The Lake Wales Police Department is attempting to identify the suspects in these photographs. On June 2, 2016 at approximately 3:00pm the unknown female suspect entered Beall’s Outlet, located at 126 SR60 E. She selected and concealed several items in a large black purse and then exited the store without paying for the items. When she was stopped by Loss Prevention she resisted and was assisted by the white male suspect she referred to as “Austin”. They fled from the store in a black or dark colored SUV, possibly a Toyota.

It’s That Time Of Year Again! With Summer At Our Doorstep and School Almost Out

It’s that time of year again! With summer at our doorstep and school almost out, it’s time to start making plans.

 

Typically most children will spend their time at the park, swimming pool or beach, and often in front of the TV playing video games for most of their vacation.  It also means they will spend less time engaged in valuable educational pursuits like reading, math and even problem solving skills.

 

The Public Education Partnership of Winter Haven and LRC of Polk County have partnered to offer three summer camps in Winter Haven which includes a Science camp, an Art & Music camp as well as a Sports and Fitness camp. All the camps will include a math and reading component as well in their curriculum.

 

The LRC website states “PEP Summer Camps offer elementary students a fun way to gain important skills in reading and math as well as sports & fitness, science and art & music. Camps will include hands-on, high-interest activities as well as interactive teaching. If you want your child to have fun while reviewing in order to prevent summer learning loss, then PEP Summer Camps are for you. Select 1-3 weeks, and choose from two Winter Haven locations. Space is limited; early registration is encouraged!”

 

Cost is $25.00 per week with Scholarships also available.

 

Available for school age children K-5 (Elementary)

 

There are two locations in Winter Haven.

 

Winter Haven PEP Center at 203 Avenue R NE and  Inwood Elementary School at 2200 Avenue G NW.

 

Camps run from June 13-30, Monday-Thursday, from 8:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m

If a Bear Comes into Your Yard

If a bear is in your yard, make sure that 1) you are in a safe area, and 2) the bear has a clear escape route, then 3) SCARE THAT BEAR Adobe PDF!

You want to let the bear know it is not welcome in your yard, so from a safe location, scare it away by yelling, banging pots and pans, using an air horn, or anything else that makes a lot of noise. The use of paintballs, bear spray, and sling shots are also allowed under FWC guidelines.  Once the bear leaves, take a look in your yard to ensure there is nothing that might be attracting the bear Adobe PDF.  If you see a bear is eating something on your property, take note of what it is and secure it once the bear leaves (Learn how at Living with Bears).

To keep bears away, make sure you follow this advice:

  • Secure household garbage in a shed, garage or a wildlife-resistant container (like abear-resistant container Adobe PDF or caddy Adobe PDF).
  • Put household garbage out on morning of pickup rather than the night before.
  • Secure commercial garbage in bear-resistant dumpsters.
  • Protect gardens, apiaries, compost and livestock with electric fencing.
  • Encourage your homeowners association or local government to institute ordinances on keeping foods that attract wildlife secure.
  • Feed pets indoors or bring in dishes after feeding.
  • Clean grills and store them in a locked, secure place.
  • Remove wildlife feeders or make them bear-resistant Adobe PDF.
  • Pick ripe fruit from trees and remove fallen fruit from the ground – bears love fruit!
  • Screened enclosures ARE NOT SECURE and WILL NOT keep bears out.

Making these changes around your home and encouraging your neighbors to do the same will discourage bears from associating your community with an easy food source. Remember – if your neighbors don’t become bear smart, too, the bear can tear up their yard…before coming for yours.

It is illegal to intentionally place food or garbage out that attracts bears and causes conflicts. Anything that attracts dogs, cats or raccoons will attract bears, too!

The Lakeland Junior Bassmasters youth fishing club will be hosting the Cutting Edge Challenge on the Winter Haven Chain of Lakes this Saturday.

 

Bass Masters

Youth anglers will be casting off at 6:00am from the boat ramp at Lake Shipp and weighing-in at the Harborside Restaurant at 2435 7th St SW in Winter Haven at 2:00pm.

 

Membership is open to anyone between 8 and 18 years of age. Youngsters not able to participate will be treated to Kids Time from 11am -1pm with games and contests including target casting, fastest reel-in time as well as getting a chance to learn the basics of fishing.

Polk County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide deputies are currently conducting a fatal crash in the area of 14th Street NW and Highway 17 in Fort Meade.  Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

The incident, a train versus a semi, occurred at approximately 2:34 pm.  There is one confirmed fatality.  Details about the crash with victim information will be released as soon as it is available.

Baked Buffalo Chicken Dip

Ingredients

 3 cups diced cooked rotisserie chicken
2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
3/4 cup hot pepper sauce (such as Frank’s RedHot®)
1/2 cup shredded pepper Jack cheese
1/2 cup blue cheese dressing
1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese
1/2 teaspoon seafood seasoning (such as Old Bay®)
1 pinch cayenne pepper, or to taste
2 tablespoons shredded pepper Jack cheese
1 pinch cayenne pepper, for garnish
Add all ingredients to list

  • Prep 15 m

  • Ready In 30 m

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
  2. Combine chicken, cream cheese, hot pepper sauce, 1/2 cup pepper Jack cheese, blue cheese dressing, crumbled blue cheese, seafood seasoning, and cayenne pepper in a large bowl.
  3. Transfer chicken mixture to a 9-inch round baking dish and sprinkle with 2 tablespoons pepper Jack cheese.
  4. Bake until lightly browned, 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from oven and garnish with cayenne pepper.

If they continue to gain access to human provided foods (e.g., garbage, pet food, bird seed) they can be become food conditioned and habituated. Bears that begin to exhibit those behaviors can become a public safety risk and potentially killed by wildlife officials. Remember “A FED BEAR IS A Dead Bear.” If a bear is seen in your yard, reinforce their natural fear of humans by making loud noises from a secure location (e.g., yelling, using car or air horns, or banging pots and pans together).

Winter Haven Man Facing Serious Charges After Attempting to Take Officers Car and Grabbed for Officers Gun

A Winter Haven man is facing serious charges after he attempted to take an officers car and grabbed for the officers gun over the weekend.

Thirty-one year-old Andrew Allen Bailley (DOB 10-4-84, 1538 Foxridge Rd. SW, Winter Haven) is charged with Carjacking w/o firearm (F1), Aggravated Assault on Law Enforcement Officers (F2), two counts of Battery on Law Enforcement (F3), Burglary of Conveyance (F3), Resisting Officer with Violence (F3) and Battery (M1) after a fight with his brother turned violent towards police.
On 6-5-16 at approximately 3:15 a.m., Lt. Kari Gaskin responded to a disturbance call at 1538 Foxridge Rn SW in Winter Haven. Lt. Gaskin approached the home and knocked on the door. When nobody answered, she walked back to her marked patrol vehicle in an attempt to get further information regarding the call. As she approached her vehicle, two people were walking in the roadway towards her from several houses down. The female, 18 year-old Julie Davis was walking in the roadway with 31 year-old Andrew Bailley. Davis identified herself to Lt. Gaskin as the person who called in the disturbance. According to Davis, she stated that Bailley and his brother were “tripping” on acid and they got into a fight.
Lt. Gaskin was standing at the open door to her patrol vehicle, which was running, while speaking with Ms. Davis. Lt. Gaskin asked Bailley to step back and he complied. During the conversation with Davis, Bailley once again stepped towards LT. Gaskin. Lt. Gaskin once again told Bailley to step back and he immediately went behind Lt. Gaskin and shoved her away from the vehicle jumping into the driver’s seat.
Lt. Gaskin reached into the vehicle and turned the vehicle off just as Bailley reached for the gearshift. Bailley grabbed Lt. Gaskin’s right arm in an attempt to pull her towards him. Gaskin pinned Bailley’s shoulder to the seat and Bailley stated he was going to take her gun and reached for Gaskin’s gun, which was in the holster on her duty belt. She grabbed his left arm and leg and pulled him out of the vehicle, falling to the ground. Bailley immediately jumped back up and charged at Lt. Gaskin with clinched fists and yelling.
At this time, Bailley’s brother, 21 year-old Jedaiah Bailley (same address) came out of the home and Andrew immediately lunged at his brother. Lt. Gaskin deployed her department-issued Taser, but Bailley pulled the prongs out. Once again, Andrew Bailley defied commands to get on the ground and he charged at Lt. Gaskin, yelling that he was going to get her gun. Lt. Gaskin maneuvered her way behind Bailley and deployed the Taser once again gaining compliance over Bailley. By this time, backup officers were on scene.
While attempting to handcuff Bailley, he continued to resist officers. Emergency Medical Services was called to transport Bailley to the hospital and while at the hospital, Bailley grabbed another officer’s tactical vest several time trying to pull items from the vest.
Bailley was treated at Winter Haven Hospital and transported to the Polk County Jail.
Lt. Kari Gaskin is 35 years-old and started with the Winter Haven Police Department in August 2005.
