Fatal Crash Blocking Traffic On I-4 In Polk County

0

Davenport, Florida – At approximately 5:00 am, on Sunday, January 08, 2017, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Communications Center (ECC) received a report of a crash near mile marker 53 on Interstate 4.
Deputies and Polk County Fire Rescue responded and found one person deceased – an adult male who had exited his car at the time of the crash and was struck by another vehicle involve – 74-year-old Joseph P. Riley of Lake Alfred.

The roadway at this location is six lane interstate with paved shoulders and a grass median. A wire barrier separates the eastbound and westbound lanes. The speed limit on this section of roadway is 70 mph. It was dark at the time of the crash with no illumination beyond vehicle headlights. Traffic was relatively light with traffic spaced out for large distances.

Through the investigation, deputies learned there were two separate crashes involved in this incident.

The initial crash involved a 2017, blue Hyundai, driven by 54-year-old Tammy Ann Riley of West Virginia.  Riley was traveling eastbound on I-4 near mile marker 53. Riley told deputies she was in the center lane and did not see another vehicle when she was stuck from behind.  Riley told deputies she came to a controlled stop on the right shoulder approximately 300 yards from the point she was struck.

Deputies learned the vehicle which struck Riley’s Hyundai was a 2016 gold, Mazda driven by 25-year-old Lori E. Jones of Orlando.  Jones told deputies she didn’t see the Hyundai before striking it from the rear.  After impact, the Mazda’s airbags deployed and her car stopped in the eastbound left lane.  Jones said while still inside her car, she felt the Mazda being struck from behind pushing it onto the left shoulder approximately 60 feet farther east where it came to final rest.

The vehicle which struck Jones’ Mazda was a 2011, red Ford Focus driven by 74-year-old Joseph P. Riley of Lake Alfred (No relation to Tammy Riley). The Ford Focus sustained significant damage to the front, also causing all lighting to stop working. It came to final rest mostly in the inside lane, but just over the lane line separating the inside and center lanes. At this time Mr. Riley exited his vehicle.

After exiting his vehicle, Mr. Riley was on foot on the left (north) side of his car in the area of the left (inside) lane and road shoulder. At that time a 2013, white BMW, driven by 57-year-old Peter A. Moran was eastbound in the inside lane when he saw debris in the road and began taking evasive action and steering right.

He then saw the Ford Focus in his path of travel and steered sharply to the left to avoid it. He passed to the left of the Ford Focus, but struck Mr. Riley as he was attempting to avoid the vehicle. Mr. Riley was carried a short distance on the hood of the BMW until rolling off and coming to final rest in the median on the north side of the wire barrier in the center of the median.

The BMW came to a controlled stop near the center of the media approximately 75 feet past the Ford Focus. Mr. Riley died at the scene.

All vehicle occupants appear to have been seat belted. The airbags in Jones and Mr. Riley’s vehicles deployed.

The airbags in the other two vehicles did not deploy, but did not suffer significant front end damage.

Impairment, driver fatigue and driver distraction are being investigated.

Interstate 4 was reduced to one lane of travel eastbound for approximately 5 hours at the scene of the crash.

Armed Suspect Robs Lake Wales McDonald’s Sunday Morning

0

Lake Wales, Florida -On January 8, 2017 at approximately 8:34 am officers responded the report of an armed robbery at McDonald’s, located at 2500 Ridge Way in Lake Wales. Officers arrived on scene and learned that an armed suspect entered the restaurant, fired a shot into the ceiling, and ordered everyone to not move. The two customers who were in the lobby eating complied with the order and the employees fled in different directions. The suspect did not fire any other shots and nobody was hurt. When the employees fled, the suspect went behind the counter but was not able to get into any of the registers. He then fled the store in what was described as a blue minivan. The employees provided a physical description of the black male suspect and gave a clothing description. They stated he was wearing a dark colored hoodie with the hood over his head, a red bandana covering his face, jeans, and white tennis shoes. They stated he was armed with a handgun.

A BOLO was broadcast over the police radio which provided the vehicle and suspect description. Officers from the Lake Wales Police Department and Polk County Sheriff Deputies began looking for the vehicle and suspect. A blue minivan fitting the description was seen traveling south on 1st St and it stopped just west of the intersection of Park Ave and 1st St, in front of the Post Office. The van, a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country, was being driven by the vehicle owner, Latasha Johnson. She stated her boyfriend, Willie Watson III, had just arrived to her apartment at the Seminole Hotel, located at 207 N 1st St, with the van and he had been driving it that morning. Officers and Deputies secured the perimeter of the Seminole Hotel and located Watson inside. With the van fitting the description of the suspect vehicle and Watson fitting the description of the robbery suspect he was detained and transported to the Lake Wales Police Department for further investigation. Watson immediately invoked his rights and refused to speak with detectives about the robbery.

A search of the minivan revealed a loaded 40 caliber handgun which is the same type of firearm used during the robbery. It also revealed a glove which matched a glove left at the scene by Watson. The apartment Watson had been in at 207 N 1st St has been secured and will be searched for evidence related to the robbery. The investigation revealed the owner of the van was not with Watson during the robbery and she stated he had no knowledge of the robbery.

McDonald’s management confirmed Watson did not gain entry to the cash registers and they reported nothing was missing from the restaurant. At this time of this release video or pictures are not available. “This robbery could have gone real bad! We are thankful nobody was injured during the incident. We are also thankful we were able to locate Watson and take him into custody without incident. The great working relationship between the Lake Wales Police Department and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office resulted in a violent criminal being captured very quickly.” (Schulze)

Watson has been placed under arrest by Detective David Hernandez and will be booked into the Polk County Jail charged with the following: Armed Robbery, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, discharge of a firearm in an occupied business, and there may be additional charges.

Watson is no stranger to the criminal lifestyle and he has a very extensive arrest record. Anyone who has information about this investigation is asked to contact Detective David Hernandez at (863) 678-4223 extension 264 or Heartland Crime Stoppers at (800) 226-8477.

The 4th Annual “Wings Over Winter” At Lake Wales Airport Starts Today Through Sunday

Lake Wales, Florida – Nearly 200 paramotor pilots and industry leaders from across the United States will attend “Wings Over Winter” to share and celebrate their love of flying paramotors this weekend. The 4th Annual Powered Paraglider Fly-in will be held at the Lake Wales Municipal Airport this year.

Admission for spectators is free. There will be food trucks and different vendors, including Red Bull. Attendees will get a chance to watch colorful gliders soar through the sky and what Aviator PPG is calling “kiting wars” where pilots fly their paragliders using the wind like a kite and see who can stay up the longest.

“We have pilots coming from all over the country,” said John Eisele, instructor at Aviator PPG. “The furthest one is coming from the United Kingdom. Paragliding is really big in Europe. Within the last five years with the technology, it’s really starting to gain steam here in the U.S.”

For the first time, the three-day paragliding event that begins this Friday takes place at the 200-acre Lake Wales Municipal Airport. The event hosted by Lake Wales-based Aviator PPG went on hiatus last year after being held near Chalet Suzanne for the first three years. Aviator is a dedicated paramotor sales and training facility. Aviator PPG was founded in 2012 by Eric Farewell, who was later joined by co-owner, Travis Burns, and instructor, Jon Eisele. Together, the group formed the Paradigm Aerobatic Team, which is set to perform in airshows around the country in the coming year, and continues to revolutionize the sport by growing a dedicated social media following on YouTube and Facebook. Aviator moved into its current state-of-the-art facility located on-site at Lake Wales Airport in July 2016.

“I think this will be the biggest event (at the airport) aside from the skydiving nationals,” said Eric Farewell, founder and co-owner of Aviator PPG. “It’s a spectacle; it’s family-friendly; I think it will really be a fun time.”
