Ramon Levin Arrested & Charged With Sexual Battery

Lake Wales, Florida – According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office a they served a warrant for the arrest of 86 year old, Robert Levin a Lake Wales resident. The incident apparently occurred on January 4th when Levin called a woman who had taken care of his wife, now deceased,  in the past.  Levin is accused of asking the victim, a 26 year old female, to help him set up a new residence. According to published reports Levin allegedly attacked the woman, while he was naked, at the new residence while she made a bed. Published reports from ABCACTION NEWS pinned the victim up against a bed and groped her and asked her to have sex with him. The victim was also groped one more time during the incident.

Levin was arrested on January 7th and bonded out on January 9th.

Charles Phipps, 78, of Lake Wales, Florida passed away Friday, January 8, 2016 at Somers Hospice House in Sebring.

He was born on September 25, 1937 in New Castle, Pennsylvania to the late Joseph R. and Martha (Shenker) Phipps and he has been a resident of this area for 8 years moving here from Canfield, Ohio. He was a retried Tool & Die Maker for General Motors. Charles was Past Commodore of Point Yacht Club, Long time 4-H Advisor, Volunteer Scuba Diver with Mahoning Co. Sheriff office, worked for
United Engineering, was a Union Rep and UAW Member. He was a member of the St. Matthew Catholic Church in Winter Haven.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Julie Phipps; daughter, Kimberly Schlegel ( Eric) of Salem, Ohio; son, Charles Phipps (Shelly) of Canfield, Ohio; sister, Sally Perunko of Canfield, Ohio; 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

Memorial services will be held 9:00 AM Thurs. January 14, 2016 at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Winter Haven with Fr. Nicholas O’Brien officiating.

Those who wish may make memorial donations to the St. Matthew Catholic Church 1991 Overlook Drive, Winter Haven, FL 33884.

Edmund Raymond Motis, 85, passed away Thursday, January 7, 2016 at his home in Babson Park. He was born September 4, 1930 in Exeter, NE to the late Edmen and Alice (Kovanda) Motis. He had been a resident of the Lake Wales area for 29 years moving there from Friend, Nebraska. He was a parts manager for Chemical Containers and served his country in the United States Air Force as a flight line radio technician and fought in the Korean War. He was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, and a member of the American Legion Post 183 in Friend, NE. He loved to water ski, was a fisherman, a duck hunter and a wood worker. He was also an avid Nebraska fan and held onto season tickets for the Nebraska Cornhuskers even after moving to Florida. He would not give them up.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Motis and a son Matt Motis. Survivors include his sons, Michael Motis and wife Regina of Babson Park, FL., John Motis and his wife Laura of Babson Park, David Motis and his wife Jeanette of Babson Park; daughter-n-law Rhonda Motis of Lake Wales; sisters, Goldie Motis Quinn of Lincoln, NE and Marjorie Motis Johansen of Friend, NE; 19 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, January 16 at 2:00 PM at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd with The Rev. Fr. Thomas C. Seitz, Rev. Joan Brawley and Deacon John Motis. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the American Legion Post 183, Main Street, Friend, NE 68359.

Students To Be Honored At The 15th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Challenge Breakfast

15th Annual MLK BreakfastBartow, Florida – Students who wrote award-winning essays will be honored by the Community Relations Advisory Council of the Board of County Commissioners at a breakfast event in Bartow.

The 15th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Challenge Breakfast will be held at the Bartow Civic Center, 2250 S. Floral Ave. at 7:00 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2016. In addition to the essay winners and Kathleen High School vocal ensemble Red Hot Voices, the breakfast will include greetings from County Manager Jim Freeman, Sheriff Grady Judd and School Board Superintendent Dr. Kathryn LeRoy. Commissioner Todd Dantzler and Equity and Human Resources Director Kandis Baker-Buford will host the program.

This year’s essay theme is “Remember! Celebrate! Act! King’s Legacy for our World.” The essays were written by Polk County students and were judged by Polk State College faculty.

This event is free and open to the public, but attendees must RSVP to [email protected] by Monday, Jan. 11.

One Person Injured After Home Destroyed By Fire In Nalcrest

Lake Wales, Florida – Brian Lacey from the Polk County Fire Rescue advised that the PCFR   responded to a residential structure fire at 9027 Temple Dr in the Nalcrest area. Call came in at 4:36pm, first on scene arrived at 4:51pm, declared under control at 5:36pm, and PCFR is still currently on scene. Structure was a single wide mobile home and declared a total loss. PCFR responded with 2 engine units, 1 water truck, 1 air truck, 1 battalion chief and 1 medical chief, along with 2 medical units.  medic units transported one patient to Lake  Wales hospital. Red Cross was contacted. 1 adult male and 1 adult female were displaced as a result of the fire.

At its annual luncheon in December several City Employees were recognized for going above and beyond in the course of doing their jobs. There were 2 new categories added this year. Citizen Service awards and Team Player awards were presented along with Employee of the Year awards.

Doug Riesenbeck, Wastewater Dept, is our Employee of the Year for 2015.

Doug demonstrates on a daily basis leadership qualities and his willingness to help anywhere in the City he is requested with any department. Doug volunteered to take on the responsibility of overseeing and administering a lubrication program at the plant. As a result of his diligence and willingness to do this, the wastewater plant has seen a reduction in energy costs to the point that we will be applying for an Energy Star rating for the plant this year. He watches out for the safety of his fellow workers and corrects safety issues he finds while working throughout the City.

On a daily basis, Marcia is going above and beyond what would normally be considered a good. If someone comes in with a problem or questions, she doesn’t just answer it, she makes sure that it is thoroughly investigated and the patron leaves completely satisfied. Marcia is always looking for ways to help others she sets the bar very high and takes pride in her job and has never asked her staff to do anything she isn’t willing to. We have been told on numerous occasions that our library is preferred to other libraries due to the service our staff provide and Marcia is an exemplar of that caring heart and total respect for all her co-workers and all who visit our location.

This group has followed changes and applied operational procedures that have resulted in the plant being recognized by their peers and environmental professional organizations as one of the best operated wastewater treatment plants in the State of Florida. The plant has been featured in several articles recognizing their accomplishments.

Citizen Servant of the Year – Tiffany Holden, Police Department

Officer Holden was dispatched to a call with a family in crisis. She quickly learned no criminal act had occurred, but the family had just been under a significant amount of stress because their daughter had stage 4 liver cancer which was terminal. In speaking to the daughter, Officer Holden learned that the daughter would not be able to attend her high school homecoming dance. Officer Holden’s heart took over and she began a mission to ensure this young lady not only attend the dance, but should would attend in style. As a result of Officer Holden’s efforts the dress, shoes, jewelry and other items were donated. Additionally, Officer Holden  was able to get her a full manicure, pedicure, and transportation to the dance in an Infinity SUV. Ultimately, the young lady was able to attend the dance, complete with a police escort that evening.

Officer Holden set up a GoFundme account which has raised $275.00 so far. Officer Holdens’ effort’s thus far has netted $1,315.00 in donations.

Citizen Servant of the Year, Honorable Mention – Penny Wienk, Customer Service 

An elderly gentleman came in really confused and upset because his lights had been disconnected. Penny calmed him down and told him to wait a few minutes. She found out that he was a veteran and had no family. She contacted the Care Center and also the VA office to see if anyone could help him.  She was able to assist him with the paperwork involved and get him the help that he needed. She provided customer service above and beyond her duties as Customer Service Clerk.

Lake Wales, FL – Uninsured Americans who have not signed up for health insurance through the government’s Health Insurance Marketplace still have time—but two important deadlines are fast approaching.

 

A plan must be selected and the premium paid by January 15to obtain coverage by February 1; for coverage effective March 1, the plan and premium must be finalized by January 31.

 

Lake Wales Medical Center and Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center both offer free application assistance to help people evaluate insurance options on the Marketplace and complete their application forms.

Increased penalties for 2016 are driving many people to the Marketplace. Fines are $695 per adult, $347.50 per child, and up to $2,085 per family, or 2.5% of family income, whichever is higher.

According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), the majority of people buying insurance on the Marketplace qualify for financial assistance; most are expected to pay less than $75 per month.

 

The certified assistors at Heart of Florida and Lake Wales Medical Center are encouraging those needing help to reserve appointments early, as schedules typically book quickly this month.
