Polk County Man Facing Charge Of Attempted Murder Of Law Enforcement Officer When Traffic Stop Goes Bad

Polk County Sheriff’s Office Facebook Post

Motorists who were driving Tuesday night (March 24th) in the area of Cypress Gardens Boulevard and Legoland Way in the Haven of Winter might have been given quite a scare due to the actions of Michael Dinie, our #CriminalOfTheDay.

The 46-year-old Fort Meade man was driving his red 1996 Chevy Cavalier rather dangerously.

At about 11:35 p.m., a deputy saw Dinie weaving on-and-off the roadway, causing other drivers to swerve to avoid contact.

The deputy pulled Dinie over and made sure he was fine. He said he was, but he was sweating and acting odd. The deputy asked Dinie to step out of his car. He began jumping up and down in the roadway yelling, “I’m going to jail! I’m going to jail!”

Dinie jumped back into his car and turned it on. The deputy tried to grab the keys, but Dinie pinned the deputy’s wrist against the steering wheel and began to accelerate. The deputy was able to pull away from the vehicle as it sped off.

Dinie ran a red light at Cypress Gardens Blvd and Helena Road as he continued east.

The deputy tried to get Dinie to pull over again, but he refused, continuing to have narrow misses with other motorists.

After passing Carlton Arms Boulevard, Dinie lost control of his car, drove over the median, went off the road, and struck a tree.

Deputies found fourteen syringes in the car and a plastic baggie containing brown powder which tested positive for PCP.

While being treated for superficial wounds to his face, Dinie said, “Drugs are bad….I’m sorry.” And then he said, “I’m an (expletive).”

He was transported to the Polk County Jail and charged with Attempted 2nd Degree Murder of a LEO (F1), Aggravated Battery on a LEO (F1), Fleeing to Elude (F3), Resisting With Violence (F3), Battery on LEO (F3), Possession of PCP (F3), Resisting without Violence (M1), and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (M1).

Michael Dinie is no stranger to being in a jail. He has a prior criminal history that includes Burglary, Grand Theft, Dealing In Stolen Property, False Info to a Pawn Dealer, Petit Theft, Possession of Hydrocodone (2), Possession of Methamphetamine, and Possession of Paraphernalia (2). And those are just his Florida charges since 2015. Before that, he had a few visits to the Summit County jail in Ohio.

Dundee, Florida – The Polk County Sheriff’s Office arrested a woman who had an accident near 27944 Hwy 27 in Dundee. Deputies charged the woman for Driving Under The Influence with property damage.

On 04/04/2020 at approximately 10:45 pm Polk County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to the scene of an accident near 27944 HWY 27 in Dundee, Florida. During the investigation into the single vehicle crash they observed signs of impairment in the driver, identified as Marina Padilla. Deputies advised the driver they were going to change the investigation from a crash investigation to a criminal DUI investigation. Padilla was read her Miranda Warning and advised she understood her rights.

Post Miranda warnings Padilla told deputies she was driving and arguing with someone on the phone. Padilla said she lost control of the vehicle and really didn’t know how to explain what happened after. Deputies asked Padilla if anyone else was in the vehicle and she said no. According to deputies they detected a moderate odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from her breath. Deputies also reportedly observed Padilla’s eyes were watery and bloodshot and her pupils were dilated.  Padilla swayed back and forth also according to the report. Based on these factors a field sobriety test was conducted which Padilla allegedly failed. She was taken into custody and allegedly provided to breath samples which showed Padilla’s breathe alcohol level to be .124 G/210L / .123 G/210L.

This all occurred on the same day that a Stay At Home order was placed by the Governor of Florida.

Beef O’Brady’s Hosting Virtual Trivia Night Mondays At 6PM On Facebook Live

Beef O’Brady’s Hosting Virtual Trivia Night Mondays At 6PM On Facebook Live

by James Coulter

Are you bored by the lockdown? Nothing to binge on streaming? Kids driving you crazy? Wish there was something fun to do? Luckily, Beef O’Brady’s is prescribing a weekly antidote from cabin fever with their virtual trivia night.

Every Monday at 6 p.m., a virtual trivia night is hosted courtesy of the three Polk locations for Beef O’Brady’s in Haines City, Lake Wales, and Auburndale. Participants can log onto Facebook Live and use their phones to text answers to fun trivia questions for chances to win first, second, or third place prizes.

Aaron Carricato, owner of the three Polk locations, has been hosting these trivia nights at Beef O’Brady’s for quite some time. These special nights had proven popular with customers, who had formed a sense of community and camraderie through them; however, the recent COVID-19 crisis has forced the main dining rooms to shut down, though they remain open for pick-ups and take-out.

While helping provide to-go orders, Carricato heard many customers pine about how much they miss trivia night. With how much their weekly event proves to be the busiest time for Beef O’Brady’s, he was inspired to think of a way to provide these nights even with the dining rooms closed.

“We have about 120 players who come in on a weekly basis for trivia night,” he said. “The trivia nights we have, it isn’t a business thing, it isn’t just about making money, it is the busiest workday that we have.”

So Carricato decided to offer a virtual trivia night through Facebook Live. Since starting it nearly two weeks ago, these virtual events have proven as popular as the actual game nights at the brick-and-mortar eateries. Last week, they drew in 15 teams, with many participants from as far as Tampa and Tallahassee; and this week, they are anticipating 30 teams, he said.

“The idea is to have not a money maker, we are not getting any money, we are giving money away in prizes, but the idea is to keep our customers connected to keep them sane,” he said. “Being at home for the majority of the day can be trying, so we decided by adding this for two hours out of their week, it can give them some excitement and a break from the ordinary.”

Hosting their trivia nights every weeks helped create a sense of community for their customers; and continuing that tradition through their virtual trivia nights has allowed their customers to continue maintaining that sense of camraderie even in the midst of trying times, Carricato said.

“We pride ourselves in being a community resturaunts as opposed to just being a place to grab something to eat,” he said. “Everything we do is based on community…so the key to the whole thing is to give people a break from the ordinary and give them a chance to play trivia and win prizes.”

Beef’s Virtual Trivia Nights are hosted every Monday at 6 p.m. on Facebook Live. To learn more, visit: https://www.facebook.com/groups/148037553202518/

kidsPACK Needs Your Help Giving Local Families Free Meals. Here’s How You Can Help!

by James Coulter

Every weekend, kidsPACK in Lakeland provides free meals to more than 1,700 local children and their families. Not even the current pandemic is stopping them, though it is complicating matters.

The local non-profit organization partners with local schools to identify children who are homeless or food insecure. Every weekend, deliveries are made to give these children at least two nutritious meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with one meal for each day.

During the first week of school closures, and preparing for Spring Break the following week, they worked with local schools to distribute their free meals there. They doubled their regular amount, ensuring that children have enough meals for two weekends, explained Amy Royal, kidsPACK Program Manager.

Normally, kidsPACK purchases groceries from local stores and packs and distributes their meals using Volunteers from 17 local churches and organizations; however, stock-piling by consumers during the pandemic has prevented them from buying in bulk, and the locations where they would pack and distribute their meals have closed due to the COVID-19 crisis.

“The biggest obstacle we are facing right now is getting food,” Royal said. “We are not being able to buy in bulk at this time because of the stock-piling by individuals and families of non-perishable food…[F]ood is flying off the shelves in such a rapid pace that even suppliers cannot keep up with it.”

Due to current circumstances, packaging and deliveries of their meals has been centralized in their Lakeland warehouse location. Special precautions are taken to ensure proper cleanliness and safety. No more than nine volunteers can work in the building at a time. They have to wear gloves, and they cannot show signs of flu symptoms.

Even with these obstacles and challenges, kidsPACK continues to push forward in ensuring that children in need are properly fed. Their success, in spite of such difficulty, has been their preparation and reaction to current events, ensuring that they act accordingly and promptly, Royal said.

“We did not wait,” she said. “In a crisis mode, you cannot wait to see how this is going to happen, so when we figured out that the schools were closing down on the 16th, the morning of the 14th, we started talking to school board members and communicating to our packing site and schools to form a communication path, and I think that has helped us keep successful.”

Two things they need most right now are food and volunteers. They are seeking food donations to provide in their free meals, as well as healthy volunteers to help package and deliver them. Overall, they expect to continue doing their part to fight hunger while also fighting to “stop the spread.”

“We are going week to week, we still maintain we can feed these children, and that is our only priority, and we will do that to the best of our ability,” Royal said. “We have received tremendous support. If we can get food in, then we can take care of the rest.”

This Mobile Unit Provides Oil Changes And Other Auto Repairs Without You Visiting A Garage

by James Coulter

Need your oil changed? Tires rotated? Air filers or battery replaced? Don’t feel like driving all the way to a garage? No problem!

Weikert Ford recently launched their new mobile service unit as an extension of their services department. Instead of you driving all the way to the garage to get your car repaired, now the garage can drive all the way to you to provide you the exact same services.

Their mobile unit offers all of the usual services from oil changes, tire rotations, and replacements for air filters, wiper blades, batteries, and brake pads. Any basic maintenance need you have, their mobile unit can provide without you leaving your home or office.

Since launching their mobile unit five weeks ago, it has proven popular among customers, especially those who have been confined at home due to the current pandemic. Such a unit allows them to provide most of their services directly to their customers rather than requiring their customers to come to them, explained Dana Buxton, Mobile Service Advisor for Weikert Ford.

“Everything we always hear is that ‘I never have time, I can’t get there because I can’t find a ride,’ so we are trying to make it as convenient and customer friendly as possible, make your life easier,” Buxton said.

Especially during the recent pandemic, and especially during the current lockdown, their mobile unit has provided a much needed service to local customers, including senior citizens who are unable or fearful of leaving their home during this time, or stay-at-home parents who need to look after their children.

“That they don’t have to leave their house or work or take time to have someone pick them up, that has been the biggest positive result.”

One review on their Facebook boasts about how the service changed the battery and even checked the charging system in a prompt and timely manner: “Thank you Dana Buxton for your awesome service! One call and you sent Trey with the Ford Mobilservice truck…Thank you so much! Thank you Weikert Ford!”

“Service was timely and the service provider was knowledgeable,” another satisfied customer wrote on Facebook. “Phone personnel very cordial and helpful. Definitely will recommend to others.”

Weikert Ford recently purchased a second unit that is currently being outfitted for their services. They hope to further expand their outreach with new customers in the near future, Buxton said.

“We feel like this will be the newest latest and greatest,” she said. “We have [online services] that delivers your food, we have grocery stores [with similar delivery apps], and now we have maintenance coming to you rather than you having to go to the dealership,” she said.

The mobile unit is provided through Weikert Ford, located at 21399 US Highway 27, Lake Wales, Fl. 33859. For more information, call the main office at: 863-676-7944, or their direct number at: 863-734-2276. Or visit their website at: https://www.weikertford.com
