Varsity Basketball Player Invited to Bahamas Tropical Shootout Tournament to Represent Team USA

Varsity Basketball Player Invited to Bahamas Tropical Shootout Tournament to Represent Team USA

By Allison Williams

Jameria Robinson is a Freshman at Lake Wales High School and plays for the girls’ varsity basketball team.

Robinson has been playing basketball since she was in 5thgrade. She started playing for the Lake Wales Police Athletic League (PAL), which is a basketball organization for children ages 5-14. Her father was a basketball player during his high school years, and her cousin Willie Grant also played. He spends a lot of his spare time with her, training her in the sport.

While playing PAL Basketball, Robinson picked up the sport naturally. “I noticed I was pretty good and decided to keep at it,” she said.

Robinson continued to play with the Lake Wales High School team and her talent was recognized by a scouting staff who reviewed her playing statistics and rankings, and then invited her to play in the Bahamas Tropical Shootout Tournament, set to take place in July 2020. The tournament is hosted by 365 Sports. Players, both male and female, from across the US are invited to play in this tournament.

Robinson will be sporting her USA uniform under Team Florida and put her skills to the test as she competes against teams from the Bahamas and also other US teams.

With travel comes expenses. Robinson and her family will be fundraising so that she and her mother can travel to the tournament in the Bahamas this summer.

“As a parent it makes me proud to see her accomplish so much,” Lakendra McMath, Robinson’s mother said. “She’s so dedicated to the sport and to her grades. I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

McMath’s advice to other young kids and athletes is: “Study your skill. Don’t let outsiders and naysayers put any doubt in your mind about what you want to do or the dreams you may have.”

Her daughter is certainly following her basketball dreams.

Uber Driver Arrested For Vehicular Homicide, DUI Manslaughter

Uber Driver Arrested For Vehicular Homicide, DUI Manslaughter

HAINES CITY, FL – After a nearly two-month investigation by the Haines City Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit, an Orlando man was arrested Thursday night for his role in a car crash in the early morning hours of Jan. 8 that resulted in another man’s death.

Clint Fischer Jr., 27, is being held on charges of DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, possession of

methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Fischer was under the influence when he hit the back of a tractor trailer, culminating in the death of 30-year-old passenger Estevan Pascual of Orlando.

The southbound semi was nearly stopped at U.S. 17/92 and Shamrock Drive when Fischer struck it at about midnight in a rented Toyota sedan. Pascual suffered blunt force trauma to the head and died on the scene.

Emergency personnel arrived and CPR was attempted, but Pascual could not be resuscitated. Fischer was

transported to AdventHealth Heart of Florida to be treated for facial injuries.

Fischer told police that he was an Uber driver and had picked up Pascual in Orlando to drive him to Uncle Pete Road, located in unincorporated Haines City. The driver of the semi told police that he was looking for the location to drop off his load when his vehicle was struck in the back by the Toyota.

The investigation determined that Fischer’s vehicle had begun drifting off the road and showed no signs of braking prior to impact. Upon impact, the Toyota continued forward before coming to a rest alongside the tractor trailer.

Located in the Toyota was a bag belonging to Fischer with a glass smoking device containing a powdery residue that tested positive for methamphetamine. A warrant was obtained and a blood sample was taken from Fischer at Heart of Florida to be tested by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Results of the blood testing were received on Tuesday and showed Fischer to be under the influence of a “greater than therapeutic amount” of meth and of THC (marijuana). The Orange County Sheriff’s Office assisted with making the arrest at Fischer’s Orlando home.

“As law enforcement officers, we see the merits of these ride-sharing applications for those who are drinking or without a license,” Chief Jim Elensky said. “Those using these applications should be able to have the expectation that their drivers be alert, competent and sober behind the wheel. In this case, the driver’s actions cost a man his life”

You Can Run But You Can’t Hide From Winter Haven Police Deparment

You Can Run But You Can’t Hide From Winter Haven Police Deparment

An armed burglary suspect attempts to escape officers, but is quickly apprehended and now faces numerous felony charges.
On March 4, 2020 at approximately 9:15 p.m., a 9-1-1 officers responded to a suspicious incident call at the Abbey Lane Apartments in Winter Haven. The call involved possible glass breakage at one of the apartments, however the caller was not speaking and the call taker heard glass breaking. Once on scene, officers started going to numerous apartments to find where the glass breaking sound had come from. After checking three areas, officers were approached by a female with obvious swelling on her face and she was visibly shaken and crying.

She advised that 33 year-old Rahsann Eaton (DOB 9-6-86) had come to her apartment and started banging and kicking the door. The victim did not answer the door and immediately called 9-1-1, but did not speak for fear of Eaton hearing her on the phone. Eaton then went to the back of the apartment and broke a window out which is the sound the call taker heard. Eaton sustained cuts on his hand and foot from the broken glass as he climbed through the window to enter the apartment.

He went to the upstairs area of the apartment where the victim and three small children were and he grabbed the victim’s cell phone while on with the 9-1-1 operator. Eaton looked at the phone and saw that the victim called 9-1-1 and then started punching the victim in the face numerous times. The victim ran out of the room and Eaton continued to follow her ultimately wrapping his arm around her upper body and holding a knife to her throat.  The children were still upstairs and were not physically injured. While holding the knife to her throat, he told her, “You want to call the cops on me? I’ll kill you!” the victim was able to wrestle the knife from Eaton and ran back upstairs throwing the knife out of an upstairs window.

Eaton caught the victim, tore off her shirt and wrapped his bleeding hand and left the area with her cell phone just prior officers arriving to the apartment complex. He was not immediately located. The victim and the children went to a family’s home for the night and officers continued to monitor the area in case Eaton returned.
At approximately 2:20 a.m. on March 5, 2020, officers patrolling the area found Eaton back at the apartment. They gained entry into the apartment and Eaton began fighting officers. K-9 officer Garcia deployed his partner Logan, which was successful ultimately allowing officers to place Eaton in handcuffs.

When officers took Eaton to Winter Haven Hospital to be treated for the cuts and dog bite, Eaton began wrestling officers again and was able to break free. As he ran through the parking lot, officers deployed a Department-issued electronic control device (TASER), which was effective and took Eaton back into custody. Once he was cleared by hospital staff, Eaton was transported to the

Polk County Jail and charged with the following:

Armed Burglary with Assault/Battery (F.S.S. 810.02(2)(A) – FL (Felony Life); Escape (F.S.S. 944.40) – F2; Tampering With Witness (F.S.S. 914.22(1)(E) – F3; and Touch/Strike/Injuring Police Dog (F.S.S. 843.19(3)

Eaton was also charged with Possession of Firearm by Convicted Felon (F.S.S. 790.23(1)(A) – F2 and Felony Battery (F.S.S. 784.041(1) – F3  for an incident that occurred the day before (March 3, 2020) when he battered the same victim. She called law enforcement and authorities were unable to locate him, so a complaint affidavit was filed with the process of filing for a warrant was in place.

Eaton has previous battery convictions from cases by Polk County Sheriff’s Office and Lakeland Police. He also had a conviction of resisting arrest with violence in 2008 by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

“I am so proud of the way our officers continued to search for this guy throughout the night, ultimately putting him where he belongs,” said Public Safety Director Charlie Bird. “Our victim and her children can hopefully begin picking up the pieces after such violent encounters they endured.”

UPDATE: Scenic Hwy North of CR 630 Motorcycle Vs Vehicle Crash

0

PCSO Press Release:

Around 3:25 p.m. on March 4, 2020, PCSO and PCFR responded to Scenic Highway north of CR 630 in Frostproof in reference to a two-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle and a Honda Pilot.

According to the investigation so far, the red 2013 Yamaha motorcycle being driven by 24-year-old Mason Chapman of Lake Wales was heading northbound on Scenic Hwy at a high rate of speed, while the grey 2018 Honda Pilot being driven by 73-year-old Barbara Brown of Frostproof was traveling southbound. As the Pilot was turning east (left) into the entrance to the Save-A-Lot store, the approaching motorcycle began to brake, leaving 50 feet of skid marks, before striking the Pilot on the rear passenger side. Chapman was ejected from the bike, and his body went into the back seat of the Pilot. He was wearing a helmet, but he was declared deceased on-scene.

Brown and her passenger, her 63-year-old husband Larry, were wearing their seatbelts. They had minor injuries but were transported to a hospital in Sebring to be checked out. Preliminarily it appears Brown violated the right-of-way of the bike, however, the bike was also traveling at a high rate of speed, which contributed to the crash. The investigation is ongoing.

The roadway was closed for approximately 4 hours during the investigation.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to family and friends for this tragic loss.

UPDATE Polk City Man Dies After Fatal ATV Accident by SR 33 at Deen Still Rd

Around 9:50 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3, 2020, PCSO and PCFR responded to the area of SR 33 at Deen Still Road in Polk City where an ATV had crashed, pinning the driver underneath and killing him.

The driver, 34-year-old Sion David Evans of Polk City, was declared deceased on-scene. According to the preliminary evidence and witnesses, Evans was operating the ATV – a red and black Honda Pioneer 700 side-by-side – eastbound along the shoulder of Deen Still Road, west of SR 33, with a friend who was on his own ATV. The friend was in front and did not see or hear the crash – when he realized Evans was no longer behind him, he turned around and found him trapped underneath the ATV. Tire marks and an independent witness indicated that the ATV entered the roundabout at a high rate of speed, and went up on two wheels, causing the driver to lose control. Once the ATV struck a curb, it flipped onto its side and struck a light pole. Evans was ejected, and then trapped underneath the ATV as it flipped. He was not wearing any protective clothing or a helmet. The roadways in the area were closed for approximately an hour during the investigation. Numerous beer cans and a cooler were located on the ATV, and a strong odor of alcohol was present on Evans. Impairment and excessive speed appear to be a factor.
