The 4th Annual “Wings Over Winter” At Lake Wales Airport Starts Today Through Sunday

Lake Wales, Florida – Nearly 200 paramotor pilots and industry leaders from across the United States will attend “Wings Over Winter” to share and celebrate their love of flying paramotors this weekend. The 4th Annual Powered Paraglider Fly-in will be held at the Lake Wales Municipal Airport this year.

Admission for spectators is free. There will be food trucks and different vendors, including Red Bull. Attendees will get a chance to watch colorful gliders soar through the sky and what Aviator PPG is calling “kiting wars” where pilots fly their paragliders using the wind like a kite and see who can stay up the longest.

“We have pilots coming from all over the country,” said John Eisele, instructor at Aviator PPG. “The furthest one is coming from the United Kingdom. Paragliding is really big in Europe. Within the last five years with the technology, it’s really starting to gain steam here in the U.S.”

For the first time, the three-day paragliding event that begins this Friday takes place at the 200-acre Lake Wales Municipal Airport. The event hosted by Lake Wales-based Aviator PPG went on hiatus last year after being held near Chalet Suzanne for the first three years. Aviator is a dedicated paramotor sales and training facility. Aviator PPG was founded in 2012 by Eric Farewell, who was later joined by co-owner, Travis Burns, and instructor, Jon Eisele. Together, the group formed the Paradigm Aerobatic Team, which is set to perform in airshows around the country in the coming year, and continues to revolutionize the sport by growing a dedicated social media following on YouTube and Facebook. Aviator moved into its current state-of-the-art facility located on-site at Lake Wales Airport in July 2016.

“I think this will be the biggest event (at the airport) aside from the skydiving nationals,” said Eric Farewell, founder and co-owner of Aviator PPG. “It’s a spectacle; it’s family-friendly; I think it will really be a fun time.”

This Day in History – January 5, 1980 – The Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight” Becomes Hip-Hop’s First Top 40 Hit. Read About It On Daily Ridge.

Hip hop’s roots as a musical phenomenon are subject to debate, but its roots as a commercial phenomenon are much clearer. They trace back directly to January 5, 1980, when the song “Rapper’s Delight” became the first hip hop single ever to reach the Billboard top 40.

Prior to the success of “Rapper’s Delight,” hip hop was little known outside of New York City, and little known even within New York City by those whose orbits were limited to Midtown and Downtown Manhattan. The basic elements of hip hop—MCs rapping, DJs mixing and scratching, B-Boys break-dancing—were all in place by 1979, but you could not walk into a record store in Times Square and buy a hip hop album. Hip hop was something you had to experience live, in clubs and at parties in neighborhoods like the South Bronx and Harlem.

Grow Healthy In Lake Wales Receives License To Grow, Produce & Dispense Medical Marijuana. They Are Looking To Be Producing By This of Summer 2017

Lake Wales, Florida – After a years of legal battles Healthy Grow/ McCrory’s Sunny Hill Nursery was awarded low THC and medical marijuana license. It appears the license will allow them to grow, produce and dispense low THC cannabis and medical marijuana. The City of Lake Wales is one of the few Florida municipalities to not have issued a ban on dispensaries. Earlier today information was released on what Polk County doctors are trained to issue prescriptions for medical marijuana

The decision came down two days before Christmas. The Lake Wales company is now the seventh in the state to obtain the license. Grow Healthy lost out on its first bid for the license but ultimately challenged the decision and won.

Grow Healthy Holdings, LLC (GrowHealthy) currently an Atlanta based company purchased over 33 acres of property in Lake Wales, Florida to grow and process medical marijuana. That property is the old Sealy Mattress Factory on S. Acuff Rd. The nearly 200,000 square foot facility has had nearly a million dollars in renovations the facility has been transformed to support a large-scale growing operation that reported can provide medical marijuana from 2,000 – 12,000 patients.

The company has a few more steps in the works, and plans to be fully operational in their first phase by the summer of 2017.

Initially the company plans to deliver their product to their patients. A traditional dispensary is planned for the near future.

This Day in History: Golden Gate Bridge is Born

goldengatebridge1

This Day in History – January 5, 1933 – Golden Gate Bridge is Born – It was built to span across the San Francisco Bay. DailyRidge.Com News

On January 5, 1933, construction begins on the Golden Gate Bridge, as workers began excavating 3.25 million cubic feet of dirt for the structure’s huge anchorages.Following the Gold Rush boom that began in 1849, speculators realized the land north of San Francisco Bay would increase in value in direct proportion to its accessibility to the city. Soon, a plan was hatched to build a bridge that would span the Golden Gate, a narrow, 400-foot deep strait that serves as the mouth of the San Francisco Bay, connecting the San Francisco Peninsula with the southern end of Marin County.Although the idea went back as far as 1869, the proposal took root in 1916. A former engineering student, James Wilkins, working as a journalist with the San Francisco Bulletin, called for a suspension bridge with a center span of 3,000 feet, nearly twice the length of any in existence. Wilkins’ idea was estimated to cost an astounding $100 million. So, San Francisco’s city engineer, Michael M. O’Shaughnessy (he’s also credited with coming up with the name Golden Gate Bridge), began asking bridge engineers whether they could do it for less.Engineer and poet Joseph Strauss, a 5-foot tall Cincinnati-born Chicagoan, said he could.

Eventually, O’Shaughnessy and Strauss concluded they could build a pure suspension bridge within a practical range of $25-30 million with a main span at least 4,000 feet. The construction plan still faced opposition, including litigation, from many sources. By the time most of the obstacles were cleared, the Great Depression of 1929 had begun, limiting financing options, so officials convinced voters to support $35 million in bonded indebtedness, citing the jobs that would be created for the project. However, the bonds couldn’t be sold until 1932, when San-Francisco based Bank of America agreed to buy the entire project in order to help the local economy.

The Golden Gate Bridge officially opened on May 27, 1937, the longest bridge span in the world at the time. The first public crossing had taken place the day before, when 200,000 people walked, ran and even roller skated over the new bridge.

With its tall towers and famous red paint job, the bridge quickly became a famous American landmark, and a symbol of San Francisco.
