HOSPITAL FOCUSES ON HEART FAILURE FOR HEART-HEALTH MONTH

HOSPITAL FOCUSES ON HEART FAILURE FOR HEART-HEALTH MONTH

 hearthealth

Lake Wales, FL – Lake Wales Medical Center will hold a free program to provide education about heart health, and its new program to help heart failure patients and their physicians monitor their health.

The program will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 13, at Church on the Move, 2039 SR 60 East in Lake Wales. Sal Lopez, manager of the hospital’s cardiac catheterization lab, will be the featured speaker.

Lake Wales Medical Center is the first facility in Polk County to implant a new miniaturized, wireless monitoring sensor to manage heart failure (HF). The CardioMEMS system is the only FDA-approved heart failure monitoring device that has been proven to reduce hospital re-admissions.

The CardioMEMS system uses a sensor that is implanted in the pulmonary artery during a non-surgical procedure. The sensor measures pressure in the pulmonary artery and alerts the physician when pressure increase. Increased pressures appear before weight and blood pressure changes, which are often used as indirect measures of worsening heart failure. The new system allows patients to transmit daily sensor readings from their homes to their health care providers, allowing for personalized and proactive management to reduce the likelihood of hospitalization.

“This technology allows physicians to react to potential issues before the patient even notices symptoms, and therefore improve the outcomes for heart failure patients,” Lopez said. “That’s a great benefit to patients.”

Heart failure occurs when the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body’s demands. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 5.1 million Americans have heart failure, with 670,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Patients with heart failure are frequently hospitalized, have a reduced quality of life and face a higher risk of premature death.

“We at Lake Wales Medical Center are committed to improving patient care and investing in technology and services that will help our physicians and patients better manage their health care,” said hospital CEO Rebecca Brewer.

To register for the free Feb. 13 education program and dinner, visit www.LakeWalesMedicalCenter.com and click on the Sweet-Heart Dinner banner on the Home page, or call 679-6869. The evening includes dinner, free blood pressure checks, educational information on heart health, and the presentation. There is no cost, but pre-registration is required.

New Panther Point Trail Is Now Open

Bartow, Florida – Polk County’s new Panther Point Trail northern phase is now open and ready for hikers, mountain bikers and nature enthusiasts.

panterpoint

This 5-mile section of the nature trail is the first phase of the project that is open to the public. Once completed, the entire trail will ultimately run 8.75 miles from the Marshall Hampton Reserve trailhead at 3115 Thornhill Road, Winter Haven to the Fort Fraser Trail on U.S. 98 South.

The first phase of the trail consists of 5 miles of a combination of natural and stabilized soils.  The trail is suitable for hiking, jogging, wildlife viewing, nature photography, off road biking and horseback riding. Horseback riders must obtain a Special Use Permit by calling (863) 534-7377.  Dogs are allowed on the trail, but must be on a leash.

At this time, Panther Point Trail has only one entrance; so it would be a maximum of 5 miles in and five miles back. The trail winds through oak hammocks, pastures, wetlands and manmade lakes, along the eastern side of Lake Hancock.

This is a remote trail with no facilities.  All persons planning to hike the trail should be prepared with good walking shoes, water, insect spray and a cell phone. Wildlife in the area is abundant and there is a good potential for alligators to be present on the trail. All wildlife is protected and must not be disturbed.

The development of Panther Point Trail is a cooperative effort between the Southwest Florida Water Management District, the Florida Department of Transportation and Polk County Board of County Commissioners. Polk County Sheriff’s Office Working Fatal Crash On 98

98crash

Highlands City, Florida – At approximately 4:10 p.m. this afternoon a crash occurred on US 98 approximately 500 Yards South of Smith Lane (south of the 540A intersection), Highlands City. The crash involved three vehicles with one person who was ejected and subsequently declared deceased by Polk County Fire/Medics on the scene.

US 98 in the area of the crash is a 6 lane highway with a grass median and grass shoulders with break down lanes on the outside edges. It was daylight with clear visibility at the time of the crash.

Interviews and physical evidence shows that a Green Jeep Cherokee driven by 33-year-old Amanda M. Robinson of Wachula was driving northbound on US 98 at a high rate of speed. As it approached another vehicle, the Cherokee drove off the right (east) shoulder onto the grass as it passed other vehicles. The driver of Cherokee lost control, at which time it began to rotate counter clockwise in a northwest direction. It rotated across the grass shoulder and three northbound lanes. Upon entering the center median, the Cherokee began to flip in a “barrel roll” as it continued northwest. During the roll, Ms. Robinson was ejected into the southbound lanes of travel. At the same time as the Cherokee was coming across the median, a Silver Chevrolet Pick-up truck driven by 56-year-old Charles Thivierge of Lakeland and a Black Ford pick-up truck driven by 34-year-old Sommer N. Coy of Bartow (with her daughter as a passenger, 6-year-old Autumn Coy), were southbound on US 98. The Ford was in the le
ft (inside) lane and the Chevrolet was slightly behind it in the center lane. Both drivers saw the Cherokee coming across the median and attempted to move to the right.  The Ford was struck by debris from the Cherokee receiving moderate damage to its driver side. The Chevrolet struck Ms. Robinson as she was ejected into his path of travel. The Cherokee came to final rest in the outside lane of northbound US 98, facing west. The other two vehicles involved came to a controlled stop on the west shoulder of southbound 98.

Detectives determined that Ms. Robinson was not seat belted and her vehicle airbags did not deploy. Mr. Thivierge was seat belted and his front airbags deployed. Ms. Sommer Coy and Autumn Coy were seat belted. The airbags in their vehicle did not deploy. Polk County Fire/EMS transported the Coys to Bartow Regional Medical Center with minor injuriesthey were later released.

Excessive speed and reckless driving on the part of Ms. Robinson appear to be factors in this crash.

Traffic on U.S. 98 in both directions was congested during the traffic crash investigation. Southbound lanes were closed for approximately 4 hours during the investigation and traffic was re-routed. Traffic flow was restored at approximately 8:45 p.m.
According to the Polk County Fire Rescue the call for service came in around 4:30pm.

We will update this article as soon as more information is available.

Guns Galore Store In Lakeland Burglarized: At Least 46 Handguns Were Stolen

Guns Galore gun store burglarized again, at least 46 handguns stolen

gunsgalore
Early Sunday morning, at approximately 4:00 a.m. on January 29 Polk County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a burglar alarm indicating glass breakage at Guns Galore, 2440 U.S. Highway 92 East in Lakeland.  Deputies arrived within three minutes and discovered the front door lock was broken and the glass gun cases within the business were broken.  No suspects were located inside the business and no suspects were located following a canine track attempt. Guns Galore has no video surveillance.

At least 46 handguns were stolen from the glass display cases near the front door of the business.  Deputies canvassed surrounding businesses for video cameras and requested other business representatives to respond to try and recover possible footage of suspected persons or vehicles.  Surrounding districts and counties were notified of the burglary and theft.

“First and foremost, there are at least two dangerous suspects out there who stole nearly 50 handguns and will now use them and traffic them to a bunch of likely violent thugs and criminals who will in turn use these guns to prey on the innocent public to rob, intimidate, hurt, and possibly kill. If anyone saw something, or if you hear something about this crime, please call us or call Heartland Crime Stoppers. We want to find and arrest those responsible for this crime, and we want to recover as many of these guns as possible. Second, retail gun dealers have a moral and ethical obligation to safely secure their firearms inventory from theft. Guns Galore was burglarized before. They broke in with relative ease, as they did again this weekend. Is it too much to ask, Guns Galore, to harden your store and make it a little more difficult for your firearms to be stolen and transferred to the criminal marketplace? We know that determined thieves are capable of going to extraordinary length
s to separate hard working people from their hard earned propertyand the fundamental responsibility of this theft (and others) lies with the thieves who committed the crime. But there must be a special public safety obligation on the part of gun store owners to harden gun stores from theft.”  Grady Judd

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives responded to the scene to assist with the investigation and conduct their own full inventory audit of Guns Galore.

Surveillance video from a neighboring business shows a light colored sedan turn onto Peachtree Street and park behind the incident location, where two suspects are seen running to the vehicle and fleeing the area westbound from the incident location. Other video from other businesses in the area also show two suspects dressed in dark pants and dark jackets carrying bags and tools.

Guns Galore was the victim of a business burglary on 12/24/16, where 12 firearms were stolen. The business owner had not installed or implemented any additional security measures after the last business burglary in December 2016.

Man Wielding Gun & Hatchet Shot By Osceola Deputies

0

Osceola County, Florida – Osceola County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the Friendly Village Inn located at 2550 E. Irlo Bronson Memorial Hwy in reference to shots being fired from room 115. Callers reported three shots being fired from within that hotel room. Deputies arriving on scene attempted to call out the occupants of room 115 and the male occupant of the room, identified as Timothy John Wohlfelder D.O.B. 12/01/1980, opened the door and fired shots at Deputies, before retreating into the room. Timothy Wohlfelder opened the door again moments later and continued firing shots at Deputies across the parking lot in the direction of other hotel rooms, as the Deputies took cover. Timothy Wohlfelder retreated into the room one more time before exiting the room into the parking lot brandishing a pistol in one hand and a hatchet in the other hand. Timothy refused orders given by Deputies to drop his weapons. Due to the Deputies well-founded fear for their safety and the safety of the residents in the motel they fired shots striking the suspect three times.

There was one guest at the motel that was in a room located in the direction where the suspect was firing, that sustained a gunshot wound. That guest being treated at a local hospital and is in stable condition.

Timothy Wohlfelder was taken to Osceola Regional Hospital and is listed in stable condition. He has been charged with three counts of Attempted Murder on a Law Enforcement Officer. The investigation is ongoing, and the additional charges are pending. There were no Deputies injured during the incident. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting the investigation into the Deputy involved shooting.
