Lakeland Police Press Release

LAKELAND, FL (September 2, 2017) – On Friday, September 1, 2017 at approximately 10:38 pm, Lakeland Police officers responded to area of New Tampa Highway and Chesnut Road after a report of a possible shooting. Officers located Morris Parker, age 54, inside the residence at lot #1. Parker had been shot one time in the upper body.

Officers immediately set up a perimeter and began interviewing witnesses. The SWAT team and negation officers responded to the scene and blocked a portion of New Tampa Highway from Wabash Avenue to Chestnut Road for approximately six hours.

A witness working at the Citgo station, 2248 New Tampa Highway, stated she heard a gun shot and saw the suspect, Robert Van den Bosch, age 64, near the dumpster at the entrance of the mobile home park. She then observed Van den Bosch going back into the park. Officers on scene observed Van den Bosch inside of his trailer and evacuated neighboring residents.

Morris Parker was transported to Lakeland Regional Health in critical condition, but is expected to recover from his injuries.

While tactical officers were attempting to make contact with Van den Bosch they heard what sounded like a muffled gunshot sound coming from the residence shortly after midnight. Lakeland Police Department then requested assistance from the State Fire Marshall’s Office to utilize their Bomb Squad Robot. As a precaution for officer safety, the robot was placed inside Van den Bosch’s residence to identify his location. Through the Robot’s camera system, Van den Bosch was seen moving inside a back bedroom and a handgun was also observed laying on the floor. Again, officers issued verbal commands for Van den Bosch to exit the residence with no response. Chemical agents were then released into the residence and Van den Bosch immediately exited the home. Van den Bosch was taken into custody and later transferred to the Polk County Jail charge with Attempted Murder and Resisting Arrest without Violence.

Earlier in the week on Tuesday, August 29, 2017, Lakeland Police officers responded to 2245 New Tampa Hwy. in reference to a report of a possible Aggravated Assault. During the incident, Van den Bosch was alleged to have pointed a firearm at a victim and made threatening comments. Attempts were made to have Van Den Bosch exit his home but he refused to do so. After speaking further with the victim, it was determined that no charges would be filed and Van Den Bosch did not meet the requirements for a Baker Act.

Van Den Bosch has no criminal history and it is unknown what prompted his actions in these incidents.

PCSO Needs The Publics Help To find Hit-and-Run Driver

Update – From Polk County Sheriff

On 09/01/17 at approximately 1610 hours the juvenile victim, Trinity Hamilton, was walking westbound on the north side grass shoulder area of Idlewild Street, just west of the intersection of Leslie Drive in Lakeland (she was walking home after being dropped off by the bus, as she does every day).

While walking westbound, the victim was struck from the rear by what witnesses reported was a white pick-up truck.  The impact to the victim redirected her into a ditch area north of the roadway surface and resulted in serious injuries.

Witness, reported she was traveling westbound on Idlewild Street and observed a white colored pickup truck, with a black stripe down the center of the hood traveling behind her.  The witness advised that she then saw the truck impact the victim and noted that the truck never stopped and/or slowed to render any aide to the victim.  She reported she pulled off the side of the road and observed the truck flee the area at a high rate of speed northbound on East Lake Parker Drive.

Another witness, who resides in front of the crash scene, reported she heard the impact and upon looking out towards the roadway, observed a white colored, full-size, pickup fleeing the scene westbound on Idlewild Street.

Evidence at the crash scene revealed apparent blood near the westbound fog line.  Inspection of the crash scene further revealed that primary impact between the pickup truck and victim took place near westbound fog line.  Within the north side ditch, near the area of final rest for the victim, an exterior right side vehicle mirror was recovered.  Deputies noted that the mirror was face up with possible DNA on the glass surface. There also were several pieces of apparent automotive plastic recovered within a debris field in the grass shoulder area.

During the crash scene investigation, a residential security video located at on Idlewild Street (just west of the crash scene) was obtained and viewed.  Review of this video revealed an older model truck, white, Ford pickup traveling westbound on Idlewild Street during the time frames for the this crash.  Review of this video further identified the pickup truck had a black colored racing stripe down the hood, a silver colored toolbox in the rear tailgate area and tinted windows.  Observations of the pickup truck were consistent with the previously obtained witness statements.

At approximately 2054 hours, PCSO dispatch received a tip from a citizen in reference to a truck matching the description of the vehicle involved in the crash at 1609 East Lake Parker Drive with damage matching the description given on social media. Deputies went to 1609 East Lake Parker Drive, and confirmed the vehicle was the suspect vehicle.

Deputies made contact with the suspect driver, identified as William Hull. They read Hull his Miranda Warning and Hull stated he understood Miranda and agreed to speak with deputies about the crash.

During this interview, Hull advised that he was the operator of the pick-up truck and that he was involved in a crash on Idlewild Street.

He also stated he hit something on Idlewild Street but did not stop to see what it was.

Deputies’ inspection of the vehicle was consistent with the events of this crash. This damage included damage to the right front hood, front right turn signal lens and right passenger side.  Deputies further noted that the right passenger exterior mirror was missing and was consistent with the mirror found at the crash scene.

During the crash, the victim received serious injuries, which included a fractured jaw and a dislocated pelvis.  She was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa Florida for treatment.

Investigation of this crash determined that the suspect failed to stop and render aid to the victim and/or failed to report this crash to Law Enforcement.  It is further determined that if the suspect would have stopped at the crash scene, the victim would have been visible from the roadway, due to the recent clearing of the ditch area and low vegetation.  During this incident, the suspect also attempted to conceal the vehicle and damage within a fenced back yard of his mother’s residence.  A neighbor reported that the suspect always backs the truck into the fenced yard and on today‘s date, he did not.   Deputies determined that the suspect’s actions were an attempt to conceal the vehicle and damage from witnesses and law enforcement.

The suspect was transported to the Polk County Jail and charged with:

Leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury (F-2)

Tampering with evidence (F-3)

Trinity is expected to fully recover from her injuries

PCSO Traffic Unit Investigating Hit-and-Run in Lakeland – Seeking the Public’s Help

The Polk County Sheriff’s Traffic Unit is investigating a hit-and-run with serious bodily injury to a child that occurred in Lakeland this afternoon, and is seeking the public’s help to identify and locate the suspect vehicle – we have photos of the vehicle taken just prior to the crash.

Around 4:00 p.m. this afternoon, Friday, September 1, 2017, an 11-year-old girl was walking westbound off the roadway, off the shoulder, of Idlewild Street near Leslie Drive in Lakeland, as seen by a female motorist (witness) who drove past the child. The witness then observed in her rearview mirror an older model white pickup truck approach the child, veer off the roadway onto the shoulder, and strike the child. The child went into the ditch on the side of the road, and the truck went back onto the roadway and behind the witness’ car.

The witness observed the driver of the suspect truck to be a white male in his 30s, with brown hair, wearing tinted glasses. As she prepared to slow down and follow him to get a better description for law enforcement, he abruptly sped off in the opposite direction, and onto Lake Parker Drive, heading southbound. The witness immediately then turned around and went to render aid to the victim.

The child was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Tampa and is there now with her parents. She has serious injuries.

The suspect vehicle is described as an older model two-door white Ford F-150, with what appears to be a black stripe or black tape on the hood. He was traveling between 30-35 MPH. The truck may be missing the passenger side mirror, and/or have damage to the front passenger headlamp area.

If anyone has information about this hit-and-run or sees the suspect truck, they are urged to contact the Polk County Sheriff’s Office at 863-298-6200.

Polk County Fire Rescue Paramedics Deployed To Texas

Bartow, Fla. (August 31, 2017) — Two Polk County Fire Rescue paramedics are deployed to Texas to assist with rescue and recovery efforts taking place due to Hurricane Harvey. Captain Tony Damiano and John Mikula are a part of Florida’s Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT), which is part of the National Disaster Medical Services.

Damiano is serving with FL-2 DMAT and Mikula is on FL-6 DMAT. They will spend a minimum of two weeks providing medical care and assistance to those affected by the catastrophic storm. “We’re like a mobile hospital,” said Mikula. “We have doctors, nurses and paramedics on our team.”

Both paramedics joined DMATs after Hurricane Katrina. This is Mikula’s eighth deployment and Damiano’s fifth. Mikula was deployed on Wednesday and Damiano the day before.

“At 4 p.m. on Tuesday I was given notice to deploy and I was on a flight out of Orlando at 7:30 p.m. My go-bag is always packed and ready,” said Damiano. “This is the norm for us; we are to be wheels up in about three hours.”

Damiano has been with Polk County Fire Rescue since 2004 and Mikula since 2005.

Polk Business Man and Crew in Texas to assist with rescue and relief.

By Kip Kirchberg

Watching the news, it is very heartbreaking to see all the devastation that has taken place in Texas due to Hurricane Harvey. The Hurricane Harvey dropped in excess of 51” of rain in a very short period. This unleashed flash flooding that caught many residents off-guard. Those that were able to flee the area did so. However, many more were not so fortunate and were stuck to fend for themselves and fight to survive.

Jim Vaughan

Sitting watching the news local Lake Wales Business owner and Houston, Tx Native Jim Vaughn felt a strong tug on his heart to do something. For Jim it was so heartbreaking to see all the devastation knowing he had friends and family in the area affected by the storm. Finally, the urge to do something over took Jim.

Jim and his team made the decision to head to Texas on Sunday morning and provide any help they could to those in need. Jim and his crew (Willie, Scott, Manel, Kathy, and Jim) loaded 4 trucks, 4 airboats, and a semi in preparation for their trip. By 8pm Sunday evening they said their goodbyes to their families and headed to Texas to help those who were stranded and needed rescued.

Upon arriving in Texas Jim and his team had to work with the Coast Guard to get a fairy to boat them and their gear through the flooded area and to a safe zone where they could stage their gear. Jim was able to contact a few friends in Texas and ended up at a local friend Jesse and Brenda’s home.

Jesse and Brenda provide dinner and shelter for crew.

Jesse and Brenda fed Jim’s crew and provided them a place to stay for the night. The crew definitely needed a good rest and time to work with local organizers who could guide them to the areas where their help was needed the most.

Jim had a boat and man for each boat, however, the coast guard required every boat be manned with at least two crewmembers.  This is when some of Jim’s friends and local people jumped at the opportunity and assisted Jim and his crew further by riding along in the boats to assist with efforts. To ensure the crews gear on land stayed safe some local residents stayed with the crews truck and semi’s so they were protected from looters.

Jim and crew headed out first thing the next morning and started their rescue efforts. It did not take long for them to fill their boats with people who needed help. The people they rescued were very thankful and welcomed him and his crew with opened arms. Jim and his crew continue to run rescue missions based on a daily Intel briefing they receive from local coast guard and rescue organizers. Although rain has stopped flooding conditions will continue to be a challenge and potentially affect new areas.

It is hard getting information back from Jim and his crew as they are very busy rescuing those in need. To be honest Jim is not a person who likes to receive any attention. He is a behind the scenes type person that just makes things happen. Please pray for Jim and his crew as they continue their efforts in Texas.

You can follow some of their rescue efforts on their Facebook page here.

ATM Skimmer Suspects Caught on Camera

On August 30, 2017, Citizen’s Bank reported an ATM skimming device had been installed on the ATM at their branch located at 23725 US27 in Lake Wales. The bank became aware there was an issue after they were contacted by clients reporting fraudulent activity on their accounts. Citizen’s bank immediately began looking into the reports of fraud and discovered two suspects had placed a skimming device in their ATM on August 25th at approximately 8:30am. The video from the ATM shows the two suspects taking part in installing the device. As seen in the video the device is a slim sleeve which slid into the card slot and the suspects then fastened or tightened it with tools. The video shows the same two suspects return to the ATM on August 27th at approximately 10:13pm to remove the device.

Detective Aubrey Davis is working with the staff of Citizen’s Bank to determine the number of victims and to recover any evidence the suspects may have left behind.

It is likely this skimming device collected personal banking information from numerous people over the course of the weekend. The Lake Wales Police Department encourages everyone to regularly check their bank statements and report any suspicious activity to your bank and local law enforcement. The video from the ATM captures very good footage of the suspects while they are installing and removing the device. If anyone recognizes these suspects please contact Detective Aubrey Davis at (863) 678-4223 extension 276 or Heartland Crime Stoppers at (800) 226-8477.
