Hundreds Arrested In Polk County Prostitution/Human Trafficking Sting

Polk County Sheriff Press Release

Sheriff Grady Judd will brief the media this afternoon about “Operation No Tricks, No Treats”, in which 277 were arrested for crimes related to human trafficking and online prostitution.

In two undisclosed locations in Polk County, beginning on Tuesday, October 10th, through Monday, October 16th, 2017, Polk County Sheriff’s undercover detectives, along with detectives and investigators from other law enforcement agencies, conducted a week-long undercover investigation focusing on human trafficking and targeting online prostitution, and arrested 277 suspects.

Fifty-one of the arrests were for those who advertise as prostitutes online. 209 of the arrests were those who solicited undercover detectives who posted ads posing as prostitutes. Seventeen other arrests were made of those who derive proceeds from prostitution, or other offenses.

The undercover operation included detectives and agents from the following agencies: Haines City P.D.; Lakeland P.D.; Lake Wales P.D., and Winter Haven P.D.; working in conjunction with members of the State Attorney’s Office.

During the operation, undercover detectives posted fictitious ads or profiles on various social media platforms, websites, and mobile phone applications, posing as prostitutes or those soliciting prostitutes. Some of the detectives responded to profiles and online ads posted by prostitutes. Despite the repeated warnings and media coverage of past operations, numerous suspects responded to the ads and drove to one of the two different undercover locations to engage in illegal prostitution.

“We are committed to fighting human trafficking, by arresting those who engage in prostitution and trying to identify human trafficking victims. It’s no secret…you need to stay out of Polk County if you’re going to commit crime” – Grady Judd, Sheriff

215 suspects drove to Polk County from various counties across Florida; or were visiting Florida from: Alabama, California, Delaware, Georgia, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.

Woman Leaves Fifteen Year-Old Injured In Roadway

Winter Haven PD Release:

Thirty-three year-old Stephanie Stinson of Winter Haven missed her chance to be mother of the year after she took her 15 year-old daughter to purchase drugs and wound up leaving the scene of a crash with injuries.

On October 15, 2017 at approximately 1:37 a.m., officers were called to the scene of a hit and run traffic crash on 6th St. SW that injured 15 year-old Austin Lopez of Winter Haven. Stinson had told her 15 year-old daughter that she wanted to purchase some marijuana and asked her daughter to set up the transaction. The daughter contacted someone she knew who met them at a laundromat located at 834 6th St NW in Winter Haven.

Stinson paid $20 for a bag of marijuana and expected change in return. When she didn’t get her change, Stinson attempted to block the vehicle from leaving. Lopez, who was getting inside of the vehicle on the passenger side, was struck when Stinson rammed her blue Dodge Avenger into the vehicle. The impact launched Lopez over the hood of the vehicle where he landed in the roadway. He suffered significant injuries including facial fractures and other broken bones. Lopez was air lifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Stinson stopped briefly to pull off a piece of her vehicle that was dragging and both she and her daughter saw Lopez injured in the roadway. As they left, Stinson’s daughter called 9-1-1, but they did not stay at the scene. A piece of Stinson’s car was lodged in the silver Chevrolet she had struck and police were able to determine the ownership by the vin number marked on the vehicle part. Initially, police were unable to locate Stinson’s vehicle; however her estranged husband called police at 7:06 a.m. to report that he found his vehicle with damage and Stephanie had sent him text messages stating she had struck a vehicle and a person earlier.

On October 15, 2017,  at 8:09 a.m. Stinson and her daughter reported to the Winter Haven Police Department to give statements to the incident. Stinson was taken into custody and charged with Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving Injury (F.S.S. 316.027(2)(A) F3 and Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor (F.S. 827.04(1) M1.

LAKE WALES MEDICAL CENTER SENDS RELIEF TO PUERTO RICO

Lake Wales, FL – Lake Wales Medical Center coordinated a supplies drive to help residents of Puerto Rico recover from the devastating impacts of Hurricane Maria.

“Our area and our employees were still cleaning up from Hurricane Irma, but when we saw the devastation in Puerto Rico, we knew we had to help,” CEO Rebecca Brewer said. “Several of employees are from Puerto Rico, and many still have family there.”

Executive Assistant Evelyn Rivera-Miranda spearheaded the efforts, and it didn’t take long for supplies to begin pouring in.

“Several employees posted about it on Facebook, and before long, we were getting donations brought in from the community, in addition to what our staff was bringing in,” Brewer said. “It was remarkable to see the whole community come together. We had to find a storage room to start stacking it all in.”

The hospital itself also donated several pallets of water. On Thursday afternoon, Oct. 12, a group of employees gathered to bring all the supplies from the storage room and load it into a truck and trailer. The supplies filled the cab and bed of the truck, as well as a flatbed trailer. The supplies were sent to Bandaid for Puerto Rico.

Lake Wales Medical Center is a 160-bed acute care hospital, located at the intersection of SR 60 and 11th Street in Lake Wales. With more than 500 employees and 60+ active staff physicians, the hospital has been serving the medical needs of the community since 1928.
