  1. Place peaches in a large bowl, and gently toss with lemon juice. Place 1 cup of peaches in a blender, set aside remaining slices, and blend until smooth. Place yogurt into a bowl; stir in the peach puree and lemon zest until well blended.
  2. Cut the angel food cake into squares and place half in the bottom of a glass dish. Spoon half of the peach slices over the cake. Cover with half of the yogurt mixture. Place remaining cake squares over the yogurt. Top with peaches, reserving 5 or 6 slices for garnish. Cover with remaining yogurt mixture. Garnish with peach slices. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

BARTOW, Fla. (May 2, 2016) – Polk County, Florida and Republic Services of Florida agreed Friday to separate at the end of the current solid waste contract which expires on Sept. 30, 2017. 
 
Republic Services of Florida has determined that it will not participate in Polk County’s upcoming Request for Proposals (RFP) process. The RFP will address the collection of residential solid waste in unincorporated areas of the county during the period commencing Oct. 1, 2017, through Sept. 30, 2024. Based on collective experiences to date, both parties agree that a separation will be in the best interests of the community, allowing the county to work with other haulers.
 
Current residential solid waste collection service in Polk County is not expected to change between now and Sept. 30, 2017 as a result of the agreement reached Friday.

Polk County Sheriff’s Office Detectives are Conducting a Suspicious Death Investigation This Morning In Lakeland

PCSO Homicide detectives are conducting a homicide investigation that occurred last night in Lakeland. Preliminary information so far is as follows:

Around 11:30 p.m. on Monday, May 2, 2016, PCSO responded to a home on Everett Street in Lakeland in reference to a shooting. The victim, 33-year-old Eric Dontay Ackerman (DOB 10/25/1982), who lives at the aforementioned address, called 9-1-1 and said he had been shot. When deputies arrived on-scene, they found Ackerman bleeding profusely. Ackerman was taken to LRHMC, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Detectives continue to follow-up leads in this investigation. If anyone has information about this incident, they are urged to contact PCSO at 863-298-6200.

The PCSO Traffic Unit is investigating a vehicle versus pedestrian crash in Lakeland this morning

Update to vehicle versus pedestrian crash in Lakeland:

17-year-old Kalen Kirk was pronounced deceased at 9:25 a.m. this morning at Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center.

The roadways are still shut down.

The PCSO Traffic Unit is investigating a vehicle versus pedestrian crash in Lakeland this morning.

Preliminary information so far is as follows:

Around 6:18 a.m. on Monday, May 2, 2016, 60-year-old Shirley Cross of Lakeland, who is a PCSO School Crossing Guard supervisor (hired by PCSO in 1996) was heading eastbound on Clubhouse Road towards the intersection of Summerlin Hills Drive and Andros Blvd, when she struck 17-year-old Kalen Kirk, a George Jenkins High School student, who was running across Clubhouse to the bus stop located on Andros Blvd. Kirk was critically injured and transported to LRHMC, where he is in critical condition. Cross was checked out by EMS on scene and does not have injuries.

There is no crosswalk or school crossing at the intersection where the pedestrian crossed, and it was dark at that time of day. According to witnesses and preliminary information, Cross was unable to avoid striking the pedestrian.

The roadways in that area will be closed for at least two more hours while the Traffic Unit investigates. The investigation is ongoing. I will send an update when the roadways are open.

One Person Airlifted After Winter Haven Accident

Winter Haven, Florida – According to multiple sources an accident occurred around 6pm Sunday night. The accident occurred in the area of Lucerne Park Road  (don’t have exact cross road or verification if it is Old Lucerne Park Road).  Winter Haven Police Department has confirmed one person was medically evacuated by helicopter to Lakeland Regional Health Center. According to the Winter Haven Police Department  a single vehicle somehow lost control crashing into pole. The roadway in that area was closed.

We will bring you more information as it becomes available. 

Suspect in Stolen Bostitch Drills Investigation has been Identified

Resulting from a Crime Stoppers tip the suspect in the April 25, 2016 theft of two drills from Wal Mart was identified and arrested on April 28, 2016. The suspect was identified as Mark Anthony Fazzina, a 44 year old, who resides at 18721 Hwy 27 #12 in Lake Wales. During the investigation it was discovered Fazzina had pawned the stolen drills at a local pawn shop. Fazzina was also currently on probation for previous charges. Officer John Mongeon booked Fazzina into the Polk County Jail for the charges of retail theft, dealing in stolen property, and violation of probation. Thank you to the people who continue to take the time to call in information to help identify suspects, close cases, and recover stolen property.

On April 25, 2016 the unidentified subject entered Wal-Mart, located at 2000 SR60 E, selected two Bostitch Drills, and exited through the garden center without attempting to pay. He was last seen leaving in the vehicle in this photograph.

The Carillon Classic 5K Run & Walk features what many consider Florida’s most challenging 5K course, since it requires runners and walkers to cope with elevation changes as well as a variety of terrain, including paved roads and gravel and mulch trails. As they compete high atop “Iron Mountain,” one of the highest points on the Florida peninsula, runners are also exposed to soothing music from the famed Bok Tower carillon as well as beautiful gardens, citrus groves and mountain vistas. The event is open to adults and students in grades 1-12 and will feature team competition for the first time this year. All proceeds will benefit the Florida Public Relations Association’s Dick Pope/Polk County Chapter’s educational and professional endeavors, and the George W. Harris, Jr. Runaway and Youth Crisis Shelter.
