Enjoy Caladiums And Half-Price Admission At Bok Tower Gardens This August

by James Coulter

What could be better than taking a stroll through scenic Bok Tower Gardens and viewing its many red, white, and pink caladiums? How about doing that while paying only half-price for park admission?

Florida residents can do exactly that with “I Heart Caladiums Month” and “Florida Summer Friends” all this month at Bok Tower Gardens.

All through August, park guests can enjoy the newly-planted caladium trail planted with 16 different beds with over 20 different varieties of caladiums.

More information about these plants can be learned by dropping by the visitor center and picking up a map identifying all of the different varieties planted within the gardens.

Even more opportunities to learn about these Florida-friendly tropical plants will be offered with three different events hosted each Wednesday this month:

  • How to use Caladiums Successfully in the Landscape (August 1, 12p.m. – 1p.m.): Learn about the history of the caladium industry as well as gardening tips on how to grow these flowers from third-generation Caladium farmer Terri Bates.

  • Classic Caladiums with Robin Heath (August 8, 12p.m. – 1p.m.): Want to know about the different varieties of caladiums and which ones make for excellent additions to your own home garden? Gain some gardening tips from Robin Heath with Classic Caladiums of Avon Park, Fl.

  • Caladium Walk (August 15, 12p.m. – 1p.m.): Enjoy a guided tour along the Caladium Trail with master grower John Arnett and the garden’s horticulture team as they teach you more about these versatile perennials and how you can plant your own.

Caladiums were selected as the flower of the month as it’s one of the very few that can grow within the harsh summer weather. This made them perfect additions during the dog days of summer in August.

“In the summertime, it can be difficult to grow different varieties of flowers because of the heat,” explained Erica Smith, Marketing Director. “Caladiums are perfect for that. They are a topical plant that loves heat and moisture and they grow very well, and they have very beautiful, vibrant colors with markings…It is a fun plant that looks great in the summer time and can stand up to our tropical weather.”

Florida residents can especially take advantage of seeing the flowers all this month with a special 50 percent discount on park admission.

All they need to do is pull up to the front gate, show their Florida ID/driver’s license, and receive 50 percent off their admission.

As with the caladiums, this discount was provided as a way to motivate many local residents to visit the park during the summer.

“We wanted to offer a perk to our local traffic,” Smith said. “A lot of people in August want to stay home in their air conditioning, and we are encouraging them and giving them an extra reason to come out and enjoy Florida sunshine in the summertime.”

With the vibrant colors offered by the new flowers and the added benefit offered by the discount for Florida residents, locals will want to stop by Bok Tower and smell the caladiums.

“They are really going to expect a full day in the gardens, and the extra plantings that we added add a lot of color to the garden, [since] typically in summer you do not have that many plants or trees or shrubs or flowers like you do in the spring,” Smith said.

Bok Tower Gardens is located at 1151 Tower Boulevard in Lake Wales, and is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Winter Haven Fire Fighters Battle Blaze While Ammunition Inside The Structure Goes Off

*** UPDATE ***

69 year-old Edwin Stensel was cooking inside of his kitchen when the fire erupted.  Stensel, who is on oxygen with a tank he carries around, was able to exit the residence as the fire intensified. Stensel, a retired veteran, suffered smoke inhalation as he exited the residence.  He was taken to a local hospital for treatement where he remains this evening in stable condition.

While on scene, responders heard the faint sounds of “meow” and began to find the source of the sound. A storage shed directly adjacent to the carport area of the home had numerous boxes and pallets inside. When investigators looked further, there was a box located with newborn kittens inside. It was determined the kittens were from a stray mother cat in the area. At this time, nobody has indicated they knew the kittens were there nor if the mama cat was known to anyone in the area.

Photo is the park manager holding the kittens after investigators found them. Polk County Animal Control took the kittens in their care. The mother was not  located.

Winter Haven Fire Fighters Battle Blaze While Ammunition Inside The Structure Goes Off

Yesterday at 1:24 p.m., the Winter Haven Fire Department responded to 64 Palm Lane Dr. in the Cypress Shores Mobile Home Community that is located just off Hwy 92 in Winter Haven. The disabled veteran living in the home escaped the fire, but was transported to a local hospital for smoke inhalation.

When fire fighters arrived, there were rounds of ammunition located within the home that were firing off from inside the structure. Flames were coming from the front of the home as well as both sides. The intense heat was starting to melt a neighboring home’s siding and carport. There were two LP tanks on the outside of the structure, but the firefighters were able to keep the tanks from exploding.

It took approximately 20 minutes for the fire to get under control. There were seven fire units that responded along with water tankers from the Auburndale and Lake Alfred Fire Departments. One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion at the scene.

The fire is under investigation. No injuries to any other residents in the mobile home park and no other structures were damaged.

“The close proximity of these homes poses huge challenges to fire fighters,” said Police Chief and Fire Administrative Director Charlie Bird. “Our fire fighters did an outstanding job in protected neighboring structures as well as ensuring the two LP tanks did not explode.”

The crash occurred at about 11:44 p.m., and the northbound lane of Hwy 27 was closed for about four hours for the investigation.

Young Boxing Champ Donates Belt To Surviving Brother Of Cancer Victim

Young Boxing Champ Donates Belt To Surviving Brother Of Cancer Victim

by James Coulter

The only victory greater than winning a fight within the boxing ring is winning the fight against cancer. The only thing that takes more strength and determination is living through the death of a loved one from cancer.

For this reason, young boxing champ Zee Zamora decided that his national qualifier boxing belt was better suited for his fellow boxer, AJ Taylor, whose brother, Xander, had recently passed away from cancer.

He was supposed to spar at a local benefit, but had a last minute trip to Chicago to visit family, especially his 100-year-old great grandmother.

While away on his trip, he decided to donate his belt to the Taylor family, not only as a sign of good sportsmanship, but also to honor the death of AJ’s brother.

The young boxing champ donated his belt, which he had won at the Sugar Bert National Qualifier in Punta Gorda, Florida, more than a month ago.

Zee recalls how nervous he felt before going into his first round, but his fear was subsided after he managed to win his first and second round and gain his victory within his third with a TKO.

“I loved it, and I kept pushing harder and harder, and then I won that last part through TKO,” he said.

As he could not make the benefit, as he was in Chicago at that time, he decided to make a video saying that he would donate his belt to AJ Taylor and offer his deepest condolences to his family upon the passing of Xander from cancer.

“He just lost his bother to cancer, and I could not imagine losing a brother,” he said. “I couldn’t handle that. So for [Xander’s] family, I donated a belt to show how strong AJ is to keep pushing through.”

When he was in kindergarten, young Zee would often be bullied and tormented by bullies older than him, some within fifth grade. Sometimes he would be body slammed by them.

So to help him gain confidence to stand against his bullies, Zee was inspired by his father, who was previously a boxer, to start boxing at the age of 8.

Recently, he had started boxing under the guidance of his coach, Marco Fazzini, at the Winter Haven Boxing Club. Both his coach and his dad pushed him to do his best, and his training would pay off by winning several victories.

To date, Zee has won as a two-time state champion, two-time Junior Olympic champion, and even one time as a national champion.

Currently, Zee is having trouble with his shoulder, requiring him to visit an orthopedic surgeon and delay a match he had scheduled for August 4. Nevertheless, he hopes to recover and continue his winning streak.

His father, Coach Zamora, having previously boxed with his own father, loves continuing the family tradition by being able to train and coach his son.

“As he is learning, I am learning more, so there’s always room for improvement,” Coach Zamora said. “It has given us something to do as far as boxing goes. It is something we can all do and have fun.”

Both AJ and Xander Taylor had previously boxed within the Winter Haven Boxing Club along with them. Coach Zamora could not think of anyone more deserving than his son’s humility than AJ, especially since his brother was a strong fighter.

“This kid [Xander] was so strong,” he said. “He was a great looking spirited kid who was strong, mentally and physically.”

His own son may have won many victories within his life, but knowing that he was kind enough to concede his own victory to someone who had fought greater battles was something especially to be proud of.

“It felt good that my son would do that, and it is something that makes get weak in the knees because it is for a good cause,” he said. “Knowing that the fact that I am raising a kid who is making good choices feels good too.”

His son, likewise, like a true champion, exhibits such humility as to know when someone else is much more deserving of honor.

“After all the victories that I have won, none of them can match the battle that Xander has fought,” he said.
