WOUND CENTER MARKS AWARENESS WEEK

WOUND CENTER MARKS AWARENESS WEEK

Lake Wales, FL – The Wound Healing Center at Lake Wales Medical Center, a member of the Healogics network, is helping raise awareness of chronic wounds during Wound Care Awareness Week, June 5 to June 9.

One of nearly 800 Healogics-managed Centers, The Wound Healing Center at Lake Wales Medical Center  offers advanced therapies to patients suffering from chronic wounds.  Chronic wounds affect 6.7 million people in the U.S. and the incidence is rising, fueled by an aging population and increasing rates of diseases and conditions such as diabetes, obesity and the effects of radiation therapy.  If left untreated, chronic wounds can lead to diminished quality of life and possibly amputation.

“We see patients living with non-healing wounds for a prolonged amount of time due to the lack of awareness of advanced wound care options,” said D. Scott Covington, MD, FACS, Chief Medical Director for Healogics. “We work to educate community physicians about which of their patients can benefit from advanced wound care, and then provide coordinated care to heal that patient’s wounds.”

Lake Wales’ Wound Healing Center has received the Healogics prestigious Center of Distinction and Center of Excellence awards for several consecutive years.

“We’re very grateful that the community has reached out to us for help with non-healing wounds, and we’re excited with the many positive outcomes our patients have experienced,” said Tiffany Rodriguez, program director for the Center. “Many of them have been life-changing.”

People with wounds that have not improved with traditional methods of treatment may benefit from a visit to The Wound Healing Center at Lake Wales Medical Center.  Visit www.LakeWalesMedicalCenter.com to learn more about the Wound Healing Center. To schedule an appointment, please call 863-679-1986. To hear from patients about how wound healing changed their life, visit www.woundcareawarenessweek.com .

Suspect Killed In Polk County Deputy Involved Shooting

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deputy-involved shooting in unincorporated Polk County near Lake Wales that occurred Monday, June 5, 2017. The suspect, 34-year-old Quentin Louis
Case of Winter Haven is deceased. No deputies were injured.  This incident occurred after a deputy attempted a traffic stop.

Case had active Polk County warrants for violation of probation stemming from an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge and a possession of methamphetamine charge.  He also had an extensive
criminal history including 15 prior arrests in Polk County.

Deputy Sheriff Clint Wofford was monitoring traffic on State Road 60 at around 6:30 p.m. on Monday evening when he recorded on digital radar a motorcyclist driving at 112 mph travelling east bound.
Wofford activated his emergency lighting & conducted a U-turn & deactivated his emergency equipment. Wofford noticed the motorcycle slowing and he followed him. The motorcycle turned south onto Golden Bough Road and Wofford followed.

D/S Wofford activated his emergency lights and siren initiating a traffic stop as the suspect pulled to the east shoulder of Glen Saint Mary Road. The suspect drove off the roadway dropping the
motorcycle in the soft sand.

D/S Wofford positioned his patrol vehicle near the suspect motorcycle and deactivated his siren.  D/S Wofford exited his patrol vehicle the suspect was moving to the rear of the patrol car.  The
deputy observed the suspect lifted his shirt and retrieve a green and black handgun from his waistband.  The suspect then shot at D/S Wofford with the handgun as he (Case) moved to the rear of the patrol unit.  D/S Wofford returned fire causing the suspect
to retreat into the orange grove.

D/S Wofford moved to a position of concealment at the intersection of Glen Saint Mary Road and Kimbrel Road.  Case then exited the wooded area and proceeded to the patrol car. The suspect again
engaged D/S Wofford with small arms fire.  Case entered the driver seat of the patrol vehicle and attempted get it into gear. D/S Wofford continued to engage the suspect from the intersection of Glen Saint Mary Road and Kimbrel Road. Unable to get the patrol
vehicle into gear the suspect returned to his motorcycle.  He attempted to flee on the motorcycle (south on Glen Saint Mary Road) losing control in the soft sand and dropping it again.  D/S Wofford ran back to his patrol car and retrieved his rifle from the
truck of the vehicle. D/S Wofford provided with verbal commands to Case to show his hands, which Case did not comply.

The suspect remained on the ground near his motorcycle approximately 45 yards further south of the initial engagement.

D/S Coquyt arrived as a secondary backup deputy.  D/S Coquyt got out with his agency issued ballistic shield and Glock .40 caliber handgun.  The deputies observed a black object in the suspect’s
right hand as they approached from the cover of the ballistics shield.  The suspect continued to refuse to comply with verbal commands to produce his hand.  He would occasionally raise his right hand and then put it back down.  He never produced his left hand.

As Deputy Coquyt and Wofford approach they observed the suspect pick up a black handgun and begin to turn it toward them. Both deputies fired their weapons killing Case.

Deputies located a black and green Smith and Wesson Bodyguard .380 handgun on the ground next to case. The firearm had been fired until empty.  An empty six round magazine locked the slide to the
rear.  A holster was observed in the front waist band of the decedent.

During the investigation detectives discovered Case fired between 4 and 7 rounds at which point his gun was empty.  A total of 42 .40 caliber rounds and 8 .223 rifle rounds were fired by Deputy
Wofford. Deputy Coquyt fired two rounds from his .40 caliber handgun.

“The suspect was speeding over 100 MPH on a motorcycle on highway 60. He had two outstanding warrants-one of which was for a violent felony-and he had been arrested 15 times previously in Polk
County. Our deputies protected themselves and shot and killed the suspect. Our message is clear – if you shoot at a Polk County deputy sheriff, prepare to be shot. I am thankful for the safety of our two deputies. We are grateful that nobody else was hurt
or killed and we are saddened by the terrible choice made by the suspect.” Grady Judd, Sheriff

PCSO Deputies Charge Polk City Man With Vehicular Homicide

PCSO deputies arrested 25-year-old Kenneth McIntosh of Polk City, Saturday, June 2, 2017, for 2 counts vehicular homicide (F2), 2 counts DUI manslaughter (F2), 1 count DWLSR causing death/serious injury (F3), 2 counts DUI with serious bodily injury to another (F3), and one count DUI with property damage (M1).

According to the affidavit, on Sunday, August 7, 2016, around 2:15 a.m., McIntosh was driving a white 1999 Ford F-250 Extended Cab pickup truck with five other adult occupants. The truck was traveling north on Thornhill Road when it entered into the curve just north of Sugar Creek Drive in Auburndale. After exiting the curved portion of the road, McIntosh lost control of the truck, overcorrected, and the truck overturned, striking a culvert and causing the truck to flip several times. PCSO deputies determined speed was a factor.

Four passengers were ejected during the roll:

  • Front middle passenger: 32-year-old Wesley Workman, Auburndale; ejected from the truck, deceased
  • Front right passenger: 30-year-old Bradley Jones, Auburndale; He is in stable condition, however, he will need additional medical care for the rest of his life.
  • Rear driver side passenger: 42-year-old Lewis Strickland, Auburndale; ejected from the truck, deceased
  • Rear passenger side passenger: 29-year-old Robert Cushing, Winter Haven.

One passenger was wearing his seatbelt during the crash: Rear middle passenger: 28-year-old Roy Gainey, Auburndale.

A review of the hospital records indicated that at the time McIntosh was brought into the hospital for treatment (after the crash), a blood sample was collected and sent to FDLE, which revealed an Ethanol Level of .194 gm/dL BAC. This indicates he was over two times the legal limit when the crash occurred. Due to his injuries from the crash McIntosh was admitted into the hospital for an extended period of time.

McIntosh has previous arrest charges from PCSO in May, 2010, for DWLSR, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and VOP.

“This man decided to drink and drive, killing two people and seriously injuring two others. It is fortunate McIntosh did not hurt or kill anyone else on the road that morning. Please keep yourself, family, friends, and other drivers safe on the road – don’t drink and drive.” Grady Judd, Sheriff

McIntosh was taken into custody on the aforementioned charges, and booked into the Polk County Jail and is being held no bond.

Lake Wales High School Student Shyla Collins Graduates Junior Year

Lake Wales High School junior Shyla Collins joined the LWHS Graduating Class of 2017 at last Friday’s ceremony that was held at Legion Field in Lake Wales. Shyla had a 4.1 GPA and was 24th in her class. She graduated with Honors and National Honor Society recognition.

But a week earlier, she had no idea that she would be graduating on Friday. The revelation caught her and her parents off guard.

Shyla’s mom, Natasha Alexander, said she was aware of the possibility but the actual paperwork was signed just a week before graduation.

“She knew at the beginning of the year she could possibly graduate as a junior…through-out high school she was doing dual enrollment at Polk State College”.

Dual enrollment allows high school students to take college classes while still in high school and earn credit for those college courses that will count towards both high school diploma and college degree requirements at the same time.

Shyla always excelled in school and began taking dual enrollment classes in ninth grade.

At the beginning of the year, Shyla was informed that she had fulfilled her high school requirements and could graduate early. But Shyla had concerns and spoke to her mom and her dad, David Alexander, about her feelings concerning graduating early.

Shyla told her parents that she felt at the time that she would be missing out on the senior experience such as Senior Pics, the Senior Bash, Senior Brunch and trips with the class to places like the Bok Tower Senior tour which takes students inside Bok Tower and visits with classmates to Orlando theme parks.

So Shyla decided to stay in high school for another year, giving her time to finish her AA degree at Polk State College which was almost complete. She would just schedule OJT and electives for classes at LWHS and would continue attending Polk State College to finish her degree…… At least that was the plan…

While at school recently, the plan Shyla had made changed drastically when she was informed that Polk State College would only pay for three years and that she would need a waiver to attend a fourth year. Also, due to how the grading system works, attending high school for OJT classes and electives could affect her overall GPA and possibly lower it.

So Shyla decided to graduate and with the paper work finalized last Monday, Shyla and her family had five days to prepare for her graduation. So Shyla’s mom, Natasha, jumped into action to make it happen.

“What most parents have a year to prepare for; we had five days” said Natasha.

Shyla’s parents immediately rose to the challenge and began preparing for her graduation. A friend of the family offered to take graduation photos for them and LWHS arranged for Shyla to attend the Bok Tower Gardens Senior tour on Tuesday. But still, some things would still be missed including a full year of cheerleading with her cheerleading coach Shay Hixenbaugh.

“I not really worried about anything I missed” says Shyla “I just really wanted to cheer my last year”.

So after three years of high school, dual enrollment in college, working as a YMCA counselor and serving one day a week at a local restaurant, new graduate Shyla Collins is looking forward to time off during the summer to unwind and enjoy some free time. As the oldest of five children, Shyla was given some sage advice by her mom concerning her summer off from school.

“Please just remember; don’t take too long of a break….a lot of people, they take a long break and then they enjoy the money too much from working and they forget about the college part…”.

After the summer, Shyla will be heading back to LWHS, but it will be as a paid employee. Shyla was hired by Lake Wales High School to work with the children at the Little Highlander Academy located at the school. Shyla has the distinction of being the first junior to ever complete the CDA class (Child Development Associate) and after passing the district test, was hired by the school.

Shyla plans to attend South Florida College, transferring her college credits from Polk State College to seek an Associate of Science degree in Dental Hygiene at South Florida.  When she told her mom of her new plan for college, her mom, Natasha had one question…

“How do you go from child care to dental hygiene??!”

Shyla’s answer surprised her mom and was one that her mom could not refute.

Shyla said “Mom, you always said have a Plan B” to which her mom fully agreed; mentioning that if Shyla decided she didn’t like Dental Hygiene she could always take up Pediatric Dentistry.

So congratulations to Shyla and her parents and to this years graduates of LWHS Class of 2017!!!!!

Good luck and best wishes for the future as well as the many opportunities available to you because of the hard work and dedication you put into your education.

In today’s economy, the need to prepare students for success in college and career cannot be understated. Studies have pointed out the many challenges that are faced by those who lack a high level of knowledge and skills when it comes to competing for employment in the global marketplace.

No longer will a high school diploma alone guarantee a job for a graduate; without a post-secondary degree or certificate, it will be difficult for most students to survive and thrive in this ever changing world we live in.

Dual enrollment and other early college programs offer an avenue toward meeting these challenges. There is evidence of success among dual enrollment programs in improving dropout rates and helping to move more students onto a college-bound track.

Deputies arrest three Avon Park men who fled traffic stop and attempted to run over a deputy

PCSO deputies arrested a driver, 24-year-old Donald Craig Strange III, and two passengers, 24-year-old Just Pierre, and 30-year-old Jed Grant all of Avon Park, this morning, Thursday, June 1, 2017, around 12:20 a.m., for several charges after the car they were in fled from a traffic stop.

According to the affidavits, a PCSO deputy sheriff conducted a traffic stop at a McDonald’s parking lot off of Clubhouse Road in Lakeland, after his digital radar showed a Nissan Sentra driving 80 mph in a 50 mph zone.

While the deputy was approaching the Nissan, he saw the driver of the car move towards the back seat and attempting to exit both the right and left side passenger doors. Each time the deputy saw him move to the right or left side of the car he ordered to him to stop, however, the driver did not comply. There were also two other males in the car. The deputy called for assistance.

The driver jumped back into the driver seat and started to reverse the vehicle towards the deputy and his patrol car. The vehicle struck the deputy on the right side of his body and his right leg, and continued to move towards him until the deputy was able to get out of the way. The deputy was not seriously injured.

Strange fled the McDonald’s parking lot onto Clubhouse Drive towards US 98N driving his Nissan at 103 mph in a 50 mph zone. Deputies utilized a PIT (precision immobilization technique) maneuver to stop the car, which was successful. During a search of the car, deputies found cocaine and marijuana.

The car was registered to Pierre who allowed Strange to drive it knowing he did not have a valid driver’s license and was charged accordingly.

“These suspects have extensive criminal histories, and fled from a traffic stop because they had illegal narcotics in their car. Once again, suspects who might be labeled by some as ‘low-level non-violent drug offenders’ put others’ lives at risk by attempting to run over a deputy sheriff, and fleeing at a high rate of speed. They have clearly demonstrated through their actions last night and their violent criminal histories that they do not belong out on the streets.” – Grady Judd, Sheriff
