When You See Something Say Something!

When You See Something Say Something! This certainly came into play after a Winter Haven resident helped police catch a vehicle burglary suspect this morning.

kimbrell

On 7-29-16 at approximately 4:30 a.m., a resident in the area of 1550 11st St NE in Winter Haven called 9-1-1 when he spotted someone carrying a flashlight and trying to get into vehicles in the area.

The witness stayed on the phone with dispatch as officers arrived in the area. The citizen gave a clear description of the suspect’s clothing and officers quickly made contact with someone matching the description, 45 year-old Mark Kimbrell. Officers detained Kimbrell and upon searching him, they found a watch and zip-loc bag of loose coins in his pocket.

Officers began canvassing the residents in the area and located the owner of the watch and coins, who determined that their vehicle had been burglarized. Further searching in the area revealed personal boxing equipment on the ground. Again, officers determined that the equipment came from another vehicle that had been burglarized.

The original caller was able to positively identify Kimbrell as the person he witnessed attempting to burglarize vehicles in the area.

“We cannot underscore the value enough of citizens calling in suspicious activity,” said Chief Charlie Bird. “Once again, our alert citizens helped catch a criminal in the act and he is back behind bars where he needs to be.”

Kimbrell has been arrested numerous times on charges that include Aggravated Assault, Armed Burglary, Battery, Possession of Firearm by Convicted Felon, Grand Theft, Petit Theft, Drug Charges, False ID to LEO and multiple incidents of Violation of Probation.

Kimbrell was taken into custody and booked into the Polk County Jail on charges of Burglary of Unoccupied Vehicle (F3), Petit Theft – Third Offense (M1) and Resisting Arrest W/O. Violence (M1).

 laneclosure
Emergency repairs have temporarily fixed a broken City of Lakeland  24” gravity sewer main beneath the sidewalk along the eastbound travel lane of Griffin Road just west of Pyramid Parkway in Lakeland.  Because the pipe is so close to the edge of pavement, the travel lane will remain closed until Monday to ensure temporary repairs function properly. Permanent repairs are expected in the coming weeks. Sidewalk along the work zone will remain closed until all repairs are finished and the sidewalk is restored.

Motorists can still expect delays traveling eastbound and are urged to drive with care in this area.

Winter Haven Police are Warning Citizens to be Extra Diligent if Approached by Someone Offering to Repair Vehicle Damage

Winter Haven Police are warning citizens to be extra diligent if approached by someone offering to repair vehicle damage – especially when your vehicle has no damage.

suspicioustruck
On 7-28-16, Winter Haven Police received two separate calls from citizens who encountered a Hispanic male driving a red newer model Chevrolet Silverado quad cab pickup truck.
The first incident occurred in the North Lake Mirror Dr. area where the male approached the victim at the residence. The male walked up to the door and solicited work to repair the damaged vehicle. The citizen, knowing there was no damage to their vehicle, requested a business card. The male went back to his truck and sped away.

The second occurrence happened on Ave I NW when the male approached a citizen as they were arriving home. The male pulled up alongside of the citizen and offered to fix the damage to their vehicle for a good price. When the citizen countered by stating there was no damage to their vehicle, the subject left the area.

Citizens should be mindful of anyone approaching them offering to do repairs, whether to a vehicle or on their property. Unsolicited repair work can be risky and there could be other motives behind the approach. Always report suspicious incidents such as this as soon as possible in order for law enforcement to attempt to make contact with the person.

The subject in the two recent occurrences is a Hispanic male wearing a white t-shirt and a red ball cap. He has an unidentified script tattoo on his left forearm. The red Chevy Silverado quad cab pickup truck may have a green gas cap cover.

Anyone who has had any suspicious encounter with this individual or has information on his identity is asked to contact Detective Mike Leonard at 863-401-2256.

Government Officials, Southwest Florida Safety Advocates Join Safe Kids to Highlight Dangers of Child Heatstroke Deaths in Hot Cars

Safety advocates remind caregivers to never leave a child alone in a car and to be on the lookout for children unattended in cars.

[Fort Myers, Florida] As temperatures continue to rise, government officials and health professionals will be joining Safe Kids of Southwest Florida at the Florida Highway Patrol Office located at 10041 Daniels Parkway, Fort Myers, Florida for a press conference on Friday, July 29, 2016 at 10:00 am that will discussways to prevent child deaths and injuries from heatstroke in hot cars.

Since 1998, more than 679 children have died from heatstroke while unattended in cars. In 2016, there have been 21 deaths nationwide with two having occurred in Florida.

“These kinds of tragedies are 100 percent preventable,” said Safe Kids Coordinator Sally Kreuscher. “That’s why we’re calling on everyone to work together to help protect kids from this very preventable tragedy. Whether you are a parent or caregiver, or just a concerned bystander, you can help save lives.”

Heatstroke sets in when the body isn’t able to cool itself quickly enough. A child’s body heats up three to five times faster than adult’s, making them more susceptible to heatstroke. When a child’s internal temperature reaches 104 degrees, major organs begin to shut down, and when that temperature reaches 107 degrees, the child can die.

Safe Kids, with the support of the General Motors, created Never Leave Your Child Alone in a Car (NLYCAC) as part of its Buckle Up program, a national initiative established 19 years ago to keep children and families safe in and around cars.

Parents, caregivers and bystanders are encouraged to help reduce the number of heatstroke deaths by remembering to ACT.

  • A: Avoid heatstroke-related injury and death by never leaving your child alone in a car, not even for a minute. And make sure to keep your car locked when you’re not in it so kids don’t get in on their own.

  • C: Create reminders by putting something in the back of your car next to your child such as a briefcase, a purse or a cell phone that is needed at your final destination. This is especially important if you’re not following your normal routine.

  • T: Take action. If you see a child alone in a car, call 911. Emergency personnel want you to call. They are trained to respond to these situations. One call could save a life.

Along with Safe Kids of SW Florida the Agencies/Officials that will participate at the press conference are Senator Lizbeth Benacquisto, Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, Florida Highway Patrol, Florida Department of Children and Families, Lee County Domestic Animal Services, South Trail Fire Department, Alligator Towing and Parent Advocates.
