Pedestrian In Critical Condition After Being Struck Saturday Night On Rifle Range Road

Wahneta, Florida – At approximately 7:30 pm on Saturday, November 6, 2016, 39-year-old Pedro Cabraera of Rifle Range Road, was walking on the West side of Rifle Range Road in the area of 11th Street West.  For unknown reasons, Cabraera darted across Rifle Range and in front of a 2013 Nissan driven by 23-year-old Brandon Smith of Winter Haven, who was traveling North on Rifle Range. 

Cabraera was transported to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center in critical but stable condition. 

While the investigation is ongoing, at this time, no charges are expected.

Bartow Man & 2 Children Killed In Crash

The Florida Highway Patrol were called to the scene of a crash early Sunday morning involving 2 adults & 2 children. According to reports the crash occured at approximately 2:30 am. A Bartow, Florida father and two children were killed when the vehicle they were traveling in, 2005 Maserati, left Interstate 75 and crashed onto a street below. The crash occurred near S.R.60.

According to FHP reports Ronald L. Green II, 31, Ronald L. Green III, 5, and Sariyah Green, 9 were killed in the crash. A 4th victim
Tiffany Lasha Young, 26, of Bartow, was taken to Tampa General Hospital in serious condition.

It is unknown if alcohol was a factor. The two children in the car were wearing seatbelts. The two adults were not and both were thrown from the vehicle.

Lake Wales Man Arrested After Allegedly Driving A Truck Into Crowd & Leaving Scene

Haines City, Florida – Three people were seriously injured after a Lake Wales man drove into a crowd outside a Haines City bar. According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office the incident occurred around 2:30 am at Memo’s Tequila Bar, 2511 Hwy 17/92 in N. Haines City Saturday November 5, 2016.

According to PCSO reports the 20 yr old driver, Jose Soto of Townsend Ave., Lake Wales, Florida, drove a 2005 F150 pickup truck into three men standing outside the bar. Soto then fled the scene in the truck. He was later found at his home on Townsend Ave. He is being charged with Leaving Scene of Crash with Serious Bodily Injury and Culpable NegligenceTo  Inflict Harm.

Deputies say the initial call was for a fight. According to reports Soto was involved in a verbal argument with another unknown Hispanic man over a girl the two had been talking to in the bar.. One witness advised that Soto was leaving the bar & the unknown man followed him. Meanwhile Soto ‘s father got Soto’s truck & drove up to the front door of the bar. Soto & the man began a physical confrontation outside in front of the bar. Several other subjects were also outside in front of the bar & may have confronted Soto. According to multiple witnesses Soto got into his truck with his father. He allegedly reversed the truck and then accelerated striking 3 men. The three victims were Moises Maldonado, Hilario Rodriguez and Venancio Mejia all from Haines City. Soto then fled the scene.  According to witnesses the unknown Hispanic male who Soto was fighting with avoided being hit & left the scene also.

Soto allegedly acknowledged,  in an interview with deputies, that he was angry at the unknown man & wanted to fight him. He said a group of 10 people attacked him as he left the bar parking lot. He allegedly advised deputies he jumped into his truck and began to exit the parking lot. As he accelerated he said the wheel must have been turned because he ran into the group of people. He allegedly advised that he was angry, but didn’t mean to hurt anyone. He allegedly knew he hit someone, but was scared & drove home.

Two of the three men were apparently airlifted for medical treatment. No further details are available regarding their condition at this time.

Two Juveniles Arrested For Theft Of Lake Wales Mini-Van

Lake Wales, Florida – On October 25, 2016 Lake Wales resident Richard Mosely contacted the Lake Wales Police Department to report his mother’s 2010 Chrysler minivan stolen. The van had been left unlocked with the key inside on Curran St.

Early in the morning on October 26th the van was located by Auburndale Police on Alberta Street in their city. The van was processed for evidence and towed from the location because the only key to it had been taken.

Later in the day on October 26th two black males were observed by residents on Alberta Street walking back to where the stolen van had been. After realizing their stolen van was gone, the males asked a neighbor if they knew where the van had gone. The neighbor immediately called Auburndale Police who responded back and detained the two males. One of the males, Patrick Brown Jr, 17 yrs old from Auburndale was found to have the van keys.  

A short time later during an interview with Detective Alvin Maultsby, Brown admitted that he had been driving the stolen van. He also admitted that he knew the van was stolen. During the investigation Detective Maultsby learned who originally took the van and gave it to Brown. Brown was arrested by Auburndale Police on unrelated charges along with vehicle theft for this case. Brown was charged with auto theft.

Detective Maultsby identified the second suspect as Marvell Parkinson, 17 yrs old from Lake Wales. On November 3, 2016 Detective Maultsby and Detective Travis Worley located Parkinson on C Street. Parkinson resisted arrest but was taken into custody for vehicle theft. He was later transported to the juvenile assessment center in Bartow for auto theft and resisting arrest.  

Both Parkinson and Brown have prior arrests.

PCSO TRAFFIC HOMICIDE INVESTIGATORS HAVE ARRESTED THE SUSPECT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE HIT-AND-RUN CRASH that killed Jessica Enchautegui-Otero and seriously injured Deputy Sheriff Adam Pennell.

Around noon on Thursday, November 3, 2016, Heartland Crime Stoppers received an anonymous tip about the suspect truck that might be involved in the hit-and-run crash that occurred around 12:40 a.m. on Saturday, October 29th, in the grass median off of westbound SR 60 in Lake Wales between Tiger Lake and Sam Keen Roads.

The PCSO Traffic Homicide Unit responded to Mar Lisa Cove Road, off of Camp Mack Road, and saw a blue Ford F-150 heading down the road, leaving the residential area. They performed a traffic stop on the truck, and began talking to the driver, who was positively identified as the hit-and-run suspect: 71-year-old Charles “Charlie” Lewis of 2853 Mar Lisa Cove Road, Lake Wales.

Charlie made a full confession. He told deputies he was at a party on Friday night, October 28th, in Indian Lake Estates, where he consumed beers and then drove home. He told them he knew he hit something but didn’t know what he hit. He expressed remorse at killing Jessica Enchautegui-Otero and injuring Deputy Sheriff Adam Pennell.

He will have a first appearance hearing at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 4, 2016.

He is being charged with one count Leaving the Scene of a Traffic Crash Causing Serious Bodily Injury, and Leaving the Scene of a Traffic Crash Causing Death, both first degree felonies.

The investigation is ongoing. If impairment can be proven, further charges will be added.

Polk County Couple Busted For Trafficking In Methamphetamine

Mulberry, Florida – The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has arrested James Collins and Whitney Collins charging them with trafficking methamphetamine.

On October 25, 2016 Polk County Sheriff’s Deputies with the help of a confidential informant set up a drug buy with man, Collins,  suspected of dealing in methamphetamine. A short time after the deal was set up a vehicle matching the description of Collins vehicle arrived at a gas station on S.R. 60 & SW 5th Avenue in Mulberry. It soon pulled out and Collins allegedly called the confidential informant and advised he thought narcotics investigators were following him. Deputies stopped the vehicle and spoke to the subjects inside. James Collins & Whitney Collins were read their Miranda rights. Post Miranda James Collins advised deputies that he didn’t have any drugs on him. Through the coarse of the investigation it was learned that Whitney Collins was allegedly in possession of 27.6 grams methamphetamine. The drugs were not found on initial search as Whitney Collins had the drugs hidden in her vagina. Under the supervision of female investigators Whitney Collins retrieved the methamphetamine from where she had hidden it. A search of the couples home on Ogden Drive in Mulberry allegedly revealed 29.4 grams of methamphetamine hidden behind an air handler and a locked safe containing a loaded 9 mm Glock handgun. Deputies also allegedly found drug paraphernalia, marijuana grinder and glass pipe with marijuana residue, in the home. Investigators also found $41,000 in cash in and under a dresser drawer.

According to reports post Miranda James Collins allegedly admitted to dealing in methamphetamine and selling the drugs for $250 a quarter ounce, $500 a half ounce and $1,000 for an ounce.

The couple was charged with a multitude of charges including Armed Trafficking of Methamphetamine & Conspiracy to Traffic In Methamphetamine. The couple was transported to Polk County Jail.

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is Celebrating it’s 18th Year of Encouraging Writers

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is celebrating its 18th year of encouraging writers from elementary school through adults to put their thoughts and words to paper.  NaNoWriMo challenges people to write 50,000 words of a novel in the 30 days of November.

 

This year, NaNoWriMo expects 500,000 participants from over 600 affiliated chapters across six continents.

 

In support of writers who want to accept this challenge Come Write In sessions are established in libraries, bookstores and other neighborhood spaces.  Writers attend Come Write In sessions to write quietly, or not, with other writers, sharing encouragement and support for one another.

 

The Lake Wales Public Library will host two Come Write In sessions.  The first session will begin at 10 a.m., Monday, November 7.  The second session begins at 3 p.m., Tuesday, November 22.  Both Come Write In sessions will be held in the Library’s Schoenoff Meeting Room.

Polk County, Florida – Polk County Supervisor of Elections Lori Edwards reminds Polk County voters to double check their polling location before heading to the polls on November 8th. The polling locations for some precincts have changed following statewide court-ordered redistricting of Congressional and State Senate districts. Voters are required by law to vote in the precinct in which they reside, and some precincts have moved to different facilities.

All voters should confirm their correct polling location by referring to their 2016 Voter Information Card, visiting PolkElections.com, or calling the Elections Office at 863-534-5888.
