The following is a long excerpt from the Lake Wales Police Department affidavit (It should be noted that this is an unedited report of facts by the Lake Wales Police Department. These facts are up for question and everyone is entitled to question the validity of facts by law enforcement in a court of law. “On January 12, 2022 at approximately 1620 hours, I responded to Highway 27/ Central Ave to assist Officer Sittnick with a vehicle accident. Upon my arrival, I made contact with a witness,REDACTED. REDACTED stated he was unloading a truck in a construction work zone when he observed a Dodge pickup truck stopped in the left lane of Highway 27 just south of Central Avenue. REDACTED also saw a white SUV stopped directly behind the Dodge pickup truck. The driver of the pickup truck was later identified as, Dustin Raymond Lang. The driver of the white SUV was identified as, REDACTED.

REDACTED stated both parties were actively yelling at each other. REDACTED stated Lang said, I have one too” which he believed Lang was referring to having a gun. Shortly after, REDACTED observed Lang with a weapon, which appeared to be a black semi- automatic handgun. REDACTED stated he heard ‘Lang, “Rack the slide” on the handgun. REDACTED stated Lang held the handgun down by his side while hc was standing on his truck side steps, yelling at REDACTED,

I then made contact with victim REDACTED. REDACTED stated she was traveling north Highway 27 approaching the intersection of Central Ave. REDACTED stated she observed a Dodge pickup attempting to enter her lane of travel. REDACTED stated Lang pulled in front of her and came to an abrupt stop. REDACTED stated Lang then exited his vehicle, brandishing a black handgun and started cussing at her. REDACTED stated Lang pointed the handgun in her direction and waved it around. REDACTED stated the handgun was never pointed directly at her.

This act placed her in fear for her life. REDACTED remained inside of her vehicle during the course of the altenation. REDACTED descdbed the handgun to be black or silver 9mm. REDACTED stated Lang -entered his vehicle, and reversed into her front bumper causing a vehicle crash. REDACTED advised she and Lang remained on scene until law enforcement arrived.

‘I made contact with Lang on scene. Lang was sitting in the driver seat of his vehicle. I requested Lang to exit his vehicle and walk back towards me. There, were no passengers inside Lang’s vehicle. Lang advised he did have multiple firearms inside of the vehicle. Lang was placed in handcuffs and secured inside of my marked patrol vehicle. Post Miranda, Lang wished to have an attorney present and did not want to answer any of my questions.”

“A search of the vehicle was completed and 3 firearms were located. A black HK USP Compact 40 S&W semi- automatic handgun, serial numher REDACTED was located inside of Lang’s center console. The pistol was dissembled with the slide and magazine removed, This handgun matched the description given by REDACTED  and REDACTED. A tow sheet was completed and the vehicle was removed by Sunbelt Towing.

During the course of my investigation, I determined Lang intentionally and unlawfully threatened by word and act to do violence to REDACTED, At the time Lang appeared to have the ability to carry out the threat, to create a well-founded fear that violence was about to occur. The assault was made with a deadly weapon.

The Auburndale Police Department Participates in High Visibility Enforcement Program to Improve Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety

The Auburndale Police Department Participates in High Visibility

Enforcement Program to Improve Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety

Polk County ranks in the top 25 counties in Florida for traffic crashes resulting in

serious and fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists. To help reverse this trend, the Auburndale Police Department is participating in the Florida Department of Transportation High

Visibility Enforcement (HVE) Program aimed at educating motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians

on Florida’s traffic laws to improve safety on city roads.

Starting this month through May 2022, the Auburndale Police Department will have additional officers on patrol on State Road 559 (Berkley Road), between U.S. Highway 92 and Donovan Drive. This specific area has a high occurrence of pedestrians and bicyclists’ crashes. Special attention will be directed towards increasing awareness of the dangerous behaviors that are contributing to serious and fatal injuries at these locations. Officers will look for drivers speeding, failing to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks, conducting improper turns or signal violations and using hand-held devices while driving.

Officers also will watch for pedestrians who cross the street illegally or fail to yield to motorists who have right-of-way. Bicyclists will be stopped for riding against traffic, riding at night without lights or not abiding by the same laws as motor vehicles. Officers will issue warnings and citations only when appropriate.

“Whether you are on foot, behind the wheel, or on a bike, you have a responsibility to share the

road safely,” said Chief Andy Ray. “Understanding the rules of the road helps ensure we all arrive at our destination safely and makes our streets safer for everyone.” Funding for this program is provided through a contract with University of North Florida’s Institute of Police Technology and Management (IPTM) funded by the Florida Department of Transportation. The Auburndale Police Department will receive funds for overtime hours for officers to conduct operations and for special training on Florida’s bicycle and pedestrian laws, procedures, and best practices.

To keep the public safe, the Auburndale Police Department offers the following tips when biking,

driving or walking:

§ Drivers: obey speed limits, never drive impaired, and always watch for pedestrians and

bicyclists

§ Bicyclists: obey traffic laws, ride in the direction of traffic, and use lights when riding at

night

§ Pedestrians: cross in crosswalks or at intersections, obey pedestrian signals, and make

sure you are visible to drivers when walking at night

Mulberry man fatally shot; suspect then critically wounds himself

A Mulberry man was shot and killed in his backyard Sunday evening, January 16, 2022, the suspect then turned the gun on himself a short time later, causing critical injury.

Deputies from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene on Bailey Road in an unincorporated area of Mulberry at about 9:16 PM following a reported shooting.

The 38-year old victim, identified as Cipriano Jimenez Toribio, was found deceased with apparent gunshot wounds in his head. Family members allowed PSCO to reveal Mr. Toribio’s identity.

A K-9 unit searched for the suspect and located him about a half-mile away; he was unresponsive with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in his head, and in possession of a handgun. He was transported to a local hospital on life support.

The suspect was identified as 27-year old Edward Flores. According to Flores’ mother, her son has been staying with her and had a drug problem. She said he had been drinking alcohol and appeared to be high when he left the house that night, just before the murder.

Flores’ mother owns the residence where Mr. Toribio has lived.

“Our victim and the suspect were friends. The victim is a roofer and a part-time minister. In fact, he has repeatedly tried to help the suspect and has prayed with him in regards to the suspect’s drug problem.” – Grady Judd, Sheriff.

PCSO Homicide detectives spoke with a witness who was with the victim at the time of the murder.

The witness said he and the victim had just returned from the store and found that all of the circuit breakers had been shut off.

As the two were standing in the kitchen, Flores appeared in the doorway of the back porch, pointed a gun at them and ordered them both into the backyard.

Once in the yard, Flores asked, “What did you guys do?” The victim answered that they had just returned from the store and then his cell phone rang. Flores took the phone from him.

The witness said that the victim told Flores that he had no problems with him (Flores) or his mother, and that is when Flores shot the victim and he fell to the ground.

Flores then pointed the gun at the witness and said, “Tell me where you went and don’t lie to me.” The witness replied to him that they went to the store, and Flores pointed the gun at the victim and shot him again. That’s when the witness ran away.

The K-9 Unit located Flores less than an hour after the murder occurred.

At this time, Flores remains hospitalized on life-support.

The investigation is ongoing.

Edward Flores’ prior criminal history includes sixteen felonies and six misdemeanors, consisting of charges for carrying a concealed firearm, burglary, multiple grand thefts and drug possessions, providing false information to a pawn broker, and violations of probation.

A video of Sheriff Judd speaking about this case is available on the PCSO Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/polkcountysheriff/videos/492793708945060/

Bartow Shows “We’re Better Together” With Annual MLK Jr. Parade

by James Coulter

In the face of relentless adversity, especially during these uncertain times, the City of Bartow showed its community that “We’re Better Together” during its annual parade on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

The Bartow Deacons and Stewards Alliance hosted its annual Martin Luther King Jr. and George H. Gause Parade and Festival on Jan. 17. The parade started with units lining up around 10 a.m. before making their way along Main Street in the downtown area.

Rico Reed of the Bartow Deacons & Stewards Alliance represented the city as the Grand Marshal. The proud members of the local fire and police department, with the Honorable Sheriff Grady Judd and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, led the parade, with city officials and representatives following close behind.

The parade featured several dozen units from city and county services and local businesses, schools, churches, and non-profit organizations. Participating in the parade was the Summerlin Academy ROTC, Bartow Yellow Jacket Band, BayCareKids, the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Bartow Youth Football, and Unlimited Potential Child Learning Center.

The parade concluded at the Carver Recreation Center at 520 Idlewood Ave S, where a festival was hosted with various vendors, food trucks, and other activities.

The Bartow parade was one of many events hosted in the county to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Parades were also hosted on Saturday in the cities of Winter Haven, Lake Wales, and Lakeland.

Bartow will be hosting a weeklong celebration, which started with their Gospel Fest on Sunday, and will continue with several other events through the week and concluding with their parade and festival on Saturday.

Welcome, World Travelers! The Eternals Is an Eternal Slog—Yet Still Entertaining!

Welcome, World Travelers! The Eternals Is an Eternal Slog—Yet Still Entertaining!

by James Coulter

As I mentioned in my Spider-Man: No Way Home review, the hardest thing about reviewing Marvel movies is that most moviegoers are either already on board with the Marvel Cinematic Universe or they’re not. If you’ve seen every MCUfilm since Iron Man, chances are you’ve already watched The Eternals when it was released in theaters in September. Otherwise, you’re probably not even going to give it a chance now that it’s streaming on Disney Plus.

Regardless, the MCU’s longevity has been an undeniable cinematic achievement. At worst, these movies were above average popcorn flicks. Otherwise, they’ve all been record-breaking blockbusters with nary a “bad” movie among them. Still, the law of averages dictates the MCU will inevitably experience a flop, and The Eternals was long anticipated to be that flop. Even after it earned more than twice its budget in the box office (even despite the pandemic), the movie received mixed reviews from critics and fans alike. But does The Eternalsdeserve to be ranked alongside Iron Man 2 or Thor: The Dark World as the “worst” Marvel movie?

The Eternals is a group of superpowered extraterrestrial beings sent to earth at the dawn of human civilization. Their mission, as given to them by a cosmic space god called a Celestial, is to oversee human development while protecting the fledgling human race from malevolent space monsters called Deviants.Nearly 500 years after the last Deviant had allegedly been destroyed, the now disbanded Eternals must reunite from across the globe after new Deviants emerged. What is the cause of these new Deviants? What can the Eternals do to stop them? And how does it all tie into their overall mission?

Let’s start with the positives. The movie has a very interesting premise. In the spirit of Chariot of the Gods or Ancient Aliens, the Eternals are extraterrestrial beings tasked with protecting humanity and overseeing their evolutionary development through history. This premise raises many interestingphilosophical quandaries and explores themes about war, peace, intervention, and progress.

The third act is also extraordinary. As with every other MCU flick, the movie ends with a climatic battle where all the good guys have to team up to defeat the villian, and the action scenes that result certainly live up to being the selling point of the entire film. The Eternals has a great beginning and end. The problem, unfortunately, is in the middle.

Sandwiched in between an intriguing opening premise and a dramatic third act is a very long, drawn out “getting the band back together”-style storyline where the main characters travel the globe to locate the other characters and solve their conflict. What follows is a very boring slog as the movie takes its sweet time developing each of the ten main characters—yes, all ten of them!

This movie is two-and-a-half hours long, and it certainly feels that long, if not longer! As with other MCU flicks, there’s plenty of engaging action and witty dialogue to keep you entertained, but the remainder of the movie is bogged down by scenes of lengthy exposition and flashbacks. As CNet’s Mike Sorrentino explained in his review, the “film crams in so many characters and subplot that it becomes tough to digest….You end up having to wait through the entire first half to actually see what powers these heroes are capable of.”

Honestly, this movie isn’t that bad. But it certainly would have worked better as a mini-series on Disney Plus than a theatrical film. A streaming series would have allowed the plot to progress more gradually and each of the characters to be better developed without rushing to meet the timeframe of a feature-length movie. And this movie has plenty of interesting premises and characters worth exploring. My favorite has to be the character who has been starring in Bollywood movies for nearly a century by pretending to be the descendent of each actor he pretends to be.

So is The Eternals the worst Marvel movie? No! Not by a long shot. Not when The Incredible Hulk exists. While it’s not perfect, The Eternals still has plenty of the exciting action, witty dialogue, and engaging character moments beloved in the MCU. So if you’re hoping for a good Marvel flick, The Eternals still has everything that makes Marvel flicks good. Just prepare to pace yourself and pause the movie when you need a breather.

More Than 600 Kids from 11 States Played at All-Star Youth Football Tournament in Lake Wales

More Than 600 Kids from 11 States Played at All-Star Youth Football Tournament in Lake Wales

by James Coulter

While Washington DC faced lows of 20 degrees with chances of snow, Lake Wales has slightly milder weather at above 60 degrees. Micah, 13, of the Woodridge Warriors, considered it ideal weather for playing football with his team.

Micah had been playing football since he was four. He and his teammates took to the fields at the Lake Wales Soccer Complex. The weather was great, the fields were some of the best he played on, and his expectation that weekend, in his own words, was “that we win.”

“It is a nice field,” he said of the sports facility. “One of the best fields I have been to down here, the second best.”

Micah was one of more than 600 student athletes who attended the All-Star Youth Football Tournament in Lake Wales this Weekend. Over 625 players registered for the event, and a total of 25 teams competed on three fields at the Lake Wales Soccer Complex on both Saturday and Sunday.

Countless spectators lined each of the three fields with blankets and lawn chairs to watch the many football games hosted that weekend. Otherwise, they could peruse the concession stand, as well as the many food trucks and vendors on-site.

The football players arrived with their families from 11 states, including Delaware, Jersey, Washington DC, South Carolina, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Georgia. Their arrival filled out many of the local hotels, including the local Holiday Inn and Hampton Inn, explained Andy Oguntola, President of PSC Lake Wales Campus.

Oguntola had arranged the football tournament with Chad Mascoe, Owner of Athletes United Group. The event had been hosted for the past three years, and they wanted to bring it to Lake Wales, not only to utilize their Soccer Club facility, but also to facilitate local economic development.

“Our ultimate goal for this weekend is to bring good competitor football here for all these people traveling from all across this country, and let these kids have an end-of-the-season good football event,” Mascoe said. “Andy brought me out here and showed me the facility. For me, it was a no brainer. We were able to bring three fields out here, and we had a lot of parking and space out here, and it was a great area to do it.”

Friday evening before the big weekend, Oguntola and Mascoe hosted an adult social for the parents and a bowling party for the children over at Cypress Lanes in Winter Haven. With their families taking lodging at local hotels, eating at local eateries, and engaging in other activities, the sports event has proven to be a real spur for local economic development, Oguntola said.

“Our goal and focus is to bring great football to Polk County, but most importantly, it is MLK Weekend, and we want to make sure we keep the kids on the field and out of the streets, so our whole focus is to turn young boys into men,” he said. “We want to thank the City of Lake Wales for their support, City Manager James Slaton, and Mrs. Stephanie for helping us put this together, and also our City Commisioners.”

Polk County Woman Charged With Illegally Using A Police Officers Stolen Credit Card Number To Order Papa John’s Pizza.

Ayzia Quintanilla

Lake Wales, Florida – The Lake Wales Police Department has arrested Ayzia Quintanilla (DOB: 05/31/2000) and charged her with Fraudulent Use Of A Credit Card, Obtain Property By Fraud, & Criminal Use Of Personal Identification. The charges stem from an incident that occurred on January 3rd. That’s when police allege Quintanilla used the stolen credit card number of one of their police officers to buy pizza from the local Papa John’s. Quintanilla was currently on bond for a previous arrest of trafficking in narcotics and other charges.

The following is a long excerpt from the Lake Wales Police Department affidavit (It should be noted that this is an unedited report of facts by the Lake Wales Police Department. These facts are up for question and everyone is entitled to question the validity of facts by law enforcement in a court of law. The Daily Ridge does not rewrite these facts as some meanings or interpretations could be in error and change context. We hope readers appreciate being able to read the information and come to their own understanding and conclusions).

“On 1/03/2022, I was informed by Officer Sarah Sittnick, she was a victim of Identity Theft, Fraud, and Obtain Property by Fraudulent Means. Officer Sarah Sittnick stated she got a notification that her Debit Card was used to order a pizza from Papa Johns located at 2006 State Road 60 East, Lake Wales, Polk County, Florida. The total of this transaction was S32.69.

Detective Hartwell travelled to Papa Johns and was informed the pizza and wings ordered with the name Sarah Sittnick and was delivered to 541 W. Central Avenue #223 Lake Wales, Polk County, Florida. This location is a hotel named the Vintage Inn.

Detective Hartwell and I travelled to 541 W. Central Avenue #223, Lake Wales, Polk County, Florida and knocked on the door. Ayzia Quintanilla answered the door at which time Detective Hartwell and I could both clearly see Papa Johns Boxes within the room. Detective Hartwell then asked Quintanilla if she ordered and received a pizza from Papa Johns today. Quintanilla answered “no” but explained she did yesterday. Quintanilla Then picked up a Papa Johns Box from near the door and handed it to Detective Hartwell showing it was an old box. Detective Hartwell then pointed at what seemed to be a new Papa Johns Box in the back of the room that could be seen when the door was answered and asked when she ordered that box. Quintanilla began to stutter and became extremely nervous. Detective Hartwell asked if she would bring the box to him so he could see if it was fresh. Quintanilla walked the Pizza Box to Detective Hartwell and handed it to him. Detective Hartwell inspected the box and on the label it showed the pizza was intended for a Sarah S and was the order that was fraudulently ordered using Officer Sarah Sittnick’s Card. It should be noted this entire interaction was a consensual encounter.

I asked Quintanilla where she worked at which time she answered Dunkin Donuts located at 24195 US-27 N, Lake Wales, Polk County, Florida. It was later learned Officer Sarah Sittnick recently used her card at the Dunkin Donut’s where Quintanilla worked.

I then travelled to Quintanilla work and reviewed the video of the day Officer Sarah Sittnick conducted the transaction, Which was 01/01/2022 at 0855 hours. In the video I observed Officer Sarah Sittnick pull up to the drive through window where Quintanilla checked her out. Officer Sarah Sittnick handed her Debit Card to Quintanilla, while checking her out. Quintanilla appears to use her phone to take a photo of the Debit Card.

Quintanilla willfully and without authorization fraudulently used personal identification information concerning Officer Sarah Sittnick. Quintanilla did so first without obtaining the consent of Officer Sarah Sittnick.
Quintanilla used Officer Sarah Sittnick’s Debit Card to fraudulently obtain food from Papa Johns. Quintanilla engaged in a scheme to defraud. Quintanilla thereby obtained food from Papa Johns using Officer Sarah Sittnick’s Debit Card.
Quintanilla is on pretrial release. There is probable cause to believe, based on this arrest, that the defendant has committed a offense while on pretrial release.

Quintanilla is being charged with fraudulent use of Credit Card, Criminal Use of Personal Identification, and Obtain Property by Fraudulent Means.
