Annual Havendale Christmas Parade brings Polk County together in Celebration

Annual Havendale Christmas Parade brings Polk County together in Celebration

By Allison Williams

Crowds of people lined the streets Friday evening to see the 2017 Havendale Christmas Parade. The parade started at 6:30 p.m. at Spring Lake Square and made its way to Havendale Boulevard. The City of Winter Haven and City of Auburndale hosts this celebration every year.

Police set up orange cones and directed traffic before, during and after the parade. Swarms of people could be found along the road’s edges anticipating the arrival of the floats.

Creative minds from all around inspired unique floats. From decorated boats to bedazzled cars to Star Wars floats, the parade was one to remember.

Casey McKibben, owner of McKibben Power Sport Honda in Winter Haven, and his team came up with a Star Wars themed float to showcase in the parade.

“I’m a big Star Wars nerd,” McKibben said. “With the movie coming out, we wanted to do something that the kids would like.”

McKibben said he really wanted “something memorable” for this year’s parade. The company participated in last year’s event for the first time and when the team realized how big it was in the community, they wanted to go even bigger this year. They put more money and time into the Star Wars themed float so that it would be something the community, especially the children of Polk County would remember.

After the parade, the McKibben Power Sports Honda float stopped in a parking lot, and children and families from all around came to see the design up close. Children even grabbed light sabers and jumped in front of the float for a Star Wars photo opportunity.

In addition to capturing the crowd’s attention with the Star Wars idea, having two dressed up dogs was also sure to turn some heads. Dressed in red and green holiday attire, Gator and Darby had their heads popping out of the truck window entertaining the crowd.

Gator and Darby are always in on the fun. “Both of them are always featured in our ads including television, YouTube, Facebook, Billboards, and Sales,” McKibben said.

Two young Winter Haven children, Mattie and Rylee, who were a part of the parade, shared their favorite part about the night.

“I liked riding on the float,” Mattie said. “It had really loud music.”

Her brother Rylee added, “I really liked it when we threw the beads to everyone.”

Members of Mattie and Rylee’s family have grown up attending the Havendale Christmas Parade every year. It has become a tradition for them.

Not only is the parade a fun event to bring the family and community together, but it is also a contest. Judges pick winners for titles such as the Parade Committee Award, the Spirit of Havendale Award, the Mayor’s Award and the Spectacular Sparkle Award.

With the massive turnout of family and friends around the area, the Havendale Christmas Parade proves to be a successful holiday event year after year.

On 12-7-17, Elbert Hale Wampler III (DOB 6-7-86) and his wife were in a verbal altercation at their Michelle St. home that turned physical. Lake Wales, Florida – The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has arrested two men in connection to an altercation at the Travel Inn Motel (located at 18700 Hwy 27 S Lake Wales). The incident occurred around 7pm Tuesday evening.
According to reports a fight was occurring at the Travel Inn Motel between several males.

According to the arrest affidavit, during the incident the victim, Michael Petrulionis, confronted the suspect, Sergio Tapia Palacios, and accused him of stealing a wallet from his motel room. The confrontation occurred in the parking lot of the Travel Inn. During the incident Sergio Tapia Palacios left and crossed Hwy 27 to the Blue Star Lodge. According to the affidavit he returned a few minutes later with another man Robert Chase Essary.

The affidavit goes on to say that the two suspects confronted Michael Petrulionis and his friends Robert Davis and Rodney Frazier. Sergio allegedly began punching Michael and removed a knife from his pants, either from his pocket or belt line. During the fight Michael was stabbed in the abdomen and transported by medivac helicopter to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center. At the time of this report the victim is underwent surgery for internal bleeding from a knife wound and is expected to recover.

After deputies arrived and after Miranda Warnings were read reportedly Sergio admitted that he used his knife to stab the victim but he said it was self-defense because the victim attacked him with a knife first. No witnesses were found that advised the victim had a knife. The manager of the motel provided sworn recorded statement advising that she saw the suspect with a knife as he stabbed the victim.

Sergio Tapia Palacios was charged with attempted second degree murder for having acted with a depraved mind, without regard for human life and with no premeditation or planning while using a weapon (knife) to attempt to unlawfully kill the victim. Sergio Tapia Palacios is currently on probation for trafficking in stolen property and has violated the terms of his probation by committing the new law violation of attempted 2nd degree murder.

When Lake Wales Police officer Waldron, arrived on scene and determined that Sergio Tapia Palacios was involved in the disturbance and took him into custody. While securing Sergio the second suspect, Robert Essary, approached him and was told to back away. Robert Essary again approached Officer Waldron, who secured Sergio and then took Essary into custody for resisting and interfering with an investigation. Essary was charged with battery for having unlawfully touched or struck the victim against his will. He was charged with resisting arrest by interfering with the investigation and apprehension of a second suspect. During the incident the suspect physically, resisted arrest by tensing and pulling away from the arresting officer. This was done without violence. Essary has one prior conviction for battery on 10-30-15.

Both suspects were arrested and transported to Polk County Jail.
