Pedestrian Struck By Multiple Vehicles & Killed On S.R. 60

0

Polk County Sheriff’s Office Press Release

An unidentified adult male pedestrian was struck by two vehicles last evening on State Road 60 at Nichols Road in Mulberry, and he was declared deceased at a local hospital. Preliminary details are as follows:

Just after 8:45 p.m. on Monday, September 11, 2023, the PCSO ECC received a 911 call regarding a vehicle versus pedestrian crash with injuries. First responders arrived and found an adult Hispanic male with critical injuries lying in the roadway. He was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

During the investigation, deputies interviewed 32-year-old Esdras Jean of Mulberry who told deputies that he was heading eastbound on SR 60 in a green 2011 Nissan Versa when he struck something that he did not see. After striking the victim, the victim rolled onto the hood and into the next lane. Jean made a U-turn and returned to the area, where he located the victim lying on the roadway. While interviewing Jean, 29-year-old Soledad De La Rosa of Mulberry arrived at the scene and approached deputies – she told them that she also struck something that was lying in the road which caused a flat tire on her white 2006 Nissan SUV.

Evidence indicates that the victim was in the outside lane of eastbound SR 60 when he was struck first by the Nissan being driven by Jean, and then he rolled into the outside lane, where he was run over by De La Rosa’s Nissan.

Neither driver showed any signs of impairment, and the investigation is ongoing. Detectives are still trying to positively identify the victim. Eastbound SR 60 was closed for approximately four hours.

15 Yr Old Boy Driving On Permit With 12 Yr Old Sister Causes Accident That Also Becomes A Hit & Run Homicide Of Good Samaritan Helping Crash Victims

0

The Traffic Homicide unit from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office is investigating two related crashes that occurred Monday morning, September 11, 2023 east of Lake Wales; one of the crashes was a fatal hit & run, and the suspect(s) fled on foot.

At about 6:11am, a two-vehicle crash occurred in the intersection of State Road 60 and County Road 630 involving a white 2020 Chevrolet Traverse–driven by a 15-year old from Lake Wales, and a red 2012 Dodge pickup truck—driven by 50-year old Dan Pitisci of Indian Lake Estates.

The 15-year old driver was airlifted to a hospital with minor injuries; his 12-year old passenger was also airlifted with an injury to her head, and she was said to be in critical condition.

Mr. Pitisci was transported by ambulance to the hospital, and was treated and released.

The preliminary investigation shows that the westbound Chevrolet Traverse turned left to head south on CR 630, and crossed into the path of the Dodge pickup which was eastbound.

Following the first crash, a 34-year old Melbourne, Florida man parked his vehicle to assist the injured victims. At that time, a white 2012 Honda Odyssey van traveling east on SR 60 struck the Dodge pickup truck and caused it to rotate and hit the Good Samaritan, causing blunt force trauma to the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The occupant(s) of the Honda Odyssey immediately fled on foot.

A search for the suspect(s) by PCSO deputies, K-9 unit, and Aviation has so far been unsuccessful, but remains ongoing.

A check of the Honda Odyssey revealed that a salvage title was obtained for it in Arizona back in 2022, and it was serviced twice this year, once in Arizona, and also in New Mexico.

“We saw two completely different kinds of people on this crash—a brave, concerned man immediately trying to render aid to injured strangers, and a selfish coward who ran away. We’re going to do everything we can to find the person responsible, but we could use any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem. We need to know who that white 2012 Honda Odyssey belongs to, or who drove it. You can call our Traffic Homicide detectives at 863-668-3100, or you can call anonymously to Heartland Crime Stoppers at 1-800-226-TIPS and even be eligible for a $5,000 reward if your information leads to an arrest.” – Grady Judd, Sheriff.

More Than 50 Jeeps Attend Inaugural Honor Our Heroes Convoy

More Than 50 Jeeps Attend Inaugural Honor Our Heroes Convoy

by James Coulter

Patrick Evans remembers where he was on Sep. 11, 2001. He was at boot camp firing rounds on the training range and preparing to go to war when he heard the news.

22 years later, he and his family still remember that fateful day. On Sunday, he and his fellow patriots took to the road in their Jeep vehicles in honor of their local first responders and firefighters.

More than 50 Jeep vehicles participated in the inaugural Honor Our Heroes Jeep Convoy on Sun. Sep. 10. They started at Thunder Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Bartow and drove to Lakeland, all the while passing by fire and police departments in both cities.

Each vehicle took the opportunity to show their patriotic colors, either with their vehicles painted in red, white, and blue or by flying the red, white, and blue flag from their car.

More than 50 Jeeps participated, though they were originally anticipating 30 with those expectations being more than exceeded with at least 60 to 70, explained Patrick Evans of the Florida Jeep Connection.

“This event is about patriotism and remembering 9/11,” he explained. “So, it has been 22 years and we want to give the honor and respect to the officers and firefighters that are out here. So, we create a lot of unity with the Jeeps and Jeep owners we have out here.”

Evans owes their success to the community his organization has fostered with fellow Jeep owners. They have hosted plenty of other patriotic events in support of the military and law enforcement.

“We bring Jeeps together,” he said. “What makes this a success? To be able to turn around and be a joint effort with every different Jeep crew that is out there. It is about coming together.”

Polk County Sheriff’s Office Retrieving Body Floating In Lake Eloise

Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputies have identified the deceased boat driver involved in the single fatal boat crash from this morning on Lake Eloise in unincorporated Winter Haven. The deceased is 51 year old Michael J. McCarson of Winter Haven. His next of kin have been notified. After a thorough search of the area, and after interviewing those who know and who were with Mr. McCarson prior to the crash, detectives are ruling out any other victims related to this boat crash. Detectives have determined an approximate time of the crash to be at around 12:30 a.m. Saturday morning (this morning), September 9, 2023.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit is investigating the crash. We received a call this morning at around 6:50 a.m. from a fisherman reporting there was a disabled boat in the water that had run into a cypress tree. Deputies responded and discovered one deceased person in the water—identified as Mr. McCarson. At this point it appears to be a single boat crash where the boat collided with a cypress tree in the lake. The crash occurred near the north shore of the lake. Deputies will continue to investigate what circumstances may have led to the crash.

PCSO Currently On Scene Of Fatal Crash On US 98

The PCSO Traffic Homicide Unit responded to a single motorcycle fatality this morning on Rockridge Road in north Lakeland, just west of the intersection with U.S. Hwy 98. Around 7:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 7, 2023, the ECC received a 911 call regarding the crash when a passerby spotted the motorcycle and adult male on the ground.

According to the girlfriend of the motorcyclist, who was 40-year-old Ronel Edward Kirkland II of Country Side Drive in Lakeland, he left her home around 1:00 a.m. this morning on his 2002 black and red Kawasaki motorcycle to go get a tool and she never heard from him after that. It appears that he failed to negotiate the left curve, and the bike went off the north shoulder of the roadway. The bike traveled across a small ditch, at which time Kirkland was ejected, striking a hog wire fence. It appears his head struck the fence post, and he was not wearing a helmet.

A photo from the scene is attached. Per normal protocol, the bike was placed upright by investigators to avoid fuel leaking into the ground.

Welcome, World Travelers! Blue Beetle is a Blue Blast!

Welcome, World Travelers! Blue Beetle is a Blue Blast!

by James Coulter

Look! I’m skipping the formalities and jumping straight to the conclusion. The only thing preventing me from calling Blue Beetle the best superhero movie of the year is Across the Spiderverse. Other than that, second place isn’t bad. Blue Beetleis a fun movie, and if you love fun with your superhero flicks, you’ll love it.

Currently, Blue Beetle sits at the crossroads between the former DCEU/Snyderverse and the upcoming James Gunn-helmed DC franchise. Only time will tell whether this movie will be included as part of the former or the latter. But one thing is for certain: Blue Bettle certainly stands out as one of the better DC films to be released these past couple of years—of course, compared to The Flash and Shazam II, that’s certainly a low bar to clear!

Blue Beetle follows the story of Jaime Reyes, a fresh college graduate who’s returned home to his family in Palmera City. With him straddled in college debt and his family being forced to sell their home, Jaime needs to find a good-paying job to help them out of their lower-class straits. However, his job search has him unwittingly smuggling a top-secret weapon from One Man Army Corps (OMAC). That weapon transforms him into the Blue Beetle, a superhero with high-tech power armor. Will Jaime be able to master his new abilities and save his family from the evil corporation hunting him?

Blue Beetle is what happens when you cross Spider-Man with Iron Man and combine them into RoboCop. Admittedly, the plot is rather basic with story beats you can see coming a mile away. However, the movie more than makes up for its familiar formula with high-octane action and comedy with a colorful and energetic cast of characters.

Believe me when I say that Blue Bettle is the best kind of superhero movie: the fun kind. Those types of superhero flicks are the best. Guardians of the GalaxyDeadpoolShazamAnt-Man. Movies that take themselves seriously enough to maintain dramatic tension but not too seriously as to allow themselves to go hog wild and have the funnest of fun times.

The setting of Palmera City, with its sleek futuristic metropolis contrasted against the backdrop of the main character’s culturally-rich neighborhood, offers an overall vibrant environment that provides a unique ethnic flare. From its predominately Hispanic cast to its Latino-influenced setting with the occasional Spanish dialogue and Latino musical scores offers a culturally unique moviegoing experience that can be appreciated by Hispanics and non-Hispanics alike (with the exception of people who unironically use the term “woke”). This movie, along with movies like Black Panther and Shang-Chi, help make superhero films into a true melting pot with an infusion of multi-cultural diversity into the otherwise American-centric genre.

Perhaps the movie’s shining gem is its family dynamic. Most other superhero films have the main character trying to hide their superhero identity from their loved ones to protect them. However, with him getting his new superpowers with his whole family present in the room (with wacky shenanigans ensuing), Jaime already has his entire family clued into his superhero shenanigans. What results are very comedic moments with his family reacting to him being a superhero. And while this movie does have the familiar story beat of the hero having to defend his family against the bad guys—well, no spoilers, but let’s just say that the trope gets wonderfully subverted later in the movie.

Overall, don’t let the movie’s disappointing opening weekend deter you. If you love fun, and you love super hero movies that are fun, then you should give Blue Beetle a chance. Otherwise, if you prefer your superheroes to be dark, brooding, and very un-fun, don’t worry: you can still watch Batman v. Superman and the rest of the Snyderverse streaming on HBO Max.

Polk Couple Charged With Aggravated Child Abuse & Murder Of 6 Yr Old Boy Who They Had Been Punishing & Putting Into Dog Cage

0

Polk County Sheriff’s Office Press Release

On August 31, 2023, a Winter Haven couple was indicted by a Polk County grand jury for:

·    First Degree Murder

·    Aggravated Child Abuse by Aggravated Battery

·    Aggravated Manslaughter of a Child

·    Tampering in Felony Life Capital Proceeding

·    Child Abuse

·    Cause Minor to become Delinquent/Dependent/Needy

The indictment is a result of an extensive investigation into the April 22nd drowning death of a 6-year-old boy who was in their care.

According to the affidavits, Tre (27) and Alize (25) Seymore, who are married and guardians of several children in their home, repeatedly abused a 6-year-old boy and coerced/rewarded two other children in the home to engage in the abuse, which ultimately led to the child being drowned in a bathtub.

“My detectives are simply the very best in the business. We knew early on during this investigation that there was no rational explanation for this young child’s death, and that it was caused by his mother and stepfather. Through my detectives’ dogged determination and the outstanding partnership we have with the State Attorney for the 10th Judicial Circuit, Brian Haas, we were able to bring this case to the grand jury for indictments. Our hearts break for this young boy’s father. Please keep him and his family in your prayers.” – Grady Judd, Sheriff

When deputies arrived at the crime scene on Sun Burst Road in Winter Haven on April 22, 2023, the Seymores told them that the victim was sent to take a bath as punishment for soiling himself. Tre did not check on the victim for at least 20 minutes, and when he went to open the bathroom door he said it was locked. After breaking into the bathroom, he told detectives, they found the victim face down in the water. They called 911.

The victim did not regain consciousness, and he was declared deceased in the hospital on April 24, 2023.

During a search warrant at the home, detectives noted that the bathroom did not have electricity, nor windows to allow in any light. The bedrooms where the children slept also did not have electricity. Tre admitted that he turned off the breaker to those rooms so that there would not be any electricity for the kids. The kids’ bedroom doors also locked from the outside. Clothing soiled with urine and feces was in one of the bedrooms; the closet in that bedroom also had feces on the wall. Detectives found a dog cage in the garage, which they later discovered during their investigation was used to “punish” the victim by locking him inside it. A count of medications prescribed to the victim revealed that they were not being given to the victim.

Medical records from when the victim was admitted on April 22nd, and his subsequent autopsy, revealed evidence of scars from prior physical abuse. On April 22nd he had multiple open wounds as well.

Detectives interviewed the other children in the home, and two of the kids (ages 7 and 10) told them that they were rewarded with candy and food if they participated in “beating up” the victim and putting the victim in the dog cage. They disclosed that Tre would take the victim “swimming” in the bathroom as punishment, and that “swimming” meant “drowning” which meant “holding the victim’s head underwater.” One child told detectives he witnessed Tre holding the victim’s head under the water and then pulling the victim out of the water and performing CPR. He said that Alize threatened to choke him if he told the truth about Tre doing this to the victim.

During a forensic examination of the suspects’ cell phones, detectives found text messages between Tre and Alize Seymore describing abusing the victim, and photos and videos of the abuse and the victim being locked in the dog cage. The following are actual text conversations between the two:

On 04-07-2023 (1724 hours) – Alize says “VICTIM man”, Tre replies “What now?”, Alize says “I hate him”

On 04-12-2023 (0147 hours) – Tre says “Why keep putting him in the garage if you’re going to constantly have her over, Wtf is wrong with you alize, Can you please f**king think for once in your life.” Alize says “It was only tonight, I’ll take him out. U put him in baby”, Alize says “She don’t even know he here he ain’t speak all day. I’ve been talking to him”.

On 04-15-2023 (0058 hours) – Alize says “Couldn’t get him out and honestly don’t want him out.” Tre says “Why can’t you just do it the right way until you can sign him over to a agency, What is the point of compromising EVERYTHING just for a sick twisted way of revenge?, It serves no purpose and it doesn’t work.” Alize says “Man boy it was ok wen u was doing it tho, Gtfoh.”

On 04-21-2023 (0129 hours) – Alize says “Street runner (Song by rob wave) is sooooo important to me. It makes me cry about u it’s so relatable to me. Frfr especially the girls whole part in the song everything she sings. If I ever killed VICTIM it would be to that song.” Tre replies “Bruh”, Alize says “Cause I honestly was gonna I’m just being honest”

On 04-21-2023 (1714 hours) – Alize says “I wanna put him for adoption”.

Polk County Sheriff’s Office detectives obtained felony warrants for both suspects in May 2023 for: aggravated child abuse, child abuse [for encouraging the other children to abuse the victim], tampering with a witness, and causing a child to be dependent [due to the fact that DCF had to take the remaining children into custody]. The suspects were taken into custody in Alachua County and booked into the Alachua County Jail on May 18, 2023. They were later transferred to the Polk County Jail, where they remained until their recent indictments.
