Crazy Driver Crashes Into Five Cars On Hwy 60
Bartow, Florida – Polk County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a series of five separate traffic crashes caused by one driver this afternoon.
Preliminary information so far is as follows:
The investigation began when the Bartow Police Department began receiving phone calls this afternoon, Monday, January 23, 2012, in reference to a green Kia SUV driving erratically and causing a traffic crash. Seconds later, as the SUV continued heading east out of the city limits of Bartow and into unincorporated Polk County, PCSO received began receiving several calls from motorists reporting that a green Kia SUV was heading eastbound in the westbound lanes of SR 60 East.
The first crash caused by the SUV occurred near Flamingo Road in Bartow. The next two crashes caused by the SUV occurred near 91 Mine Road
on SR 60 East. The fourth crash occurred just west of Dusty’s Camper World, near Rifle Range Road, on SR 60 East.
The final crash occurred right in front of Dusty’s Camper World, when the SUV (that was still heading eastbound in the westbound lanes) struck a PCSO patrol vehicle that had responded to the area to lay down ‘stop-sticks’ in an attempt to stop the car. The patrol car was in a turn lane when the SUV struck it. The SUV came to a halt after this crash and the driver was immediately taken into custody.
Nobody, including the driver of the SUV and the deputy sheriff, was seriously injured in any of the crashes.
The driver of the Kia SUV, whose name and charges will be released later this evening, was checked out by EMS on scene and does not have any serious injuries. He has been placed under arrest by PCSO and will be transported to the Polk County Jail.
The first call received by PCSO in reference to the SUV was at 2:44 p.m.
, and the final crash with the PCSO patrol car occurred at 2:52 p.m.
Traffic should be congested in that area until further notice – there is one lane open each way at this time.
The investigation is ongoing.
