Black-Eyed Soozie Raises Funds For Fan’s Medical Expenses

Black-Eyed Soozie Raises Funds For Fan’s Medical Expenses

by James Coulter

For the past five years, Michael Townsend has lived up to his nickname, “Hippie”, by growing his hair shoulder length and weaving it into a tight braid.

Usually, he has grown out his hair to donate to the charity, Locks of Love, but he has been unable to continue doing that ever since his hair started turning grey.

Wanting to donate his hair to a good cause, Townsend decided to do the next best thing: sell his hair to help cover the medical expenses of his close friend.

Townsend did exactly that with the help of his favorite band, Black-Eyed Soozie, during a fundraiser Saturday evening at Jessie’s Bar in Winter Haven.

Both he and his friend have been fans of the band ever since it started in 1995, so he only considered it fitting to have them help host the fundraiser in his honor.

During the event, attendees could cast their votes whether or not to cut Hippie’s hair by donating their money into two jars: one to vote to cut his hair, the other to save it.

In the end, the vote to cut his hair received the most money, and Hippie gladly cut his hair to sell as a prize for the donations raised.

“This is an idea that I had, and I’m grateful that Carlos Unzueta [the band leader] was kind to donate their time to have this fundraiser,” he said. “We are excited for whatever turnout we get and what money we can raise for them.”

Formed in 1995, Black-Eyed Soozie was a true 1990s band, playing covers of popular 1980s and 1990s songs, and developing a musical style similar to that of other bands during that decade.

Aside from Carlos Unzueta, the main vocalist and band leader, the other four members include Jake Cockrell, bass player, Rafael Unzueta, lead guitarist, and Dale Black, lead drummer.

Though all four band members shared the same hometown of Lake Wales, they each had a distinct musical style that blended together within their group to create a style unique to them.

The band would continue to play local venues up until the 2000s when they disbanded. By that time, most of them had married and started families, leaving them little time for music.

Occasionally, during events such as this, the band would get back together to play the occasional venue and perform the same great music they became famous for.

“It is a great turnout,” Unzueta said. “There are so many friends out here who used to follow us back in the 1990s who are here tonight, so it is cool to see fans from the old days here partying with us still.”

Black-Eyed Soozie had one of their first gigs at the pub along Third Street in Winter Haven. More than 20 years later, they returned once again to the location to help out a loyal fan who had been with them since the very beginning.

The proceeds from their performance that evening would go towards the medical expenses of Rob Church, a long-time fan who recently received a double lung transplant after an initial single lung transplant was rejected.

Jessie Scubna, owner of Jessie’s Bar, has been a fan of the band herself since the 1990s, and she loves the energy that their music produces. As such, she was more than honored to host their venue that evening.

“Rob is a good friend of ours, so when we were approached to do this, it is something that we wanted to do,” she said.

Overall, the band successfully managed to raise $1,500 for their closest friends and fan, and they are more than overwhelmed by the turnout and support they received that evening.

“The biggest thing is that we came here with the main goal of raising money for our friend Rob,” Unzueta said. “Anything we can raise will help him out, so we are excited about this.”

Fourth Annual Fly Into Summer At Florida Aerospace Discovery

by James Coulter

Children are advised by their parents not to stare at the sun, but last Saturday, they had a chance to do exactly that safely.

The Imperial Polk Astronomical Society allowed children the opportunity to look at the sun through a special telescope during Fly Into Summer at The Florida Air Museum on Saturday.

Their solar telescope is equipped with a hydrogen alpha filter, which allows viewers to safely peer at the sun without having their eyes damaged by ultraviolet radiation.

Through the telescope, children had the rare opportunity to carefully inspect the sun’s surface and edge for sun spots and solar flares.

Cleveland “Astro Nut” Carter, a member of the Imperial Polk Astronomical Society, often attends events like this at Aerospace Discovery at the Florida Air Museum in Lakeland, including their annual Fly-In Expo and Aerospace Discovery Days.

By offering children such a glimpse of the sun, as well as other celestial objects, Carter hopes to inspire them to take an interest within astronomy, if not to consider the world outside of their planet.

“The most enjoyable thing for me is the kids seeing the sun through a telescope,” he said. “I would like the kids to learn that there is a definite correlation between the earth and space, whether it is the sun, the moon, the planets, or even the Milky Way.”

The solar telescope was one of many fun and educational activities offered that day during Fourth Annual Fly Into Summer at the Florida Air Museum in Lakeland.

The event allowed children and their parents free admission to the museum and its many exhibits, including the planetarium.

Aside from visiting the museum and looking at the sun, children could also climb into a model airplane, create their own sun catcher, create and fly their own paper airplanes, and bounce around in bounce houses.

Both Dairy Queen and Chik-Fil-A were on site to offer lunch and dessert, with the event offering coupons for free ice cream to the first 125 attendees who arrived at the event.

Within the very first hour, Dairy Queen had received the 125 free coupons, and served more than 200 customers in total, explained Linda Brown, the owner of Dairy Queen in Lakeland.

Both she and her co-owner have attended various events such as this at the museum, and they both love the overall lively atmosphere with children having fun and enjoying themselves.

“It has been a great day thus far,” she said. “Just being outside and seeing the excitement on all the children’s faces, seeing them run around and enjoy the open space.”

Fly Into Summer offers both children and their families to visit the museum and its many facilities, not only introducing newcomers to it, but hopefully inspiring young people to obtain an interest in aviation.

While last year’s event saw a small turnout due to morning rain, this year’s sunny weather drew in a much larger crowd, to the point where the parking lot filled up and required visitors to park on the grass.

“This has been our biggest turnout in the past four years,” said Jayme Jamison, Manager of Aerospace Discovery. “I had a lot of families say that they did not know that this was here. Hopefully, we can get repeat visitors for future events.”

Winter Haven Man Arrested For Impregnating A Minor Multiple Times & Drug Trafficking

Polk County Sheriffs Office Press Release

On Saturday, June 22, 2018, the PCSO Special Victims Unit obtained an arrest warrant for 33-year-old James McArthur Johnson, DOB 10/21/84, of 1503 13th Street NW in Winter Haven, for person over 21 impregnating a child under 16 years old (F-3), sexual battery by a person over 24 on a minor 16-17 years old (F-2), and lewd/lascivious battery on a minor 12-16 years old (F-2). All of these crimes were against the same victim, a girl with whom he has had an ongoing relationship, and has impregnated twice. The second pregnancy resulted in a miscarriage, at which time the victim’s parents became aware of the relationship.

As deputies approached the home, they observed suspicious activity – including Johnson handing something in a small baggy to a man who rode up to the house on a bike, then left after stuffing the baggy in his pocket. Deputies spoke to the bicyclist, who confirmed Johnson sold him some synthetic marijuana. Deputies observed another person approach the home in a vehicle, and a similar transaction. That person advised Johnson is a known drug dealer and possesses several firearms.

Johnson is a convicted felon, and has been to state prison three times.

Deputies took Johnson into custody on the arrest warrant for the sex crimes against a child, then obtained a search warrant for his home. During the execution of the search warrant, deputies seized:

• Two loaded firearms and several rounds of ammunition

• Multiple baggies of marijuana (total weight 42.3 grams)

• 9.7 grams of heroin

• 0.1 gram meth

• $760 cash

• Photos of the child he fathered with the victim, and the hospital band belonging to the victim from when she delivered the baby

Additional charges filed against Johnson in reference to the items found during the search warrant are:

• 75 counts possession of ammunition & firearm by a convicted felon (F-2)

• 1 count armed trafficking in heroin (Capital Felony)

• 1 count possession with intent to sell heroin (F-2)

• 1 count possession of a structure to sell drugs (F-2)

• 1 count possession of marijuana with intent to sell (F-3)

• 1 count possession of marijuana over 20 grams (F-3)

• 1 count possession of drug paraphernalia (M-1)

He’s being held on no bond for the armed trafficking charge. His criminal history includes convictions for armed robbery, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, burglary, and grand theft. He was last released from prison in 2014.

“This is a violent, dangerous man. We hope his next trip to state prison is a lengthy one – he clearly does not know how to obey any law. He’s what you call a true menace to society.” – Grady Judd, Sheriff

Hi my name is Carl,

What if this very day you were killed in a car accident, stabbed to death or a doctor said you were terminally ill and you would be dead in less than 90 days? Where would you spend eternity?

Listen, I used to think I was a nice guy. I had a good job, I had an amazing woman as my wife, I had 3 wonderful children, I owned a home. I coached little league.

One day my sister in law invited our family to church. I wasn’t overly excited. I’d been to church, I’d gone to Christian schools in junior high and high school. Too many hypocrites go to church for me, I said. I went though and it was okay. I went many more times and it was okay. One Sunday during music worship the Lord touched my heart. He opened my eyes to my life. My marriage was bad, even though it looked fine, my life in general was all screwed up. I realized I didn’t really know what love is and I wasn’t sharing true love. I was like a 13 year old kid saying I love you to a new girlfriend, I thought I meant it, but had no clue what it meant. The Lord touched me and made me realize I was the hypocrite.

I shortly after said the sinners prayer and gave my life to the Lord. I’m not perfect by any means. I still say and do things I wish I didn’t. I’m having to learn over the past 11 years how to be a better husband, father, friend and every day I fall short. I know though that I’m on a journey to live more like my Lord. No one will ever be perfect again. I just know in my heart that Jesus Christ was tortured, bleed and died for my sins. He is the only reason I know where I am going if one of the above happens to me today.

If you don’t know where you will be going if something were to happen to you today, but you have faith that their is God and Jesus will guide the way to heaven, then say this prayer with me.

Dear Heavenly Father, I know that I’m a sinner. I am truly sorry, and now I want to turn away from my past sinful life toward you. Please forgive me, and help me avoid sinning again. I believe that your son, Jesus Christ died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. I invite Jesus to become the Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. Please send your Holy Spirit to help me obey You, and to do Your will for the rest of my life. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

Did you pray this prayer today or do you have a question about a relationship with Jesus Christ? I’m not a pastor or a priest, I’m just someone who is learning to love others. If you said the prayer or if you didn’t, please feel free to email me and I would love to help direct you to others that can help guide you or I will pray with you or for you.

Ground Broken For New Apartment Complex In Winter Haven

Ground Broken For New Apartment Complex In Winter Haven

by James Coulter

More residents will soon be able to call Downtown Winter Haven their home once a new apartment building has been constructed next spring.

The ground breaking ceremony for the proposed 20 on 2nd apartment complex was hosted by Six/Ten LLC on Thursday, with more than 50 people attending the event.

Using a plow to break ground that day was Ryan Whitehead, contractor with Whitehead Construction, which will be helping construct the proposed building.

The apartment complex will contain 20 units, each with two bedrooms and luxury kitchen suites, and will be located along 2nd Street only a few blocks away from Grove Roots.

This entire effort is part of Six/Ten’s downtown project, a joint effort with Silver Properties to provide more than 125 residential units within the core downtown area.

Rather than place all of these units within a single complex, these units will be spread across the downtown area, including across from the brewery and across from the public library, explained Six/Ten Director, Joe Bogdahn.

In 2015, the very first apartments opened downtown within Rain Garden Apartments, located down the block from the proposed 20 on 2nd, and were the newest apartments built within Downtown Winter Haven in 37 years.

Such apartments provide better accessibility to the downtown area for local residents, providing them with walking distance from where they live to where they walk, shop, eat, and play.

“The key to all these locations is walkability,” he said. “We are focusing our efforts on the downtown core. We believe the missing piece of our project is having quality residential [areas] downtown.”

Six/Ten LLC, according to its website, “develops, leases and manages a diverse portfolio of commercial real estate properties and operating companies across Central Florida.”

As such, it has been instrumental in the past few years with helping spur economic development within Winter Haven, especially within its downtown area.

“We will continue to transform downtown Winter Haven by developing and leasing profitable commercial properties, promoting the construction of unique residential options, fostering high-paying jobs, and creating attractive urban spaces in which to play and work,” its website states.

Bogdahn mentioned how the downtown area has developed to the point where people out of town are traveling to the city for dining, shopping, and entertainment venues.

“[These] are people who are coming from Orlando to have dinner,” he said. “You all remember it was not too long ago when we had to drive to Orlando to go have dinner, but now you can right here in town.”

Mayor Brad Dansler also mentioned how the overall transformation of the downtown area has become known outside of the city, even by the Florida Governor himself.

Dansler told how he and other city mayors had dinner with Gov. Rick Scott in Tallahassee. When he said he was from Winter Haven, Gov. Scott mentioned how he and his wife had dinner at Fire Restaurant.

“Even the governor knows what’s going on down here,” he said. “We are growing responsibly and we are becoming a cool little city, and that is what we all want.”

Anita Strang, President of Main Street Winter Haven, mentioned how providing more residential spaces within downtown not only offered better accessibility to residents, but also allowed their money to remain within the area.

Over 70 percent of the disposable income of someone who lives downtown stays locally, providing a major economic impact within that area, she said.

This in turn not only creates better investment within the community, but also helps foster better relationships within it, she said.

“We all get to know each other, we are supporting each other, and we are building the community that we want to live in,” she said.
