One Person Airlifted After Accident In Downtown Lake Wales

Lake Wales, Florida – On November 15, 2016 at approximately 1:58pm officers from the Lake Wales Police Department were dispatched to a single vehicle traffic crash in the parking lot of 100 W Stuart Ave. Upon arrival officers located the vehicle with substantial damage and only one occupant, the driver Brent Kyrk a 64 year old Lake Wales resident. Based on evidence left at the scene the investigation revealed Kyrk was driving a 2013 Ford Fusion on W Park Ave. Kyrk drove the vehicle into the parking lot of 29 W. Park Ave where he accelerated at a high rate of speed. Kyrk drove across the parking lot of 29 W. Park Ave, across W Stuart Ave, over the sidewalk, through a row of small bushes, into the parking lot of 100 W Stuart Ave, where he hit a curb, a decorative light post, and a palm tree before rolling the car over one full rotation. The vehicle Kyrk was driving came to rest on its tires in the parking lot of 100 W Stuart Ave.

It appears Kyrk suffered from a possible medical condition which caused the sudden acceleration and loss of control of his vehicle. Kyrk was treated on scene by emergency responders from the Lake Wales Fire Department and Polk County Emergency Medical Services. On the scene Kirk was unresponsive and in critical condition. Kyrk was airlifted to the Lakeland Regional Medical Center for treatment. Investigating officers notified his family of the crash and his condition. Miraculously, no other vehicles or pedestrians were involved in the crash. At this point in the investigation no charges have been filed.

This is an ongoing investigation and anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Officer Mary Jerome at (863) 678-4223 extension 521.
