Tech Tuesday: Cyber Security Growth

Cyber Security Growth

By Kip Kirchberg

The global Cyber-security market is set to grow from its current market evaluation of $120 billion per year to well over $300 billion per year by 2024. The Cyber-security market is drastically increasing among organizations in an effort to minimize Cyber-security risks and to meet Cyber-Security insurance requirements.

Unfortunately, the additional money being invested into Cyber-Security by organizations does not necessary mean that their Cyber-Security stance has improved. Many organizations attempt to improve their Cyber-Security stance and protect their organization by layering several technologies. In many cases the additional layers simply create more complexities and ultimately become ineffective.

Cyber-Security is a complicated web that involves solutions that are expensive and, in many cases, requires the expertise of a dedicated Cyber-Security professional to effectively deploy and maintain. The biggest risk you or your organization can take is believing that you will not become a target or fall victim to a cyber-attack.

The good news is there are some basic things you and your organization can do to better secure your environment.

  1. Enable two factor authentication on all cloud services
  2. Practice good Password Hygiene. Eight character passwords is not enough. Migrate to at least a 12-character password and force special characters, numbers, and the inability to reuse passwords in your environment.
  3. Utilize a password safe to centrally store passwords. Many services like dashlane and last pass allow you to use their app to fill passwords. By storing passwords you can create a unique and challenging password for each account. Please don’t do what appears to be the trend for most and use the same password for all your accounts.
  4. Lock your devices and enable auto lock when not in use. You wouldn’t leave your car unlocked with the keys in the ignition at a Walmart. So don’t leave your electronic devices unlocked and vulnerable.
  5. Back up your devices and pc’s and for the sake of sanity please verify the backups are completing successfully. You would not believe how many times I have had to assist an organization with an issue only to learn they were not successfully backing up their systems. This can be disastrous to say the least.
  6. Be cautious of the information you provide on social media. Don’t give out your address, phone number, social security number, or anything else that is personal. Believe it or not I have seen people posts pictures of credit cards on social media sites. Not very smart.
  7. Don’t trust everything you see in email. If you get a request from a financial institution or a request to verify your account password in email be cautious. Many hackers use phishing techniques to lure you to provide sensitive account data. When in doubt open a new browser and go to the site manually.
  8. Do not access sensitive accounts or data while connected to free wifi. While it may be tempting remember nothing is free. And free wifi is a hot spot for hackers to harvest data and use later for an identity or credit card attack.
  9. Change account passwords at least quarterly. I know this may seem tedious but trust me. You never know when a site may fall victim to a cyber attack. Always better to be safe than sorry.
  10. Most of all use common sense. If it smells like a duck, looks, like a duck, quacks like a duck, then it’s probably a frog.

Again a lot of cyber security risks can be mitigated with simple steps to ensure your digital hygiene. If you or or organization is looking for a team to review your cyber security posture feel free to reach out. I can surely connect you with the right team of professionals to do the job. From a basic analysis to cyber security insurance review to a full blown pen test I have a resource for you.

Main Street Winter Haven Celebrates Fourth Annual Craft Beer Crawl

Main Street Winter Haven Celebrates Fourth Annual Craft Beer Crawl

by James Coulter

For the past 90 years, Wauchula State Bank has been offering community-style banking at its family-owned business throughout the state of Florida; and for the past three years, it has been offering such quality customer service in Downtown Winter Haven.

Wauchula State Bank always does its best to reach out and support the community. One way it does this is by participating in community events such as the Craft Beer Crawl on Thursday evening.

The bank was one of 35 businesses that participated in the annual event, which allowed attendees to peruse businesses downtown to sample craft beer and appetizers.

During its involvement that evening, Wauchula Community Bank brought in two other local businesses, The Catering Company, and Twisted Soap, to offer their craft beer samples, appetizers such as candied bacon, and even a sample of their merchandise.

Amy Thompson, Branch Manager, and her staff have been involved with the event ever since it started three years ago, around the same time that they first opened their doors. Being able to participate has allowed them to become better acquainted with the local community and potential customers.

“It has been fantastic,” she said. “We love helping the community and all the business owners. We just love seeing the interaction with the community.  It is just great.”

Local businesses throughout the downtown area, especially those along Central Avenue, remained open late for the third consecutive year to participate in this year’s Craft Beer Crawl hosted by Main Street Winter Haven.

From local restaurants such as Tempo 1930, Fire Resturant, and El Olivio, to local shops such as Sugar and Spice Bakery, Oasis Catering Company, and The Shop, more than 35 businesses participated in this year’s event, making it the largest, said Bailey McDaniel, Assistant Director.

“This year is our biggest beer crawl yet,” she explained. “We have 35 different businesses that are participating and that is 15 more than in years past. So it has been more attending, more beers, more food, more exciting.”

While many businesses participated in the event directly, others stayed open late to benefit from the extra crowd and potential customers.

Rocco’s Downtown, a new burger joint operated by the owner of The Burger Bus food truck, decided to use the day as a soft opening for their restaurant, which is set to celebrate its grand opening next week.

Rocco Monteleone, who had previously owned Carolina Burgers and the Burger Bus, expected his new place to be busy, and both lunch and dinner that day certainly brought in more customers than he had expected, he said.

“I think it is great,” he said. “There are a lot of people downtown tonight. A lot of business and all the bars are busy.”

For $25, attendees at the event could purchase a wristband, glass, and map that would allow them to visit the different participants and sample their beer and appetizers. This year, for $5, a special designated driver wristband was sold, allowing attendees to sample the food without having to sample the drinks.

Even though pre-sale tickets did not sell as much, as the rainy weather all that week most likely dissuaded some people, this year sold more tickets than ever before, and thus brought in even more people than before, McDaniel said. In fact, this year’s event more than exceeded expectations, and set the bar for next year so high that it almost seems unimaginable how those expectations can be topped, she said.

“It is always tough to beat next year,” she said. “I would like to thank the businesses that have participated and to thank everyone who joined us. I think it is great to see so many people interested in their community and learning more about their downtown.”

Thunder Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Celebrates Ground Breaking Ceremony For New Dealership Facility

by James Coulter

Thunder Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram recently broke ground for a new state-of-the-art facility that will more than double the dealership’s size and selection when it opens next year.

The current facility, constructed in 1989, stands at 13,000 square feet. The new facility, which will replace the old facility at the same location, will be more than twice the size at 36,000 square feet.

Aside from housing a larger vehicle selection, the new facility will also expand services to customers with its new service and parts departments. These departments will include three service lanes, 23 repair bays, and an inventory of stocked parts worth an estimated $850,000, according to a press release.

The state-of-the-art facility will not only offer better service to customers, but a much more hospitable work environment for its employees, especially it service technicians, explained Richard Bishop, General Manager.

“We will be modern, new, upgraded, and air-conditioned,” he said. “In today’s marketplace, when you have 20 to 25 technicians trying to work in Florida heat in a metal enclosure, it is just catastrophic, so a new store will have fans and air-conditioning and more windows.”

The new facility is being constructed to help meet greater demand from customers, offering them a larger selection of vehicles and services. The refurbishment is part of a move to help enhance the image of Jeep, which has become the number one brand name in the world next to Coke, Bishop said. As such, the new facility will feature a separate showroom for Jeep vehicles.

“The other dealerships are trying to individualize and make a separate showroom for just Jeep customers,” Bishop said. “We will be the first one to build that new image. So our store will be one store, but one store will exclusively for Jeep, and that is a Chrysler first.”

Thunder Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram officially kicked off the construction of the new building with a groundbreaking ceremony hosted on Wednesday morning by the Bartow Chamber of Commerce. The ceremony drew in a large crowd of business owners and city officials, including Bartow Mayor Leo E. Longworth.

Bishop was quite impressed by the turnout, which more than exceeded his expectations. He had never been involved with a groundbreaking ceremony before, so he did not know exactly what to expect from it. As such, the turnout more than impressed him, he said.

“There were quite a few people here,” he said. “I lost track of how many came in, but a lot of people were serious.”

Thunder Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram has previously been under the management of its original owner, Tom Edwards, whose family had owned it for the past 41 years. Wanting to retire, Edwards sold the store to Bishop two years ago since December.

“I’m a Florida boy who was stuck in Georgia and I wanted to come to Florida, so this was an opportunity for me and we took advantage of it,” Bishop said.

Bishop learned that the store had outgrown its current building, so he decided to expand his business by acquiring an additional eight acres of land with plans to construct a newer, larger facility, he said.

“What I expect to get out of it is a good relationship with the community and city because we are all one,” he said. “If we are serving the community right, then you build right, and give want they are supposed to have. Don’t make them leave to another place to do it. It is like a hotel or restaurant. If you don’t have hotels or restaurants, they will go to another town and do it. That is my opinion, so this investment was the right thing to do.”

Thunder Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram is located at 1425 West Main Street, Bartow FL, 33830. For more information, call 863-533-0793, or visit their website at: https://www.thunderchrysler.com/

Take A Gander At RVs At The New Gander RV In Bartow

Take A Gander At RVs At The New Gander RV In Bartow

by James Coulter

When Kiara Hawkins received a flyer about the grand opening of Gander RV in Bartow, along with the many activities provided at the event, she thought it would be a decent outing for her and her 8-year-old daughter, Jacayla.

The two of them enjoyed being able to take a close look together at the different RVs on display, and Jacayla even had the opportunity to have her face painted like the character on her shirt, Princess Poppy from the animated movie Trolls.

Young Jacayla was even able to try her hands at shooting a BB gun at the inflatable shooting range being provided that day by In-Gauge Of Polk County. She was initially shy about the experience, but afterward, she very much enjoyed it, her mother said.

Not only was she able to shoot a gun at the inflatable range several times, but she was also lucky enough to win the raffle ticket drawing for a pink toy BB gun.

“We decided to try the event and see if she was comfortable with a gun,” Hawkins said. “At first, she was scared. But since we have been here, she has shot eight different times. She was drawn to win, and she won a BB gun.”

Jacayla was one of many lucky young people who were lucky enough to win a prize during the raffle drawings hosted on Saturday during the grand opening of Gander RV in Bartow.

The grand opening allowed visitors a close look at the new business and merchandise. They could also engage in many activities, from face painting, corn hole tossing, live musical entertainment, and free food such as hot dogs, chips, soft drinks, and snow cones.

In Gauge of Polk County assisted with the event by providing their inflatable shooting range, where guests young and old could take aim and shoot a BB gun at targets. In-Gauge also offered several raffle drawings for toy BB guns, including the famed Red Ryder BB Gun as made famous in the classic movie, “A Christmas Story.”

Kenneth Henson is the father of two boys who were fortunate to win the drawings that afternoon. His youngest son, John, 10, won a BB gun, while his oldest son, William, 12, won a scooter. Henson took the opportunity to peruse the many RVs on display at the facility. While he’s still searching for what he’s looking for, he certainly appreciated being able to visit the new business.

“It seems like a really nice place,” he said. “I really love the layout they have here, and the selection that they have.”

Formerly Camping World, the facility opened under its new name, Gander RV, earlier in May. While it still offers Camping World brand RVs and gear, it also offers fishing, hunting, and other outdoor merchandise not previously offered, including guns, ammo, kayaks, and paddleboards.

“We are hoping with the additional stuff in stock it will bring more people in and we can cater to a larger crowd,” said Raynette Alexander, Commerce Manager.

The new business still has the same management, including their general manager, Mark Gerdich, who had previously left before returning. Customers old and new can expect to receive the same level of quality customer service as they have come to expect, if not more so, Alexander said.

“We do have a lot of old customers. We try to take care of them and their needs and keep them happy,” she said. “Come visit. We’d love for people to come out and see us.”

Many new visitors already took the opportunity during the grand opening to take a gander at what Gander RV had to offer, and they were not disappointed at what they saw.

Randy Stucky came out from Winter Haven to take a look at the RVs. He is considering purchasing an RV for himself. His needs are simple enough: two bunk beds for his boys and a separate bed for himself. He loved being able to peruse the shop, and his boys especially had fun with the many activities, including the shooting range.

“It is a really nice shop,” he said. “It has just about anything you would need for fishing, hunting, and camping.”

Gander RV is located at 7400 FL-60, Bartow, FL 33830. For more info, call 866-906-9517, or visit their Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/GanderRVBartow/

Motorcyclist Arrested After Leaving the Scene of A Crash Involving a Pedestrian

Release by Winter Haven Police Department:

Motorcyclist Arrested After Leaving the Scene of A Crash Involving a Pedestrian

Twenty year-old Charles Kennedy (DOB 6-6-99, 2002 Amesbury Dr., Auburndale) is facing felony charges after he struck a pedestrian on Saturday in the intersection of 6th St NW and Ave. M NW in Winter Haven.

On 6/22/19 at approximately 9:05 p.m., 62 year-old Robert Marshall of Winter Haven was in the crosswalk walking west at 6th St NW and Ave. M NW when the light changed to green for 6th St traffic.
Kennedy, who was riding a green 2015 Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle heading north on 6th St., entered the crosswalk striking Marshall and knocking him to the ground. Marshall suffered significant injuries, though they were non-life-threatening. At this time, Marshall remains in the hospital in serious, but stable condition.

Kennedy did not stop and according to witnesses sped off continuing northbound. Parts of the motorcycle were left behind including a mirror and two pieces of a fairing. The serial number from the mirror matched a 2013-2016 Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle.
On Sunday, 6/23/19 at approximately 6:45 p.m., a green Kawasaki Ninja was located behind the Just

Move Gym in Spring Lake Square. The motorcycle had damage and no tag attached. The VIN number came back as registered to Charles Kennedy of Auburndale.
Approximately three hours later, Charles Kennedy reported his 2015 green Kawasaki Ninja stolen to Auburndale Police. Winter Haven officers went to Kennedy’s house to interview him regarding the found motorcycle. Kennedy told officers he last saw his motorcycle on 6/22/19 in front of his residence with the key in the ignition.

Officers were able to determine that Kennedy had gone to his girlfriend’s Winter Haven residence that same evening and left just prior to the crash being reported. He later called his girlfriend telling her he wrecked his motorcycle and then told her, “I did not see him,” referring to the person he had hit.
During the interview, she told officers he asked her to pick him up behind Just Move where she saw Kennedy take a broken fairing off the motorcycle, take the tag off and place them both in her car.
Kennedy was located at his Auburndale home and arrested. He was booked into the Polk County Jail for Leaving the Scene of a Crash with Injuries, F3 (F.S.S. 316.027(2)(A); Tampering with Physical Evidence, F3 (F.S.S. 918.13); Knowingly Giving False Info to LEO, M1 (F.S.S.

Thirty Three Yr. Old Lakeland Man Killed In Motorcycle Crash

Polk County Sheriffs Office Press Release

Excessive speed appears to be the cause of a fatal one-vehicle crash that occurred Saturday, June 22, 2019, at 11001 Combee Road in Lakeland, in which a 33-year-old motorcyclist was killed.

Deputies from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office were notified of the crash at around 6:26 p.m., along with Polk County Fire Rescue.

The motorcyclist, Travis Lester, of Lakeland, was the only person involved in the crash. He was transported to Lakeland Regional Health where he was pronounced deceased.

According to the preliminary investigation, Lester had been travelling east on Jungle Street at a high-rate of speed, when he activated his brakes and caused a skid of approximately 300-feet. The bike crossed-over Combee Road and struck a parked vehicle at 11001 Combee Road.

The impact moved the unoccupied 2008 Dodge Nitro about three feet, and Lester was ejected from the bike. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
