Black Panther Voice Actor Visits Auburndale City Con 2018

Black Panther Voice Actor Visits Auburndale City Con 2018

by James Coulter

Black Panther took time off his busy schedule ruling Wakanda and fighting alongside the Avengers to visit the small city of Auburndale. Or at least his voice actor did that.

James Mathis III, voice actor for Black Panther, was one of many special guests over the weekend to attend City Con, Auburndale’s annual comic book and geek fandom convention.

Mathis has provided the voice of Marvel’s titular black superhero in various video games and animated series, including Disney XD’s newest series, “Avengers: Black Panther’s Quest.”

While he has previously attended other conventions, he appreciated being able to attend a small convention within a small town like Auburndale.

“I think Auburndale City Con is a wonderful event to bring the citizens of Auburndale together,” he said. “I appreciate the intimacy of it and the opportunity to engage with fans who don’t normally have the opportunity to attend such a convention because they live within a small town.”

Not only does such an event offer a more intimate experience than most other large-scale conventions, but it allows local residents within the area the opportunity to attend such an event that they otherwise would not be able to.

“What I am enjoying most about this convention is the opportunity to meet fans who don’t always have the chance to meet the people they are fans of, to meet people who are involved with the things they appreciate,” he said.

Mathis was one of many special guests who appeared on guest panel discussions during this year’s City Con over the weekend in Auburndale.

Donovan Dolde, owner of Commemorative Comics, and self-appointed comic books guru, was another guest during the convention.

Through his local businesses, he specializes in researching comic books based upon the birth date of his customers and helping obtain those books for them.

Dolde has been a comic books fan for the past 40 years, even during a time when comic book fandom was on the decline during the late 1990s.

Often he would give books as presents to his younger relatives as to “pass the torch” onto them; but now he’s thrilled to be living in a time when interest in comic books are back on the rise.

While many other comic book fans were into collection and speculation solely for the money, he insists that true fans are in it for the love of comic books.

“Buy what you love,” he said. “Don’t do it for the money. Do it because you love it. People who are only in it for the money get out of it quickly, but the people who did it because they love comics stayed within it year after year.”

Gregory Page, creator of the “Adventures by George” YouTube vlogging channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyEzzSK8Wk07Q6g2oV8hTpg), was another local guest.

Page previously recorded video footage of the 2017 convention, and had shot video footage from many other prominent locations, local and out of state, related to geek culture.

Previously, he had visited Atlanta where he was able to find two filming locations for “The Walking Dead” television series, as well as locations from the “Avengers: Infinity War” movie, including Avenger’s Tower and the park where Iron Man confronted an alien invasion.

Page has a knack for finding opportune filming locations, even if it often means putting his nose where it doesn’t belong, though he has since learned to be more courteous about his filming.

“I have a bad habit of going up and start filming stuff… but I have gotten into the habit of asking,” he said.

This year’s convention was hosted in downtown Auburndale with most of the main festivities occurring at the City Park and within the Civic and Senior Centers.

Outside at the park, a special children’s area was set up offering recreational activities such as bounce houses and laser tag. The Senior Center hosted a gaming station where attendees could play video games with each other.

The main festivities occurred within the Civic Center, with vendors set up offering various comic books and geek fandom memorabilia.

This year was the first time within two years that the annual event had been hosted. The convention was canceled last year due to damage to the Civic Center from Hurricane Irma.

“We started behind the eight ball because of the damage to our Civic Center, but we have grown and we get great participation from the community and surrounding communities,” said Tim Pospichal, Mayor of Auburndale.

Pospichal enjoys video games. Though he did not want to divulge what games he enjoyed playing during his spare time, he did mention his love for video game history.

He especially appreciates the knowledge that is shared during the panel discussions, as he learns so much from them and their special guests.

A local convention such as this allows local residents and visitors an opportunity to share their love for their favorite interests, and he hopes that the event will continue to grow and remain successful in coming years.

“I believe that this will keep building and keep getting bigger,” he said. “A lot of people put a lot of effort into them. It means a lot to a lot of people, and we are impressed and relieved to see it all work.”

Husse, also known as Swiss Pet Care Inc., is a business dedicated to delivering healthy pet food right to your doorstep.

Astrid Oetliker, President of the local Husse originally started feeding her own pets these healthy, GMO free foods that are produced in Europe.

“I experienced the products on my own pets and saw the big difference after changing the food,” Oetliker said. “Thus, I moved from Europe to Florida to bring these excellent products to customers.”

Husse has been operating for 30 years worldwide and for three years in Florida.

As a pet lover, Oetliker knows the importance of feeding her pets a healthy diet.

For Oetliker personally, she feels that a combination of the high quality and personal relationships she builds with customers will elicit future success. The fact that Husse offers personal home delivery is also an added bonus.

Lake Wales Medical Center Raises Money for Polk County Heart Walk

Lake Wales Medical Center Raises Money for Polk County Heart Walk
By Allison Williams

On Friday, September 7th, the Lake Wales Medical Center hosted an employee Fall Carnival at the hospital to help raise money for their Polk County Heart Walk Team. This was in efforts to get closer to their final goal of raising $6,000. If they are able to reach this goal, it will beat out last year’s funds raised.

Employees showed their support by purchasing $5.00 lunches, entering a dunk tank competition, playing in a cornhole tournament and entering the money machine to win prizes.

“Darren Dubecky, Freddy Cabrera, Shayne Mccal-Cassady, Andrea Clyne, Sandy George, Greg Edwards and Rodney Bevis all sported red and black tutus for the hospital’s Fall Carnival,” said Maryemma Bachelder, Director of Community Relations. “They got an unexpected splash when Mel Mitchell-Green activated the dunk tank and CFO Steve Smith plunged back into the tank, creating a splash on the tutu crew.”

Jennifer Huston, Clinical Informaticist and Patty Landry, Case Management Director both donated money to enter the money machine for their chance at winning a prize.

“The machine included vouchers for a variety of prizes including logo items, movie tickets, and gift cards,” Bachelder said. Contestant Landry won an umbrella and a gift card to Dairy Queen on her turn.

Overall, the employees at Lake Wales Medical Center enjoyed themselves and it was all for a good cause. They laughed, played games, had lunch and even danced to the Cha Cha Slide song.

“The Fall Carnival was one of several fundraisers the hospital is holding in September to raise $6,000 for the Polk County Heart Walk,” Bachelder said. “So far, the hospital has raised about $4,800 toward the goal, with several fundraisers still to go.”

Other fundraisers that the medical center has held include:
• Silent auctions
• Bowling night
• Paper heart sales
• Cinnamon roll sales
• Auction for cooking classes with Executive Chef Serkan Sare

The Polk County Heart Walk will take place on Saturday, September 29 at the Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium:

Road Rage Lands Davenport Man Behind Bars

Road Rage Lands Davenport Man Behind Bars

PCSO Release:

On September 11, 2018 a PCSO deputy took quick action to keep a dangerous situation from escalating near the intersection of Ronald Reagan Parkway and Highway 27 in Davenport. The deputy heard some tires squealing and saw a pick-up truck pushing against the passenger side of an SUV. The driver of the pick-up, 41-year-old Lance Lambert, fled the scene and parked in a nearby shopping plaza.

When the deputy approached Lambert, he began to yell at him and would not cooperate. The deputy called for back-up and Lambert was taken into custody and cuffed. Cannabis and some unknown pills (which will be tested to determine what they are) were found in his Dodge truck.

Upon further investigation, deputies learned Lambert was involved in two separate road rage incidents. The victim of one of the incidents told authorities Lambert was stopped in a middle lane during a green light. Tejada asked if he was okay and Lambert replied yes, then suddenly he began screaming and threatening to shoot him. He then rammed his pick-up into the victim’s Dodge SUV.  A FedEx driver also told deputies that Lambert intentionally rammed into his FedEx truck in the same area.

Once cuffed, Lambert was taken to Heart of Florida Hospital for back pain and abrasions he likely received while ramming the trucks. He was treated and released into the custody of deputies. No one else was injured.

“We’re glad no one was severely hurt in this case of road rage. Thankfully, our deputy heard the incident and quickly responded to get this man under control before he did hurt someone.” – Grady Judd, Sheriff.

Lambert was on inmate release status for Conspiracy of Drug Trafficking (Cocaine).

Lambert has been booked into the Polk County Jail and charged with:

  •  2 counts of Aggravated Battery with a deadly weapon (the deadly weapon is his truck)
  •  Possession of cannabis
  •  Resisting without violence.

He has served time in Florida state prison and has previous charges include drug trafficking, DUI and probation violation.

Hundreds Of Reptiles Showcased At Repticon FIRExpo

Hundreds Of Reptiles Showcased At Repticon FIRExpo

by James Coulter

Hundreds of creepy crawly creatures sneaked and slithered over to the RP Funding Center in Lakeland for The Florida International Reptile Expo (FIRE) last weekend.

The annual reptile show allows visitors who prefer claws and scales over puppy dog tails to congregate and share their love for the reptilian world.

Attendees had the opportunity to peruse more than three dozen vendors and their collection of lizards, snakes, turtles, and other reptiles, as well as amphibians, insects, arachnids, and even exotic mammals.

Whether they were there to purchase their first reptilian pet, or to purchase dry goods and other supplies for the pets they already had, the expo allowed them the opportunity to meet all their needs under one roof for a whole weekend.

Scott Lang, owner of Family Reptiles in Lakeland, showcased creatures from his local collection of more than 600 reptiles, including many exotic species such as bull pythons.

Having operated his local business for the past 10 years, he appreciates how this hometown event allows him and other reptilian enthusiasts to come together and appreciate their enthusiasm for reptiles.

“I love the variety and the availability of different reptiles brought from different areas of Florida,” he said. “We have made a lot of customer relations, we have built quite the clientele, and [we are] working with the different reptile enthusiasts in the area.”

Lang attends the event whenever he can, and he appreciates how it continues to grow each and every year with more vendors and attendees.

“I think this year’s show was fantastic,” he said. “We have huge attendance numbers here…So it tells us that the industry is good and that there are a lot of reptile interest out there.”

Aside from pet vendors selling reptiles and reptile supplies, other vendors included herpetological societies promoting their conservation efforts.

Crocodilian Conservation is a non-profit organization that helps zoos and aquariums in their efforts to conserve the world’s most endangered crocodilian species.

The organization works across the state, but are currently constructing a new 16-acre conservation facility in Frostproof.

Once construction is complete within the next year, depending on their funding and assistance, the facility will help raise and contain crocodilian species that are endangered or potentially endangered.

Owner Bruce Shwedick was drawn to the small town due to the sheer natural beauty of Southern Polk County. He not only feels such an area will be ideal for the crocodiles, but will also attract a lot of potential visitors.

“I saw that Frostproof was an area of natural beauty that has a lot to offer to visitors that people don’t get to see in other parts of Florida, so I found that was an ideal location for the center,” he said.

Shwedick has been attending Repticon for several years, with its wide variety of reptiles and vendors drawing him back each and every year.

“I think it is a wonderful family event,” he said. “It gives people an opportunity to learn more about reptiles and to look at opportunities for having reptiles as pets or having a hobby of raising and breeding reptiles.”

FIRExpo has been hosted within Lakeland for the past ten years by Repticon, which has been hosting similar events across the state for the past 15 years.

This show within Lakeland has proven to be their largest event of the year, drawing in hundreds of visitors from within and outside of the city, explained Kim Dupree, show staff member.

This year proved especially busy with a greater turnout bringing in plenty of attendees and new vendors, she said.

“We are seeing a lot of new faces every year, and at our other shows,” she said. “There has been a lot of foot traffic, the vendors have reported great turnout, and customers are enjoying it.”

The overall sense of community among fellow reptile lovers had helped aid the event’s success over the past decade, and it’s expected to help it continue on for many more years to come.

“We love the community,” she said. “This is one of the expos where everybody really gets together. You see people you don’t normally see throughout the year…so [it’s great] seeing a community of people that you don’t always see, being able to catch up with old friends and meet new people.”
