Man Eluded Law Enforcement by High Speed Chase To Avoid Going Back To Jail

“On 03/10/2016 at approximately 7:37 a.m. Polk County Deputies responded to
Combee Rd North in Lakeland, in reference to a suspicious vehicle parked in the reportee’s yard. Deputies made contact with a white male later identified as Tad Ray Whitworth, 02/12/1966. Mr. Whitworth was seated inside the vehicle acting agitated and rocking back and forth, stating he did not want to go back to jail. Mr. Whitworth refused to exit the vehicle. Deputies attempted to make entry into the vehicle, at which time he fled the scene in the vehicle. The deputies on scene pursued the vehicle north on Combee Rd. The vehicle is described as a 2001 Chevy Silverado 1500.

Mr. Whitworth traveled at a high rate a speed attempting to elude marked patrol cars with their emergency lights and sirens activated for approximately 14.5 miles.   Mr. Whitworth drove through the front gate of a residence near S.R 33/Commonwealth Ave North and Deen Still Rd in Polk City. Mr. Whitworth then drove west around the residence. Deputies arrived on scene and blocked the entrance/exit to the residence. Mr. Whitworth, still attempting to evade law enforcement, drove back east through the pasture. Mr. Whitworth intentionally drove his vehicle through a fence, ditch, and struck a vehicle parked on the side of the roadway occupied by four people (the vehicle was pulled over, yielding to law enforcement vehicles). The suspect’s actions were intentional and committed while in the act of committing a felony.

The victim’s truck, a 2013 White Ford F250, suffered minor damage to the front passenger side bumper and fender. The damage is estimated in excess of $1000.00. The victims were not injured but were jolted and moved about inside the vehicle due to the suspect intentionally striking them with his vehicle.

The suspect then fled south bound on S.R 33 until he exited the roadway and intentionally drove through numerous fences and private property. The suspect eventually made his way to Campbell Rd where he was taken into custody.

The suspect intentionally used his vehicle during the commission of a felony to strike the aforementioned truck occupied by the four victims. The suspect is currently out on bond for animal cruelty.”

Whitworth was booked into the Polk County Jail for four counts Aggravated Battery, one count Felony Fleeing to Elude, one count Resisting Arrest, one count Criminal Mischief, one count Culpable Negligence.

Lake Wales School Bus Driver and Attendant Arrested for Child Neglect

brownsimmons
On Wednesday, March 9, 2016, PCSO Special Victims Unit detectives arrested Polk County School bus driver, 51-year-old Gale Brown of Lake Wales, and Polk County School bus attendant, 57-year-old Gwendolyn Simmons of Lake Wales, and charged each with two counts Negligent Child Abuse (F-3).

According to the affidavits, a 13-year-old special needs student was left on the bus on two separate occasions, after dropping off all of the other children at Our Children’s Academy in Lake Wales.

On March 2, 2016, the victim was sleeping in the 6th seat from the rear of the bus on the driver’s side, while Simmons (the bus attendant) sat behind him. Brown drove the bus and children to Our Children’s Academy, and all of the children except the victim disembarked. Simmons walked up to the front of the bus, not noticing the victim was still in his seat, sleeping. Brown then drove and parked the bus on Mobley Street in Lake Wales, turned the bus off, and both Brown and Simmons exited the bus without checking to ensure the bus was empty. The victim woke up about 15 minutes later, climbed out of the driver’s side emergency exit window, and then hitch-hiked and walked approximately 30 miles to his home in Davenport.

On March 8, the victim was again sleeping in his seat, not noticed by either Brown or Simmons, who left on the bus on Mobley Street in Lake Wales. The victim again forced open the bus door, and hitch-hiked and walked home.

The bus is equipped with a “child reminder system” which requires the driver or attendant to push a button at the rear of the bus to turn it off – the purpose of the alarm is to ensure the driver or attendant check the bus for children prior to leaving the bus. The bus is also equipped with a digital video system that recorded both incidents.

In both incidents, both suspects admitted to having a student de-activate the child reminder system before they arrived at the school, and admitted that they did not check the bus for students before leaving it parked all day. Neither of the suspects was aware that the victim was left unsupervised on the bus. Both suspects were arrested and booked into the Polk County Jail.

“This was entirely avoidable – the Polk County School Board is committed to keeping our children safe, equipping school buses with the latest technology to ensure children are not left behind. These two suspects completely disregarded all safety measures, and endangered a 13-year-old special needs student – there is absolutely no excuse for this type of neglect.” –Sheriff Grady Judd

Winter Haven Woman Arrested For DUI Manslaughter In Tuesday Night Crash

Susanna Baldwin charged with DUI & Vehicular Manslaughter
Susanna Baldwin charged with DUI & Vehicular Manslaughter

The PCSO Traffic Unit is investigating a two-vehicle crash that occurred on Winter Lake Road in Winter Haven last evening, March 8, 2016, resulting in the arrest of one of the drivers for DUI Manslaughter*, Vehicular Homicide*, and DUI with Property Damage.

The crash occurred around 11:35 p.m., in the westbound lanes of Winter Lake Road near the intersection of Thornhill Road. A black 2003 Infiniti being driven by the suspect, 30-year-old Susana Baldwin of Winter Haven, crashed into the rear of a black 2003 Mitsubishi being driven by 29-year-old Danny Miller of Lakeland, causing the death of Miller’s passenger, 28-year-old Kellie McCain of Lakeland. Miller was treated and released from the hospital with minor injuries. Baldwin was treated at the scene for minor injuries, and placed under arrest. None of the parties involved were wearing seatbelts.

During the initial contact with Baldwin a strong alcoholic beverage odor was smelled from her breath along with slurred speech and bloodshot eyes. Baldwin also had a difficult time standing, but this could have been due to a knee injury sustained during the crash. According to the affidavit during the post-Miranda interview Baldwin stated she was the operator and sole occupant of her vehicle. She stated she had been at the Caribbean bar on Lake Howard Dr in Winter Haven across the street from Old Man Franks where she had consumed one beer at approximately 10pm and consumed no other alcohol. Baldwin stated she left the bar at approximately midnight and was headed home. Field sobriety tests were performed which Baldwin failed and she was placed under arrest. Baldwin was transported to Polk County Jail and received a consensual breath sample following all standard procedures. The results of this breath test show Baldwin at a .164 and .148 nearly three hours after the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.

Cooking on The Ridge: Classic Carrot Cake

Ingredients
2 cups granulated sugar
1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
4 fresh whole eggs
2 cups pastry flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
3 cups raw finely ground carrots
4 ounces finely chopped walnuts
1 1/2 pounds powdered sugar
12 ounces room temperature cream cheese
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
2 ounces room temperature margarine

Directions
Cake Ingredients: Frosting Ingredients:
Preheat oven to 300 degrees F.

In a mixing bowl, mix sugar, vegetable oil, and eggs. In another bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. Fold dry ingredients into wet mixture and blend well. Fold in carrots and chopped nuts until well blended. Distribute batter evenly into 3 (9-inch) cake layer pans, which have been generously greased. There will be approximately 1 pound 5 ounces of batter per pan. Place in preheated oven and bake for 50 to 60 minutes. Cool layers in pans, for approximately 1 hour. Store layers in pans, inverted, in closed cupboard to prevent drying. Layers must be a minimum of 1 day old.

To remove layers from baking pan, turn upside down, tap edge of pan on a hard surface. Center a 9-inch cake circle on top of revolving cake stand. Remove paper from bottom of layer cake. Place first layer, bottom side down, at center of cake stand. With a spatula, evenly spread approximately 3 1/2 ounces of frosting on the layer. Center second layer on top of first layer with topside down. Again with a spatula, evenly spread approximately 3 1/2 ounces of frosting on the layer. Center third layer on top of second layer with topside down. Using both hands, press firmly but gently, all layers together to get one firm cake. With spatula, spread remainder of frosting to cover top and sides of cake. Refrigerated until needed. Display on counter or cake stand with a plastic cover.

Filling and Icings:

In a suitable bowl of large mixer, place powdered sugar, cream cheese, vanilla, and margarine. Beat at second speed until thoroughly blended. Hold refrigerated and use as needed.

Update on Last Nights Accident on SR 60 W just East of Evergreen Drive in Lake Wales

The PCSO Traffic Unit investigated a serious bodily injury crash in Lake Wales last evening. Preliminary information is as follows:

Around 11:25 p.m. on Monday, March 7, 2016, a Chevy Equinox belonging to 21-year-old Marley Finley of Chicago, IL, had run out of gas in the westbound lane of SR 60, just east of Evergreen Drive in Lake Wales. She and her uncle, 29-year-old David Bryan of Bramblewood Drive in Lake Wales, began to push the disabled vehicle in the westbound lane.

The flashers on the SUV were engaged, and there was a raised concrete curb that prevented them from pushing it off the roadway completely – their goal was to push it to a nearby driveway. Finley was pushing the vehicle from behind, and Bryan was at the open driver’s door, holding onto the steering wheel.

A 1998 Honda Civic being driven by 37-year-old Oliver Simons Jr. of Seward Street in Tampa was heading westbound on SR 60 at what is estimated the posted speed limit of 45 MPH. Simons did not see the SUV or Bryan until the last minute, and braked in an attempt to avoid a collision. The Civic struck the SUV on the left rear, then glanced off and struck Bryan. Finley pulled Bryan off the roadway and called for help.

Bryan was transported to LRHMC where he is in critical condition. Finley was not injured.

Simon was wearing his seatbelt, and showed no initial signs of impairment. He was cooperative with the responding deputies. During the investigation, deputies located three large bags and 8 small bags of marijuana in his vehicle, and he was subsequently arrested for Possession of Marijuana With Intent to Sell, Maintaining a Vehicle for Drug Use, and Possession of Paraphernalia.

SR 60 was reduced to one lane of travel for approximately 5 hours during the investigation.  The investigation is ongoing.
