Law Enforcement Honored At 5th Annual Bartow Ford Back The Blue Luncheon

Law enforcement officers from across the county had the opportunity to enjoy a complimentary barbecue meal during the fifth annual Bartow Ford Back The Blue Luncheon last Thursday.

For the past five years, Bartow Ford has been hosting this luncheon to show their gratitude for the hard work that police officers, first responders, and other law enforcement officials do to protect and serve their local community.

Several tables were set outside the car dealership, draped in blue tablecloths and topped with Thin Blue Line flags, providing enough room for any law enforcement officer to take a plate and seat with a free meal on the house.

Fresh smoked pulled pork and ribs were served, along with all of the traditional “fixings” including corn bread, baked beans, and cole slaw, as well as dessert including “Thin Blue Line” flag-decorated cookies.

The Honorable Sheriff Grady Judd attended this year’s event. He has been attending the luncheon with his fellow officers ever since the luncheon started five years ago. He loves the food, and he especially loves the people.

“I appreciate that they [Bartow Ford] are showing their appreciation for law enforcement,” Sheriff Judd said. “These law enforcement officers stand in the gap between good and evil, they take a bullet so that you don’t have to. That is the kind of people they are, and Bartow Ford wants to show how much they appreciate our service, and we appreciate them for that.”

Benny Robles Jr., President and Owner of Bartow Ford, and someone who has been working there at his father’s company since he was 12 years old, started the luncheon as a way for his company to show their support for the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

Bartow Ford hosts at least ten community events per year. His company supports the local community, and they especially support local law enforcement, which inspired them to start this annual luncheon, Robles said.

Normally, the Back The Blue Luncheon is hosted earlier in the year when the weather is cooler; but due to the COVID-19 crisis, the event was postponed until later. Aside from the pandemic, the event proves especially timely in light of nationwide protests concerning police brutality.

Robles firmly believes there should be some police reform, but he also believes that law enforcement plays a vital role in protecting their community, and for that reason, they should receive recognition and appreciation.

“We realize that police officers and first responders are and important members of the community,” he said. “We in the community appreciate them and we thank them.”

Amy Sumerlin, Bartow Ford Marketing Director, loves the event, not only because it helps show appreciation for local cops and first responders, but because her own daughter is a deputy.

“My favorite cop calls me mom, that makes it all the more special for me,” she said. “We just want to show support in these tumultuous times. We know that there are a lot of cops, 99 percent, who are good, and we want to show that we believe that: that not a few bad apples somewhere in the nation make all of them bad.”

This year’s event, even in the midst of the pandemic and uncertain times, drew in a great turnout. Due to social distancing, only half the number of tables were set, and yet that was more than enough to seat the many officers who came throughout the day.

Many officers like Sheriff Judd have been coming since the event first started five years ago. For many others, like officers Joel Morales and G DeSouza from Haines City, this was their first year.

“We wanted to be part of what they are celebrating,” Officer DeSouza said. “The fact that they support law enforcement right now in this much needed time, we definetly wanted to come out today. This is amazing.”

“If this is like this every year, than I’m going to start coming every year,” said officer Morales. “The dedication they have for law enforcement here and the way they care for us is amazing. This is bar none the best.”

Lake Wales Man Charged With Attempted Murder After Allegedly Beating Neighbors With Table Leg

Lake Wales, Florida – A Lake Wales man had been charged with Attempted 2nd Degree Murder after allegedly beating neighbors with table leg.

According to an arrest affidavit by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office the incident occurred on July 24th at a home on Silvio Rd. in Lake Wales. The incident occurred between two neighbors. The two neighbors reportedly were arguing over an agreement the two had (the affidavit didn’t elaborate on the agreement). One of the victims started yelling at the defendant from the street in front of defendants home. A person at the defendants residence started to argue back with the victim. At some point the defendant Ernesto Pagan-Rodriguez left his property, grabbed a wooden table leg (according to PCSO) and struck the victim (a man) several times. The second victim who lives at same residence (a female) tried to pull the first victim away to safety. That is when she reportedly was struck by the table leg. Several of the defendants friends and relatives allegedly told him to stop. Reportedly Pagan-Rodriguez stopped after the table leg broke.

Sheriff’s detectives could not get a statement from the male victim as was transported to the hospital in critical condition. He suffered from multiple facial fractures, broken ribs, minor brain bleed and was placed on a ventilator.

Pagan-Rodriguez was taken into custody and charged with Attempted Murder, Aggrevated Assault and tampering with evidence.

He is currently out of jail after posting bond.

Three Georgia Women Should Have Known Better Than To Allegedly Traffic Drugs In Polk County

0

On August 5, 2020 members of the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) task force and PCSO undercover detectives received a tip about a suspected drug trafficker from Georgia who was coming to Polk County to sell methamphetamine.
During the investigation, an undercover Polk County Sheriff’s Office detective agreed to buy two-kilograms of methamphetamine from 43 year-old Jennifer Lynn McGrotha of Ochlocknee, Georgia. McGrotha arrived in Polk County with passengers Amber Nicole Godinez (34 years-old) and Shelli Hilton Borrows (38 years-old). McGrotha exited her vehicle and approached the undercover detective to conduct the transaction. She attempted to sell the undercover detective one-kilogram of methamphetamine. According to the affidavit, she told the undercover detective “that she only brought one kilogram and was not able to get the second kilogram due to not having the money to pay for the second kilogram.” A kilogram is approximately 2.2 pounds.
During a search of the vehicle, detectives discovered another 55.71 grams of methamphetamine. The total combined weight of all the methamphetamine was 1,131.31 grams (about 2.5 pounds) – with a street value of about $70,000.
During interviews, each of the woman admitted to knowing about the methamphetamine transaction. McGrotha told detectives that Borrows and Godinez asked her to obtain the methamphetamine she brought to Polk County, Florida—McGrotha said she got the meth from a drug dealer in Atlanta. McGrotha stated that Borrows owes her money and this was a way she was going to clear her debt with her. McGrotha stated that Godinez was expecting to receive a vehicle and money in exchange of doing the transaction. Borrows and Godinez confirmed their involvement.
“Methamphetamine is a disgusting life-destroying drug. These drug dealers traveled from Georgia to peddle this poison in our community. I am thankful our HIDTA Task Force detectives got them and their drugs off our streets.” – Grady Judd, Sheriff
Detectives arrested McGrotha, Godinez, and Borrows on the charges listed below:
Jennifer Lynn McGrotha

  • Trafficking in Methamphetamine over 200 grams (F-1)
  • Conspiracy to Traffic in Methamphetamine over 200 grams (F-1)
  • Possession of a Vehicle to Traffic in Drugs (F-2)
  • Possession of Heroin (F-3)

Florida Polytechnic Combat Robotics Team Traveling To India To Take On International Rivals

Combat robotics team ready to take on international rivals

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Combat Robotics Division of Florida Polytechnic University’s Purple Fire Robotics club is ready for a challenge unlike any it has ever faced.

The team is preparing to pack up its champion robots and travel nearly 9,000 miles to prove their mettle at Techfest, a renowned robot fighting event hosted by the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT) in Mumbai, India.

“I am absolutely up for it,” said senior Jacob Rogers, the team’s captain. “I’m ready to put my money where my mouth is.”

He acknowledges that travel restrictions due to COVID-19 may derail their plans, but the team is pressing on in case its dreams of international combat robotics glory have a shot at becoming reality.

Rogers is a business analytics major who has participated in combat robotics for many years, including as a pit crew member for elite fighting robots. He said the all-expense paid invitation for his team to compete in January 2021 was the result of strong competition finishes, hard work, good social media exposure, and a little luck.

“The Indian community is very strong within combat robotics and every once in a while, I would have a conversation with different team members from different Indian teams and I developed a rapport with some of them, including the captain of the IIT team,” Rogers said. “He mentioned that they started a new 8 kg weight class, which is right about the same class as our two championship robots.”

Rogers said he had no idea the conversation was the first step on the team’s path to Mumbai and a competition that regularly draws participants from as far as China, Brazil, and New Zealand.

Rogers was soon invited to participate in an Instagram Live video with the IIT team and was asked to be especially charismatic – a task he gamely accepted.

“I was like, ‘Oh, yeah, I think that’s no problem for us. We did really well in our last tournament and if we went out there I think you’d be looking at a new champion from the US,’” said Rogers, a graduate of Bishop Snyder High School in Jacksonville, Florida.

The digital audience loved the performance and the team was invited to stand behind the bravado by competing in Techfest 2021. Their robots, Themis and Hyperion, will attempt to flip, smash, crash, sweep, and crush the competition.

“I think that based on the design of our robot we will be able to outreach theirs,” Rogers said. “Themis is a good matchup because it has plenty of reach against their robot, and honestly, even as our second-best robot it could beat their champion.”

Sophomore electrical engineering major Reid Canyon Kauffman said he is ready for the challenge.

“It’s a great feeling knowing that we have the opportunity to compete on a stage like this, halfway across the world,” said Kauffman, a graduate of Braden River High School in Bradenton, Florida. “It shows that we have created a team that is recognizable to competitors and fans all over the world.”

Tech Tuesday: Cyber Security Prevention

Recently Cyber Criminals attacked and demanded ransom from the popular GPS maker Garmin. Garmin issued a statement sharing that a Cyber Attack took many of Garmin’s computer systems offline causing several online subscription services to be unavailable. Garmin does not believe the attackers were able to obtain any customer data, including payment information from Garmin Pay™.

The Cyber-attack not only affected general fitness users of their popular products but also affected commercial services like flyGarmin and Garmin Pilot Apps which are used by pilots for flight planning and updating mandatory FAA databases in order to be cleared to fly. According to Sky News, to alleviate some of the pain Garmin paid millions of dollars through a third-party company called Arete Incident Response to obtain an encryption key in order to recover their Systems and get services back online.

Companies typically pay ransomeware in the form of BitCoin in order to obtain and encryption key that can be used to decrypt their systems.

While Garmin works very hard to restore systems it should come as no surprise that this attack will not only costs them millions in Ransom but their business will suffer reputational damage that could affect their stock price.  While the details of the attack have not been confirmed it is very possible that attackers had been conducting reconnaissance on their systems for months with alarm bells going off. These alarms were either never caught, ignored or tagged as false positives and never completely investigated.

Unfortunately, it appears that Cyber Attacks against small and large businesses are increasing. The large movement of working from home and having offsite access to some of an organizations crown jewels adds an additional risk to Organizations that once was not considered. Staff who typically could only access certain high value assets while onsite are now able to access the same resources from the comfort of their living room. Sometimes times these high value assets are accessed from the same machine used for family entertainment such as Facebook, email, Netflix, and general internet surfing.

Companies simply were not prepared with the tools needed to be handle the large volume of staff now working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many are not staffed to support the volume of workers or requests needed to maintain offsite staff.

The good news is there is a solutions that will help you not only protect your remote work force but will also provide the ability to remotely support staff, and ultimately be alerted if a Cyber Security Event occurs.

In order to protect your remote staff you must install some type of endpoint protection on their workstation or PC’s. The one I recommend and support is PCMatic’s Endpoint Suite. PCMatic’s Endpoint Protection is a full suite of cybersecurity tools delivering real-time whitelist protection, two-factor device authentication, RDP controls, remote management tools, expansive reporting and more.

PCMatic will provide real time application monitoring to ensure no malware or viruses are running on your user’s system. The added benefit of having PCMatic’s Endpoint Suite is accessing a portal where you can view the overall health and status of your endpoints. It does not matter if the devices are onsite or remote. As long as they have internet access they will check in and report.

The second bonus to running PCMatic’s Endpoint Protection is having the ability to RDP into any machine running the Endpoint Suite. Having remote access to a user’s machine will allow you to provide real time hands on support to all your users both local and remote. This makes handing those rough support calls a little easier as you can see first had what the user is experiencing and take the appropriate actions to mitigate their problem.

Most of all PCMatic’s log collection can be setup to alert you in the event a potential Cyber Security Risks is present in the system. This can range from an attempted failed login to someone attempting to remotely access the machine for remote Command and Control, or an application that attempted to launch but was blocked due to its reputation or actions.

PC Matic Pro Endpoint Suite includes a robust dashboard that provides system health at-a-glance. Key metrics such as CPU load, storage utilization and bandwidth-use are viewable in one central location for system health management, along with device and session settings management.

If you would like to discuss how PCMatic can help protect your business, please reach out for a free consultation. I’ll be glad to show you all the great features and benefits PCMatic provides.
