Polk County Sheriff’s Office Press Release

On Saturday, January 18, 2020, the PCSO Traffic Unit investigated a car versus pedestrian crash in Lakeland during which the pedestrian died. Preliminary information is as follows:

PCSO received a 911 call around 8:00 p.m. from the area of New Tampa Highway, 75 yards west of Gentry Circle. The pedestrian, 56-year-old Jeffrey Phillips who lives in the M&M Mobile Home Park at that location, was walking to the Sunoco across the highway when he entered into the path of a 2013 four-door Hyundai Sonata being driven eastbound by 30-year-old Ashley Farrow of Winter Haven.

Watson Clinic Urgent Care South Facility Celebrates Grand Opening

by James Coulter

Whether you are suffering from a cold or a flu, whether you have a minor injury or a major headache, if you are living in South Lakeland, the new Watson Clinic facility will allow you to have your urgent care needs met.

The Watson Clinic Urgent Care South Facility recently celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon cutting celebration hosted by the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce.

The new facility will provide South Lakeland with urgent medical care, ensuring local families, especially of low income, can have their immediate healthcare needs met, with or without the need of an appointment, even after hours and on weekends, and especially through the convenience of same-day online appointment scheduling.

The facility offers services including on-site x-ray, ultrasound, laboratory work, and proffesional care provided by board-certified specialists. Helping provide this care will be more than 220 nurses and physicians, along with several breakthrough scientific and technological innovations.

“These tools make diagnostics more speedy and accurate and allows us to delve into your complex illnesses that traditionally are out of reach at walk-in care facilities,” explained Dr. Steven Achinger. “That is why urgent care is an appealing option. It offers what you need when you need it without the high cost and inconvenience of a traditional emergency center.”

Watson Clinic has been serving the healthcare needs of the local community for more than 80 years. What has allowed the non-profit organization to remain as relevant for that long has been its commitment towards 100-percent physician-led, physician-directed medical care, Dr. Achinger said.

Since 1941, Watson Clinic has expanded its services and outreach, having grown to more than 220 board-certified physicians, 1,700 employees, 40 medical specialty representatives, and 18 locations across Polk, Pasco, and Hillsborough County, Dr. Achinger said.

“The popularity of our urgent care location made clear that the community appreciates high-level expert care and advance diagnostics on a time frame that meets their schedule,” he said. “We are going to strive to reduce healthcare costs in our community. We believe that this will help people encourage business growth and help struggling families who are burdened with the high cost of healthcare. We are thrilled to introduce urgent care south to this community to do our part to make low cost healthcare a little more available in the city of Lakeland.”

Mayor Bill Mutz commended the facility for providing quality medical care for the local community. Such a commitment ensures that the community remains a prospective location for new businesses and residents, he said.

“Sometimes we have people worry if we have too many urgent care centers,” he said. “I don’t think this is a place where you have to worry about having a monopoly. This is a place where you want to make sure people have great access to being able to come. So from a personal standpoint, as well as a city standpoint, we are thrilled to have [the clinic] here to be able to have this urgent care expansion and see how it helps with all of our urgent care needs within our community.”

Watson Clinic South is located at 1033 N Parkway Frontage Rd, Lakeland, FL 33803. For more information, call 863-647-8011, or visit https://www.watsonclinic.com/locations/1600-lakeland-hills-blvd-lakeland-fl.html

Davenport Woman Arrested For Aggravated Child Abuse And Manslaughter in Death of 13-Month-Old Baby

PCSO Press Release:

On January 15, 2020, PCSO Homicide detectives arrested 35-year-old Neidy Mendez-Gudine of Davenport for one count aggravated child abuse (F-1) and one count manslaughter (F-2) in the death of a 13-month-old baby.

According to the affidavit, on Friday, January 10, 2020, deputies and PCFR personnel responded to a Davenport residence in response to an unresponsive 13-month-old boy who was reported by Mendez as “choking and not breathing.” She told the first responders that she placed the baby on her bed in her bedroom and left the room to care for other children. Approximately 15 minutes later she went to check on him and found him laying on the floor unresponsive. The baby was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando with skull fractures and subdural hemorrhaging. He was declared brain dead and succumbed to his injuries on January 11, 2020.

Doctors at the hospital verified that the baby’s injuries were traumatic and not consistent with falling off a bed or falling down. Dr. Vera Volnikh performed an autopsy on the baby, during which she noted subdural hemorrhaging at the top of his skull and spine, and in his neck muscles, consistent with being shaken. He also had two fractures on his skull. His cause of death was ruled head trauma, and the manner of death, homicide.

Based on the evidence, medical reports, and autopsy report, and Neidy Mendez-Gudine’s statements, and the statements provided by the other occupants of the residence, the suspect was the only person with the victim at the time the injuries were inflicted upon him. A witness’ statement indicated he thought Mendez threw the victim.

This is the second horrific incident in a matter of weeks where an adult has killed a baby for whom he or she has been charged with caring. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who are suffering these unthinkable losses. We will do everything in our power to ensure this suspect is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and that she never has access to children again.” – Grady Judd, Sheriff

Suspect Shot & Killed By Polk Deputy, Female Accomplice Also Shot After Pair Committed Multiple Car Jacking’s & Ran Over Plant City Police Officer

0

Polk County Sheriffs Office Press Release

Around 1:00 p.m. this afternoon, Wednesday, January 15, 2020, PCSO received a BOLO out of the city of Plant City that a white male and white female suspect, both with warrants, fled from the scene of an armed carjacking in a stolen silver Toyota Tacoma. The BOLO contained information that the suspects were armed and dangerous, and fled Plant City after running over a Plant City Police Officer. The female suspect had also been shot by a Plant City Police Officer while the truck she was in with her boyfriend was fleeing.

Further information was received that the suspects committed a second carjacking north of Plant City, in the unincorporated area, and were then in a blue Toyota truck.

At 1:40 p.m., a PCSO Deputy Sheriff who was in the Bailey Road area searching for the suspects, spotted the stolen blue truck and then encountered both suspects in another stolen vehicle, a black Volkswagen, within a trailer park on Bailey Place, just off of Bailey Road in the Willow Oak (Mulberry) area.

While attempting to place the female suspect under arrest – 36-year-old April Thompson (DOB 4/14/83) – the male suspect got out of the front passenger seat of the car, and went around to the other side to get into the driver’s seat. The male suspect ignored the deputy’s commands to stop, and attempted to flee with April in the backseat. While the Deputy was trying to stop the male suspect from driving away, he heard a female voice scream, “He’s got a gun!” several times, and observed the suspect – 31-year-old Aaron Phillips (DOB 5/20/88) – reach down towards the floorboard. Deputy Sheriff Andre Jackson, in fear for his life, shot the suspect, and the suspect is deceased.

April Thompson, who was in the backseat of the stolen vehicle, was also shot. She was taken to a local hospital to be treated for her two gunshot wounds (one to the leg by Plant City P.D. and one to the stomach by PCSO). She is in stable condition, and is being held on her multiple felony charges until she is taken to the Polk County Jail.

There is a handgun visible on the floorboard of the VW car that Phillips is in. The car will be taken to be processed by PCSO Crime Scene this evening.

Both of the suspects already had out-of-county warrants for their arrests before today’s crime spree began. Aaron Phillips has Hillsborough (PCPD) warrants for armed false imprisonment, kidnapping, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and grand theft. He just got out of state prison after having served 4 years and 10 months. April Thompson has a Polk County warrant for VOP (grand theft and burglary), and a Hillsborough warrant for VOP (dangerous drugs). She’s been in the Polk County Jail and her mugshot can be found on our website in the jail inquiry section.

Please refer any questions about the crime spree and officer-involved shooting in Plant City to PCPD, and the second carjacking that occurred in Cooper Road in unincorporated Hillsborough County to HCSO.
