Polk County “hams” will join with thousands of Amateur Radio operators who will be demonstrating their emergency capabilities June 25th & 26th. Over the past year, the news has been full of reports of ham radio operators providing critical communications during unexpected emergencies in towns across America including the California wildfires, winter storms, tornadoes and other events worldwide. During Hurricane Katrina, Amateur Radio – often called “Ham Radio” – was often the ONLY way people could communicate, and hundreds of volunteer “hams” traveled south to save lives and property. Winter Haven Centennial Day In Central Park On June 22

Winter Haven, Florida – June 22, 2011 marks the actual date for the City of Winter Haven centennial when the Town Council held its first meeting in 1911. Officers were elected and a corporate seal was adopted featuring an orange tree, which is still used today.   To commemorate the first meeting, the City is planning a celebration called Winter Haven Centennial Day in Central Park on June 22 at noon.  It will include a reenactment of the first Town Council meeting, period music, costumes and birthday cake from Publix!  Seating will be available for those interested in bringing a boxed lunch…
