Auburndale Police Department Arrests Suspect in November 4th Serious Injury Crash
At approximately 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 04, 2015, the Auburndale Police Department responded to a serious vehicle/bicycle crash in the 100 block of Adams Street, Auburndale, Florida. Officers arrived to find that 5-year-old Jasira Santos had been struck on her bicycle by a woman driving a green 1995 Jeep Cherokee, who was identified as Regina Shelton, W/F, 09/16/1980, who had been staying in the Winter Haven area. The on-scene investigation revealed that Shelton was seen by witnesses driving erratically northbound on Adams Street. The witnesses and the evidence at the scene revealed that Shelton left her lane of travel abruptly and crossed the southbound lane, where she then struck Santos and ran over her. Shelton then crashed into a large water supply line on the east end of a business on the west side of the road. Shelton put her vehicle in reverse and backed up in an attempt to leave the scene, but the rear wheels came to a stop against a wooden pole on the ground. A witness saw her trying to leave and was able to take the keys out of the ignition to prevent it. The ensuing investigation led to officers obtaining a blood sample from Shelton and that sample was analyzed at two laboratories. Analysis revealed the presence of methamphetamines in Shelton’s blood in sufficient amounts to impair her normal faculties. Auburndale investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Shelton charging her with one count of DUI with Serious Bodily Injury and one count of Leaving the Scene of a Crash with Serious Bodily Injury. Both charges are felonies. Shelton was located this morning at the Sunshine Motel on Hwy 17 in Winter Haven and was placed under arrest on the felony warrant. She is currently in the Polk County Jail on a no bond status.
