Polk State Honors Orlando Nightclub Shooting Victims During Pair of Events

More than 150 students, employees and community leaders gathered at Polk State’s Lakeland and Winter Haven campuses on Monday to honor the victims of last week’s Orlando nightclub shooting.

“It is important that we take the time today to pause and reflect on what our core value of diversity means. ‘Inclusion’ means all of us,” said Polk State President Eileen Holden in her remarks to attendees gathered during the morning event at the Winter Haven Student Center.

“Those of us in education believe more than anything that when you can educate people and explain things to them, tolerance of many types of diversity becomes a way of life … Judging and hatred and violence are never the ways to anything. Acceptance, tolerance, patience and understanding of different lifestyles will make this world a better place.”

Congresswoman Wants To Drug Test The Rich – Introduces The “Top 1% Accountability Act of 2016.”

From NPR NEWS

The richest Americans take heavy advantage of the tax code’s many deductions. So Rep. Gwen Moore has an idea: She wants rich Americans to get drug-tested before they can get those tax benefits.

The Wisconsin Democrat is introducing the “Top 1% Accountability Act of 2016.” Its goal: require “drug testing for all tax filers claiming itemized deductions in any year over $150,000,” her office said in a press release.

Moore made it clear the bill is intended not so much as a statement about the rich but about the poor (the bill has little chance of actually going anywhere in a Republican-controlled House).

“It is my sincere hope that my bill will help eradicate the stigma associated with poverty and engage the American public in a substantive dialogue regarding the struggles of working- and middle-class families,” she said in the release.
