWPD. Shortly afterward a PCSO deputy spotted the truck. The deputy did not initially stop the truck, but followed the truck. The truck then turned off onto Macey Lane and then North behind the Denny’s restaurant & Tire Kingdom (4561 Macey Lane). At this time the man exited the truck and began running North through the woods towards Peddlers Pond. Deputies gave chase. Other deputies and officers arrived along with Lake Wales Police officer Dale Hampton and K9 officer Badge. A perimeter was set up and air support arrived.
Around 11:37pm officers received a call that a man fitting the suspects description was spotted riding a bike on 4866 Malibue Drive. Officer Hampton and Badge were able apprehend the suspect on Galaxy Drive. The suspect was taken to Lake Wales Medical Center for treatment before being released and taken to Polk County Jail.
The suspect was charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle, resisting without violence for fleeing deputies, no valid drivers license (doesn’t appear to have ever been issued one) and charged with burglary to occupied residence for stealing the bicycle while the home owners were home. Suspect advised he was homeless and was stealing the truck to have a place to sleep. The suspect has been identified as Dasmel Moore DOB 3/28/1998.

LAKE WALES – Lake Wales Medical Center is offering a free information session on the Health Insurance Marketplace on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 6 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
The information session will be held at Lake Wales Care Center’s Community Room, 140 E. Park Ave. Certified Assisters will be on-site to share information, answer questions, and to schedule free appointments for application assistance. In many cases, people are eligible for subsidies to help offset the cost of the insurance.
Open Enrollment opened Nov. 1 and continues through Jan. 31. This marks the federal government’s fourth annual campaign to extend healthcare coverage to more Americans, specifically to those who otherwise wouldn’t have access to services or who would face a financial crisis due to medical bills.
“We have helped hundreds of individuals enroll on the Marketplace since it first launched four years ago,” said Rebecca Brewer, CEO of Lake Wales Medical Center. “It’s very gratifying to help individuals enroll knowing they will be able to access healthcare when they need it. It’s a relief for so many people.”
Lake Wales Medical Center also is offering free one-on-one assistance throughout the Open Enrollment period at the hospital. Certified assisters will help with plan comparisons, determining any tax credits or discounts, and filling-out applications.
