Auburndale Speedway Had an Incident with an Infant That Couldn’t Breathe. Now They Have an AED in Case of Another Emergency.

by James Coulter

Last week, Auburndale Speedway had an incident where they were forced to momentarily stop their races to attend to an infant who had stopped breathing. They were forced to stop the races so they could check their condition and focus on life-saving efforts. Fortunately, they were able to save the young child and resume their races.

“We had to red flag the enduro race last night because a one-year-old infant was brought to our safety officials not breathing,” a Facebook post read. “They performed CPR and got the baby breathing again and an [ambulance] was called. Thank you to our safety personnel that not only make sure our drivers are okay but also everyone in attendance. At the time it may have seemed like a minor inconvenience during the race but was certainly more important.”

Auburndale Speedway has since been prepared for future emergencies now that an automated external defibrillator [AED] has been installed at their race track facility. The AED was donated by Culpepper’s Cardiac Foundation, a local non-profit organization dedicated to installing these emergency medical devices at local businesses and other establishments.

Melanie Brown started the organization three years ago following the untimely passing of her late fiancée, Michael Culpepper, who passed away from cardiac arrest. Not wanting anyone else to experience a similar loss, she started her organization to raise proceeds to donate AEDs across the county, as well as fund scholarships for medical students and firefighters.

Melanie was invited to donate an AED at Auburndale Speedway. This AED was one of more than 20 that her organization has donated and installed at establishments across the county including Tanner’s Lakeside, The Mission, and the Winter Haven Boxing Club.

“It is absolutely, honestly just amazing that Culpepper’s Cardiac Foundation is getting out there and so many people hear about it, and I am thankful to place that here because supporting this foundation can get out here is so touching,” Brown said.

Matt Nichols, safety director for 30 years, had invited Melanie and her team to install an AED at the Speedway. Seeing all of the good work she had done installing AEDs throughout the county, he admired her work, especially in light of the tragedy that inspired it.

“I felt we needed one here on sight,” he said. “We have a lot of people here every weekend. Every age you can imagine are here from newborns to elderly. They come by here to watch the race and to race. We admire her foundation for actually doing this. She is very inspiring, she is doing a very good thing here, and we appreciate it.”

Jamie Wetherington, a member of the medical team, was present during last week’s incident. He and his team assessed the young patient and discovered that a popcorn kernel was stuck in the infant’s airway. He is thankful that an AED was donated to their facility in case another emergency arises.

“She [Melanie] and her organization are top-notch,” he said. “We couldn’t be prouder.”

Colette and Rex Guy, the owners of Auburndale Speedway, were honored to have received the AED. They are glad to be prepared with it in case of an emergency, and they hope and pray such an emergency never arises.

Mostly, we are honored that they would think of us and donate to us and it just gives [us] peace of mind that you have it on this property.

“It is awesome that we have something [like Culpepper’s Cardiac Foundation] in Polk County,” Colette said. “They are that extra mile and doing this for so many people in the county and we are lucky to be a part of it.”

I” think it is very well needed here, we can use it the proper way, and anything that can save a life, that is what it means,” Rex said. “It is awesome what she is doing. I hope we don’t have to use it, but we do have one.”

Vacationing Vehicle Burglary Suspect Shot By Home Owner Arrested

0

On October 29, 2023 a Davenport home owner reportedly noticed someone trying to break into his wife’s car. According to reports the home owner is accused of confronting the suspect, chasing him while he fled and shooting him. That home owner was arrested. Details of that arrest are here: Polk Man Charged With Attempted Murder.

The Polk County Sheriff Office has now arrested Reginald Griffin, DOB 04/13/1994, on three counts of burglary of an unoccupied conveyance, crossing county lines to commit burglary, and petit theft. The arrest took a few weeks as the suspect was hospitalized from the shooting. Griffin made it out of the hospital, before a judge signed the arrest order, but was arrested in Bartow.

The following is a long exerpt from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office affidavit (It should be noted that this is an unedited, but redacted report of facts by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. These facts are up for question and everyone is entitled to question the validity of facts by law enforcement in a court of law. The Daily Ridge does not rewrite these facts as some meanings or interpretations could be in error and change context. We hope readers appreciate being able to read the information and come to their own understanding and conclusions. Certain names of witnesses or victims may be redacted) :

“On 10/29/23 I was directed to respond to the residence located at REDACTED Davenport FL, in reference to a reported shooting of a person.

I made contact with Officer Rodrigues (H1657) of the Haines City Police Department, he briefed me on his findings. I learned on 10/29/23 at approximately 0555 hours, Arnold Gene Sterling observed a black male, later identified as Reginald Griffin, to be reaching into the front driver’s side door of his wife’s vehicle, which is a white Toyota Camry (REDACTED). The vehicle was parked in the driveway of the residence located at REDACTED. Sterling exited the front door of the residence and shouted “halt” several times at Reginald. Reginald fled the scene on foot and Sterling chased him. As Sterling chased Reginald, Sterling fired approximately five shots from a pistol in Reginald’s direction. Reginald was struck by one round which entered his right flank and did not exit his torso.

I located multiple camera angles which captured the incident. Prior to Reginald being shot, he is clearly seen opening the front driver’s side door of the Camry and reaching into the vehicle. Reginald was wearing dark clothing during the incident. Reginald did not appear to remove any items from within the vehicle. During a sworn recorded interview REDACTED stated she did not give anybody permission to enter the vehicle.

An additional conveyance burglary was reported at REDACTED Davenport FL in reference to Davenport PD case number 23-1104. REDACTED reported her Toyota Tacoma was entered and approximately $10.00 in change was removed from within it, along with a key to a garage door. This occurred on 10/29/23 at approximately 0530 hours. Video of the incident depicts a subject wearing dark clothing entering the passenger side of the vehicle. REDACTED stated she did not give anybody permission to enter the vehicle or remove any items from it.

An additional conveyance burglary was reported at REDACTED Davenport FL in reference to Davenport PD case number 23-1107. REDACTED reported he discovered video of a subject consistent with Reginald attempting to open the doors of his Ram pickup which was parked in his driveway. The suspect was not able to enter the cabin of the vehicle, however he lowered the tailgate in an effort to locate property belonging to the victim. This incident took place on 10/29/23 at approximately 0500 hours. REDACTED stated he did not give anybody permission to enter the vehicle. Nothing was taken from the vehicle.

During the course of my investigation I determined, after being shot, Reginald fled to the residence located at REDACTED. I authored and executed a search warrant at this residence. I discovered bloody clothing within the residence which was consistent with the clothing I observed the suspect to be wearing in videos of the above burglaries.
On 11/3/23 I conducted a recorded post Miranda interview with Reginald Griffin. Reginald stated he woke on the day of the shooting at approximately 0430 hours and was unable to go back to sleep. Reginald stated he decided to go for a walk and “smoke weed”. Reginald initially stated Sterling exited his home and fired at him unprovoked. I confronted Reginald with the video surveillance which depicted him reaching into Sterling’s vehicle. Reginald admitted he decided during his walk to begin checking unlocked cars for things he could take. Reginald stated he did this because he was on vacation and was trying to enjoy himself. Reginald stated he entered approximately three vehicles prior to being shot.

Based on the above information, I determined probable cause exists to charge Reginald Griffin with three counts of burglary of an unoccupied conveyance, crossing county lines to commit burglary, and petit theft.”

Welcome, World Travelers! Trolls: Band Together—Ugh, I’m Too Old For This!

by James Coulter

Plenty of movies inspire people to ponder life’s big questions. How did the universe begin? What is its grand purpose? am I doing with my own life? And what compelled me to watch the third Trolls movie?

Seriously, why did I watch the third Trolls movie?!

Well, the answer to that question is simple enough. It was a choice between watching and reviewing that movie or the Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. I decided to watch this movie instead. (I may have made the wrong choice!)

Welcome World Travelers

Honestly, I don’t even know why I should even bother reviewing this movie. The only reason anyone would watch the third Trollsmovie is because they’re the parents of children who have already seen the first two movies (and perhaps even the Netflix animated series) and they begged to watch the new movie in theaters. Otherwise, there’s no good reason why anyone, including an adult, would willingly watch this movie.

Trolls: Band Together follows the main protagonists of the first two Trolls movies, Princess Poppy and Branch. Now, stop me if you heard this premise before: Branch was formerly a member of a boy band, BroZone—STOP!

Yes, we’ve heard this story before. Once there was a super popular band, but the band members didn’t get along and eventually broke up. Years later, someone tries to get the band back together. So, they go on a road trip to track down the other members who have all grown up and moved on with their lives. They’re convinced to drop what they’re doing and get the band back together. Eventually, they all reunite, only to end up fighting and remembering why they broke up in the first place. But they eventually set aside their differences and put on the big musical number that convinces them to start playing again. And they all lived happily ever after. The end!

Again, we’ve all seen the “getting the band together” plot done before. If you’ve seen The Blues BrothersThe Muppets, or—Heaven forbid!—the Country Bear Jamboree, you’ve seen this story done before, and the only reason you would watch this plot done again is if it added something new and more interesting. Trolls: Band Together doesn’t offer anything new or interesting.

Oh, wait, never mind, there is a “new” twist. Turns out Branch and his long-lost brother (John Dory) need to get the band back together because their other band mate was captured by two pop star twins (who look like rejects from Ruby Gillman) who are stealing his talent (quite literally) to use as their own. Oh, and Poppy has a long-lost sister. And the small shiny troll that farts glitter is in this movie. Because, of course! Why not?

Fine. For the sake of “fairness” (and because I need to pad out this piece long enough to count as a formal review), I’ll list three things I liked about this movie:

1) The Animation. Unlike other DreamWorks movies, which essentially look like every other DreamWorks movie (save The Bad Guys and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish), this movie does have a unique art style. Many of the textures to the character models and world look like they were made from different material, from felt and fur to paper and plastic. One character looks like a wig made from shredded-up paper sent through a paper shredder (you’ll know them when you see them). And the water effect looks like those little plastic bubble (the ones that look like popping boba)—so that’s pretty neat. At the very least, this movie has a unique look and feel from other 3D movies (not as unique as Spider-Verse or The Last Wish, but unique nonetheless).

2) The Music. Like the other Trolls movies, this film is a jukebox musical with plenty of random music numbers strewn within the storyline. At the very least, the music is good—though, honestly, I don’t know if it’s because the music is performed well or if it’s because it’s popular music that other people like so people like them because they like them.

3) The “Hustle” Animated Scene. There’s a sequence where the characters push the “hustle” button. That button turns the film into trippy 2D animation that looks like something from Yellow Submarine. It’s trippy and cool!

And that’s it. Those are the only good qualities of the movie. Unless you have children who are dragging you to the theater to watch this film, if you are a grown adult with agency, you don’t need to watch it. You shouldn’t watch it.

Honestly, between this and the Paw Patrol movie earlier this year, I feel bad dissing movies that are made for little kids. I feel like a grumpy adult who’s too old to know what the kids are into these days. Sometimes, I wonder if I should forgive films like this because “they’re made for little kids.” But then I remember that would be a massive cop-out. Something being “made for kids” should not excuse low quality. Kids deserve better!

Guess Who’s Going to the Super Bowl? Lake Wales Junior Highlanders Go to State Championship and Beyond!

0

by James Coulter

They only lost two games this season, but even with a record of 8-2, the Lake Wales Jr. Highlanders are on the road to the Super Bowl.

“They only lost two games in the season, but we take those losses as a learning opportunity,” said Eric Stoudemire, Athletic Director for the Jr. Highlanders. “By overcoming adversity, you learn from your mistakes and get better. So, the kids lift their heads and keep moving forward. It got us where we are at.”

The Jr. Highlanders are competing in a league with more than 50 teams. For them to be able to compete with athletes on a high level is nothing short of a miraculous accomplishment, Stoudemire boasted.

Stoudemire and his colleagues started the Lake Wales Athletic and Education Association to help middle-grade student-athletes prepare for competing on the high school level. With the Lake Wales Highlanders winning state last year for the first time, they wanted to prepare young kids with the proper material necessary to achieve that same goal.

“We know that every kid won’t be attending Lake Wales High School, but we want to prepare them for any high school they attend for the next level,” Stoudemire said. “The game of football is so competitive, but we have a great thing going. The league that we play in is very competitive as well. The kids get a lot of exposure. Every game that we play, the kids gain experience where they can [play against] future five-star players.”

As with any good student-athlete program, the organization focuses on the “student” part of the student-athlete first, ensuring that their players are making the grade as well as making the play. However, regardless of how well they do in the classroom, the players nevertheless benefit from being on the field if it means keeping them off the streets and out of trouble, Stoudemire said.

“We know that in those two hours a day out of the week, we have those kids in our possession, and we know those kids are not out in the street, they are not sitting around with negative thoughts on their mind and all that,” he said. “So, with that program, it keeps the kids busy and it keeps them under adult supervision so that we know where they are. If they are not at school, they are on the field practicing with us.”

Stoudemire owes their success thus far to the hard work and effort provided by the coaches and the parents. However, he feels their organization could receive more support from the city and the community.

Moreover, he hopes that the experience and lessons they are providing to their student-athletes will help them to grow into upstanding young men and women who will become productive members of their community.

“We all pray that our kids become successful and they give back like we give back,” he said. “We want these kids to open doors for the elderly, we want them to have manners, so we are teaching

kids to be successful and meet their goals. It is not just football. We have young men and women, young boys and girls, who will become young men and women, so we want to put them on the path to become what they need to be.”

Currently, the Junior Highlanders are having a fundraiser hosted by a local philanthropist to help cover their costs traveling to the state championship. To learn more about this fundraiser and how you can contribute, visit their Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/SeahawksLW

Gents & Bourbon Showcases the Carol Jenkins Barnett United Way Children’s Resource Center

Located to the side of the Children’s Museum at Bonnett Springs in Lakeland is a door. Next to it, sculptures of butterflies rest on a branch with one butterfly emerging from a cocoon. The doorway leads to a place that helps young children emerge from their own cocoons and grow into their smarter, wiser, and kinder selves.

The Carol Jenkins Barnett United Way Children’s Resource Center, according to its website, is “a community-based learning and resource center that provides classes, playgroups, workshops, developmental checkups, community activities, and support for parents and caregivers of children ages 0-6, as well as for expectant moms and dads.”

Last Friday evening, special guests had the opportunity to tour the facility and learn about its services. Afterward, they were able to enjoy some drinks and appetizers outside at “the depot.”

United Way of Central Florida hosted its annual Gents & Bourbon at its resource center next to the Children’s Museum in Bonnett Springs Park in Lakeland on Friday evening.

Originally, the event was to include tours of the facility and drinks and appetizers on the rooftop bar located above the museum. However, due to inclement weather, the after-party was hosted at “the depot” outside the museum.

“Turnout was fantastic, despite the weather,” said Jordan Weiland, Marketing Content Strategist for United Way of Central Florida. “It worked out well and gave an indoor space for people to use in addition to the patio.”

The event was hosted at The Carol Jenkins Barnett United Way Children’s Resource Center to help showcase it to the local community and share information about the programs and services provided at the new facility.

“We wanted to invite the community out to share what United Way does at the location, so guests had a tour of the space first and then got to mingle with Campaign Chair Desmond Clark on the patio,” Weiland said. “We are grateful for the Children’s Resource Center team for sharing about their space and programs so passionately and for our Campaign Chair Desmond Clark for sharing his heart with the crowd.”

Despite the rainy weather earlier that evening, the overall event experienced a great turnout. Proceeds from the event will benefit the United Way of Central Florida Success By 6 program, part of the Early Childhood Education initiative by United Way of Central Florida.

Their next big fundraiser will be their Season of Giving Dinner on Dec. 21 at 5:30 PM. For more information and tickets to the event, visit: https://www.liveuwcf.org/comm/SinglePageRegEvent.jsp?EventKeyHex=3233343136

Polk Man Charged With Attempted Murder After Shooting Car Burglary Suspect

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has arrested Arnold Sterling, DOB: 7/09/1958 for Attempted 2nd Degree Murder, Shooting Into A Building & Discharge of A Firearm In Residential Neighborhood. The incident occurred in a Davenport neighborhood near where Sterling lived.

“On 10/29/23 I as directed to respond to the residence located at REDACTED in reference to a reported shooting of a person.

I made contact with Officer Rodrigues (H1657) of the Haines City Police Department, he briefed me on his findings. I learned on 10/29 at approximately 0555 hours, Arnold Gene Sterling observed a black male, later identified as REDACTED to be reaching into the front driver’s side door of REDACTED vehicle, which is a white Toyota Camry . The vehicle was parked in the driveway of the residence located at REDACTED. Surveillance footage shows Sterling exit the front door of the residence and shout “halt” several times at REDACTED. REDACTED fled the scene on foot, and Sterling chased him. As Sterling chased REDACTED Sterling fired approximately five shots from a pistol in REDACTED directions. REDACTED was struck by one round which entered right flank and did not exit REDACTED’s torso.

Multiple surveillance camera angles were located within the dense residential area. Footage depicted REDACTED running from Sterling instantly upon contact with one another. At no point did I observe REDACTED be armed, or posing any kind of threat to Sterling.

One of the rounds fired by Sterling struck the residence located at REDACTED, pierced the garage door, and was located inside of the residence. REDACTED was inside of the home during this incident. REDACTED was not injured.

I learned REDACTED fled to the residence located at REDACTED where REDACTED was vacationing with family. REDACTED ran into the home to an upstairs bathroom where he collapsed and called out to his REDACTED & REDACTED.

I conducted a sworn recorded interview with REDACTED. REDACTED stated REDACTED observed

REDACTED to be naked and holding a towel over an apparent gunshot wound. REDACTED told REDACTED he was shot unprovoked by a male who walked out of his front door.

REDACTED stated REDACTED was able to see a blood trail and bloody handprints within the home. REDACTED stated after about a ten minute time period in the home, REDACTED transported REDACTED to Heart of Florida Hospital with REDACTED vehicle, a dark grey Chevrolet equinox bearing FL tag #REDACTED.

REDACTED sustained life threatening injuries, and was transferred to Lakeland Regional Health. REDACTED is currently in critical condition and is unable to be interviewed.

Through my investigation I determined Arnold Sterling fired REDACTED weapon toward REDACTED with intent to kill him. Sterling fired a deadly missile into an occupied residence, and unlawfully discharged a firearm within a residential area.”

Sterling is currently out on bond and the victim ( name currently isn’t being released under Marsy’s Law as he is a victim) did survive the shooting, but will be charged with 3 counts of burglary and 1 count of petty theft ( when this does occur we will get the name from PCSO).

According to Brian Bruchey , PIO PCSO, “Stand your ground or castle doctrine doesn’t apply when there is no threat, and in this case, the burglar took no threatening action and was running away. Therefore Sterling was not in danger.”

Welcome, World Travelers! The Marvels is a Marvelous Marvel of a Marvel Movie!

Welcome, World Travelers! The Marvels is a Marvelous Marvel of a Marvel Movie!

by James Coulter

2023 has not been a good year for superhero movies. Quantumania was meh! Guardians 3, though interesting, was disappointingly meh! And the less said about Shazam 2 and The Flash, the better. The only bright spots in this whole year wereAcross the Spiderverse, which was an excellent movie, and Blue Beetle, which was surprisingly underrated and deserved better at the box office.

So, now we have the last Marvel movie of the year—and, apparently, the last Marvel movie until 2025 now that the company is desperately trying to re-route the direction of the MCU. So, how is The Marvels? Will this movie allow this year for Marvel to go out like a brilliant supernova? Or will this year end, not with a bang, but a whimper?

The Marvels is the sequel to Captain Marvel, whose titular hero is trying to track down and stop a supervillain from stealing resources from other planets to save their dying planet. However, things quickly become complicated when the discovery of a mysterious magical bangle causes Captain Marvel to spontaneously change places with two other characters, Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel) and Monica Rambeau (Photon), whenever she uses her powers. Will the three heroines learn to work around this problem and stop the bad guy from nearly destroying the universe?

Let me cut to the chase: if you’re someone who thinks superhero movies are better when they’re “dark” and super “serious”, if you’re one of the people who petitioned Warner Bros to #ReleaseTheSnydercut and thus were responsible for the monstrosity that is the 4-Hour long cut of Justice Leauge, and now you’re super salty that James Gunn is taking over for Zack Snyder on the DC Movies, and if you’re someone who gets upset and cries “woke” when a female superhero takes the lead, this movie is NOT for you—and chances are, you’ve already review bombed this movie before it came out.

However, if you’re a normal person who loves “fun”, and your favorite superhero movies are the ones that have “fun” like Guardians of the GalaxyDeadpoolShazam, and Birds of Prey, then you are absolutely going to enjoy The Marvels. I myself was pleasantly surprised, as it’s the most fun I’ve had watching a Marvel movie (that wasn’t the Spiderverse films) in a long time. In a year of superhero monotony, this film was a breath of fresh air—on a roller coaster!

What I love most about the film is how much of an improvement it was from the original Captain Marvel movie. Personally, I didn’t care too much about that film when I first saw it. My biggest problem was how much of a stick-in-the-mud Captain Marvel’s character was in two-thirds of the movie (albeit for plot-related reasons)—with the other third actually allowing her to go hog wild. The Marvels allows her to go hog wild through the entire movie, and she is much better as a character for that. I really love it when Brie Larson gets snarky, sarcastic, and witty—and I really love it when she brings the thunder (sorry, wrong superhero!) with her powers!

Speaking of powers, I also love how well she bounces off the other two main leads, Ms. Marvel and Photon. The banter and chemistry they share are really enjoyable. And I especially love the overtly enthusiastic fangirl that is Kamala Khan. She gives off real Tom Holland vibes playing the Spider-Man to Captain Marvel’s Iron Man (which, I guess makes Photon the Iron Patriot?) My favorite part is when these three learn to work around their quirk of changing places with one another, especially during action sequences, which leads to some visually interesting and high-octane scenes.

But my absolute favorite part involves Goose the Cat. No spoilers, but if you loved Goose in the first movie, you will LOVE her in this movie, as she the inciting incident of one of the best (if not absolutely hilarious) scenes in the movie. Again, no spoiler, but let’s just say that scene does a better job of paying homage to Cats: The Musical than the abomination that was the live-action 2019 film.

There are only two real downsides to this movie. One is the homework. This movie expects you not only to have seen the previous Marvel movies, but also the Disney Plus mini-series WandavisionMs. Marvel, and Secret Invasion. Fortunately, I had seen those series (minus Secret Invasion, which I still haven’t watched). But I feel sorry for anyone who needs to buy a Disney Plus subscription and binge-watch hours of episodes just to catch up to this movie’s plot.

The other downside is the villain. Let’s face it: aside from Thanos and Loki, the Marvel movies are lacking in real memorable villains. This film’s antagonist is no exception. In fact, they’re so forgettable I don’t even know or remember their names. (Looks it up on Google: oh, it’s Dar-Benn the Accuser!)

Otherwise, The Marvels is a fun superhero movie that really knows how to have fun with fun characters and fun moments. If you love “fun” superhero movies, this one has plenty of high-octane action and quippy banter. If not, well, you can always watch the 4-Hour-Long “SnyderCut” of Justice Leauge on Max (if Zaslav doesn’t decide to scrap that for a tax write-off like he did Batgirl and Coyote Vs. Acme!)

Oh, and don’t forget to stick around for the post-credits scene. It is the best reveal in a post-credits scene thus far! You will be pleasantly surprised!
