PCSO Investigating Serious Crash That Closed Parts of Hwy 98 Yesterday
Around 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 19, 2013, a 2000 orange Chevrolet Camaro was traveling northbound on U.S. 98 just south of the entrance to Polk State College/USF in Winter Haven when it was struck from behind by a 2007 white Suzuki XL-7, which was traveling at a high rate of speed heading northbound on U.S. 98.
The crash caused the driver of the Camaro, 22-year-old Garrett Michael Putnam (DOB 1/21/1991) of Winter Haven, to suffer critical injuries to his neck. He was transported to LRMC where he has undergone surgery and remains in critical condition.
Deputies retrieved several samples of evidence to be evaluated at the state FDLE lab from the at-fault driver of the Suzuki, 21-year-old David Breit (DOB 3/8/1991) of Lakeland. Charges are pending against Breit. Breit is cooperating with deputies in this investigation.
