Lake Alfred Brings Local Eateries Together For Fifth Annual Hoedown

by James Coulter

Lake Alfred is a small dot on the map between Auburndale and Haines City. However, this small town has been growing with more new businesses and eateries opening up in recent years.

Last Friday, many of these local eateries had the chance to showcase their great eats, from pasta to shrimp, during the town’s Fifth Annual Hoedown.

Hosted at the Lions Club Park House, this event brought together several local eateries such as Cornerstone Grill and Gary’s Oyster Bar to serve some of their best dishes, from pulled pork to baked ziti and even shrimp cocktails.

Gary Oyster Bar provided an open bar with shrimp and cocktail sauce, while a local Mexican eatery provided a create-your-own-taco bar with all of the classic Mexican fixings.

Aside from being able to sample some of the great food served within their city, attendees could also place bets on silent and live auction items as provided by local businesses, as well as listen to live music by a local band.

Marylen Anderson, Executive Director Chamber, has been residing within the city since 1955. She has been working at the Chamber for the past two and a half years since retiring from State Farm.

As a local chamber member and resident, Sanderson wants to see her small hometown grow. The town has already seen some exceptional growth in recent years with new businesses arriving and opening up shop.

“We try to get food from across the city,” she said. “I have seen businesses come and go. There are a lot of new changes with new businesses coming in. We would like to see our town become more than a spot on the map.”

This year, the event started slower than last year. Last year managed to sell more tickets than any other time, and this year had more people buying tickets than before, Anderson said.

As for what she personally enjoys most about the food: “I think it is a toss-up between the music and food. I like the food.”

Lamb Of God Lutheran Church Hosts Annual BBQ Fundraiser

Lamb Of God Lutheran Church Hosts Annual BBQ Fundraiser

by James Coulter

For the past 20 years, Lamb Of God Lutheran Church has been hosting its annual dinner fundraiser to raise funds for a local charity that benefits chronically-ill children and their families. This year, they traded a taste of Italy for a taste of the good old south with some great tasting barbecue.

In previous years, the church has served spaghetti and meatballs during its annual dinner fundraiser. This year, they decided to switch things around with some barbecue. They served dinner meals with either pulled pork or smoked chicken, along with all the “
fixins” with baked beans, cole slaw, and dinner rolls.

Helping them serve and prepare their food was a local caterer, Smokin Ox Premium BBQ. Clayton Tyler. Clayton’s mother attends the church and has been serving there as a cleaning lady for the past 25 years. Both he and his mother appreciates the service that the church provides to the local community, which inspired him to assist with this year’s dinner.

“We want to do some good for the community and give back,” he said. As for what makes his barbecue especially good, he attributed that to “not cutting any corners. We do not serve any leftovers. Everything is fresh and made from scratch. We cook with love.”

Pastor Joe Conner has been with the church for nearly 27 years. For the past 20 years, his church has partnered with the Sunshine Foundation, a local non-profit organization that assists chronically-ill children and their families at the local Dream Village in Davenport.

The proceeds from this annual dinner go towards their foundation, which, in the spirit of Make A Wish, allows them to fulfill the dreams of the chronically-ill children as they undergo life-saving treatment.

“They have come to truly believe and support our mission,” said Wanda Curtis, President of the Sunshine Foundation, about the church. “All the money raised goes directly into our program, and it gives the extra money we need.”

This year, more than 180 advance meal tickets were sold. The church receives plenty of help and support from their parishioners, many who volunteer at the dinner or help sell tickets prior to the event.

“I enjoy the camraderie,” Pastor Conner said. “The congregation has been very supportive.”

GFWC Four Corners Junior Women’s Club Hosts 11th Annual Charity Fundraiser

GFWC Four Corners Junior Women’s Club Hosts 11th Annual Charity Fundraiser

by James Coulter

For the 11th consecutive year, the General Federation Of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) Four Corners hosted its annual charity fundraiser with fashion, food, and overall fun.

More than ten models took to the stage that afternoon during the fashion show to showcase the latest fashions as provided by Chico’s Lakeland.

Prior to the fashion show, attendees packed the main room of the Lake Eva Convention Center for a delicious lunch catered by Carrabba’s Italian Grill from Kissimmee.

Outside within the atrium, more than a dozen vendors showcased their wares, ranging from handmade jewelry and handbags to painted gourds and scented candles. Local vendors that day included SS Jewelry, Sunshine Salts and Soaps, and Dressed Up Beads.

Serving as a guest speaker was Chanda Bennett, comprehensive planning administrator for the office of planning & development and long range planning. She discussed the economic and residential development planned for Northeast Polk County.

With more than 700,000 residents, Polk County is the ninth largest population and fourth largest population in square miles. Its population is expected to grow to one million in the next 25 years.

Northeast Polk County is the fastest growing part of unincorporated Polk County. As such, Bennett expects to see much economic and residential growth in that area, especially with upcoming developments. Currently, the area is receiving multifamily developments at 15 to 20 units to the acre, with the average density about 4 units to the acre, she said.

Helping to facilitate this year’s event were more than two dozen businesses throughout Polk, Orange, and Osceola County, including shops from the Orlando Outlet Mall and Disney Springs. Major sponsors this year included Jarrett Gordon Ford, KellerWilliams Realty At The Lakes, and The UPS Store.

The event serves as the annual fundraiser for GFWC Four Corners, a local chapter of GFWC, which, according to Wikipedia, is a “a federation of over 3,000 women’s clubs in the United States which promote civic improvements through volunteer service.”

For more than 100 years, the nationwide federation has united women’s clubs for the purpose of promoting volunteer work throughout local communities. The Four Corners chapter, true to its name, services the four counties of Polk, Osceola, Orange, and Lake.

“Our mission is to help the members of our local communities through volunteer work,” explained Lexi Comstock, GFWC Four Corners president. “[Our annual fundraiser] is a wonderful way to showcase our club, and it is a wonderful way to showcase the people who do volunteer work.”

Each and every year sees the fundraiser improve and grow, with this year’s venue providing for much more people. This year’s event drew in so many attendees that it became sold out, Comstock said.

“We have people who come back year after year and spread the word,” she said. “It is a fun day for women to get out and socialize. It is our primary fundraiser. It is for the good, and that is what we love about it.”

Lake Wales Police Investigating Crash Involving Motorcyclist on Highway 27

On Tuesday February 11, 2020 emergency personnel responded to a vehicle crash on US Highway 27 just South of Mountain Lake Cutoff Road. The crash involved a 1996 Harley Davidson motorcycle being driven by Timothy David Mason age 61 of Lake Wales and a 2019 Ford F-150 being driven by 51 year old Kenneth Edwards of Babson Park.

The preliminary investigation suggests that Mason was observed stopped at the traffic light on Highway 27 and Washington Avenue in the Northbound lanes. As he sat at the light witnesses observed him appear to work on the motorcycle. When the light turned green Mason continued North with the normal flow of traffic. As he continued north witnesses observed Mason begin to lean over, appearing to adjust or work on the motorcycle again. Within moments for unknown reasons Mason lost control of the motorcycle at which time he and the motorcycle slid along the roadway for approximately 300 feet. Mason was then ejected from the motorcycle where he stopped. The motorcycle continued to slide north until it struck Edwards vehicle. Edwards was not injured and stopped immediately.

Mason sustained life threatening injuries during the crash and was airlifted to Lakeland Regional Health.

Both directions of Highway 27 were effected as a result of the crash investigation.

If you have any information regarding this crash please contact Officer Sean Robertson or Officer Andrew Elrod at the Lake Wales Police Department at 863-678-4223.

Joker Marchant Stadium Flips Out Over Kiwanis Pancake Festival

Joker Marchant Stadium Flips Out Over Kiwanis Pancake Festival

by James Coulter

Baseballs are usually tossed on Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland. But last Saturday saw pancakes being tossed during the Kiwanis Pancake Festival.

For the past 62 years, the annual pancake festival has served as a major fundraiser hosted by the Lakeland Kiwanis Club. The festival had previously been hosted in Downtown Lakeland, but had since moved to its new location at Joker Marchant Stadium.

At 7 a.m. sharp, volunteers from the Kiwanis Club and eight other local charities began flipping pancakes and serving themto hungry attendees. Their pancake breakfasts also offered juice, milk, coffee, and “the best sausages in town”, according to Kathryn Koch, Kiwanis President.

Aside from eating a pancake breakfast, the event also allowed attendees to listen to live music, receive free balloon animals, and meet and greet costume characters as provided by the local organization, Costumes For Charities.

Proceeds from the fundraiser is divided evenly among eight local charities, including Big Brothers – Big Sisters, Camp Fire Sunshine Central Florida, Early Learning Coalition of Polk County, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Girls, Inc., Idols Aside Ministries, KidsPACK, LoBo Ranch, and Parker Street Ministries.

“Last year, we made more than 3,000, and we wish to match or exceed it,” Koch said.

Koch has been involved with the Kiwanis Club for nearly 30 years. There is nothing she loves more than being able to dress up as a stack of pancakes and interact with the people who make this event happen.

“The volunteers and the charities that are here for the event are great,” she said. “It was a little chilly earlier this morning for a start, but then it started picking up.”

This Barbecue Team Won First Place At Smoke On Water For Second Year In A Row

This Barbecue Team Won First Place At Smoke On Water For Second Year In A Row

by James Coulter

For the past two years, the Hot
Wachulas, the Bartow-based barbecue team, has been attending Smoke on the Water, the annual barbecue competition in Winter Haven that benefits the Boys & Girls Club of Winter Haven.

And for the past two years, the Hot Wachulas has won first place in the overall barbecue category within the proffesional team division.

“I am super stoked,” said Matthew Barber. “This is one of the toughest contests in Florida, and being able to win it two years in a row is a great feeling.”

Barber runs his own barbecue company, where he sells his own homemade rubs and sauces. These items sets himself apart from the competition, and it’s these homemade specialties that allowed him to win first place, not once, but twice.

Hot Wachulas also won first place in brisket and chicken and fourth place in pork. Being able to win so many categories in what he considers to be “the toughest BBQ competition” was quite the stroke of luck, he said.

“This is a great cause and a great charity, and anything we can do to support the city and the boys and girls club is great,” he said.

The Hot Wachulas was one of the more than two dozen barbecue teams, both proffesional and backyard, that competed in the 16th Annual Smoke on the Water BBQ Competition in Winter Haven.

Hosted at the Boys & Girls Club of Winter Haven, the annual fundraiser serves as a charity benefit for the local non-profit organization. Proceeds go towards funding the after school programs and other services provided by the club.

Festivities kicked off on Friday and continued on the following Saturday, where the winners of the competition were announced during the awards ceremony. Awards were presented in several categories (pork, chicken, brisket, ribs, and general) and two divisions (backyard and proffesional).

Winning the backyard division was Smokin Ash. This was the first time that the backyard barbecue team had attended the event, so winning first place was quite the surprise, said leader Blake Wood.

Wood had attended several other competitions before. He was inspired to start competing by his parents. While he certainly owes his success to his own hard work, he attributes his win to none other than his family, faith, and good friends.

“Just being able to see friends and family,” was his favorite part of the event, he said.
