GaskinsWinter Haven, Florida – On Thursday, August 25, 2016, PCSO undercover Organized Crime detectives arrested 20-year-old Stanley Jarvis Gaskin of 3724 Avenue S NW in Winter Haven, and charged him with one count Possession of Alprazolam (Xanax) Without a Prescription, one count Possession of Meth, and one count Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, after the suspect sent messages to an undercover detective on Facebook and arranged to meet with the detective to sell him Xanax.

The following is an excerpt from the affidaivt:
The investigation began on 8/22/16, when Gaskin contacted me on a undercover fictitious account on Facebook. Gaskin messaged me advising that he had “bars.” Gaskin and I came to an agreement which resulted in Gaskin offering to sell the “bars” for $2 apiece. Gaskin and I agreed to meet at the Circle K in Winter Haven, Florida, to conduct the transaction. Gaskin and I communicated via Facebook messages, phone calls, and text messages throughout the investigation.

At approximately 2:26 hours, I arrived to the Circle K parking lot and contacted Gaskin via phone. I advised Gaskin the vehicle that I was driving at which time he began walking to my undercover vehicle. Detectives made contact with Gaskin as he approached my undercover vehicle. Detectives located approximately 11 white pills with the engraving G3722. The pills were identified to be Alprazolam 2mg. I located a clear plastic bag that contained a crystal like substance which was tested with field test kit number 15 which indicated a positive reaction for methamphetamine. The total weight of the methamphetamine was 1.6 grams.

During a search of the suspect’s vehicle, detectives located the following: a mini cross bow, an Airsoft BB handgun, an antique musket-style handgun, along with multiple wristwatches, a security badge, and a police campaign hat badge. Bryan Hartsburg (1)Frostproof, Florida – On 08/23/2016 the Polk County Sheriff’s Office was called to a home on Lake St. in Frostproof regarding an assault. According to reports the victim, Taylor Hartsburg 18, provided money to his uncle, Bryan Hartsburg 29 (the suspect), to purchase beer for the two of them to consume. The suspect purchased the beer and allegedly provided the beer to the victim, knowing he is not of the legal age to possess or consume any alcoholic beverage. The suspect and victim began consuming alcohol at approximately 4pm.

At approximately 10:10pm the victim was sitting in the living room of the residence when the suspect, began yelling about the victim for taking his beer out of the refrigerator. The victim, knowing the violent history of the suspect, walked to a bedroom at the rear of the residence, closed the door. A short time later the suspect allegedly entered the victim’s bedroom door by forcing the door open and was yielding a black handled kitchen knife, pointing the knife at the victim. According to reports the suspect allegedly began stabbing the victim with the knife, at which time the victim engaged in a physical confrontation in an attempt to defend himself and prevent the suspect from injuring him any further. At that time a witness entered into the bedroom in an attempt to pull the suspect off of the victim and prevent him from stabbing the victim further.

The victim exited the bedroom, at which time he and the suspect continued in their physical altercation down the hallway and into the living room. The physical altercation then proceeded back into the back bedroom and the suspect would not cease his attack on the victim. The witness stated they were calling 9-1-1, to which the suspect stated they did not need to call the cops, he was joking, and the victim would be ok. When the witness reiterated that they were calling for help because they feared the victim was going to bleed to death, the suspect stated they were not calling the cops, at which time the suspect allegedly ripped the home telephone cords out of the wall. The suspect’s actions prevented the communication to a law enforcement officer in reference to the commission of a crime. The suspect also took possession of the witness’s cell phone, which they share, in an attempt to prevent them from contacting law enforcement.

The victim began yelling that he had been stabbed and there was a large amount of blood coming from the back on the victims head. The victim exited the residence and began running to the neighbor’s houses to request they call 9-1-1. The first two residences the victim went to were vacant. Upon contact at the third residence the victim was able to ask that someone call 9-1-1 because he needed help.

The victim was stabbed in the back of his head, lower left side of his stomach, and lower left side of his back. The victim was airlifted to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.  The suspect left the scene before deputies arrived and they searched for suspect, but he was not apprehended at that time.

On 8/24/2016, at approximately 1245 a.m. A deputy was traveling South on Alt 27 towards Frostproof.  About a mile North of the city a white male ran out of the Orange groves and flagged down the deputy. The suspect advised the deputy he was the man they were searching for and he was just tired of running.

Hit & Run Driver That Killed Lakeland Man Eric Pope Found Guilty

From The State Attorney’s Office

Gary CarrollGary Carroll said there were a number of reasons he didn’t stop after striking and killing someone with his vehicle on the way home from a party.

In addition to claiming he hit an animal, to which there was no physical evidence, Carroll left the scene and removed the evidence of the crash from his vehicle.

After three hours of deliberation, the jury found Carroll guilty of leaving the scene of a crash involving death and destroying, tampering with physical evidence.

The 32-year-old victim was riding his bicycle on Reynolds Road about 1:20 a.m. on Feb. 22, 2014, when he was struck by Carroll’s vehicle and was thrown from his bicycle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Carroll testified Friday, claiming he was blinded by a light and swerved as a deer jumped into his path, causing him to hit it. As a result, he said, the hood of his truck was damaged, and the headlights were busted.
Carroll, 48, whose testimony changed based on what questions were asked, said he hit the deer on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, but he didn’t replace his hood and headlights for three days.

“If those headlights were knocked out by a deer on Thursday, wouldn’t he have fixed them right away?” Assistant State Attorney J.C. Hill asked the jury in closing statements on Friday.

“The deer didn’t happen. That’s why,” she said. “There was no damage. There was no deer.”
A Polk County Sheriff’s Office detective testified that law enforcement never found a deer and that the damage on Carroll’s truck was not consistent with hitting a deer.
Carroll eventually placed himself at the scene of the accident but defended himself saying he didn’t realize what he hit because the tint on his truck windows and the height of his vehicle skewed his perception.
Hill refuted Carroll’s claims by reminding the jury that the only tint on Carroll’s windshield was at the very top. She also showed them photos of the truck that indicated the victim’s head and shoulders would have been above the level of the hood.

As she picked up a paper bag containing evidence, Hill told the jury the victim would’ve been highly visible because he was wearing a reflective safety vest.

But the main reason Carroll said he didn’t stop was because he “didn’t think it was that significant.”
“He should have known, based on the fact that it was a big truck versus a bicycle, that there would be a significant injury or a death,” Hill said.

“There are innocent accidents that happen all the time, but you have to stop,” she said.
Carroll will be sentenced by Judge Sharon Franklin on Sept. 30.

The victim in this case was Eric Pope. He was the father of a beautiful little girl. Pope was wearing a reflective vest, was riding his bicycle, with lights on it, north on the east edge of Reynolds Road near Lisa Lane when he was struck from behind by Carroll. Pope was carried on the vehicle or thrown approximately 100 feet, and then landed in a ditch. “He was coming home from work. He was wearing a reflective vest and he had lights on his bicycle. This guy hits him in the middle of the night and leaves him dead on the side of the road. It infuriates us,” said Sheriff Grady Judd shortly after Carroll’s arrest. Carroll has a long history of arrests including shining a laser at the PCSO helicopter.

On one such text Culvahouse allegedly referenced a time when him and the victim were together in his truck. The victim had text Culvahouse to borrow $10. Culvahouse allegedly responded “I can. But u have to atleast let me feel it like I did that one day in the truck”. By Robert Blanchard

Winter Haven, Florida – Last week, local teens had a chance to fly one of several Syma X5c Drones inside a  large multi-purpose room at the Winter Haven Library.

Dubbed the Drone School; the Winter Haven Library hosted local teens for a class teaching flying skills and safety while operating a remote-controlled drone.

The room was separated by a net that kept the drones at a safe distance as they were being flown and protected the operators from errant drones that would lose control.

A pair of Library interns hosted the class and shared their skills with participants as they taught them control techniques on how to fly and basic flight operations. Some participants were even doing tricks with the drones by the end of the class.

Drone School is part of the library’s STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) Youth Series.

When she looked back up she saw Albert Tillman, a 67 year old Lake Wales resident, pushing his bicycle on SR60 in her lane of travel. Stewart was not able make an evasive move prior to colliding into Tillman. The collision resulted in Tillman and his bicycle landing several yards from the point of impact.
