Sun N Fun Continues To Fly High Into Wild Blue Yonder

by James Coulter

Everyone loves a good air show like the ones performed at the annual SUN ‘n FUN International Fly-In and Expo last week in Lakeland.

However, while the demand in air travel is expected to double within the next two decades, the overall number of pilots has decreased within the past three decades, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Emery Riddle University understands that this shortage of airline pilots, especially with increased demand for air travel, is a real problem, which is why they attend events such as Sun N Fun to help encourage the next generation to become interested in aviation.

At their booth this year, they offered young children the opportunity to color pictures of aircraft, with older children being offered the opportunity to take a virtual flight through virtual reality simulators. All the while, representatives from the aviation school were on hand to discuss their education program with many prospective students.

“We work with people in aviation to try to get young people involved and interested with stem activities, not only males, but females also,” said Gretchen Partington, Director of Events. “You have to catch them at a younger age in order to catch their interest, especially with young ladies.”

Partington had been working at the university for the past 18 years, and attending Sun N Fun for the past 19 years. She loves attending the event, not only to recruit the next generation of pilots, but to also hear the experiences from the past generation.

“I love the group of general aviators, when they come together, the passion that they share for flying, the stories that they tell, and especially our alumni who have been involved in the military, the earlier wars, to come back and share their stories about training at Emery Riddle,” she said. “For us, this has been a great show for as long as we have been involved with the event. It is in our backyard, so it is hard for us to miss.”

For the past 45 years, The SUN ‘n FUN International Fly-In and Expo has been hosting a diverse selection of aircraft including planes, helicopters, balloons, and even remote drones through spectacular demonstrations and air shows.

More than 200,000 guests and 500 exhibitors attend each year to watch as planes and other aircrafts soar into the wild blue yonder with airshow performances, as well as learn more about the field of aviation through exhibits, vendors, and seminars.

Several of these seminars were hosted by Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, an 80-year-old organization that represent the interests of aircraft owners and businesses. Their seminars this year touched on such important subjects as risk management for pilots, aircraft safety, stress management within the cockpit, and airport protection and security.

“AOPA since day one in 1939 has been focused on helping pilots fly more and fly more safely, and that is what we still do today,” explained Tom Haines, AOPA Media Director. “All of our programs are designed to make pilots better and be safe and enjoy their airplanes.”

Haines has been attending Sun n Fun for as long as he has been working with AOPA within the past three decades. During that time, he has seen the annual event grow tremendously, especially with innovation within aviation and aerospace technology.

“This is a great kickoff for flying season,” he said. “Up north in particular, people are starting to shake the frost off, this is a wonderful opportunity to come down and enjoy the sunshine, get your skills up again with one of our seminars, and it is wonderful to start flying season…Lakeland is a great town. We love coming down here because they are so welcoming, and it is wonderful to come and join the community.”

The annual event serves as the largest fundraiser for SUN ‘n FUN Fly-In, a non-profit organization with the stated mission, according to their website, “to preserve and enhance the future of flight through world-class events, inspiring and educating people of all ages.”

The event allows the organization to raise more than $2 million for their aerospace education programs, with $445 thousand allocated a year in local aerospace scholarships. All of their activities engage more than 35,000 local youth annually at their facility in Lakeland, according to their press release.

“No longer simply Spring Break for Pilots, SUN ‘n FUN has evolved into a true gem of Lakeland,” wrote Carol Cali, Director of Marketing, in the press release. “Some just call it southern hospitality, but it’s obvious that those who donate their time and talents to the event truly enjoy their work experience and have fun.”

Check Out What A Newly Revitalized Lake Wales Downtown Could Look Like

by James Coulter

Imagine walking down Lincoln Avenue in Northwest Lake Wales and seeing how a once vacant street had transformed into a more vibrant neighborhood with repaved roads and sidewalks, newly-planted foliage, and remodeled buildings.

Then picture yourself walking along Scenic Highway, either within a linear park along the highway teaming with green landscaping, or along the other side of the highway with wider sidewalks and bike lanes.

Then envision a stroll down Park Avenue and seeing the historic buildings refurbished back to their former glory, all while walking along a repaved road where the sidewalk and main road blend together as one, and where pedestrians and cars share the same road.

Imagine a newly refurbished Lake Wales where the Downtown and Northwest areas are unified into one single neighborhood where pedestrians roam, cyclists ride, and people can enjoy a diverse array of shops, cafes, and later in the evening, a vibrant nightlife.

If the city accepts a revitalization proposal as created by Lake Wales Main Street, in cooperation with town planning agency Dover, Kohl & Partners, then such a new and improved Lake Wales may very well transition from imagination into reality.

Last Friday evening, nearly 50 local residents congregated within the Lake Wales Women’s Club to see the final draft, or rather “in-progress draft”, of a proposal for a revitalization strategy for Lake Wales, especially the downtown and northwest areas.

The proposal was created after a weeklong session of collecting data about the local community and receiving feedback from community residents through workshops, walking tours, and research.

The final result was a plan to help make Lake Wales a better place to work, play, and live, with improved pedestrian accessibility, refurbished buildings and streetscapes, and increased housing and business opportunities.

Here are a few of the suggested ideas for the revitalization proposal:

Lincoln Avenue: What currently sits as a vacant area of the northwest section could be transformed into a livelier neighborhood with repaved streets, remodeled storefronts, and more greenspaces with trees that provide more share and foliage that provides a more vivid streetscape.

Park Avenue: During research of the old downtown area, an old photograph of a building along 244 Park Avenue was discovered. The building currently sits as a blank beige wall, contrasting with the historic architecture of the surrounding buildings. With the acquisition of historic grants, the building’s facade could be remodeled and restored to its former glory, allowing it to become a more presentable venue.

Seminole Hotel: As with the building along Park Avenue, the Seminole Hotel along First Street appears to be a shell of its former self. Through revitalization efforts, also potentially financed by historic grants, the building could be restored as to also make it a more presentable venue.

Grace Manor: In an effort to provide and diversify more housing opportunities, the Grace Manor area would be remodeled to extend the street grid with the addition of more sidewalks, greenways, and a diverse selection of courtyard apartment buildings, traditional houses, and small cottages.

Scenic Highway: To help curb traffic and make the downtown area more accessible to pedestrians and cyclists, a proposed roundabout would be constructed at the intersection of Scenic Highway and Crystal Avenue near the library. This would help to slow down traffic within the downtown area, and thus make it a better place to drive, walk, and bike.

Park Avenue And Scenic Highway: Both roads would be remodeled to tighten the roadway and widen the sidewalks, with the addition of bike paths, foliage, and parking spaces. This would make the areas more accessible by slowing down traffic and providing more opportunities for pedestrians and cyclists.

These were but a few of the proposed ideas to help make downtown and northwest Lake Wales a better place to live, work, and play as presented through a town design strategy by Lake Wales Main Street, in cooperation with Dover, Kohl & Partners.

Most of the proposals were inspired by suggestions made by local residents during a community workshop hosted earlier on Monday. During that meeting, data was collected through polls, surveys, and a mapping session where people could mark areas that needed the most improvement.

Further data was collected at the temporary design studio set up along Park Avenue, where residents could drop by and share their own ideas and suggestions about how their hometown could be improved. More research was conducted during a walking tour that week with select community leaders, who shared their hometown’s history and needs.

All of the data was collected and analyzed during the week to help prepare the “in-progress” draft of the town design strategy. Rather than being a final draft, the proposal would be subject to further revisions based upon the suggestions of local residents and officials.

This proposal will serve as a guide for Lake Wales officials as to better direct them towards adopting policies and projects that could help revitalized the city over a period of time, helping to gradually transform it into a better place.

Later that evening, attendees could take a closer look at the proposal with an exhibit of the various design plans and maps. Following the presentation, a survey was hosted to discern their ultimate thoughts on the proposal. The results showed overwhelming support from the attendees.

“What we have is a work in progress, not a final product,” explained Victor Dover, principal-in-charge for Dover, Kohl & Partners. “We feel that what you all call upon yourselves is to resume work on the great place that already started…to build upon that fine history. Here, when people drew lines on a map…the folks who did that…were the best in the world who did that, and they laid a fine foundation for you, and you have to take the pencil and finish the work that they started for you.”

Karen Thompson, President of Lake Wales Main Street, mentioned how the entire week was a cathartic experience, a real “communication blitz” where community residents, business owners, and leaders all came together to develop a single vision for their city.

“Much work is ahead, and it will take leaders like yourself who are willing to invest in the northwest,” she said. “You are giving us the tool in which to design neighborhoods, downtown, and connect everything in-between. You are giving us the map to rise to the level of expectations that we all know exist, we just need your direction and magic touch.”

Polk County Sheriff Press Release

On Sunday, April 7, 2019 at about 2:32 A.M., deputies with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle on Bomber Road at Avenue A West in the Wahneta area of Winter Haven.

The first deputies on scene found an unresponsive man and began life-saving measures on him, but once Polk County Fire Rescue arrived, the man was pronounced deceased.

The victim had no identification on him, and other attempts to identify him up to this point have been unsuccessful.

The vehicle that struck the man was not on scene as the investigation began, but returned a short time later.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as 46-year-old Lynwood Stanton of Drew Court in Bartow. He returned to the scene in a white 2001 Chevrolet Sierra Pick-Up truck, which had damage that was consistent with debris found on scene.

Mr. Lynnwood told deputies that he thought he had struck an animal, and checked for damage once he arrived at home. He said that once he realized the damages weren’t likely caused by an animal, he headed back to the scene.

According to the preliminary investigation, the Chevy Pick-up had been travelling east on Bomber Road when it struck the man in the roadway near Avenue A West. A witness to the crash told investigators that the pedestrian, who was wearing dark clothing, was walking or standing approximately 18 inches into the lane of travel.

Mr. Stanton was evaluated at the scene and showed no signs of impairment. Excessive speed and distracted driving are not suspected, but will be further investigated.

Impairment is suspected on the part of the pedestrian.

Bomber Road was closed for approximately 3 hours during the investigation.

Help Winter Haven Police Department Identify Car Burglar

Release by Winter Haven Police Department:

See the guy in this video? He obviously has all the time in the world as he finds a vehicle in the Lake Link area on 4-2-19 and takes his time rummaging through the vehicle. (Are those oven mits he’s wearing?)
He must have seen the camera because he looks up a couple of times. (We don’t think he smiled) Somebody should recognize his clothing to include the shirt with the emblem and distinctive pattern down the sides. Also his walk as he nonchalantly strolls on down the driveway. If you recognize him, call Heartland Crime Stoppers at 1-800-226-TIPS (8477) Callers are guaranteed anonymity and could be eligible for a CASH reward.

Convicted Felon With Sawed-off Shotgun Found Sleeping On Strangers Porch In Haines City

Gerius Adams

Haines City Police Department Press Release

Haines City man found asleep on stranger’s porch with loaded shotgun

HAINES CITY, FL – A Haines City man was arrested on five separate charges after he was found
asleep with a loaded altered shotgun on a stranger’s porch Thursday morning.
Gerius Demetric Adams, 26, is being charged with armed burglary of a dwelling, possession of a short barreled shotgun, possession of a weapon with an altered serial number, possession of a firearm by a
felon and possession of ammunition by a felon.
A resident of a rental home arrived home at 8:40 a.m. Thursday and looked through the living room
window to find a man sleeping on a front porch couch and police were called. Adams was covered up
with a blanket taken from a shed on the property.
The people inside the residence do not know Adams nor did they allow him to sleep on the porch. Found
with Adams was a loaded shotgun with a jagged end. The gun was shorter than the 16-inch minimum
required by Florida law. The serial number near the trigger appeared to be filed down and painted over.
Adams is a felon and not permitted to possess a firearm.

Adams told police that he had been drinking alcohol at a local establishment and decided to walk home
about 2:30 a.m. Thursday morning. Adams said he was drunk and “very tired” and walked onto the
porch and went to sleep.

Adams did not know where he got the blanket. Adams said he knew he was not supposed to have the
gun, but “needed protection”. The investigation is ongoing.

“Guns and alcohol are a bad combination,” Chief Jim Elensky said. “The most important thing here is
that no one, including Mr. Adams, was hurt. Those inside did the right thing by calling us and our
officers responded quickly.”
