There are some things we would rather not talk about. There are issues we are unwilling to discuss. We consider them “off-limits,” and when they come up, we try to change the subject as quickly as possible:

• Absolute truth         • Purity
• Heaven and hell     • Generosity
• Miracles                  • Race
• Repentance            • Gay marriage
• Holiness                  • Politics

But we live in a world that is too full of difficult challenges and controversial issues for us to refuse to engage.

The Scriptures were given so that Christians could be “thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:17 NIV). One of those “good works” is the ability to show a sincere inquirer that God has provided wise answers and reliable guidance not only for how to get to heaven, but also for how to respond and live effectively in this confused generation.

In Untouchables, Jack Hilligoss demonstrates how God’s Word never hides from any subject but, rather, handles these sensitive and intimidating topics with grace and truth. In doing so, he aims to equip the body of Christ with practical and profound Christian responses to these “untouchable” topics.

Polk State College Jazz Jam
Polk State College Jazz Jam

Local talents Victoria de Lissovoy and Charlie “Topp” Hines will host a free jazz jam session for musicians from 5 to 8 p.m. on Jan. 21 at the Polk State Lake Wales Arts Center. A Polk County favorite, de Lissovoy studied music at Northwestern University and regularly performs across Polk County. She will share the stage with Hines, who honed his trumpeting skills at Boston’s Berklee College of Music. de Lissovoy and Hines have previously collaborated for the College’s Jewel of the Ridge Jazz Festival.

The jazz jam session is open to musicians who would like the chance to play with de Lissovoy and Hines. Polk State Lake Wales Arts Center Director Osubi Craig said he is excited to see what transpires at the event. “We already know that Victoria and Charlie are immensely talented individuals, but it will be neat to see who else comes out to play. Polk County has lots of talent just waiting to be discovered — and that could very well happen on this evening,” he said.

The Polk State Lake Wales Arts Center is located at 1099 State Road 60 East.
