2nd Confirmed Rabies Case In Polk County

Lake Wales, Florida – The Polk County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Section confirmed today,  Thursday, June 9, 2016, the second positive Rabies case in Polk County for 2016.

On Tuesday, June 7, 2016, a Lakeland man reported that a fox attacked his dog in the area of 10523 Creekwood Court, Lakeland. The fox also bit the victim while he was trying to get it away from his dog. The victim was able to shoot and kill the fox.

The PCSO Animal Control Section responded, removed the body, and sent it to the state lab for rabies testing. The fox was confirmed positive for rabies by the State Laboratory on Thursday, June 9th.

The victim was notified of the test results and he has begun medical treatment; his dog will be quarantined for 45-180 days, depending on its vaccination history.

Residents are reminded that foxes are among the mammals considered to be high risk species or “rabies vector species” (RVS). Please do not approach any animal which is acting in an unusual or suspicious manner. If you think you or your pet has had an “exposure,” please contact the PCSO Animal Control Section at 863.499.2600.

Spook Hill Principal Eric Edwards

Lake Wales, Florida – The road has been a long and winding one for Spook Hill Principal Eric Edwards. He began his career with Polk County Public Schools in 1981 as a teacher at the Roosevelt school, which was only a sixth-grade center, in Lake Wales. Edwards also spent some as an elementary school principal in Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands for three years and then returned to the United States to teach at Hillcrest Elementary. Edwards was also the director of High Point Christian Academy in Lake Wales.

Edwards has spent the last 8 years as the principal of Spook Hill.

BARTOW, Fla. (June 8, 2016) – Polk County Fire Chief David Cash retired last week, having led a distinguished 43-year career and helping to form Polk County Fire Rescue into the modern organization that it is today.
 
Cash began as a volunteer firefighter with the City of Lake Wales in the early 1970s when Polk was still quite a rural county. He later joined the Polk County Fire District No. 2 as the county’s ninth firefighter and helped start the first HazMat Team.
 
Cash quickly climbed the ranks within the department, became the county’s first Emergency Management director and started the county’s first Emergency Operations Center. He also oversaw the approval and implementation of Polk’s first 800 MGhz radio system, along with the county’s addressing and 911 systems.
 
“I have truly been blessed,” Cash said upon his departure. “Through my career I have been fortunate to be a part of so many enriching and awarding experiences.  The greatest blessing though, comes from working with a vast number of caring, professional people and getting to know many of them as friends.
 
“As the old sheriff said in one of the Fievel movies from the early 90’s, ‘One man’s sunset is another man’s dawn,’ Cash continued. “The future is very bright for Polk County Fire Rescue. I am positive that the next chief will take the organization to even greater heights.”
 
A new chief will oversee about 600 employees and 45 stations. Polk County Fire Rescue responders are among the nation’s busiest. Ambulance services cover 100 percent of the county’s population, and fire coverage is for more than 60 percent of the population. In 2015, there were 75,280 ambulance incidents, 24,570 fire medical incidents and 5,617 other fire responses.

The Lake Wales Police Department is attempting to identify the suspects in these photographs. On June 2, 2016 at approximately 3:00pm the unknown female suspect entered Beall’s Outlet, located at 126 SR60 E. She selected and concealed several items in a large black purse and then exited the store without paying for the items. When she was stopped by Loss Prevention she resisted and was assisted by the white male suspect she referred to as “Austin”. They fled from the store in a black or dark colored SUV, possibly a Toyota.

It’s that time of year again! With summer at our doorstep and school almost out, it’s time to start making plans.

 

Typically most children will spend their time at the park, swimming pool or beach, and often in front of the TV playing video games for most of their vacation.  It also means they will spend less time engaged in valuable educational pursuits like reading, math and even problem solving skills.

 

The Public Education Partnership of Winter Haven and LRC of Polk County have partnered to offer three summer camps in Winter Haven which includes a Science camp, an Art & Music camp as well as a Sports and Fitness camp. All the camps will include a math and reading component as well in their curriculum.

 

The LRC website states “PEP Summer Camps offer elementary students a fun way to gain important skills in reading and math as well as sports & fitness, science and art & music. Camps will include hands-on, high-interest activities as well as interactive teaching. If you want your child to have fun while reviewing in order to prevent summer learning loss, then PEP Summer Camps are for you. Select 1-3 weeks, and choose from two Winter Haven locations. Space is limited; early registration is encouraged!”

 

Cost is $25.00 per week with Scholarships also available.

 

Available for school age children K-5 (Elementary)

 

There are two locations in Winter Haven.

 

Winter Haven PEP Center at 203 Avenue R NE and  Inwood Elementary School at 2200 Avenue G NW.

 

Camps run from June 13-30, Monday-Thursday, from 8:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m

If a Bear Comes into Your Yard

If a bear is in your yard, make sure that 1) you are in a safe area, and 2) the bear has a clear escape route, then 3) SCARE THAT BEAR Adobe PDF!

You want to let the bear know it is not welcome in your yard, so from a safe location, scare it away by yelling, banging pots and pans, using an air horn, or anything else that makes a lot of noise. The use of paintballs, bear spray, and sling shots are also allowed under FWC guidelines.  Once the bear leaves, take a look in your yard to ensure there is nothing that might be attracting the bear Adobe PDF.  If you see a bear is eating something on your property, take note of what it is and secure it once the bear leaves (Learn how at Living with Bears).

See our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) to get an idea of how to handle a bear in your yard or in the wild.

To keep bears away, make sure you follow this advice:

  • Secure household garbage in a shed, garage or a wildlife-resistant container (like abear-resistant container Adobe PDF or caddy Adobe PDF).
  • Put household garbage out on morning of pickup rather than the night before.
  • Secure commercial garbage in bear-resistant dumpsters.
  • Protect gardens, apiaries, compost and livestock with electric fencing.
  • Encourage your homeowners association or local government to institute ordinances on keeping foods that attract wildlife secure.
  • Feed pets indoors or bring in dishes after feeding.
  • Clean grills and store them in a locked, secure place.
  • Remove wildlife feeders or make them bear-resistant Adobe PDF.
  • Pick ripe fruit from trees and remove fallen fruit from the ground – bears love fruit!
  • Screened enclosures ARE NOT SECURE and WILL NOT keep bears out.

Making these changes around your home and encouraging your neighbors to do the same will discourage bears from associating your community with an easy food source. Remember – if your neighbors don’t become bear smart, too, the bear can tear up their yard…before coming for yours.

It is illegal to intentionally place food or garbage out that attracts bears and causes conflicts. Anything that attracts dogs, cats or raccoons will attract bears, too!
